Every encounter with human truth - Jane Austen deftly showing how little we know our own motives; Dickens revealing the meaning of "economy" in the cheerful and charitable housekeeping of Esther Summerson, his finest heroine; or Shakespeare offering us the foolish Lear, mad and childish and yet "every inch a king" - can expand the soul; it helps to set us free from the common delusions of our time, the lies we believe and the lies we tell. But ~ Anthony M. Esolen
Esther Summerson quotes by Anthony M. Esolen
I found every breath of air, and every scent, and every flower and leaf and blade of grass and every passing cloud, and everything in nature, more beautiful and wonderful to me than I had ever found it yet. This was my first gain from my illness. How little I had lost, when the wide world was so full of delight for me. ~ Charles Dickens
Esther Summerson quotes by Charles Dickens
I was married then. I was the happiest of the happy. - Esther Summerson ~ Charles Dickens
Esther Summerson quotes by Charles Dickens
Middlemarch is a novel that is diminished by being put on the screen. It can't help but be, because so much of what we enjoy in Middlemarch is the interplay between what the characters do and what we know about them because of the telling voice.

It's less of a problem for the cinema when it deals with novels that are purely concerned with action and what people do. I haven't thought this through, and I'm just trying it now to see what it sounds like. But maybe it would be less a problem with novels that are told in the first person. The interesting thing to me about Middlemarch, and Thackeray's Vanity Fair, and several other great novels, is precisely this omniscient, as we call it, third person, which naive readers mistake for the author. It isn't George Eliot who is saying this; it's a voice that George Eliot adopts to tell this story.

There can be something very interesting in a novel like Bleak House, which was also done very well on the television by the same adapter, Andrew Davis. Now, Bleak House is told in two voices, as you remember. One is the somewhat trying Esther Summerson, who is a paradigm of every kind of virtue, and the other is a different sort of voice entirely, a voice that tells the story in the present tense, which was unusual for the time, a voice that doesn't seem to have a main character attached to it.

But I think that Dickens is playing a very subtle game here. I've noticed a couple of things about that second narrat ~ Philip Pullman
Esther Summerson quotes by Philip Pullman
You do not know what all around you see in Esther Summerson, how many hearts she touches and awakens, what sacred admiration and what love she wins.
Mr. Woodcourt ~ Charles Dickens
Esther Summerson quotes by Charles Dickens
Stability says there must be no evasion; instead attend to the real, to the real necessity however uncomfortable that might be. Stability brings us from a feeling of alienation, perhaps from the escape into fantasy and daydreaming, into the state of reality. It will not allow us to evade the inner truth of whatever it is that we have to do, however dreary and boring and apparently unfruitful that may seem. It involves listening...to the particular demands of whatever this task and this moment in time is asking; no more and no less. ~ Esther De Waal
Esther Summerson quotes by Esther De Waal
I have to finish what I started. I'd have had that beast on my spear by now, except for Prince Meleager. He saw me wound it and thought I was in danger. The gods protect me from men who mean well! ~ Esther M. Friesner
Esther Summerson quotes by Esther M. Friesner
I personally like the certainty of death. It is amazingly relaxing to realize that one can't do everything. If I knew I were going to live forever, I would feel obligated to fix all my imperfections. I would have to learn many more languages; I would worry about my teeth not holding out; I would have to make amends for all the mistakes I have made. ~ Esther Dyson
Esther Summerson quotes by Esther Dyson
In old age the secret springs of human nature are apt to come out. ~ Esther Forbes
Esther Summerson quotes by Esther Forbes
Sometimes you walk into things, that, if you were paying attention, vibrationally, you would know right from the beginning that it wasn't what you are wanting. In most cases, your initial knee-jerk response was a pretty good indicator of how it was going to turn out later. The things that give most of you the most grief are those things that initially you had a feeling response about, but then you talked yourself out of it for one reason or another. ~ Esther Hicks
Esther Summerson quotes by Esther Hicks
When you say "Yes" to something, you include something you do want in your experience. When you say "No" to something, you include something you don't want in your experience. ~ Esther Hicks
Esther Summerson quotes by Esther Hicks
"Ask, and it is given" means that whether you are a full blossoming genius human, or whether you are the one-celled amoeba in the ocean, or a cell in one of your bodies, when it is concluded that something else is preferred (no matter how developed the consciousness is) every time a preference is noted, Nonphysical Energy rushes forth to answer it. It is the promise of our evolving beingness. ~ Esther Hicks
Esther Summerson quotes by Esther Hicks
All you gotta do is chill out ... Let go of control and chill out ... Let it be, Trust. ~ Esther Hicks
Esther Summerson quotes by Esther Hicks
Esther liked books out where everyone could see them, a sort of graphic index to the intricate labyrinth of her mind arrayed to impress the most casual guest, a system of immediate introduction which she had found to obtain in a number of grimy intellectual households in Greenwich Village. ~ William Gaddis
Esther Summerson quotes by William Gaddis
Everything you want is coming. Relax and let the universe pick the timing and the way. ~ Esther Hicks
Esther Summerson quotes by Esther Hicks
He says,'Why is it love, Esther? Why call it that?'
'Because. Why is what you do art? Because you say so. ~ Gwendoline Riley
Esther Summerson quotes by Gwendoline Riley
While much has been written about the aggressive manifestations of male sexuality, it is not sufficiently appreciated that the erotic realm also offers men a restorative experience for their more tender side. The body is our original mother tongue, and for a lot of men it remains the only language of closeness that hasn't been spoiled. Through sex, men can recapture the pure pleasure of connection without having to compress their hard-to-articulate needs into the prison of words. ~ Esther Perel
Esther Summerson quotes by Esther Perel
Stream of Source Energy flows to you and through you - and that it is you. This Stream flowed before the physical Being that you know as you was born, and it will continue to flow once the physical Being that you know as you experiences what you call "death." Every living thing, animal, human, or plant, experiences that which is called death, with no exception. Spirit, which is who we really are, is eternal. So what death must be is but a changing of the perspective of that eternal Spirit. If ~ Esther Hicks
Esther Summerson quotes by Esther Hicks
Wonderful art can spring from misery,I'm the last person to deny that.I'd go even further:the best works of art of all time are probably stemmed from the deep human sorrow or hellish frustration, the death of a loved one or a divorce and yes:jealousy.Heartache and impotence as the man-spring for making the unverifiable verifiable and for giving it face. How romantic, beautiful and especially useful pain and misery can be. ~ Esther Verhoef
Esther Summerson quotes by Esther Verhoef
As she fell, Esther wasn't worried about being blown off course and plummeting into the rocks below. She wasn't worried about hitting the shallows and pin diving to the ocean floor and shattering her spine. She wasn't even worried about Cthulhu. (Okay, maybe a little.) What she worried about was Eugene's willingness to jump. The way he glanced down at the water far below and looked at it like it was home. The way he stepped lightly from the cliff's edge, and the way he fell through the air faster than she did, dragged down by earth's magnetic field. The way he flickered in the sunlight as he hit the water, the same way Tyler Durden flashed on-screen four times before you saw him solidly. Foreshadowing the twist to come. Eugene was afraid of demons, and monsters, and above all the dark, but he was not afraid of death. That scared her more than anything. ~ Krystal Sutherland
Esther Summerson quotes by Krystal Sutherland
Law of Attraction is not punishing you. Law of Attraction is supporting you with evidence of your vibrational frequency. ~ Esther Hicks
Esther Summerson quotes by Esther Hicks
there is more than a hint of arrogance in the assumption that we can make our relationships permanent, ~ Esther Perel
Esther Summerson quotes by Esther Perel
Think them into being; see them, visualize them, and expect them - and they will be. And you will be guided, inspired, or led to the perfect action that will bring about the process that will lead you to that which you seek ... and there is a great difference between that which we have spoken and the way most of the world is going about it. ~ Esther Hicks
Esther Summerson quotes by Esther Hicks
A young girl's heart is indestructible. ~ Esther Hautzig
Esther Summerson quotes by Esther Hautzig
I lied to you,' she said, hanging her head in shame, 'more than once. In fact, I swore that my lies were truth. I can't understand how it could have happened. It just came out of my mouth and by the time I realised what I'd done, it was too late.
'It's never too late to realise that you were mistaken, Sophiel. ~ A.O. Esther
Esther Summerson quotes by A.O. Esther
Eroticism thrives in the space between the self and the other. ~ Esther Perel
Esther Summerson quotes by Esther Perel
The expansion is inevitable. ~ Esther Hicks
Esther Summerson quotes by Esther Hicks
Esther always avoided asking questions of Lydley, who found an answer as she found a key, by pouring out a pocketful of miscellanies. ~ George Eliot
Esther Summerson quotes by George Eliot
The reason that you call it 'grief' is because you've been programmed to believe that you should feel bad about death. ~ Esther Hicks
Esther Summerson quotes by Esther Hicks
If you would stop analyzing everything and just look for things to appreciate, you would live happily ever after. ~ Esther Hicks
Esther Summerson quotes by Esther Hicks
Death is an inevitable cycle. But sickness before death is a symptom of resistance. Most people think they've got to get sick to die. But, you could be like the cat who chooses to get run over. Or, you could just lie down in your bed happily one night, so content and thoughtless, wanting nothing in this physical world; and just reemerge into Pure Positive Energy ... You can play it out any way you choose. ~ Esther Hicks
Esther Summerson quotes by Esther Hicks
Love and appreciation are identical vibrations. Appreciation is the vibration of alignment with who-you-are. Appreciation is the absence of everything that feels bad and the presence of everything that feels good. When you focus upon what you want - ;when you tell the story of how you want your life to be - you will come closer and closer to the vicinity of appreciation, and when you reach it, it will pull you toward all things that you consider to be good in a very powerful way. ~ Esther Hicks
Esther Summerson quotes by Esther Hicks
Before you can live anything, in what you are calling physical manifestation - you have to have conjured it in vibrational form. You have to have imagined it before it can become a reality. Everything that you are living here in this physical body, you have imagined the essence of it before you are living it. ~ Esther Hicks
Esther Summerson quotes by Esther Hicks
I think I have the right to know what Steve Forbes paid in taxes - I don't think there should be a law. I think there should be a presumption. I wouldn't vote for a guy who wouldn't reveal what he paid in taxes. That kind of thing. ~ Esther Dyson
Esther Summerson quotes by Esther Dyson
When you FEEL healthy and vital and alive and prosperous ... you attract more of all those things. ~ Esther Hicks
Esther Summerson quotes by Esther Hicks
It is a common thing for people to begin to lean in the direction of recovery, only to stop and take score too soon. And when they still find unwanted symptoms or conditions, they then offer resistant thought and lose the improved ground they have gained. With consistent releasing of resistance, all unwanted conditions will subside, returning you to your natural state of Well-Being. ~ Esther Hicks
Esther Summerson quotes by Esther Hicks
Nothing, in all of the Universe is more delicious than to be in this physical body allowing the fullness that is you to be present in the moment. ~ Esther Hicks
Esther Summerson quotes by Esther Hicks
I always felt that if I made a movie, it would be one movie; I didn't see how they could make 26 swimming movies. ~ Esther Williams
Esther Summerson quotes by Esther Williams
I'm figuring it out as I go, I'm good at that. ~ Esther Hicks
Esther Summerson quotes by Esther Hicks
Trouble looms when monogamy is no longer a free expression of loyalty but a form of enforced compliance. ~ Esther Perel
Esther Summerson quotes by Esther Perel
Her visits to her former hometown were infrequent and often painful. Pilgrimages fueled by the tepid oxygen of family duty, unease, guilt. The more Esther loved her parents, the more helpless she felt, as they aged, to protect them from harm. A moral coward, she kept her distance. ~ Joyce Carol Oates
Esther Summerson quotes by Joyce Carol Oates
I know I always carry her with me, and to have a piece of her grace shine through me is a gift I will continually strive to earn. ~ Esther Earl
Esther Summerson quotes by Esther Earl
The Universe is responding to who you FEEL you are. ~ Esther Hicks
Esther Summerson quotes by Esther Hicks
If you knew your potential to feel good, you would ask no one to be different so that you can feel good. You would free yourself of all of that cumbersome impossibility of needing to control the world, or control your mate, or control your child. You are the only one who creates your reality. For no one else can think for you, no one else can do it. It is only you, every bit of it you. ~ Esther Hicks
Esther Summerson quotes by Esther Hicks
Everything is unfolding perfectly. And as you relax and find ease in your attitude of trust, knowing that Well-Being is your birth-right, amazing things will happen. Things the likes of which you have not seen before. ~ Esther Hicks
Esther Summerson quotes by Esther Hicks
Dyson's Law: Do ask; don't lie. ~ Esther Dyson
Esther Summerson quotes by Esther Dyson
