He reached up for his elegant neck cloth and began to unfasten it, and she watched his long, pale, bejeweled fingers in something of a daze.
He pulled the cloth free, his shirt coming open, and she averted her gaze from the disturbing sight of his bare chest. She heard his laugh, and then his hands were on her once more, catching her shoulders and turning her around. "Don't worry, my pet. You won't be seeing anything that might shock you." And he pulled the neck cloth over her eyes, effectively blinding her.
She wanted to fight back, to struggle, but that would give him an excuse to touch her further, and the less she felt the brush of his cool fingers the better. "That's right," he said, his voice soft and approving. "Now give me your arm and we'll give you a taste of damnation."
"Do you really find blasphemy that entertaining?" she said, trying not to start when he took her hand and placed it on his arm.
"Always."
She'd never put her hand on any arm that wasn't covered by layers of clothing, including a coat. The devil who oversaw these revels, be he Monsieur le Comte or something else, wore only a thin shirt made of the finest lawn. In her sudden world of darkness she was acutely aware of the feel of his arm beneath her fingers. The sinew and bone. The unexpected warmth of his skin, when his hands and his heart were so cold. ~ Anne Stuart
Francis Rohan quotes by Anne Stuart
He'd reached the door, then stopped for a moment, looking back at Elinor, staring at her.
"Master Francis..." Mrs. Clarke said in a warning tone.
"I just wanted to take a last glance at her exquisite feet before you covered them up again. It might be a while before I see them again."
"It will be never," Elinor said, crossing her arms over her chest.
"Don't count on it, my pet. Whatever scurrilous lies Mrs. Clarke spreads about my so-called goodness, she'll have to admit that I always get what I want. ~ Anne Stuart
Francis Rohan quotes by Anne Stuart
The King of Hell was everything they said he was, both less and more. He was reputed to have the ability to seduce an abbess or the pope himself, and she could see why. It wasn't his physical beauty, which was considerable. He had dark blue eyes behind a fringe of ridiculously long lashes, pale, beautiful skin, the kind of mouth that could bring despair and delight- and what the hell was she doing, thinking about such things?
He looked younger than his reputed age, around forty, and while his long dark hair was streaked with silver it only made him seem more leonine, more dangerous. He was tall, and he moved with an elegant grace that put dancers to shame. He was standing far too close to her, to the gun she'd stolen from Jacobs while he was busy with the carriage, and he was looking at her with far too much interest and absolutely no fear. ~ Anne Stuart
Francis Rohan quotes by Anne Stuart
Freedom of choice makes it possible to plan our lives and to make the most of ourselves. Yet if this freedom lacks noble goals or personal discipline, it degenerates into an inability to give oneself generously to others. ~ Pope Francis
Francis Rohan quotes by Pope Francis
Working for a just distribution of the fruits of the earth and human labor is not mere philanthropy. It is a moral obligation. ~ Pope Francis
Francis Rohan quotes by Pope Francis
A pastoral presence means walking with the People of God, walking in front of them, showing them the way, showing them the path; walking in their midst, to strengthen them in unity; walking behind them, to make sure no one gets left behind, but especially, never to lose the scent of the People of God in order to find new roads. ~ Pope Francis
Francis Rohan quotes by Pope Francis
Let us who hail from Ireland stand to the last by the stars and stripes! ~ Thomas Francis Meagher
Francis Rohan quotes by Thomas Francis Meagher
Ethics has not only to do with mankind but with the animal creation as well. This is witnessed in the purpose of St. Francis of Assisi. Thus we shall arrive that ethics is reverence for all life. This is the ethic of love widened universally. It is the ethic of Jesus now recognized as a necessity of thought ... Only a universal ethic which embraces every living creature can put us in touch with the universe and the will which is there manifest ... ~ Albert Schweitzer
Francis Rohan quotes by Albert Schweitzer
The bee enclosed and through the amber shown Seems buried in the juice which was his own. ~ Francis Bacon
Francis Rohan quotes by Francis Bacon
I will never be an old man. To me, old age is always 15 years older than I am. ~ Francis Bacon
Francis Rohan quotes by Francis Bacon
God is most certainly not threatened by science; He made it all possible. ~ Francis Collins
Francis Rohan quotes by Francis Collins
At this point, godless materialists might be cheering. If humans evolved strictly by mutation and natural selection, who needs God to explain us? To this, I reply: I do. The comparison of chimp and human sequences, interesting as it is, does not tell us what it means to be human. In my views, DNA sequence alone, even if accompanied by a vast trove of data on biological function, will never explain certain special human attributes, such as the knowledge of the Moral Law and the universal search for God. Freeing God from the burden of special acts of creation does not remove Him as the source of the things that make humanity special, and of the universe itself. It merely shows us something of how He operates. ~ Francis S. Collins
Francis Rohan quotes by Francis S. Collins
If we see someone who needs help, do we stop? There is so much suffering and poverty, and a great need for good Samaritans. ~ Pope Francis
Francis Rohan quotes by Pope Francis
I don't see any method at all...Sir ~ Francis Ford Coppola
Francis Rohan quotes by Francis Ford Coppola
We are called to be 'ambassadors for Christ' (2 Cor 5:20). Ours is a ministry of reconciliation ... To be an ambassador for Christ means above all to invite everyone to a renewed personal encounter with the Lord Jesus. ~ Pope Francis
Francis Rohan quotes by Pope Francis
Faith is not a light which scatters all our darkness, but a lamp which guides our steps in the night and suffices for the journey. ~ Pope Francis
Francis Rohan quotes by Pope Francis
Anyone can be self-educated if they find the loose end of something to care about passionately. ~ Francis Spufford
Francis Rohan quotes by Francis Spufford
It lies in the power of man, either permissively to hasten, or actively to shorten, but not to lengthen or extend the limits of his natural life. He only (if any) hath the art to lengthen out his taper that puts it to the best advantage. ~ Francis Quarles
Francis Rohan quotes by Francis Quarles
If a computer breaks it is a tragedy, but poverty, the needs and dramas of so many people end up being considered normal." -Pope Francis ~ Sarah Exner
Francis Rohan quotes by Sarah Exner
[Locating, from scratch, the gene related to a disease is like] trying to find a burned-out light bulb in a house located somewhere between the East and West coasts without knowing the state, much less the town or street the house is on. ~ Francis Collins
Francis Rohan quotes by Francis Collins
It Is The Wisdom Of Crocodiles, That Shed Tears When They Would Devour ~ Francis Bacon
Francis Rohan quotes by Francis Bacon
In his book Shopping Malls and Other Sacred Spaces, Jon Pahl argues that the consumer aspect of American Christianity is a kind of a feel-good cop-out of deeper truths. But for those who have been hurt by the church, who have been told their bodies are unacceptable in the eyes of God, or have witnessed other's pain perpetuated by religion, it is nothing of the sort. It's actually freedom. And it's freedom that has been sought and found by religious outsiders for millennia. The saints we revere like Joan of Arc and St. Francis of Assisi, were difficult nomadic outsiders who created their own religious spaces when none could be found for them. Even the model of Jesus, walking smelly and dirty in the desert with his band of fishermen, all men, was a rogue, cast out by the religious authorities. But these thoughts can be cold comfort when you are the one deemed unacceptable, deemed sinful by the very community that by its very precepts ought to love you. ~ Lyz Lenz
Francis Rohan quotes by Lyz Lenz
It is impossible to love and be wise. ~ Francis Bacon
Francis Rohan quotes by Francis Bacon
Cinema without risk is like having no sex and expecting to have a baby. ~ Francis Ford Coppola
Francis Rohan quotes by Francis Ford Coppola
To die is to be with the Lord. It is not just an idea, it is a reality. ~ Francis Schaeffer
Francis Rohan quotes by Francis Schaeffer
I'm basically an optimist because I do think there's this historical modernisation process, and by and large it's been very beneficial to people. But there are blips. History doesn't proceed in a linear way. ~ Francis Fukuyama
Francis Rohan quotes by Francis Fukuyama
Where is the land of Luthany,
Where is the tract of Elenore?
I am bound therefore.

'Pierce thy heart to find the key;
With thee take
Only what none else would keep;
Learn to dream when thou dost wake;
Learn to wake when thou dost sleep.
Learn to water joy with tears,
Learn from fears to vanquish fears;
To hope, for thou dar'st not despair;
Exult, for that thou dar'st not grieve;
Plough thou the rock until it bear;
Know, for thou else couldst not believe;
Lose, that the lost thou may'st receive;
Die, for none other way canst live.

'When earth and heave lay down their veil,
And that apocalypse turns thee pale;
When thy seeing blindeth thee
To what thy fellow-mortals see;
When their sight to thee is sightless;
Their living, death; their light, most lightless;
Search no more--
Pass the gates of Luthany,
Tread the region Elenore!'

Where is the land of Luthany?
And where the region Elenore?
I do faint therefore.

'When to the new eyes of thee
All things by immortal power,
Near or far,
Hiddenly
To each other linked are,
That thou canst not stir a flower
Without troubling of a star;
When thy song is shield and mirror
To the fair snake curled pain,
Where thou dar'st affront her terror
That on her thou may'st attain
Persean Conquest; seek no more,
O seek no more! ~ Francis Thompson
Francis Rohan quotes by Francis Thompson
I am fully conscious that a complete presentation of the regions visited is a task beyond my power. All I can strive to do is convey an illusion-my own illusion ~ Francis Kingdon Ward
Francis Rohan quotes by Francis Kingdon Ward
As Brother Francis readily admitted, his mastery of pre-Deluge English was far from masterful yet. The way nouns could sometimes modify other nouns in that tongue had always been one of his weak points. In Latin, as in most simple dialects of the region, a construction like servus puer meant about the same thing as puer servus, and even in English slave boy meant boy slave. But there the similarity ended. He had finally learned that house cat did not mean cat house, and that a dative of purpose or possession, as in mihi amicus, was somehow conveyed by dog food or sentry box even without inflection. But what of a triple appositive like fallout survival shelter? Brother Francis shook his head. The Warning on Inner Hatch mentioned food, water, and air; and yet surely these were not necessities for the fiends of Hell. At times, the novice found pre-Deluge English more perplexing than either Intermediate Angelology or Saint Leslie's theological calculus. ~ Walter M. Miller Jr.
Francis Rohan quotes by Walter M. Miller Jr.
Again the message to experimentalists is: Be sensible but don't be impressed too much by negative arguments. If at all possible, try it and see what turns up. Theorists almost always dislike this sort of approach. ~ Francis Crick
Francis Rohan quotes by Francis Crick
Many Spirit-filled authors have exhausted the thesaurus in order to describe God with the glory He deserves. His perfect holiness, by definition, assures us that our words can't contain Him. Isn't it a comfort to worship a God we cannot exaggerate? ~ Francis Chan
Francis Rohan quotes by Francis Chan
This isn't a very popular idea in the American church, where we separate our love for God from our service to God. We say we love God most, but it's a vague statement that yields little action. ~ Francis Chan
Francis Rohan quotes by Francis Chan
The main importance of Francis Bacon's influence does not lie in any peculiar theory of inductive reasoning which he happened to express, but in the revolt against second-hand information of which he was a leader. ~ Alfred North Whitehead
Francis Rohan quotes by Alfred North Whitehead
You can eclipse the sun, but the truth will always shine through. ~ Jaree Francis
Francis Rohan quotes by Jaree Francis
Putin has big plans for Russia ... Hats off to the Russians. I think I would just get along very well with Vladimir Putin. ~ Pope Francis
Francis Rohan quotes by Pope Francis
