Perhaps the most impressive illustration of all is to suppose that you could label the molecules in a tumbler of water ... threw it anywhere you please on the earth, and went away from the earth for a few million years while all the water on the earth, the oceans, rivers, lakes and clouds had had time to mix up perfectly. Now supposing that perfect mixing had taken place, you come back to earth and draw a similar tumbler of water from the nearest tap, how many of those marked molecules would you expect to find in it? Well, the answer is 2000. There are 2000 times more molecules in a tumbler of water than there are tumblers of water in the whole earth. ~ Francis William Aston
Domagk Nobel quotes by Francis William Aston
As I noted in my Nobel lecture, an early insight in my work on the economics of information concerned the problem of appropriability - the difficulty that those who pay for information have in getting returns. ~ Joseph Stiglitz
Domagk Nobel quotes by Joseph Stiglitz
Nature creates curved lines while humans create straight lines. ~ Hideki Yukawa
Domagk Nobel quotes by Hideki Yukawa
Forget about Nobel prizes; they aren't really very important. ~ Herbert Simon
Domagk Nobel quotes by Herbert Simon
Now I know what the atom looks like. ~ Ernest Rutherford
Domagk Nobel quotes by Ernest Rutherford
The fact that Science walks forward on two feet, namely theory and experiment, is nowhere better illustrated than in the two fields for slight contributions to which you have done me the great honour of awarding the the Nobel Prize in Physics for the year 1923. Sometimes it is one foot that is put forward first, sometimes the other, but continuous progress is only made by the use of both - by theorizing and then testing, or by finding new relations in the process of experimenting and then bringing the theoretical foot up and pushing it on beyond, and so on in unending alterations. ~ Robert Andrews Millikan
Domagk Nobel quotes by Robert Andrews Millikan
I am thankful to the Nobel committee for recognising the plight of millions of children who are suffering in this modern age. ~ Kailash Satyarthi
Domagk Nobel quotes by Kailash Satyarthi
Yasunari Kawabata, the Japanese Nobel Prize winner for literature in 1968, committed suicide in 1971. Two years earlier, in 1969, another great Japanese novelist, Yukio Mishima, ended his life in the same way. Since 1895 ,thirteen Japanese novelists and writers have committed suicide, including the author of the Rashomon, Ryunosuko Akutagawa, in 1927. That "continuous tragedy" of Japanese culture during 70 years coincides with the penetration of Western civilization and materialistic ideas into the traditional culture of Japan. Whatever it be, for the poets and the writers of tragedies, civilization will always have an inhuman face and be a threat to humanity. A year before his death, Kawabata wrote "men are separated from each other by a concrete wall that obstructs any circulation of love. Nature is smothered in the name of progress." In the novel The Snow Country, published in 1937 , Kawabata places man's loneliness and alienation in the modern world at the very focus of his reflections. ~ Alija Izetbegovic
Domagk Nobel quotes by Alija Izetbegovic
In Snow Country, Yasunari Kawabata, the first of Japan's two Nobel laureates, describes the sad and sorry love affair of a geisha from the country and an intellectual from the city. It's ~ Nancy Pearl
Domagk Nobel quotes by Nancy Pearl
It is my express wish that in awarding the prizes no consideration be given to the nationality of the candidates, but that the most worthy shall receive the prize, whether he be Scandinavian or not. ~ Alfred Nobel
Domagk Nobel quotes by Alfred Nobel
As an American I am not so shocked that Obama was given the Nobel Peace Prize without any accomplishments to his name, America gave him the White House based on the same credentials. ~ Newt Gingrich
Domagk Nobel quotes by Newt Gingrich
Nature is man's teacher. She unfolds her treasures to his search, unseals his eye, illumes his mind, and purifies his heart; an influence breathes from all the sights and sounds of her existence. ~ Alfred Nobel
Domagk Nobel quotes by Alfred Nobel
If I have a thousand ideas and only one turns out to be good, I am satisfied ~ Alfred Nobel
Domagk Nobel quotes by Alfred Nobel
I learned what research was all about as a research student [with] Stoppani ... Max Perutz, and ... Fred Sanger ... From them, I always received an unspoken message which in my imagination I translated as 'Do good experiments, and don't worry about the rest. ~ Cesar Milstein
Domagk Nobel quotes by Cesar Milstein
I think the Nobel Prize helps for a number of reasons. Number one, if I can be frank, there is these people will feel by getting a Nobel Prize that I'm one of them, that it is possible to contribute on the world map of science and technology. And the other thing also which I'm hoping for is that the government in Egypt is willing and interested in promoting science and technology and this is an ideal time now to be able to do something. ~ Ahmed H. Zewail
Domagk Nobel quotes by Ahmed H. Zewail
The generalized theory of relativity has furnished still more remarkable results. This considers not only uniform but also accelerated motion. In particular, it is based on the impossibility of distinguishing an acceleration from the gravitation or other force which produces it. Three consequences of the theory may be mentioned of which two have been confirmed while the third is still on trial: (1) It gives a correct explanation of the residual motion of forty-three seconds of arc per century of the perihelion of Mercury. (2) It predicts the deviation which a ray of light from a star should experience on passing near a large gravitating body, the sun, namely, 1".7. On Newton's corpuscular theory this should be only half as great. As a result of the measurements of the photographs of the eclipse of 1921 the number found was much nearer to the prediction of Einstein, and was inversely proportional to the distance from the center of the sun, in further confirmation of the theory. (3) The theory predicts a displacement of the solar spectral lines, and it seems that this prediction is also verified. ~ Albert Abraham Michelson
Domagk Nobel quotes by Albert Abraham Michelson
Looking through the list of earlier Nobel laureates, I note a large number with whom I became acquainted and with whom I interacted during those years as they passed through Cambridge. ~ John Pople
Domagk Nobel quotes by John Pople
Science today is a highly collaborative exercise, and to convert it into a contest, as the Nobel does, is a bad way to look at science. ~ Venkatraman Ramakrishnan
Domagk Nobel quotes by Venkatraman Ramakrishnan
Luz Castro "And then i explain that the world did know and remained silent. and that is why I swore never to be silent whenever and wherever human beings endure suffering and humiliation. We must take sides. NEUTRALITY HELPS THE OPPRESSOR, NEVER THE VICTIM. SILENCE ENCOURAGES THE TORMENTOR, NEVER THE TORMENTED. Sometimes we must interfere. When human lives are endangered, when human dignity is in jeopardy, national borders and sensitivities become irrelevant. Wherever men and women persecuted because of their race, religion, or political views, that place must- at that moment- become the center of the universe." Elie Wiesel (from his speech when given the Nobel Peace Prize.) ~ Elie Wiesel
Domagk Nobel quotes by Elie Wiesel
Some recent work by E. Fermi and L. Szilárd, which has been communicated to me in manuscript, leads me to expect that the element uranium may be turned into a new and important source of energy in the immediate future. Certain aspects of the situation seem to call for watchfulness and, if necessary, quick action on the part of the Administration. ...

This new phenomenon would also lead to the construction of bombs, and it is conceivable - though much less certain - that extremely powerful bombs of a new type may thus be constructed. A single bomb of this type, carried by boat or exploded in a port, might well destroy the whole port altogether with some of the surrounding territory. However, such bombs might well prove to be too heavy for transportation by air. ~ Albert Einstein
Domagk Nobel quotes by Albert Einstein
Peace is the music of every soul. Our glory lies in understanding, listening and honoring that music ~ Amit Ray
Domagk Nobel quotes by Amit Ray
There is only one positive role of the Nobel prize
it creates some common way to understand a writer. I cannot say, that I like this situation, but that's the way it goes. The books are being born and then walk around the world, just as children do. ~ Stanislaw Lem
Domagk Nobel quotes by Stanislaw Lem
In microbiology the roles of mutation and selection in evolution are coming to be better understood through the use of bacterial cultures of mutant strains. ~ Edward Tatum
Domagk Nobel quotes by Edward Tatum
Fortunately, nature is as generous with its problems as Nobel with his fortune. The more we know, the more aware we are of what we know not. ~ David Gross
Domagk Nobel quotes by David Gross
I once interviewed Robert Solow, winner of the 1987 Nobel Prize in Economics and a noted baseball enthusiast. I asked if it bothered him that he received less money for winning the Nobel Prize than Roger Clemens, who was pitching for the Red Sox at the time, earned in a single season. "No," Solow said. "There are a lot of good economists, but there is only one Roger Clemens." That is how economists think. ~ Charles Wheelan
Domagk Nobel quotes by Charles Wheelan
The years since the Nobel Prize have been productive ones for me. ~ Philip Warren Anderson
Domagk Nobel quotes by Philip Warren Anderson
I want a trophy wife. I'll keep her on the shelf next to my future Nobel peace prize. (I plan on inventing a gun that shoots love, not bullets.) ~ Jarod Kintz
Domagk Nobel quotes by Jarod Kintz
The role of the United Nations is to set the mental clocks of the world leaders from past problems to the present opportunities and from local power mindset to global welfare mindset. ~ Amit Ray
Domagk Nobel quotes by Amit Ray
When I received the news of the Nobel Peace Award, I could not believe it. I told my father, 'I think they have the wrong name, Dad. Please, can you talk to this man on the phone? I'm busy cooking!' ~ Betty Williams
Domagk Nobel quotes by Betty Williams
[Concerning] phosphorescent bodies, and in particular to uranium salts whose phosphorescence has a very brief duration. With the double sulfate of uranium and potassium ... I was able to perform the following experiment: One wraps a Lumière photographic plate with a bromide emulsion in two sheets of very thick black paper, such that the plate does not become clouded upon being exposed to the sun for a day. One places on the sheet of paper, on the outside, a slab of the phosphorescent substance, and one exposes the whole to the sun for several hours. When one then develops the photographic plate, one recognizes that the silhouette of the phosphorescent substance appears in black on the negative. If one places between the phosphorescent substance and the paper a piece of money or a metal screen pierced with a cut-out design, one sees the image of these objects appear on the negative. One can repeat the same experiments placing a thin pane of glass between the phosphorescent substance and the paper, which excludes the possibility of chemical action due to vapors which might emanate from the substance when heated by the sun's rays. One must conclude from these experiments that the phosphorescent substance in question emits rays which pass through the opaque paper and reduces silver salts.

[Although the sun is irrelevant, and he misinterprets the role of phosphorescence, he has discovered the effect of radioactivity.] ~ Henri Becquerel
Domagk Nobel quotes by Henri Becquerel
I studied calculus for the first time, which to me was an amazingly empowering experience which I could really see how you could understand all sorts of things, and I decided that chemistry and biology just had too much memory for me to be interested. Physics was very easy. ~ Marshall Nicholas Rosenbluth
Domagk Nobel quotes by Marshall Nicholas Rosenbluth
I was working with a Crookes tube covered by a shield of black cardboard. A piece of barium platino-cyanide paper lay on the bench there. I had been passing a current through the tube, and I noticed a peculiar black line across the paper ...
The effect was one which could only be produced in ordinary parlance by the passage of light. No light could come from the tube because the shield which covered it was impervious to any light known even that of the electric arc ...
I did not think I investigated ...
I assumed that the effect must have come from the tube since its character indicated that it could come from nowhere else ... It seemed at first a new kind of invisible light. It was clearly something new something unrecorded ...
There is much to do, and I am busy, very busy.
[Describing to a journalist the discovery of X-rays that he had made on 8 Nov 1895.] ~ Wilhelm Conrad Rontgen
Domagk Nobel quotes by Wilhelm Conrad Rontgen
It's not only possible, but likely that the Nobel Prize in economics will go in alternate years to people who disagree on nearly everything fundamental. ~ Jerry Pournelle
Domagk Nobel quotes by Jerry Pournelle
There has been evidence throughout history of cycles when the earth gets warmer and cycles when the earth gets colder. We should always be wise stewards of the earth and all of our natural resources. But as a policymaker, I won't be guided by the global warming propaganda machine. Al Gore - we need you to return your Nobel Peace Prize! ~ Raul Labrador
Domagk Nobel quotes by Raul Labrador
Nobel Prize in Literature [10w]
Only fools and Swedes equate literary prizes with literary merit. ~ Beryl Dov
Domagk Nobel quotes by Beryl Dov
I did not know that I can win the Nobel Prize. ~ Tim Hunt
Domagk Nobel quotes by Tim Hunt
Second to agriculture, humbug is the biggest industry of our age. ~ Alfred Nobel
Domagk Nobel quotes by Alfred Nobel
... in daily speech, where we don't stop to consider every word, we all use phrases like "the ordinary world," "ordinary life," "the ordinary course of events" ... But in the language of poetry, where every word is weighed, nothing is usual or normal. Not a single stone and not a single cloud above it. Not a single day and not a single night after it. And above all, not a single existence, not anyone's existence in this world. ~ Wisława Szymborska
Domagk Nobel quotes by Wisława Szymborska
When we discover the secrets behind the cryptograph that is the human gene, we will not only decode the mystery of life, but also unlock the secrets of God. ~ Ceral Sinclaire Nobel Laureate Geneticist
Domagk Nobel quotes by Ceral Sinclaire Nobel Laureate Geneticist
Let it never be said by future generations that indifference, cynicism or selfishness made us fail to live up to the ideals of humanism which the Nobel Peace Prize encapsulates. Let the strivings of us all, prove Martin Luther King Jr. to have been correct, when he said that humanity can no longer be tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war. ~ Nelson Mandela
Domagk Nobel quotes by Nelson Mandela
Destiny

The chicken I bought last night,
Frozen,
Returned to life,
Laid the biggest egg in the world,
And was awarded the Nobel Prize.

The phenomenal egg
Was passed from hand to hand,
In a few weeks had gone all round the earth,
And round the sun
In 365 days.

The hen received who knows how much hard currency,
Assessed in buckets of grain
Which she couldn't manage to eat

Because she was invited everywhere,
Gave lectures, granted interviews,
Was photographed.

Very often reporters insisted
That I too should pose
Beside her.
And so, having served art
Throughout my life,
All of a sudden I've attained to fame
As a poultry breeder. ~ Marin Sorescu
Domagk Nobel quotes by Marin Sorescu
Destiny guides our fortunes more favorably than we could have expected. Look there, Sancho Panza, my friend, and see those thirty or so wild giants, with whom I intend to do battle and kill each and all of them, so with their stolen booty we can begin to enrich ourselves. This is nobel, righteous warfare, for it is wonderfully useful to God to have such an evil race wiped from the face of the earth."
"What giants?" Asked Sancho Panza.
"The ones you can see over there," answered his master, "with the huge arms, some of which are very nearly two leagues long."
"Now look, your grace," said Sancho, "what you see over there aren't giants, but windmills, and what seems to be arms are just their sails, that go around in the wind and turn the millstone."
"Obviously," replied Don Quijote, "you don't know much about adventures. ~ Miguel De Cervantes Saavedra
Domagk Nobel quotes by Miguel De Cervantes Saavedra
Nobel Prize money is a life-belt thrown to a swimmer who has already reached the shore in safety. ~ George Bernard Shaw
Domagk Nobel quotes by George Bernard Shaw
When asked what characteristics Nobel prize winning physicists had in common ؛ I cannot think of a single one, not even intelligence ~ Enrico Fermi
Domagk Nobel quotes by Enrico Fermi
A Nobel Prize winner was asked how he became a scientist. He said that every day after school, his mother would ask him not what he learned but whether he asked a good question today. That, he said, was how he became a scientist. ~ Thomas L. Friedman
Domagk Nobel quotes by Thomas L. Friedman
I thought maybe I would become a god, or a goddess, or a president or a Nobel Prize winner. ~ Amelie Nothomb
Domagk Nobel quotes by Amelie Nothomb
I do feel quite strongly about this that probably one of the things that unfortunately this age now to get a Nobel Prize is to really use part of it to help the young people get excited about science. ~ Ahmed H. Zewail
