The more a man drinketh of the world, the more it intoxicateth. ~ Francis Bacon
Bacon quotes by Francis Bacon
Slap some bacon on a biscuit and let's go! We're burnin' daylight! ~ John Wayne
Bacon quotes by John Wayne
For many parts of Nature can neither be invented with sufficient subtlety, nor demonstrated with sufficient perspicuity, nor accommodated unto use with sufficient dexterity, without the aid and intervening of the mathematics, of which sort are perspective, music, astronomy, cosmography, architecture, engineery, and divers others. ~ Francis Bacon
Bacon quotes by Francis Bacon
It is a formidable list of jobs: the whole of the spinning industry, the whole of the dyeing industry, the whole of the weaving industry. The whole catering industry and - which would not please Lady Astor, perhaps - the whole of the nation's brewing and distilling. All the preserving, pickling and bottling industry, all the bacon-curing. And (since in those days a man was often absent from home for months together on war or business) a very large share in the management of landed estates. Here are the women's jobs - and what has become of them? They are all being handled by men. It is all very well to say that woman's place is the home - but modern civilisation has taken all these pleasant and profitable activities out of the home, where the women looked after them, and handed them over to big industry, to be directed and organised by men at the head of large factories. Even the dairy-maid in her simple bonnet has gone, to be replaced by a male mechanic in charge of a mechanical milking plant. ~ Dorothy L. Sayers
Bacon quotes by Dorothy L. Sayers
Bacon is like a good pair of Levi's-it never goes out of style. ~ Michael Symon
Bacon quotes by Michael Symon
There have been a few occurrences where people in restaurants have sent me a rasher of bacon, which I am not going to turn my nose up at. I never let them down. ~ Nick Offerman
Bacon quotes by Nick Offerman
The natures and dispositions of men are, not without truth, distinguished from the predominance of the planets. ~ Francis Bacon
Bacon quotes by Francis Bacon
I'll never leave if you keep feeding me bacon every day, Peter says to Aunt Beth. ~ H.M. Ward
Bacon quotes by H.M. Ward
Donna was an enigma wrapped in bacon wrapped in a crescent roll. ~ Tina Fey
Bacon quotes by Tina Fey
Should I be insulted that you're so eager to enjoy another man's pork?" I leaned out of the bathroom, toothbrush mid-swipe, and grinned. "Ethan Sullivan, did you just make a joke?" He hadn't, at least from the look on his face. But I wasn't threatened by the possessiveness in his eyes. Because bacon. ~ Chloe Neill
Bacon quotes by Chloe Neill
The greatest justice in life is that your vision and looks tend to go simultaneously. ~ Kevin Bacon
Bacon quotes by Kevin Bacon
Mr Gray didn't care much for Jonesy's body (or so he told himself; in truth it was hard not to feel at least some affection for something capable of providing such unexpected pleasures as 'bacon' and 'murder'), but it did have to take him another couple of hundred miles. ~ Stephen King
Bacon quotes by Stephen King
On harsh, frigid January days, when the winds are relentless and the snow piles up around us, I often think of our small feathered friends back on the Third Line. I wonder if the old feeder is still standing in the orchard and if anyone thinks to put out a few crumbs and some bacon drippings for our beautiful, hungry, winter birds. In the stark, white landscape they provided a welcome splash of colour and their songs gave us hope through the long, silent winter. ~ Arlene Stafford-Wilson
Bacon quotes by Arlene Stafford-Wilson
stoodAloof from streets, encompass'd with a wood.Dryden.2. Applied to persons, it often insinuates caution and circumspection. Turn on the bloody hounds with heads of steel,And make the cowards stand aloof at bay.Shak.Henry VI. Going northwards, aloof, as long as they had any doubt of being pursued, at last when they were out of reach, they turned and crossed the ocean to Spain.Bacon. The king would not, by any means, enter the city, until he had aloof seen the cross set up upon the greater tower of Granada, whereby it became Christian ground.Bacon'sHen. VII. Two pots stood by a river, one of brass, the other of clay. The water carried them away; the earthen vessel kept aloof from t'other.L'Estrange'sFables. The strong may fight aloof; Ancaeus try'dHis force too ~ Samuel Johnson
Bacon quotes by Samuel Johnson

LUNG CANCER is linked to cigarette smoking - but L&M still plug their cigarettes as "just what the doctor ordered. ~ Tony Bacon
Bacon quotes by Tony Bacon
I came in looking for coffee, but the smell of bacon wafts through the air and my body follows on its own. Coffee turns into two eggs, bacon and cheese on a roll, an orange juice and a chocolate pudding. Actually, two chocolate puddings. Because people who pass by fresh chocolate pudding without grabbing one just can't be trusted. ~ Vi Keeland
Bacon quotes by Vi Keeland
Man prefers to believe what he prefers to be true. ~ Francis Bacon
Bacon quotes by Francis Bacon
Throughout Finnegans Wake Joyce specifies the Tower of Babel as the tower of Sleep, that is, the tower of the witless assumption, or what Bacon calls the reign of the Idols. ~ Marshall McLuhan
Bacon quotes by Marshall McLuhan
The colonel laughed, effectively halting Bingley's speech. "Uncharacteristically reclusive? Do we speak if the same man? Darcy's very character is defined by his reclusiveness! He prefers to keep his own counsel, especially when he ought to do the opposite - the bacon-brained buffoon. ~ KaraLynne Mackrory
Bacon quotes by KaraLynne Mackrory
The noblest works and foundations have proceeded from childless men, which have sought to express the image of their minds, where those of their bodies have failed. So the care of posterity is most in them that they have no posterity. ~ Francis Bacon
Bacon quotes by Francis Bacon
Is that Nutella and bacon? ~ Lisi Harrison
Bacon quotes by Lisi Harrison
Aaron reached into his jacket pocket and took out his Bible, a gift from his father, Captain Benjamin K. Matthews, on the the day he had ridden off to war. Aaron opened to the Psalms, intending to read, but his eyes were heavy and closed against his will. O death, where is thy sting? Pastor Blackwell had told him that death had no power over him, but he sure felt that sting now. O grave, where is thy victory? How much longer would it be? Just four miles from home. Would Mama ever know?
Shiloh, the place of peace. Good ground to die on. Holy ground. ~ Karl A. Bacon
Bacon quotes by Karl A. Bacon
Life is too short not to order the bacon dessert. ~ George Takei
Bacon quotes by George Takei
Hope is the most beneficial of all the affections, and doth much to the prolongation of life ... ~ Francis Bacon
Bacon quotes by Francis Bacon
You proposed over a plate of burned bacon? ~ Shelly Crane
Bacon quotes by Shelly Crane
health risks of diets loaded with red meat, such as hamburger and steak, and processed meats, such as hot dogs, bacon, and cold cuts. They found that over a ten-year period, men who ate the equivalent of a quarter-pounder hamburger a day had a 22 percent higher risk of dying from cancer and a 27 percent higher risk of dying from heart disease than those men whose diet did not contain such red meat. With women, it was even more impressive. Women who ate large amounts of red meat had a 20 percent higher risk of dying from cancer and a 50 percent higher risk of dying from heart disease. ~ Richard Furman
Bacon quotes by Richard Furman
A man cannot speak to his son, but as a father; to his wife, but as a husband; to his enemy, but upon terms: whereas a friend may speak, as the case requires, and not as it sorteth with the person. ~ Francis Bacon
Bacon quotes by Francis Bacon
I love you," she said, stomach growling.
"You love bacon."
"I have a big heart," she protested. "There's room enough for both of you in it. ~ Hailey Edwards
Bacon quotes by Hailey Edwards

Bacon quotes by David Wong
I remember when you used to have your profession on your passport and I always thought that being a painter was the best one to be, because my heroes were Goya and Francis Bacon. ~ Damien Hirst
Bacon quotes by Damien Hirst
It's like the Twilight Zone," murmured Alex, her eyes big. "Watching them work together on anything, even when it's just eggs and bacon. ~ Jennifer L. Armentrout
Bacon quotes by Jennifer L. Armentrout
Aedion snorted. "Hurry up with the eggs. I'm going to die of starvation."
"Make the bacon, or you don't get any."
Aedion could hardly move fast enough. ~ Sarah J. Maas
Bacon quotes by Sarah J. Maas
People often seem surprised that I choose to write science fiction and fantasy - I think they expect a history professor to write historical fiction, or literary fiction, associating academia with the kinds of novels that academic lit critics prefer. But I feel that speculative fiction, especially science fiction and fantasy, is a lot more like the pre-modern literature I spend most of my time studying than most modern literature is. Ursula Le Guin has described speculative fiction authors as "realists of a larger reality" because we imagine other ways of being, alternatives to how people live now, different worlds, and raise questions about hope and change and possibilities that different worlds contain.

....

Writing for a more distant audience, authors tended to be speculative, using exotic perspectives, fantastic creatures, imaginary lands, allegories, prophecies, stories within stories, techniques which, like science fiction and fantasy, use alternatives rather than one reality in order to ask questions, not about the way things are, but about plural ways things have been and could be. Such works have an empathy across time, expecting and welcoming an audience as alien as the other worlds that they describe. When I read Voltaire responding to Francis Bacon, responding to Petrarch, responding to Boethius, responding to Seneca, responding to Plutarch, I want to respond to them too, to pass it on. So it makes sense to me to answer in the genre people ha ~ Ada Palmer
Bacon quotes by Ada Palmer
Salomon saith, There is no new thing upon the earth. So that as Plato had an imagination, that all knowledge was but remembrance; so Salomon giveth his sentence, that all novelty is but oblivion. ~ Francis Bacon
Bacon quotes by Francis Bacon
To spend too much time in them [studying] is sloth, to use them too much for ornament is affectation, to make judgment wholly by their rules is the humor* of a scholar ... . ~ Francis Bacon
Bacon quotes by Francis Bacon
But best of all ... was the satisfaction of having once again saved the bacon. ~ Joanna Jordan
Bacon quotes by Joanna Jordan
Opportunity makes a thief. ~ Francis Bacon
Bacon quotes by Francis Bacon
Without looking, I felt his stare burn my skin. A burn way more pleasurable than bacon grease. I had him. He just didn't know it yet. ~ Lynn Vroman
Bacon quotes by Lynn Vroman
If a man will begin with certainties, he shall end in doubts; but if he will be content to begin with doubts, he shall end in certainties. ~ Francis Bacon
Bacon quotes by Francis Bacon
I've had photographs taken for portraits because I very much prefer working from the photographs than from models ... I couldn't attempt to do a portrait from photographs of somebody I didn't know ... ~ Francis Bacon
Bacon quotes by Francis Bacon
The wisdom of the ancients. ~ Francis Bacon
Bacon quotes by Francis Bacon
Missus called out to Tomfry, said keep it down, a lady shouldn't know where her bacon comes from. When we heard that, I told Aunt-Sister, missus didn't know what end her bacon went in and what end it came out. Aunt-Sister slapped me into yesterday. ~ Sue Monk Kidd
Bacon quotes by Sue Monk Kidd
Knowledge hath in it somewhat of the serpent, and therefore where it entereth into a man it makes him swell. ~ Francis Bacon
Bacon quotes by Francis Bacon
It is only rather recently that science has begun to make peace with its magical roots. Until a few decades ago, it was common for histories of science either to commence decorously with Copernicus's heliocentric theory or to laud the rationalism of Aristotelian antiquity and then to leap across the Middle Ages as an age of ignorance and superstition. One could, with care and diligence, find occasional things to praise in the works of Avicenna, William of Ockham, Albertus Magnus, and Roger Bacon, but these sparse gems had to be thoroughly dusted down and scraped clean of unsightly accretions before being inserted into the corners of a frame fashioned in a much later period. ~ Philip Ball
Bacon quotes by Philip Ball
Certainly fame is like a river, that beareth up things light and swoln, and drowns things weighty and solid. ~ Francis Bacon
Bacon quotes by Francis Bacon
There are four great sciences, without which the other sciences cannot be known nor a knowledge of things secured ... Of these sciences the gate and key is mathematics ... He who is ignorant of this [mathematics] cannot know the other sciences nor the affairs of this world. ~ Roger Bacon
Bacon quotes by Roger Bacon
I like Francis Bacon best, because Francis Bacon has terrific problems, and he knows that he is not going to solve them, but he knows also that he can escape from day to day and stay alive, and he does that because his work gives him a kick. ~ Louise Bourgeois
Bacon quotes by Louise Bourgeois
But we are not dedicating or building any Capitol or Pyramid to human Pride, but found a holy temple in the human Intellect, on the model of the Universe ... For whatever is worthy of Existence is worthy of Knowledge-which is the Image (or Echo) of Existence. ~ Francis Bacon
Bacon quotes by Francis Bacon
I know you're on the Atkins diet, but could you stop eating bacon during sex? ~ David Letterman
Bacon quotes by David Letterman
While Mr Loveday aired my lady's sheets, I set to scratching up a supper. With not even time to change from my own damp clothes I had in one-half hour some welcoming tea steaming and hot brandy to mix a punch. Our bill of fare was the remnants of Mrs Garland's Yorkshire Pie, still sound and savory, fried bacon, and a hillock of roasted rabbits that disappeared as quickly as I made them. The last of the seed cake was eaten too, with a douse of brandy sprinkled over it to warm us.
'She will not eat those beggarly scraps,' said Jesmire, the spiteful old cat, when I took a tray of food to my lady's door. Yet I did see a slice of brandied cake disappear. I knew my mistress well enough by then, and she was a slave to her sugar tooth. ~ Martine Bailey
Bacon quotes by Martine Bailey
The matter of sedition is of two kinds: much poverty and much discontentment....The causes and motives of sedition are, innovation in religion; taxes; alteration of laws and customs; breaking of privileges; general oppression; advancement of unworthy persons, strangers; dearths; disbanded soldiers; factions grown desperate; and whatsoever in offending people joineth them in a common cause.' The cue of every leader, of course, is to divide his enemies and to unite his friends. 'Generally, the dividing and breaking of all factions...that are adverse to the state, and setting them at a distance, or at least distrust, among themselves, is not one of the worst remedies; for it is a desperate case, if those that hold with the proceeding of the state be full of discord and faction, and those that are against it be entire and united.' A better recipe for the avoidance of revolutions is an equitable distribution of wealth: 'Money is like muck, not good unless it be spread.' But this does not mean socialism, or even democracy; Bacon distrusts the people, who were in his day quite without access to education; 'the lowest of all flatteries is the flattery of the common people;' and 'Phocion took it right, who, being applauded by the multitude, asked, What had he done amiss?' What Bacon wants is first a yeomanry of owning farmers; then an aristocracy for administration; and above all a philosopher-king. 'It is almost without instance that any government was unprosperous under learned gove ~ Will Durant
Bacon quotes by Will Durant
Fame is very much a double-edged sword. ~ Kevin Bacon
Bacon quotes by Kevin Bacon
It is by discourse that men associate; and words are imposed according to the apprehension of the vulgar. And therefore the ill and unfit choice of words wonderfully obsesses the understanding. Nor do the definitions or explanations, wherewith in some things learned men are wont to guard and defend themselves, by any means set the matter right. But words plainly force and overrule the understanding, and throw all into confusion, and lead men away into innumerable and inane controversies and fancies. ~ Francis Bacon
Bacon quotes by Francis Bacon
Champagne for my real friends, real pain for my sham friends ~ Francis Bacon
Bacon quotes by Francis Bacon
Bacon always woke at the first light of day and worked for several hours, usually finishing around noon. ~ Mason Currey
Bacon quotes by Mason Currey
Time is the author of authors. ~ Francis Bacon
Bacon quotes by Francis Bacon
To seek to extinguish anger utterly is but a bravery of the Stoics. We have better oracles: 'Be angry, but sin not.' 'Let not the sun go down upon your wrath.' ~ Francis Bacon
Bacon quotes by Francis Bacon
Fortitude is the marshal of thought, the armor of the will, and the fort of reason. ~ Francis Bacon
Bacon quotes by Francis Bacon
More dangers have deceived men than forced them. ~ Francis Bacon
Bacon quotes by Francis Bacon
It is madness and a contradiction to expect that things which were never yet performed should be effected, except by means hitherto untried. ~ Francis Bacon
Bacon quotes by Francis Bacon
Wine appreciation is not a simple sum of its parts any more than poetry appreciation is an arithmetic notation of its similes, alliterations, or rhythmic
style. Most complex flavor perceptions are cerebral creations. They start from the detection of separate sensations, but it is their combined interactions
that generate odor memories. Only the unique combinations of multiple sensations generate the typical fragrance of an object, be it wine, coffee,
lilacs, or fried bacon. ~ Roland S. Jackson
Bacon quotes by Roland S. Jackson
Its a proven fact that all plans involving bacon have a ninety percent better chance of working out. ~ Jeff Gunhus
Bacon quotes by Jeff Gunhus
You don't need meat at every meal," Riley offered, forking another bite of salad into his mouth and inwardly agreeing with Jack that it was certainly lacking something. Jack was quiet for all of ten seconds, and then he couldn't hold in his opinion one second more. "Are you really a Texan? I mean, really? Riley, if I have a headache, I'd put bacon around an aspirin before I take it. ~ R.J. Scott
Bacon quotes by R.J. Scott
There is no secrecy comparable to celerity. ~ Francis Bacon
Bacon quotes by Francis Bacon
Wife and children are a kind of discipline of humanity. ~ Francis Bacon
Bacon quotes by Francis Bacon
if you heart is as big as your bacon you know it's true love ~ Lauren Hale
Bacon quotes by Lauren Hale
Bacon makes people happy. If you walked up to a stranger and said, "Bacon," they would probably respond with a smile or a "Yes, please! ~ Anonymous
Bacon quotes by Anonymous
One of my greatest pleasures there was enjoying the smell of bacon frying and coffee brewing and knowing that white folks were doing the preparing instead of me. I was 42 years old, and it was one of the few times in my life up to that point when I did not feel any hostility from white people. ~ Rosa Parks
Bacon quotes by Rosa Parks
Roger Bacon held that three classes of substance were capable of magic: the herbal, the mineral, and the verbal. With their leaves of fiber, their inks of copperas and soot, and their words, books are an amalgam of the three. ~ Matthew Battles
Bacon quotes by Matthew Battles
I'm not entirely sure what these are all for but I think the top one that looks like a stick figure is to notify people that you've found the Blair Witch, and I think the next one means "Poop won't go down. Use your foot." I assume the orange button on the far left is for starting a war, and then there are two for washing your boobs for some reason, and then one about levitating on a fountain, and I think the last one is for ordering bacon? Frankly, I was too afraid to try out all of the buttons because just sitting on it triggered something that made it break out into song. It was unsettling. Like, a pooping lullaby. ~ Jenny Lawson
Bacon quotes by Jenny Lawson
When you have bacon in your mouth, it doesn't matter who's president. ~ Louis C.K.
Bacon quotes by Louis C.K.
We plan, we toil, we suffer - in the hope of what? A camel-load of idol's eyes? The title deeds of Radio City? The empire of Asia? A trip to the moon? No, no, no, no. Simply to wake just in time to smell coffee and bacon and eggs. ~ J.B. Priestley
Bacon quotes by J.B. Priestley
The first question concerning the Celestial Bodies is whether there be a system, that is whether the world or universe compose together one globe, with a center, or whether the particular globes of earth and stars be scattered dispersedly, each on its own roots, without any system or common center. ~ Francis Bacon
Bacon quotes by Francis Bacon
Pictures and shapes are but secondary objects and please or displease only in the memory. ~ Francis Bacon
Bacon quotes by Francis Bacon
But the greatest error of all the rest is the mistaking or misplacing of the last or farthest end of knowledge: for men have entered into a desire of learning and knowledge, sometimes upon a natural curiosity and inquisitive appetite; sometimes to entertain their minds with variety and delight; sometimes for ornament and reputation; and sometimes to enable them to victory of wit and contradiction; and most times for lucre and profession; and seldom sincerely to give a true account of their gift of reason, to the benefit and use of men ... ~ Francis Bacon
Bacon quotes by Francis Bacon
The distinctive crimes of this generation are crimes of subtlety and finesse.
- ALEXANDER S. BACON 1908 ~ J.M. Carlisle
Bacon quotes by J.M. Carlisle
Painting today is pure intuition and luck and taking advantage of what happens when you splash the stuff down. ~ Francis Bacon
Bacon quotes by Francis Bacon
If you want to convey fact, this can only ever be done through a form of distortion. You must distort to transform what is called appearance into image. ~ Francis Bacon
Bacon quotes by Francis Bacon
Since custom is the principal magistrate of man's life, let men by all means endeavor to obtain good customs. ~ Francis Bacon
Bacon quotes by Francis Bacon
True Friends are the bacon bits
In the salad bowl of life. How true
I read that and straight away,
My thoughts turned to you
And especially today on your 60th
These special wishes I send
Have a really wonderful birthday
My special "bacon flavored" friend ~ John Walter Bratton
Bacon quotes by John Walter Bratton
Now I know what a piece of bacon feels like when it is suddenly picked out of the pan on a fork and put back on the shelf!"
"No you don't!" he heard Dori answering, "because the bacon knows that it will get back in the pan sooner or later; and it is to be hoped we shan't. Also eagles aren't forks! ~ J.R.R. Tolkien
Bacon quotes by J.R.R. Tolkien
He shoveled the bacon out on a plate and broke the eggs in the hot grease and they
jumped and fluttered their edges to brown lace and made clucking sounds. ~ John Steinbeck
Bacon quotes by John Steinbeck
It is a poore Center of a Mans Actions, Himselfe. ~ Francis Bacon
Bacon quotes by Francis Bacon
Breakfast is my favorite way to start off the day. This is usually what I order every morning on set: egg whites scrambled with broccoli and a side of well-done turkey bacon. Sometimes I add a bit of feta cheese. ~ Cassie Scerbo
Bacon quotes by Cassie Scerbo
Friendship redoubleth joys, and cutteth griefs in half. ~ Francis Bacon
Bacon quotes by Francis Bacon
My wife is a terrific Southern cook. My favorite of all the great things she cooks is 'trash potatoes.' That's mashed potatoes with sour cream, bacon, cheddar cheese, and horseradish. It's a total gut bomb. ~ Mike Vogel
Bacon quotes by Mike Vogel
If any human being earnestly desire to push on to new discoveries instead of just retaining and using the old; to win victories over Nature as a worker rather than over hostile critics as a disputant; to attain, in fact, clear and demonstrative knowlegde instead of attractive and probable theory; we invite him as a true son of Science to join our ranks. ~ Francis Bacon
Bacon quotes by Francis Bacon
He of whom many are afraid ought to fear many. ~ Francis Bacon
Bacon quotes by Francis Bacon
No worries, Atticus. I will snarf surreptitiously. And I should get bacon, because my adverb was two syllables longer than yours, plus a bonus for alliteration."
I grinned. "It's a deal. You're the best hound ever. ~ Kevin Hearne
Bacon quotes by Kevin Hearne
Want and need were words that got eaten smaller and smaller: Freedom, autonomy, a perennial bank balance, a stainless-steel condo in a dustless city, a silky black car, to make out with Blue, eight hours of sleep, a cell phone, a bed, to kiss Blue just once, a blister-less heel, bacon for breakfast, to hold Blue's hand, one hour of sleep, toilet paper, deodorant, a soda, a minute to close his eyes.
What do you want, Adam?
To feel awake when my eyes are open. ~ Maggie Stiefvater
Bacon quotes by Maggie Stiefvater
Medicine is a science which hath been (as we have said) more professed than laboured, and yet more laboured than advanced: the labour having been, in my judgment, rather in circle than in progression. For I find much iteration, but small addition. It considereth causes of diseases, with the occasions or impulsions; the diseases themselves, with the accidents; and the cures, with the preservation. ~ Francis Bacon
Bacon quotes by Francis Bacon
Without friends the world is but a wilderness. ~ Francis Bacon
Bacon quotes by Francis Bacon
Francis Bacon is one of my giant inspirations. I just love him to pieces. ~ David Lynch
Bacon quotes by David Lynch
It is nothing won to admit men with an open door, and to receive them with a shut and reserved countenance. ~ Francis Bacon
Bacon quotes by Francis Bacon
For friends ... do but look upon good Books: they are true friends, that will neither flatter nor dissemble. ~ Francis Bacon
Bacon quotes by Francis Bacon
Doctor Johnson said, that in sickness there were three things that were material; the physician, the disease, and the patient: and if any two of these joined, then they get the victory; for, Ne Hercules quidem contra duos [Not even Hercules himself is a match for two]. If the physician and the patient join, then down goes the disease; for then the patient recovers: if the physician and the disease join, that is a strong disease; and the physician mistaking the cure, then down goes the patient: if the patient and the disease join, then down goes the physician; for he is discredited. ~ Francis Bacon
Bacon quotes by Francis Bacon
Bacon. Eggs. Toast. The same things Angie had made for her the past two years. Every day. Without fail. ~ E.E. Isherwood
