I sure wasn't going to ask Aunt Sally, because if she told me once that getting your period was like a moth becoming a butterfly, she'd probably say that sexual intercourse was like a deer getting antlers or something. ~ Phyllis Reynolds Naylor
Alice Mckinley quotes by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor
There is no innocent sleep so innocent as sleep shared between a woman and a child, the little breath hurrying beside the longer, as a child's foot runs. ~ Alice Meynell
Alice Mckinley quotes by Alice Meynell
I don't think I need to try everything to know I don't like it. ~ Alice Oseman

Never underestimate the power of a scented candle! declared a sign beneath a display of coloured candles.

Some people can't be warned away from disaster, you can try, you can put up every alert, but they'll still go their own way. ~ Alice Hoffman
Alice Mckinley quotes by Alice Hoffman
I used to think that I wanted to be a hat maker, but I don't think that would have worked out. ~ Alice Waters
Alice Mckinley quotes by Alice Waters
That would never do, I'm sure,' said Alice: `the governess would never think of excusing me lessons for that. If she couldn't remember my name, she'd call me "Miss!" as the servants do.'

Well. if she said "Miss," and didn't say anything more,' the Gnat remarked, `of course you'd miss your lessons. That's a joke. I wish YOU had made it.'

Why do you wish I had made it?' Alice asked. `It's a very bad one.'

But the Gnat only sighed deeply, while two large tears came rolling down its cheeks.

You shouldn't make jokes,' Alice said, `if it makes you so unhappy. ~ Lewis Carroll
Alice Mckinley quotes by Lewis Carroll
Three hundred years ago people believed in the devil. They believed if an incident could not be explained, then the cause was something wicked, and that cause was often a woman who was said to be a witch. Women who did as they pleased, women with propriety, women who had enemies, women who took lovers, women who knew about the mysteries of childbirth, all were suspect (…) ~ Alice Hoffman
Alice Mckinley quotes by Alice Hoffman
I try to believe in as many as six impossible things before breakfast. Count them, Alice. One, there are drinks that make you shrink. Two, there are foods that make you grow. Three, animals can talk. Four, cats can disappear. Five, there is a place called Underland. Six, I can slay the Jabberwocky. ~ Lewis Carroll
Alice Mckinley quotes by Lewis Carroll
Old post cards, tin wind-up toys with rusted gears, buttons long out of fashion, ticket stubs found in a shoebox in the attic - these are the things Alice likes, not new stuff that comes sealed in plastic. ~ Jan Strnad
Alice Mckinley quotes by Jan Strnad
the way he could walk straight into a party full of people they didn't know and stick his hand out to a stranger and say, "I'm Nick. This is my wife, Alice." It was as though he had an amazing skill, like playing a complicated musical instrument, that Alice could never hope to master. ~ Liane Moriarty
Alice Mckinley quotes by Liane Moriarty
The Bouviers and the Lees alike operated within the great American tradition of immigrant ambition, which held that in making yourself anew, you had the right to embellish the past. ~ Alice Kaplan
Alice Mckinley quotes by Alice Kaplan
He just stared at her, feeling his very soul swell with love as she padded toward him, barefooted. He loved her eyes; he loved her smile; he loved her pale, slender arms. He loved her dainty ankles, skimmed by the hem of her chemise. He loved her gliding walk and the way her long, thick hair swung around her waist as she hurried toward him. God help him, he was her slave. ~ Gaelen Foley
Alice Mckinley quotes by Gaelen Foley
Let things taste the way they are. ~ Alice Waters
Alice Mckinley quotes by Alice Waters
What he was doing was actually a hundred times worse. He was telling her that he loved her, something he hadn't mentioned and may not have even known when they were married. She used to whisper it to him sometimes, while he was fucking her, and he had to turn off his mind every time she did that. For some reason that declaration had seemed like a curse to him back then; he couldn't even hear it spoken aloud ~ Alice Hoffman
Alice Mckinley quotes by Alice Hoffman
Pursue Meaning, Not Happiness

Feeling happy is like feeling warm. It's a state of being that feels good. It might sound counterintuitive but focusing directly on pursuing happiness isn't always the best approach to increasing it. This parallels the idea that focusing on reducing anxiety isn't always the best way to decrease it.
What's an alternative to focusing on increasing your happiness? A better idea is focusing on pursuing things that feel meaningful. I'm not necessarily suggesting Mother Teresa-type activities. What gives you a sense of meaning could be anything from cooking for your friends to puttering away on projects in your garage.
Pursuing meaning rather than happiness helps you feel calmer when you're not feeling happy in a particular moment. It smooths out the emotional bumps that come with mistakes, failures, and disappointments. There's research showing that stress tends to be harmful only if you believe that it's harmful and that you can't cope with it. It's easier to believe in your capacity to cope with stress if the stress is part of the bigger picture of building a meaningful life.
Experiment: What makes for a meaningful life from your perspective? Skip over what you think you should answer and identify what's actually true for you. ~ Alice Boyes
Alice Mckinley quotes by Alice Boyes
And to me, wildness means following the growth of love. Like a plant reaching through stone toward the sun- ~ Alice Walker
Alice Mckinley quotes by Alice Walker
Our fathers valued change for the sake of its results; we value it in the act. ~ Alice Meynell
Alice Mckinley quotes by Alice Meynell
There is no resistance to the idea that what is foreign can be known. Can be understood. Can be held in the embrace of love that holds the Universe. Given this Earth on which we live and grow, given its beauty and generosity, its majesty and comfort, how can one doubt that one is loved? That in fact there is an abundance, not a scarcity of love? It is all anyone ever wants, really, I believe, and it is all around us as we starve. ~ Alice Walker
Alice Mckinley quotes by Alice Walker
You're here and I'm here and we're here and this is so much more than enough because it's everything. ~ Alice Clayton
Alice Mckinley quotes by Alice Clayton
If you lie to yourself about your own pain, you will be killed by those who will claim you enjoyed it. ~ Alice Walker
Alice Mckinley quotes by Alice Walker
No one really believes in equality who's on top. ~ Alice Duer Miller
Alice Mckinley quotes by Alice Duer Miller
I got a call from a record company offering me a contract, I did not want to take it because the Lord had pointed me in the direction of spiritual activity ... And then it was disclosed to me that I could do both spiritual and musical work. So for five years I executed that contract, and when it was finished, after I made the album Transfiguration, I didn't make another album until twenty-six years later. This new album, Translinear Light, came out of the pleading and constant appealing from my son Ravi Coltrane: 'Ma, please make a CD.' So I eventually agreed. ~ Alice Coltrane
Alice Mckinley quotes by Alice Coltrane
But chains made out of blood and memory were a thousand times more difficult to sever than those made of steel, and the past could overtake a person if she wasn't careful"
"The day had begun, cool and clear and absolutely impossible to avoid"
"Being a physician is like working on a machine that keeps breaking down, time after time"
"Honesty was like a stone, dropped and irretrievable once it was spoken aloud"
"Love was like that, like a dream you didn't quite understand, one in which you didn't necessarily know what you were looking at until it was right in front of you"
"adolescence is what makes the person ~ Alice Hoffman
Alice Mckinley quotes by Alice Hoffman
Campaigns are a great bore; they are mostly about either finding enough water for your company, or being up to your knees in mud and all the food's gone bad. Battles are blessedly brief; but you're sick with terror before, blind with panic during, and miserable with horror by the results, when you have to bury your friends, or listen to them scream. ~ Robin McKinley
Alice Mckinley quotes by Robin McKinley
She unwrapped the lamb chops from their white butcher paper and peeled a few potatoes and opened a can of peas. Her father came in with the newspaper under his arm and then swatted her on the hip with it as he went to the table to sit down. And then Jimmy came in still wearing his overcoat to say, "What's this? What's this?" And then told their father with his hands on his hips that George was taking "our miss here" out to dinner. And her father lowered the paper and smiled at her - his round, florid face and his sparse white hair which he no longer bothered to slick down with water or tonic, being mostly housebound and hardly out of his slippers all week long - and only began to pout a little, Jimmy too, when she set the plate of lamb chops and the mint jelly and the mashed potatoes and peas in their bowls on the table and then pulled off her apron and said, "I'm just going to take a shower." "Be sure to put it back," Jimmy said ~ Alice McDermott
Alice Mckinley quotes by Alice McDermott

"Allow me to introduce you to the Children of Mars. On lead guitar and eight barreled Calliope Gatlin, Colonel Fujiyama. On bass and manning the double-barreled thirty millimeter PPC's we have Major Howard. Singing backup and key boards we have Fight Captain Benz with a lovely ten millimeter rapid fire gauss rifle. Her lovely partner Captain Martin on drums with her ten millimeter Hell-bore pulse laser rifle. And singing lead and front man, a true artist with a bang from the Castile sniper rifle, our Big Daddy, Papa of Death and Destruction, the one, the only, the man, the myth, the legend, Lord James Nakatoma- Bailey." When I finished Alice was giggling out loud. ~ Jessie Wolf
Alice Mckinley quotes by Jessie Wolf
Alice had begun to think that very few things indeed were really impossible. There ~ Lewis Carroll
Alice Mckinley quotes by Lewis Carroll
We are all substantially flawed, wounded, angry, hurt, here on Earth. But this human condition, so painful to us, and in someways shameful- because we feel we are weak when the reality of ourselves is exposed- is made much more bearable when it is shared, face to face, in words that have expressive human eyes behind them ... ~ Alice Walker
Alice Mckinley quotes by Alice Walker
I didn't say there was nothing BETTER,' the King replied. 'I said there was nothing LIKE it.' Which Alice did not venture to deny. 'Who ~ Lewis Carroll
Alice Mckinley quotes by Lewis Carroll
I love going out and it is a bit sad when the photographers stop asking you for your picture. ~ Alice Evans
Alice Mckinley quotes by Alice Evans
The living room seemed to be where no living ever actually occurred. ~ Alice Sebold
Alice Mckinley quotes by Alice Sebold
Butter melting on a dish meant someone nearby was in love, and a bird in the house take your bad luck out the window. ~ Alice Hoffman
Alice Mckinley quotes by Alice Hoffman
We wanted it more live and raw. We didn't want a studio sound. ~ Alice Cooper
Alice Mckinley quotes by Alice Cooper
Kate thought Yolo was of the bear spirit. The bear, according to ancient people who had known bears well, was of a loyal, generous and young-loving nature. Bear mothers were the most dedicated parents imaginable. The most fierce in protecting their young; but also the most peaceful creatures when left unmolested. People with bear spirit had a certain level feel about them: they often seemed large and strong, even if they weren't particularly. They gave off a vibe that made you want to sit near them. Not to talk, necessarily, but to feel. ~ Alice Walker
Alice Mckinley quotes by Alice Walker
You can't get the visual thing on the record as much as you'd like to. We produced this album, and we'd never done that before, except when we produced singles for ourselves. ~ Alice Cooper
Alice Mckinley quotes by Alice Cooper
There are so many of these young-adult movies with these cold guys who act like jerks to girls but are hiding soft sentiments. But in the real world most guys who act like jerks are jerks. Generally they are. I spent a lot of high school thinking that horrible guys must be very sensitive and interesting and it's not true. ~ Alice Englert
Alice Mckinley quotes by Alice Englert
Do you want to know where Lucy went?
She went to play the game.
You can play, too.
Find a partner.
Find a key.
Find the road.
You have two days. ~ Kate Alice Marshall
Alice Mckinley quotes by Kate Alice Marshall
Take deep breaths and hold them. Try to stay still for longer and longer periods of time. Make yourself small and like a stone. Curl the edges of yourself up and fold them under where no one else can see. ~ Alice Sebold
Alice Mckinley quotes by Alice Sebold
In the garden where the lilacs were so tall it was impossible to see the road. The leaves were dusty, the way they always were in August when the weather turned hot. ~ Alice Hoffman
Alice Mckinley quotes by Alice Hoffman
It's the doubt that is really a major ingredient of the paranoid thriller. ~ Alice Winocour
Alice Mckinley quotes by Alice Winocour
We are taught to think ourselves ugly. Eyes are an assaulted sense. We are taught to behave by spankings and whippings. Touch is an assaulted sense. We are taught we should not smell, or we smell wrong. Smell is an assaulted sense. We listen to songs that call us 'hos and tell us how to give blow jobs. Hearing is an assaulted sense. Taste, not so much. ~ Alice Randall
Alice Mckinley quotes by Alice Randall
And if my choice is to sit graciously in my best robes and accept the inevitable or to bail a sea with a bucket, give me the bucket. ~ Robin McKinley
