Perhaps most surprising of all, the deposed and imprisoned King Henry was not murdered. This had been the fate of the two Plantagenet kings who had lost their crowns before him: Edward II died while in custody at Berkeley Castle in 1327, while Richard II was killed at Pontefract in 1400, the year following his deposition. Ironically, Henry's survival was perhaps a mark of his uniquely pitiful and ineffectual approach to kingship - for it was much harder to justify killing a man who had done nothing evil or tyrannical, but had earned his fate thanks to his dewy-eyed simplicity. Permitting Henry to remain alive was a bold decision that Edward IV would come to regret. But in 1465 it must have struck the king as a brave and magnanimous act. ~ Dan Jones
Edward Ii quotes by Dan Jones
Evil be to him who evil thinks. ~ Edward II Of England
Edward Ii quotes by Edward II Of England
The mightiest kings have had their minions; Great Alexander loved Hephaestion, The conquering Hercules for Hylas wept; And for Patroclus, stern Achilles drooped. And not kings only, but the wisest men: The Roman Tully loved Octavius, Grave Socrates, wild Alcibiades. ~ Christopher Marlowe
Edward Ii quotes by Christopher Marlowe
When I was placed upon the block," Hughes remembered, "a Mr. McGee came up and felt of me and asked me what I could do. 'You look like a right smart nigger,' said he, 'Virginia always produces good darkies.'" In fact, more than two-thirds of the people transported to New Orleans between July 1829 and the end of 1831 came from the three states of North Carolina, Virginia, and Maryland. The combined share for North Carolina and the Chesapeake - the oldest ~ Edward E. Baptist
Edward Ii quotes by Edward E. Baptist
A common allegiance to form of expression that is identified with no single national unit is likely to prove one of the most potent symbols of the freedom of the human spirit that the world has yet known. ~ Edward Sapir
Edward Ii quotes by Edward Sapir
Man has much more to fear from the passions of his fellow-creatures, than from the convulsions of the elements. ~ Edward Gibbon
Edward Ii quotes by Edward Gibbon
The Rosary mystically transports us to Mary's side as she is busy watching over the human growth of Christ in the home of Nazareth. This enables her to train us and to mold us with the same care, until Christ is 'fully formed' in us ... Why should we not once more have recourse to the Rosary, with the same faith as those who have gone before us? ~ Pope John Paul II
Edward Ii quotes by Pope John Paul II
I always say Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is my biggest influence. But for painters, I like many, many painters, but I love Francis Bacon the most, and Edward Hopper. ~ David Lynch
Edward Ii quotes by David Lynch
Ronon Dex could drop Edward Cullen with a look. ~ Annalyse Tar
Edward Ii quotes by Annalyse Tar
[On World War II:] The war, which destroyed so much of everything, was also constructive, in a way. It established clearly the cold, and finally unhypocritical fact that the most important thing on earth to men today is money. ~ Janet Flanner
Edward Ii quotes by Janet Flanner
By sowing frugality we reap liberty, a golden harvest. ~ Agesilaus II
Edward Ii quotes by Agesilaus II
World War II ended in a battle for a single buildng, Germany's Reichstag ... 7,000 German troops defending the building ... Nearly 5,000 men died in a battle for the building. ~ Andrei Cherny
Edward Ii quotes by Andrei Cherny
Centuries roll, customs change, but, ever since the time of the earliest mother, woman yearns to be the soother. ~ Edward Bulwer-Lytton, 1st Baron Lytton
Edward Ii quotes by Edward Bulwer-Lytton, 1st Baron Lytton
Ireland, like Ukraine, is a largely rural country which suffers from its proximity to a more powerful industrialised neighbour. Ireland's contribution to the history of tractors is the genius engineer Harry Ferguson, who was born in 1884, near Belfast.
Ferguson was a clever and mischievous man, who also had a passion for aviation. It is said that he was the first man in Great Britain to build and fly his own aircraft in 1909. But he soon came to believe that improving efficiency of food production would be his unique service to mankind. Harry Ferguson's first two-furrow plough was attached to the chassis of the Ford Model T car converted into a tractor, aptly named Eros. This plough was mounted on the rear of the tractor, and through ingenious use of balance springs it could be raised or lowered by the driver using a lever beside his seat. Ford, meanwhile, was developing its own tractors. The Ferguson design was more advanced, and made use of hydraulic linkage, but Ferguson knew that despite his engineering genius, he could not achieve his dream on his own. He needed a larger company to produce his design. So he made an informal agreement with Henry Ford, sealed only by a handshake. This Ford-Ferguson partnership gave to the world a new type of Fordson tractor far superior to any that had been known before, and the precursor of all modern-type tractors. However, this agreement by a handshake collapsed in 1947 when Henry Ford II took over the empire of his father, and st ~ Marina Lewycka
Edward Ii quotes by Marina Lewycka
We need the security standards to apply to the internet. We need to be able to trust that when we send our emails through Verizon, that Verizon isn't sharing with the NSA, that Verizon isn't sharing them with the FBI or German intelligence or French intelligence or Russian intelligence or Chinese intelligence. ~ Edward Snowden
Edward Ii quotes by Edward Snowden
Examine yourselves, to see whether you are holding to your faith. Test yourselves. Do you not realize that Jesus Christ is in you? (II Corinthians 13:5) ~ Neville Goddard
Edward Ii quotes by Neville Goddard
I like trees because they seem more resigned to the way they have to live than other things do. I feel as if this tree knows everything I ever think of when I sit here. When I come back to it, I never have to remind it of anything; I begin just where I left off. ~ Willa Cather
Edward Ii quotes by Willa Cather
My pictures are not that interesting, nor the subject matter. They are simply a collection of facts; my book is more like a collection of Ready-mades. ~ Edward Ruscha
Edward Ii quotes by Edward Ruscha
I'm trying to photograph an old offshore oil city that is lying in decay in the Caspian Sea, but I've been having a hard time getting there. ~ Edward Burtynsky
Edward Ii quotes by Edward Burtynsky
There is no solution available, I assure you, to save Earth's biodiversity other than the preservation of natural environments in reserves large enough to maintain wild populations sustainably. Only Nature can serve as the planetary ark. ~ Edward O. Wilson
Edward Ii quotes by Edward O. Wilson
And it occurred to him at last, with the finality of knowledge, that he had never known another human being with any intimacy or trust or with the human warmth of commitment. ~ John Edward Williams
Edward Ii quotes by John Edward Williams
I collect the walks of my life. Some people have asked me if I have walked so very far to merit such an activity, but I say to them, it's not about how far you have walked, but how thoroughly. ~ Edward Carey
Edward Ii quotes by Edward Carey
Do not abandon yourselves to despair. We are the Easter people and hallelujah is our song. ~ Pope John Paul II
Edward Ii quotes by Pope John Paul II
I don't think you should sit around and wait for people to give you an opportunity to express yourself or do your work, or whatever. Actors have to be producers and writers have to be producers. ~ Edward Norton
Edward Ii quotes by Edward Norton
I did not believe in the war. I thought it was wrong to go into any war. And I got to the war, and saw the Germans, and I changed my mind. I decided we were right going into World War II. ~ Andy Rooney
Edward Ii quotes by Andy Rooney
I guess that would have been 1968. I was a freshman in college and I wasn't writing good poems, but I was at least trying to write poems then. ~ Edward Hirsch
Edward Ii quotes by Edward Hirsch
To treat fiction as if it were a religious or moral sermon is about as far from the actuality of literature as it is possible to get and indeed it is, in my opinion, the purest form of intellectual barbarism. ~ Edward W. Said
Edward Ii quotes by Edward W. Said
Trust perfected is prayer perfected. Trust looks to receive the thing asked for and gets it. Trust is not a belief that God can bless or that He will bless, but that He does bless, here and now. Trust always operates in the present tense. Hope looks toward the future. Trust looks to the present. Hope expects. Trust possesses. Trust receives what prayer acquires. So, what prayer needs, at all times, is abiding and abundant trust. ~ Edward McKendree Bounds
Edward Ii quotes by Edward McKendree Bounds
Valuing names as they do, Realists are sparing with them. They are likely to be known only as Joe or Bill or Plato. And they don't smile much.
Nominalists have more fun. They are known as Aristotle or Decimus-et-Ultimus Barziza, or as Edward John Barrington Douglas-Scott-Montague, or perhaps by one name in childhood and several others in the course of life.
A firm Realist misses out on one of the most satisfying of all human activities
the assumption of secret identities. A man who has lived and never been someone else has never lived.
It is true that occasionally there can be embarrassment in secret identities, but only a Realist will take the whole thing seriously enough to hit you. So have your fun, and avoid Realists. ~ Alexei Panshin
Edward Ii quotes by Alexei Panshin
[The] vain and transitory scenes of human greatness are unworthy of a serious thought. ~ Edward Gibbon
Edward Ii quotes by Edward Gibbon
Many will view the compromises that will be made during your negotiations as painful concessions. But why not view them as peace offerings, ones that will provide in return the priceless gifts of hope, security and freedom for our children and our children's? ~ Abdallah II Of Jordan
Edward Ii quotes by Abdallah II Of Jordan
Life is worth living and no matter what it throws at you it is important to keep your eyes on the prize of the happiness that will come. Even when the Death Railway reduced us to little more than animals, humanity in the shape of our saintly medical officers triumphed over barbarism.
Remember, while it always seems darkest before the dawn, perseverance pays off and the good times will return. ~ Alistair Urquhart
Edward Ii quotes by Alistair Urquhart
It was a dark and stormy night; the rain fell in torrents, except at occasional intervals, when it was checked by a violent gust of wind which swept up the streets (for it is in London that our scene lies), rattling along the housetops, and fiercely agitating the scanty flame of the lamps that struggled against the darkness. ~ Edward Bulwer-Lytton
Edward Ii quotes by Edward Bulwer-Lytton
Sloane looked at him for a moment, his eyes bright and intent as they had been before the war. Then the film of indifference settled over them, and he turned away from Stoner and shuffled some papers on his desk. ~ John Edward Williams
Edward Ii quotes by John Edward Williams
With "Good Night, and Good Luck," I think it's kind of obvious what [Truman Capote]'s getting at there, and the importance of how it's playing out today, that is journalism doing, are the journalists doing their job, are they being the other checks and balances in our country that the way that obviously Edward R. Murrow was back then. ~ Philip Seymour Hoffman
Edward Ii quotes by Philip Seymour Hoffman
Economic activity, especially the activity of a market economy, cannot be conducted in an institutional, juridical or political vacuum. On the contrary, it presupposes sure guarantees of individual freedom and private property, as well as a stable currency and efficient public services. ~ Pope John Paul II
Edward Ii quotes by Pope John Paul II
The most profound indication of social malignancy ... no sense of humor. None of the monoliths could take a joke. ~ Edward Albee
