Van Gogh would've sold more than one painting if he'd put tigers in them. ~ Bill Watterson
Commercial Viability Of Art quotes by Bill Watterson
there is no name for what he's looking for, which, typically, is a technology, or an idea, on the cusp of commercial viability. The new new thing. ~ Michael Lewis
Commercial Viability Of Art quotes by Michael Lewis
We live in oppressive times. We have, as a nation, become our own thought police; but instead of calling the process by which we limit our expression of dissent and wonder 'censorship,' we call it 'concern for commercial viability. ~ David Mamet
Commercial Viability Of Art quotes by David Mamet
I moved on to the University of California, Berkley, coordinating interpreters for Deaf students at the university. The first year I was at Berkley, we brought in artists, performers, actors, and poets to create a Deaf arts festival. I did a lot of the interpreting for the stage performers. By the second year, I realized that I really liked producing arts festivals that had to do something with signing. ~ Jack Jason
Commercial Viability Of Art quotes by Jack Jason
War is not at all such a difficult art as people think ... In reality it would seem that he is vanquished who is afraid of his adversary and the the whole secret lies in that. ~ Napoleon Bonaparte
Commercial Viability Of Art quotes by Napoleon Bonaparte
Creativity is not passive, I don't see the creation of art as passive. ~ James Kelman
Commercial Viability Of Art quotes by James Kelman
I lived right on the borderline of a black neighborhood. So I could go into the black area and then there'd be these ghetto theaters that you could actually see the new kung fu movie or the new blaxploitation movie or the new horror film or whatever. And then there was also, if you went just a little further away, there was actually a little art house cinema. So I could actually see, you know, French movies or Italian movies, when they came out. ~ Quentin Tarantino
Commercial Viability Of Art quotes by Quentin Tarantino
Art is the refreshing source of existence. ~ Kristian Goldmund Aumann
Commercial Viability Of Art quotes by Kristian Goldmund Aumann
I don't get into 'becauses.' When you come into a studio you see a number of works. My habit is to go to the one I like most. If you start to say, 'because,' you get into art jargon. ~ Clement Greenberg
Commercial Viability Of Art quotes by Clement Greenberg
Everything comes from a weird place that I don't understand. I make a piece of art just to prove that I exist in my own way. And I can't make something nice. I have to make something that makes me uncomfortable. ~ Josh Smith
Commercial Viability Of Art quotes by Josh Smith
If it be knowledge or wisdom one is seeking, then one had better go direct to the source. And the source is not the scholar or philosopher, not the master, saint, or teacher, but life itself - direct experience of life. The same is true for art. Here, too, we an dispense with the masters. ~ Henry Miller
Commercial Viability Of Art quotes by Henry Miller
The biggest mistake that parents make, is believing that their assigned task in life is to teach their children and to guide them in every situation of their children's lives. The truth is that it is the task of parents to both learn from their children and to guide them as well. Parenting is a relationship that goes both ways, from the moment your child is born, you learn from that person, and in fact, your lessons begin long before your child's lessons do. Later on, when you've learned a great deal already, then they begin to learn from you. Throughout our lives, it is a give-and-take relationship, in many ways. Our assigned task is to learn from our children, and to guide and teach them. Their assigned task is to learn from us, and also to teach us. ~ C. JoyBell C.
Commercial Viability Of Art quotes by C. JoyBell C.
I never thought of what I was doing as a way to sell the NFL. I was making movies about a sport that I loved, about players and coaches that I respected. I wanted to convey my love of the game through film. And most artists convey their love through art. And my art and my love was expressed through film. ~ Steve Sabol
Commercial Viability Of Art quotes by Steve Sabol
Jiu Jitsu uses us to express itself, and the best thing we can do to is to become a vehicle capable of expressing Jiu Jitsu with all of its perfection minus our imperfections. ~ Chris Matakas
Commercial Viability Of Art quotes by Chris Matakas
I felt in my bones; first, that this world does not explain itself. It may be a miracle with a supernatural explanation; it may be a conjuring trick, with a natural explanation. But the explanation of the conjuring trick, if it is to satisfy me, will have to be better than the natural explanations I have heard. The thing is magic, true or false. Second, I came to feel as if magic must have a meaning, and meaning must have some one to mean it. There was something personal in the world, as in a work of art; whatever it meant it meant violently. Third, I thought this
purpose beautiful in its old design, in spite of its defects, such as dragons. ~ G.K. Chesterton
Commercial Viability Of Art quotes by G.K. Chesterton
Art is born of humiliation. ~ W. H. Auden
Commercial Viability Of Art quotes by W. H. Auden
Orpheus with his lute made trees, And the mountain tops that freeze, Bow themselves, when he did sing; To his music, plants and flowers Ever sprung; as sun and showers There had made a lasting spring. Every thing that heard him play, Even the billows of the sea, Hung their heads, and then lay by. In sweet music is such art, Killing care and grief of heart Fall asleep, or hearing, die. ~ William Shakespeare
Commercial Viability Of Art quotes by William Shakespeare
Fantasy is escapist, and that is its glory. If a soldier is imprisioned by the enemy, don't we consider it his duty to escape? ... If we value the freedom of mind and soul, if we're partisans of liberty, then it's our plain duty to escape, and to take as many people with us as we can! ~ J.R.R. Tolkien
Commercial Viability Of Art quotes by J.R.R. Tolkien
It is only the untalented director who imagines him or herself in every part, wants his or her own thoughts and emotions portrayed; it is only the untalented who make their own limitations those of the actors as well. ~ Liv Ullmann
Commercial Viability Of Art quotes by Liv Ullmann
Let not thy peace depend on the tongues of men; for whether they judge well of thee or ill, thou art not on that account other than thyself. Where are true peace and true glory? Are they not in God? And he that careth not to please men, nor feareth to displease them, shall enjoy much peace. ~ Charles Haddon Spurgeon
Commercial Viability Of Art quotes by Charles Haddon Spurgeon
In his very rejection of art Walt Whitman is an artist. He tried to produce a certain effect by certain means and he succeeded ... He stands apart, and the chief value of his work is in its prophecy, not in its performance. He has begun a prelude to larger themes. He is the herald to a new era. As a man he is the precursor of a fresh type. He is a factor in the heroic and spiritual evolution of the human being. If Poetry has passed him by, Philosophy will take note of him. ~ Oscar Wilde
Commercial Viability Of Art quotes by Oscar Wilde
Art is one of the few ways we have of dealing with things that frighten or anger us. ~ Eric Drooker
Commercial Viability Of Art quotes by Eric Drooker
It is not from choice that my life is music and nothing more, but when one is an artist what else can he be? When a whole lifetime is too short to attain the heights he wants to reach, how then can he devote any of the little time he has to things outside of his art? ~ Ignacy Jan Paderewski
Commercial Viability Of Art quotes by Ignacy Jan Paderewski
Appreciation of works of art requires organized effort and systematic study. Art appreciation can no more be absorbed by aimless wandering in galleries than can surgery be learned by casual visits to a hospital. ~ Albert C. Barnes
Commercial Viability Of Art quotes by Albert C. Barnes
Art is, for me, the process of trying to wake up the soul. Because we live in an industrialized, fast-paced world that prefers that the soul remain asleep. ~ Bill Viola
Commercial Viability Of Art quotes by Bill Viola
A work of art is not a matter of thinking beautiful thoughts or experiencing tender emotions , but of intelligence, skill, taste, proportion, knowledge, discipline and industry; especially discipline. ~ Evelyn Waugh
Commercial Viability Of Art quotes by Evelyn Waugh
Tragedy is the greatest art form of all. It gives us the courage to continue with our life by exposing us to the pain of life. It is unsentimental, it takes us seriously as human beings, it is not condescending. Paradoxically, by seeing pain we are made greater, it becomes a need. ~ Howard Barker
Commercial Viability Of Art quotes by Howard Barker
Insomnia

I wonder
If those talks matter
Few done in the clarity of day
Or the many
Done at 3 a.m. in the morning ~ Irum Zahra
Commercial Viability Of Art quotes by Irum Zahra
Political consultants are pugilists, masters in the dark art of negativity. Which is why it's surprising to hear Democrats such as Steve McMahon and Republicans like Rich Galen urging their presidential candidates to be more, well, positive. ~ Ron Fournier
Commercial Viability Of Art quotes by Ron Fournier
If, while I'm painting, I distort or destroy a motif, it is not a planned or conscious act, but rather it has a different justification: I see the motif, the way I painted it, is somehow ugly or unbearable. Then I try to follow my feelings and make it attractive. And that means a process of painting, changing or destroying - for however long it takes - until I think it has improved. And I don't demand an explanation from myself as to why this is so. ~ Gerhard Richter
Commercial Viability Of Art quotes by Gerhard Richter
Art with a big A makes professionals uneasy. All art is one, and there is no difference in the mystery of the craft, only in the hand and eye of the craftsman. ~ Michael Powell
Commercial Viability Of Art quotes by Michael Powell
It is one of the ironies of biographical art that some details are more relevant than others, and many details have no relevance at all. ~ Paul Bailey
Commercial Viability Of Art quotes by Paul Bailey
Schelling's God is the totality of Nature struggling towards consciousness, and Man is as far as the struggle has got, with the animals not too far behind, vegetables somewhat lagging, and rocks nowhere as yet. Do we believe this? Does it matter? Think of it as a poem or a painting. Art doesn't have to be true like a theorem. It can be true in other ways. This truth says there is a meaning to it all, and Man is where the meaning begins to show. ~ Tom Stoppard
Commercial Viability Of Art quotes by Tom Stoppard
A Classical style ... is the syllogism of art, the only legitimate process from one world to another. Classicism is not the manner of any fixed age or of any fixed country; it is a constant state of the artistic mind. It is a temper of security and satisfaction and patience. ~ James Joyce
Commercial Viability Of Art quotes by James Joyce
I want to be an art-hero - I want to change the form of the novel. ~ Jeanette Winterson
Commercial Viability Of Art quotes by Jeanette Winterson
There's always been an incredible amount of junk music, and junk everything. Marshall McLuhan said that a medium surrounds a previous medium, and turns the previous medium into an art form. So, what was once a junk culture, like film, television surrounded it and turned it into an art form. ~ T Bone Burnett
Commercial Viability Of Art quotes by T Bone Burnett
My honors thesis project was my first interactive exhibit, in which two facing chairs were activated by a motion sensor when the viewer walked by. One was a cofortable armchair of plush red velvet, with a dildo sticking out of a hole in the seat. When activated, the dildo moved up and down and a strobe light pulsed. The facing chair was hard and uncomfortable, with spikes protruding from the seat, and when the viewer walked by it a dog would bark. The juxtaposition of the two chairs was meant to represent how forces of repression censor the desire for liberation.

In that same exhibition, I showed a handmade box in the shape of a cross, decorated with a beautiful painting of the Holy Trinity. The viewer was encouraged to open the box, where they would find a dildo wrapped in the American flag and nailed to a cross-- this was meant to symbolize the hypocrisy and repression that is hidden under the attractive facade of organized religion. The dildo was surrounded by pages from the Bible, which were themselves surrounded by images of the sickness and starvation caused by the embargo in Iraq, a comment on the effects of imposing one culture and religion on another. ~ Wafaa Bilal
Commercial Viability Of Art quotes by Wafaa Bilal
Art proper, in other words, emerges when sensation can detach itself and gain an autonomy from its creator and its perceiver when something of the chaos from which it is drawn can breathe and have a life of its own ~ Elizabeth Grosz
Commercial Viability Of Art quotes by Elizabeth Grosz
Art is often confused with the skill of drawing. It is the skill of making. ~ Stephen Metcalf
Commercial Viability Of Art quotes by Stephen Metcalf
Architecture is the triumph of human imagination over materials, methods, and men, to put man into possession of his own Earth. It is at least the geometric pattern of things, of life, of the human and social world. It is at best that magic framework of reality that we sometimes touch upon when we use the word order. ~ Frank Lloyd Wright
Commercial Viability Of Art quotes by Frank Lloyd Wright
It's a finger snapping kind of day. ~ Coco J. Ginger
Commercial Viability Of Art quotes by Coco J. Ginger
The record of one's life must needs prove more interesting to him who writes it than to him who reads what has been written. ~ Elizabeth Kenny
Commercial Viability Of Art quotes by Elizabeth Kenny
I have had this longstanding interest in going back to school to get a Ph.D. in art history. I was especially interested in exploring this idea of the ecstatic impulse in an artist. ~ Jandy Nelson
