Great breakthroughs are always followed by great catastrophes. ~ Rosalia De Castro
De Castro quotes by Rosalia De Castro
Haven't you noticed that men struggle every day to correct the defects of my work? What is a plane or a diving suit but an emendation to my work? Even those who worship me spend their lives disagreeing with me and trying to improve on what I made. When they implore me for help with their misfortunes, deep down, are they not in fact censuring me, because what is a prayer but a rebellion that cannot be expressed?' He smiled vaguely and added: 'The only reason they don't curse me is because they still believe I'm stronger than they are ~ José Ferreira Borges De Castro
De Castro quotes by José Ferreira Borges De Castro
Pedro of Portugal's rapt and bizarre declaration of love, in 1356, for the embalmed corpse of his murdered wife, Inez de Castro, who swayed beside him on his travels, leather-brown and skeletal, crowned with lace and gold circlet, hung about with chains of diamonds and pearls, her bone-fingers fantastically ringed. ~ A.S. Byatt
De Castro quotes by A.S. Byatt
All times are beautiful for those who maintain joy within them; but there is no happy or favorable time for those with disconsolate or orphaned souls. ~ Rosalia De Castro
De Castro quotes by Rosalia De Castro
Happiness, I do not know where to turn to discover you on earth, in the air or the sky; yet I know you exist and are no futile dream. ~ Rosalia De Castro
De Castro quotes by Rosalia De Castro

De Castro quotes by Antoine De Saint Exupery
Since the masses are always eager to believe something, for their benefit nothing is so easy to arrange as facts. ~ Charles Maurice De Talleyrand
De Castro quotes by Charles Maurice De Talleyrand
She wanders on like a poplar leaf borne upon a whirlwind of unconscious associations, she, her youth, her illusions and her former happiness remembered now through the mists of a ruined mind. ~ Comte De Lautreamont
De Castro quotes by Comte De Lautreamont
What is different in capitalist civilization has been two things. First, the process of meritocracy has been proclaimed as an official virtue instead of being merely a de facto reality. The culture has been different. And secondly, the percentage of the world's population for whom such ascent was possible has gone up. But even though it has grown up, meritocratic ascent remains very much the attribute of a minority. ~ Immanuel Wallerstein
De Castro quotes by Immanuel Wallerstein
I shall ask for the abolition for the punishment of death until I have the infallibility of human judgment demonstrated to me. ~ Marquis De Lafayette
De Castro quotes by Marquis De Lafayette
It's something that people relate to - and I hope my kid doesn't relate to - but there's a level of believability in playing complex characters. You know, Christopher Walken has done some hilarious comedies, De Niro. There's great room for complexity and darkness to do well in comedies. ~ Jeremy Sisto
De Castro quotes by Jeremy Sisto
Who feareth to suffer suffereth already, because he feareth. ~ Michel De Montaigne
De Castro quotes by Michel De Montaigne
Praise is always pleasing, let it come from whom, or upon what account it will. ~ Michel De Montaigne
De Castro quotes by Michel De Montaigne
Let us keep the discoveries and indisputable measurements of physics. But ... A more complete study of the movements of the world will oblige us, little by little, to turn it upside down; in other words, to discover that if things hold and hold together, it is only by reason of complexity, from above. ~ Pierre Teilhard De Chardin
De Castro quotes by Pierre Teilhard De Chardin
I shoot a lot of film - that's one of the things I try to do, and it's one of the things I learned how to do with Robert De Niro on 'Men of Honor.' ~ George Tillman, Jr.
De Castro quotes by George Tillman, Jr.
What a queer planet!" he thought. "It is altogether dry, and altogether pointed, and altogether harsh and forbidding. And the people have no imagination. They repeat whatever one says to them ... On my planet I had a flower; she always was the first to speak ... ~ Antoine De Saint Exupery
De Castro quotes by Antoine De Saint Exupery
I take the world to be but as a stage,Where net-maskt men do play their personage. ~ Guillaume De Salluste Du Bartas
De Castro quotes by Guillaume De Salluste Du Bartas
Ask him about the cemeteries, Dean!"
In 1966 upon being told that President Charles DeGaulle had taken France out of NATO and that all U.S. troops must be evacuated off of French soil President Lyndon Johnson mentioned to Secretary of State Dean Rusk that he should ask DeGaulle about the Americans buried in France. Dean implied in his answer that that DeGaulle should not really be asked that in the meeting at which point President Johnson then told Secretary of State Dean Rusk:
"Ask him about the cemeteries Dean!"
That made it into a Presidential Order so he had to ask President DeGaulle.
So at end of the meeting Dean did ask DeGaulle if his order to remove all U.S. troops from French soil also included the 60,000+ soldiers buried in France from World War I and World War II.
DeGaulle, embarrassed, got up and left and never answered. ~ Lyndon B. Johnson
De Castro quotes by Lyndon B. Johnson
The older a fool is, the worse he is. ~ Francois De La Rochefoucauld
De Castro quotes by Francois De La Rochefoucauld
He who must travel happily must travel light. ~ Antoine De Saint Exupery
De Castro quotes by Antoine De Saint Exupery
The natural heat, say the good-fellows,
first seats itself in the feet: that concerns infancy; thence it mounts into the middle
region, where it makes a long abode and produces, in my opinion, the sole true pleasures of human life; all other pleasures in comparison sleep; towards the end, like a vapor that still mounts upward, it arrives at the throat, where it makes its final residence, and concludes the progress. ~ Michel De Montaigne
De Castro quotes by Michel De Montaigne
An awareness of illness doesn't mean you're well, ~ Anders De La Motte
De Castro quotes by Anders De La Motte
In Paris every man must have had a love affair. What woman wants something that no other woman ever wanted. ~ Honore De Balzac
De Castro quotes by Honore De Balzac
The dead dog had come more than a hundred miles to find its master.
[Mademoiselle Cocotte] ~ Guy De Maupassant
De Castro quotes by Guy De Maupassant
Witch. A goddess. Someone not of this earth but not apart from it either. A woman to be loved and feared and adored. ~ Melissa De La Cruz
De Castro quotes by Melissa De La Cruz
Philosophers have very justly remarked that the only solid instruction is that which the pupil brings from his own depths; that the true instruction is not that which transmits notions wholly formed, but that which renders him capable of forming for himself good opinions. That which they have said in regard to the intellectual faculties applies equally to the moral faculties. There is for the soul a spontaneous culture, on which depends all the real progress in perfection. ~ Joseph Marie, Baron De Gerando
De Castro quotes by Joseph Marie, Baron De Gerando
Work is most fulfilling when you're at the comfortable, exciting edge of not quite knowing what you are doing. ~ Alain De Botton
De Castro quotes by Alain De Botton
I have vanquished giants, and I have sent villains and malefactors to her, but where can they find her if she has been enchanted and transformed into the ugliest peasant girl anyone can imagine? ~ Miguel De Cervantes Saavedra
De Castro quotes by Miguel De Cervantes Saavedra
AB de Villers is the most complete player of the Modern Era ~ V. V. S. Laxman
De Castro quotes by V. V. S. Laxman
The sight made her ache. How can I not touch you? she thought hopelessly, and then she was doing it, her fingers on his wrist. He didn't jump or even look at her, just stopped writing. Neither one of them moved, nothing moved, and the whole thing lasted three or four seconds at most, but when Pen took her hand away and started to breathe again, her chest hurt, as though she had been holding her breath for a very long time. ~ Marisa De Los Santos
De Castro quotes by Marisa De Los Santos
The arrows of love, like Achilles' sword, carry with them the remedy for the wounds they cause. ~ Pierre-Ambroise Choderlos De Laclos

That no matter what happens, loving someone to the best of your ability is the right thing to do. It's the only thing to do. ~ Marisa De Los Santos
De Castro quotes by Marisa De Los Santos
Those who have no principles are never more dangerous than when they reach the age when they lose all sense of shame. Their hearts are gangrened by depravity, they refine and polish up their first offences and convert them into heinous crimes while still believing they are still at the stage of minor misdemeanours. ~ Marquis De Sade
De Castro quotes by Marquis De Sade
Creativity and lateral thinking have exactly the same basis as humour. ~ Edward De Bono
De Castro quotes by Edward De Bono
To compensate a little for the treachery and weakness of my memory, so extreme that it has happened to me more than once to pick up again ... books which I have read carefully a few years before. I have adopted the habit for some time now of adding at the end of each book the time I finished reading it and the judgment I have derived of it as a whole, so that this may represent to me at least the sense and general idea I had conceived of the author in reading it. ~ Michel De Montaigne
De Castro quotes by Michel De Montaigne
This time when we kissed, he didn't pull away, and I was close enough to his mouth for him to whisper what the tiny old vaquero had said a long time ago, the part of being of two worlds. "Tu eres de dos mundos." I closed both of my eyes, the blue one and the brown one, so I could be in just one world, his... ~ Laura McNeal
De Castro quotes by Laura McNeal
An imbecile is never bored: he contemplates himself. ~ Remy De Gourmont
De Castro quotes by Remy De Gourmont
If, for example, I had just as much love as you had virtue (and that is surely saying a lot) it is not astonishing that one should end at the same time as the other. It is not my fault. ~ Pierre-Ambroise Choderlos De Laclos
De Castro quotes by Pierre-Ambroise Choderlos De Laclos
But I'll take you, Don Clown stuffed with garlic," said Don Quixote, "and tie you to a tree as naked as when your mother brought you forth, and give you, not to say three thousand three hundred, but six thousand six hundred lashes, and so well laid on that they won't be got rid of if you try three thousand three hundred times; don't answer me a word or I'll tear your soul out. ~ Miguel De Cervantes Saavedra
De Castro quotes by Miguel De Cervantes Saavedra
Our wisdom and deliberation for the most part follow the lead of chance. ~ Michel De Montaigne
De Castro quotes by Michel De Montaigne
The abuse of the veto power has become so predictable that frequently resolutions are not even tabled because of the certainty of a veto against their adoption. Necessary discussion is thereby suppressed.
