Write what is important to you, regardless of fashion or marketability or anything like that – all those things are so far out of your control that you may as well not think about them. Of course, this may mean you'll never be published but that's a risk we all take every single time we set hands to keyboard or pen to paper. For me, if I can sit back at the end of a project and say, 'yes, I stayed honest, I said what I wanted to say, and I made it sing to the best of my ability', then I'm happy enough. Of course, if anyone wants to buy the damned thing off me when I'm done, that's jam I won't refuse. ~ Celine Kiernan
Celine Kiernan quotes by Celine Kiernan
Ananna of Tanarau is a delightfully irascible heroine, inhabiting a fascinating and fresh new world that I would love to spend more time in. Pirate ships? Camels? Shadow dwelling assassins? Yes please! Can I have some more? ~ Celine Kiernan
Celine Kiernan quotes by Celine Kiernan
It's the last residue of our closeness with God, I reckon, the ability to see the wonder of things. ~ Celine Kiernan
Celine Kiernan quotes by Celine Kiernan
A female character can: Like babies, Be devoted to her lover, Cry, Be gentle, Be scared, Be uncertain, Take advice, and still be a YA heroine ~ Celine Kiernan
Celine Kiernan quotes by Celine Kiernan
YA heroines can have romances that are subplots: can have goals other than getting/keeping a man: can put their lovers second. JUST LIKE YAheroes DO! ~ Celine Kiernan
Celine Kiernan quotes by Celine Kiernan
On the Hunger Games Fan Race fail and the portrayal of POC in fantasy literature:
It is as if the POC in the text are walking around with a great big red sign over them for some editors and it reads I AM NOT A REAL CHARACTER. I AM A PROBLEM YOU MUST DEAL WITH. The white characters are permitted to saunter about with their physical descriptions hanging out all over the place, but best not make mention of dark skin or woolly/curly hair or dark eyes (Unless, of course, that character is white. None of my white-skinned dark-eyed characters had any problem being described as such. And I'm pretty sure that Sól's curly hair never gave anyone a single pause for thought.) As I said, I understand the desire not to define a POC simply by their physical attributes, and I understand cutting physical descriptions if no other character is described physically – but pussyfooting about in this manner with POC is doing nothing but white wash the characters themselves. It's already much too hard to get readers to latch onto the fact that some characters may not be caucasian, why must we dance about their physical description as if it were some kind of shameful dirty little secret. You know what it reminds me of? It reminds me of the way homosexuality used to only ever be hinted at in texts. It was up to the reader to 'read between the lines' or 'its there if you look for it' and all that total bullshit which used to be the norm. ~ Celine Kiernan
Celine Kiernan quotes by Celine Kiernan
Reading helps you understand another person's truth, and gives you the tools to share your own truth with people you may never even meet ~ Celine Kiernan
Celine Kiernan quotes by Celine Kiernan
YA heroines can choose to have sex & they can choose not to without either decision becoming the focus of their story. ~ Celine Kiernan
Celine Kiernan quotes by Celine Kiernan
(on teaching writing)
So many writers come to class with one question dominant in their mind, 'How do I make a living from this?' It's a fair enough question and one I always try to answer well - but it saddens me that it so often overshadows the more relevant questions of 'why am I writing' and 'what am I saying' and 'how do I keep it honest. ~ Celine Kiernan
Celine Kiernan quotes by Celine Kiernan
We were watching telly the night Nan burnt the house down. ~ Celine Kiernan
Celine Kiernan quotes by Celine Kiernan
It is possible for YA heroines to go an entire book without discussing their love lives. ~ Celine Kiernan
Celine Kiernan quotes by Celine Kiernan
Interview on The Skiffy and Fanty Show 2010. In response to query that young adults may not be open to the nuances/realism in Moorehawke:

'(In fact)young adult readers seem to (be very inclined)to reading the (Moorehawke) books thematically. Some (not all) adult reviewers ... tend to be very plot oriented. Because the books are a slow release of information and very character driven ... (they) don't reward impatient reading ... but young adults seem to be very patient readers. They're very analytical as well. I get very analytical responses from my young adult readers. ~ Celine Kiernan
Celine Kiernan quotes by Celine Kiernan
My life had become one long cliffhanger ~ Celine Kiernan
Celine Kiernan quotes by Celine Kiernan
On the ghosts in Moorehawke & Into The Grey/Taken Away:
The ghosts ... are symbolic of those unresolved moments in history that linger, and affect the next generation. Sometimes this happens without that generation ever really knowing the truth of what has come before. This is so true of war, I think, where we are often only left the stories that the previous generation wanted us to hear ... How much harder would the truth be to deny were it lingering about as an actual manifestation of the past? ~ Celine Kiernan
Celine Kiernan quotes by Celine Kiernan
A YA heroine does not have to pick up a weapon nor wear men's clothing to be equal to her male counterparts. ~ Celine Kiernan
Celine Kiernan quotes by Celine Kiernan
It is as though the human race is always only waiting for permission to hate. ~ Celine Kiernan
Celine Kiernan quotes by Celine Kiernan
But they can rule by fraud, and by fraud eventually acquire access to the tools they need to finish the job of killing off the Constitution.'
'What sort of tools?'
'More stringent security measures. Universal electronic surveillance. No-knock laws. Stop and frisk laws. Government inspection of first-class mail. Automatic fingerprinting, photographing, blood tests, and urinalysis of any person arrested before he is charged with a crime. A law making it unlawful to resist even unlawful arrest. Laws establishing detention camps for potential subversives. Gun control laws. Restrictions on travel. The assassinations, you see, establish the need for such laws in the public mind. Instead of realizing that there is a conspiracy, conducted by a handful of men, the people reason - or are manipulated into reasoning - that the entire population must have its freedom restricted in order to protect the leaders. The people agree that they themselves can't be trusted. ~ Robert Anton Wilson
Celine Kiernan quotes by Robert Anton Wilson
First of all read Céline; the greatest writer of 2,000 years ~ Charles Bukowski
Celine Kiernan quotes by Charles Bukowski
P.S. I'm going to throw an absolutely mind-blowing fact your way. I'm not kidding, either. The country of Uganda is obsessed with Celine Dion. They dedicate entire days to broadcasting her music. They love her that much. Five words. My. Heart. Will. Go. On. Yeah. ~ Fisher Amelie
Celine Kiernan quotes by Fisher Amelie
It is not the task of a writer to 'tell all,' or even to decide what to leave in, but to decide what to leave out. Whatever remains, that meager sum of this profane division, that's the bastard chimera we call a 'story.' I am not building, but cutting away. And all stories, whether advertised as truth or admitted falsehoods, are fictions, cleft from the objective facts by the aforementioned action of cutting away. A pound of flesh. A pile of sawdust. Discarded chips of Carrara marble. And what's left over.
Houses Under The Sea ~ Caitlin R. Kiernan
Celine Kiernan quotes by Caitlin R. Kiernan
It seems strange to say this, but it is true: Coming back to Vegas to work is like going on vacation for me. ~ Celine Dion
Celine Kiernan quotes by Celine Dion
Ah, the beautiful Celine," Desmund said, earning a smile from her. "Did I ever tell you that you remind me of a courtesan I knew once in King George's court? She was stunning to look upon and much sought after."
Celine toyed with her hair. "You flatter me, Desmund. Was she someone of noble birth?"
"No, but I believe she serviced a duke or two."
I choked on my water. Tristan reached over to pat my back, while smiling graciously at the outraged woman. ~ Karen Lynch
Celine Kiernan quotes by Karen Lynch
One can't relive one's life. Forgiveness is not what's difficult; one's always too ready to forgive. And it does no good, that's obvious. ~ Louis Ferdinand Celine
Celine Kiernan quotes by Louis Ferdinand Celine
Everybody can remember outfits like Celine Dion's backwards Dior tuxedo ... these 'worst' dresses become part of pop culture, and we keep referencing them. ~ Brad Goreski
Celine Kiernan quotes by Brad Goreski
I design some of my own clothes now. ~ Kiernan Shipka
Celine Kiernan quotes by Kiernan Shipka
All in all, death is something like marriage. ~ Louis Ferdinand Celine
Celine Kiernan quotes by Louis Ferdinand Celine
When I hear something that comes from me that makes me fall down off my chair, it's not often. ~ Celine Dion
Celine Kiernan quotes by Celine Dion
Telling it all after the fact ... easier said than done! ... much easier! ~ Louis Ferdinand Celine
Celine Kiernan quotes by Louis Ferdinand Celine
Maybe that's what we look for all our lives, the worst possible grief, to make us truly ourselves before we die. ~ Louis Ferdinand Celine
Celine Kiernan quotes by Louis Ferdinand Celine
You can be a virgin in horror the same as in sex. ~ Louis Ferdinand Celine
Celine Kiernan quotes by Louis Ferdinand Celine
Things settled into a lazy pattern. School, chores, and long hours down by the river. Kiernan talked about the books he read sometimes, even loaned me a few. But I liked it better when he read to me or just told me the stories. The words were more real that way, more exciting. Huck Finn, Tom Sawyer, Ragged Dick, and all the others seemed flat and dull on the page, but Kiernan was good at making them come alive. ~ Rysa Walker
Celine Kiernan quotes by Rysa Walker
There is no way to bring back what is lost, but maybe telling a tale of beauty is a form of mourning. ~ Stephen Kiernan
Celine Kiernan quotes by Stephen Kiernan
Whatever they'd done to him, it had shaken something lose. "No," he repeated, calmer. "No. I'll save you for last. I owe you for what you did to me. I'll make you suffer like I did, then I'll bring you in."
And just like that, the fragile patchwork of hope shattered, stealing my breath and bleeding me dry. My hand closed around something - I had no idea what, but it was heavy. That was all I cared about. "Good," I said, resigned. I loved Kale and I'd do anything to get him back, but I wasn't stupid. "Then that gives me time."
"For what?"
I whipped the object - it turned out to be a wrench - around and slammed it into the side of Kale's head as Alex yanked up the garage door. "To knock some frigging sense into you."
I raced toward Alex as Kale went down and Kiernan burst through the door. ~ Jus Accardo
Celine Kiernan quotes by Jus Accardo
Kiernan gives him a suspicious look. "You performed at the Expo?"
"Yes," Bess answers. "Along with his brother, Dash. They headlined as The Brothers Houdini on the Midway Plaisance."
"Really?" Kiernan shakes his head. "I was there as well. For the entire run. I knew every headliner on the Midway."
Houdini eyes shift slightly. "Well, we weren't exactly headliners, but yes, we did perform at the Fair. ~ Rysa Walker
Celine Kiernan quotes by Rysa Walker
Those people were pushing life and night and day in front of them. Life hides everything from people. Their own noise prevents them from hearing anything else. They couldn't care less. The bigger and taller the city, the less they care. Take it from me. I've tried. It's a waste of time. ~ Louis Ferdinand Celine
Celine Kiernan quotes by Louis Ferdinand Celine
False humilty is annoying. ~ Elise Celine
Celine Kiernan quotes by Elise Celine
Compared with the addiction to perfect forms, cocaine is a pastime for stationmasters. But ~ Louis Ferdinand Celine
Celine Kiernan quotes by Louis Ferdinand Celine
Stop it," Chance says out loud, angryraw, scornful voice that she hardly recognizes, "Jesus, just fucking stop it," but she's crying again, and her eyes burn, and she's so goddamn sick of the sound, the smell and saltbland flavor of her own useless tears. ~ Caitlin R. Kiernan
Celine Kiernan quotes by Caitlin R. Kiernan
We went there to grope for our happiness, which all the world was threatening with the utmost ferocity. We were ashamed of wanting what we wanted, but something had to be done about it all the same. Love is harder to give up than life. In this world we spend our time killing or adoring, or both together. "I hate you! I adore you!" We keep going, we fuel and refuel, we pass on our life to a biped of the next century, with frenzy, at any cost, as if it were the greatest of pleasures to perpetuate ourselves, as if, when all's said and done, it would make us immortal. One way or another, kissing is as indispensable as scratching. ~ Louis Ferdinand Celine
Celine Kiernan quotes by Louis Ferdinand Celine
At the bottom of all music you have to hear the tune without notes, made just for us, the tune of Death. ~ Louis Ferdinand Celine
Celine Kiernan quotes by Louis Ferdinand Celine
The day I was born, March 1, 1994, Celine Dion was solid at #1 with 'The Power of Love.' Not a bad start to your life. ~ Justin Bieber
Celine Kiernan quotes by Justin Bieber
Writing makes it even harder than concrete. Writing makes it hard as diamond. ~ Caitlin R. Kiernan
Celine Kiernan quotes by Caitlin R. Kiernan
Man hardly comes in more than two varieties, wherever he is, whatever he does: workers and pimps ... they're either one or the other! ... and inventors, the worst kind of jobholder! ... they stand condemned! ... the writer who doesn't pimp along, peacefully plagiarizing, who doesn't pump out the pop stuff, he's had it! ... everybody hates him! ~ Louis Ferdinand Celine
Celine Kiernan quotes by Louis Ferdinand Celine
The poetry of heroism holds an irresistible appeal for people who aren't involved in a war, especially when they're making piles of money out of one. ~ Louis Ferdinand Celine
Celine Kiernan quotes by Louis Ferdinand Celine
Children don't know the law. Their parents slap them to teach them the law and protect them from pleasure. There's ~ Louis Ferdinand Celine
Celine Kiernan quotes by Louis Ferdinand Celine
Life must go on, even if it's no joke ... just pretend to believe in the future. ~ Louis Ferdinand Celine
Celine Kiernan quotes by Louis Ferdinand Celine
I've been playing since I was 5, but I wouldn't say that I'm serious about the piano. ~ Kiernan Shipka
Celine Kiernan quotes by Kiernan Shipka
The manager rolls his eyes. "Sorry, miss, already picked my dozen - "
"So make it a baker's dozen," someone yells from the back.
"Bet she can't hit the bloody nail anyway. Give us somethin' to laugh at." That voice is clearly Kiernan's, and most of the men chuckle.
-
Kiernan comes back about ten minutes later and takes his seat. "Good work."
I snort. "Don't give me that. I heard you back there."
"Just seeding the crowd. A time-honored practice among showmen and politicians alike. ~ Rysa Walker
Celine Kiernan quotes by Rysa Walker
And all the shelves rising up around her like book-lined walls of a fortress, safe in here, always safe in here from the world, guarded by books and all the secrets inside them, all the things hardly anyone else will ever care to learn. ~ Caitlin R. Kiernan
Celine Kiernan quotes by Caitlin R. Kiernan
Whether or not you agree with the outcome, the tremendous amount that the Manhattan Project accomplished in such a short amount of time–just under three years–is astonishing. It makes you wonder what other kinds of things could be accomplished with that kind of determination, effort, and financial and political support. What if the kind of money, manpower, and resources that went into the Manhattan Project went into the fight against hunger? Cancer? Homelessness? ~ Denise Kiernan
Celine Kiernan quotes by Denise Kiernan
A slap or a fat check is what it takes if you want to see all the passions that go beating about behind a face take a sudden tack. It's as beautiful as watching a sailing ship maneuvering in a stormy sea. The whole person keels over in the changed wind. ~ Louis Ferdinand Celine
Celine Kiernan quotes by Louis Ferdinand Celine
Everything that's important goes on in the darkness, no doubt about it. We never know anyone's real inside story. ~ Louis Ferdinand Celine
Celine Kiernan quotes by Louis Ferdinand Celine
Some people do drugs, I buy shoes! ~ Celine Dion
Celine Kiernan quotes by Celine Dion
Lovely sight, the Apocalypse! But absurdity, without limits? No Sir! there have to be certain limits ... ~ Louis Ferdinand Celine
