So our task as stewards of the word begins and ends in love. Loving language means cherishing it for its beauty, precision, power to enhance understanding, power to name, power to heal. And it means using words as instruments of love. ~ Marilyn Chandler McEntyre
Understanding Language quotes by Marilyn Chandler McEntyre
We at Google have made tremendous advances in understanding language. Our knowledge graph has been fundamental to that. The new algorithm that we launched today called Hummingbird has been a great leap forward. ~ Amit Singhal
Understanding Language quotes by Amit Singhal
Every word we speak is million-faced or convertible to an indefinite number of applications. If it were not so we could read no book. Your remark would only fit your case, not mine. ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
Understanding Language quotes by Ralph Waldo Emerson
Computers are everywhere and you can't even begin to function with a computer unless you have comprehension and an understanding of the English language. ~ Wally Amos
Understanding Language quotes by Wally Amos
One must not assume that an understanding of science is present in those who borrow the language ~ Louis Pasteur
Understanding Language quotes by Louis Pasteur
Thoughts can increase our understanding of a subject, or they can just as easily constrict or block our understanding of a subject. It very much depends upon the language we are thinking in. ~ Frederick Lenz
Understanding Language quotes by Frederick Lenz
To understand is to perceive patterns. ~ Isaiah Berlin
Understanding Language quotes by Isaiah Berlin
The corruption of man is followed by the corruption of language ... In due time, the fraud is manifest, and words lose all power to stimulate the understanding or the affections. ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
Understanding Language quotes by Ralph Waldo Emerson
Jack Wise he got the prize for being circumspect, which is the great big grown up way of saying he's correct. ~ Sara Loo
Understanding Language quotes by Sara Loo
Some scholars argue that although the brain might contain neural subsystems, or modules, specialized for tasks like recognizing faces and understanding language, it also contains a part that constitutes a person, a self: the chief executive of all the subsystems. ~ Paul Bloom
Understanding Language quotes by Paul Bloom
Maybe then you comprehend, speaking one language only is a prison! ~ David Mitchell
Understanding Language quotes by David Mitchell
Things have changed, of course. There are counsellors at the ready. Kindness and understanding. Life is harder for some, we're told. Not their fault, even if the blows are purely imaginary. Felt just as keenly by the recipient, or the non recipient, as the case may be.
But good use can be made of everything, if you are willing. ~ Alice Munro
Understanding Language quotes by Alice Munro
My understanding is that Exxon, in particular, did fund a variety of small think tanks to generate what amounts to propaganda against understanding of what climate change was doing, the human role in causing it. ~ John Holdren
Understanding Language quotes by John Holdren
With That Moon Language Admit something: Everyone you see, you say to them, "Love me." Of course you do not do this out loud; Otherwise, Someone would call the cops. Still though, think about this, This great pull in us to connect. Why not become the one Who lives with a full moon in each eye That is always saying With that sweet moon Language What every other eye in this world Is dying to Hear. ~ Gregory Boyle
Understanding Language quotes by Gregory Boyle
Language is the tool of the tools ~ Lev S. Vygotsky
Understanding Language quotes by Lev S. Vygotsky
For what sense or understanding have they? They follow minstrels and take the multitude for a teacher, not knowing that many are bad and few good. For the best men choose one thing above all - immortal glory among mortals; but the masses stuff themselves like cattle. ~ Heraclitus
Understanding Language quotes by Heraclitus
Pictures artists staged their own images or copied or cut out others already in existence. The viewer took them in separately, in sometimes paradoxical waves: an original image, then the manipulations of it, then the places where image and idea intersected. This created a crucial perceptual glitch that irony and understanding filled. ~ Jerry Saltz
Understanding Language quotes by Jerry Saltz
When language is treated beautifully and interestingly, it can feel good for the body: It's nourishing; it's rejuvenating. ~ Aimee Bender
Understanding Language quotes by Aimee Bender
To the extent that language forces experiences into categories it is a screen between reality and the human being. In a word, we pay for its benefits ... Therefore, while using language, as we must of necessity, we should be aware of its shortcomings. ~ Abraham Maslow
Understanding Language quotes by Abraham Maslow
There were always a few words that his flamboyant English insisted he mispronounce: words, I often imagined, over which his heart took hidden pleasure when he had got them by the gullet and held them there until they empurpled to the color of his own indignant nature. "Another" was one of them--I cannot count how many times each day we would hear him say, "Anther?" "Anther?" It did not matter whether it was another meal or another government or another baby at issue: all we heard was a voice bristling over with amazement at the thought that another could exist. It seemed his patience could not sustain itself over the trisyllabic, tripping up his voice on most trisyllables that did not sound like "Pakistan"--for there was a word over which he could not slow down, to exude ownership as he uttered it! ~ Sara Suleri
Understanding Language quotes by Sara Suleri
My understanding of women goes only as far as the pleasures. ~ Michael Caine
Understanding Language quotes by Michael Caine
Conceit is incompatible with understanding. ~ Leo Tolstoy
Understanding Language quotes by Leo Tolstoy
Understanding POV is essential, or ought to be. ~ Arthur Herzog
Understanding Language quotes by Arthur Herzog
What matters is not the enclosure of the work within a harmonious figure, but the centrifugal force produced by it
a plurality of language as a guarantee of a truth that is not merely partial. ~ Italo Calvino
Understanding Language quotes by Italo Calvino
In other words, the man who is born into existence deals first with language; this is a given. He is even caught in it before his birth. ~ Jacques Lacan
Understanding Language quotes by Jacques Lacan
During our glorious year of 1974–5, while I was dithering over gravitational waves, and Stephen was leading our merged group in black hole research, Stephen himself had an insight even more radical than his discovery of Hawking radiation. He gave a compelling, almost airtight proof that, when a black hole forms and then subsequently evaporates away completely by emitting radiation, the information that went into the black hole cannot come back out. Information is inevitably lost.
This is radical because the laws of quantum physics insist unequivocally that information can never get totally lost. So, if Stephen was right, black holes violate a most fundamental quantum mechanical law.
How could this be? The black hole's evaporation is governed by the combined laws of quantum mechanics and general relativity - the ill-understood laws of quantum gravity; and so, Stephen reasoned, the fiery marriage of relativity and quantum physics must lead to information destruction.
The great majority of theoretical physicists find this conclusion abhorrent. They are highly sceptical. And so, for forty-four years they have struggled with this so-called information-loss paradox. It is a struggle well worth the effort and anguish that have gone into it, since this paradox is a powerful key for understanding the quantum gravity laws. Stephen himself, in 2003, found a way that information might escape during the hole's evaporation, but that did not quell theorists' struggles. Stephe ~ Stephen Hawking
Understanding Language quotes by Stephen Hawking
I'm naturally an optimist, but my basis for hope is rooted in my understanding of human nature. ~ Al Gore
Understanding Language quotes by Al Gore
Fascism was not simply a conspiracy - although it was that - but it was something that came to life in the course of a powerful social development. Language provides it with a refuge. Within this refuge a smoldering evil expresses itself as though it were salvation. ~ Theodor W. Adorno
Understanding Language quotes by Theodor W. Adorno
Language is a skin: I rub my language against the other. It is as if I had words instead of fingers, or fingers at the tip of my words. My language trembles with desire. ~ Roland Barthes
Understanding Language quotes by Roland Barthes
The only shadow thrown by a devoted friendship, Brendon, is the knowledge that it must some day come to an end ... Yet who would deny himself the glory of friendship, before the menace that it must sooner or later finish? A close amity and understanding, a discovery of kindred spirits, is the most precious experiences within the reach of mankind. ~ Eden Phillpotts
Understanding Language quotes by Eden Phillpotts
There are lots of guys out there who write a better prose line than I do and who have a better understanding of what people are really like and what humanity is supposed to mean – hell, I know that. ~ Stephen King
Understanding Language quotes by Stephen King
It is my conviction that it is the intuitive, spiritual aspects of us humans-the inner voice-that gives us the 'knowing,' the peace, and the direction to go through the windstorms of life, not shattered but whole, joining in love and understanding. ~ Elisabeth Kubler Ross
Understanding Language quotes by Elisabeth Kubler Ross
Green consumerism generally, and 'healthy' products and lifestyles in particular, contain quite precise notions about how an individual should consider his or her well-being. Not only is the market-place celebrated but an understanding of the 'natural body' itself becomes fetishised and idolised. Normality seems to have wholly dispensed with bodily illness and pain. Perfection is the norm, and one that can be gained through acquiring the correct products and perfecting the body. ~ Peter Dickens
Understanding Language quotes by Peter Dickens
My heart trips over itself in a race to get closer to her. Something is happening. Something strange and completely foreign. My heart is speaking a language I don't understand as it tries to fling itself at Charlotte. Great. Now, that's two organs I have to do battle with every day. ~ Lauren Blakely
Understanding Language quotes by Lauren Blakely
Actually, nothing hurts like hearing the word slut, unless it is hearing the word rape dropped about carelessly. Again, a word I wouldn't have thought much about, except that when I was in high school a girl gave her senior speech on her best friend's rape. She ended not with an appear for women's rights or self defense, but by begging us to consider our language. We use the word 'rape' so casually, for sports, for a failed test, to spice up jokes. 'The test raped me.' 'His smile went up to justifiable rape.' These references confer casualness upon the word, embedding it into our culture, stripping it of shock value, and ultimately numb us to the reality of rape. ~ Christine Stockton
Understanding Language quotes by Christine Stockton
Our end goal is not a Christian America, either of the made-up past or the hoped-for future. Our end goal is the kingdom of Christ, made up of every tribe, tongue, nation, and language. We are, in Christ, the heirs of this kingdom. ~ Russell D. Moore
Understanding Language quotes by Russell D. Moore
There are no sweeter words in the English language (or any other) than husband and wife. ~ Lanier Ivester
Understanding Language quotes by Lanier Ivester
I still, though, hold on to one single bleak truth: no one is safe, nothing is redeemed. Yet I am blameless. Each model of human behavior must be assumed to have some validity. Is evil something you are? Or is it something you do? My pain is constant and sharp and I do not hope for a better world for anyone. In fact I want my pain to be inflicted on others. I want no one to escape. But even after admitting this
and I have, countless times, in just about every act I've committed
and coming face to face with these truths, there is no catharsis. I gain no deeper knowledge about myself, no new understanding can be extracted from my telling. There has been no reason for me to tell you any of this. This confession has meant nothing ... ~ Bret Easton Ellis
Understanding Language quotes by Bret Easton Ellis
It is such a comfort to nestle up to Michael Angelo Sanzio Raphael when one is in trouble. He is such a grand tree. He has an understanding soul. After I talked with him and listened unto his voice, I slipped down out of his arms. ~ Opal Whiteley
Understanding Language quotes by Opal Whiteley
The great reproach always brought against Rabelais is not the want of reserve of his language merely, but his occasional studied coarseness, which is enough to spoil his whole work, and which lowers its value. ~ Francois Rabelais
Understanding Language quotes by Francois Rabelais

Long
Understanding Language quotes by Steven S. Long
And right then, I come the closest I think I ever will to understanding why Knight left. He left because the world is not made to accommodate people like him. He was never happy in his youth -- not in high school, not with a job, not being around other people. It made him feel constantly nervous. There was no place for him, and instead of suffering further, he escaped. It wasn't so much a protest as a quest; he was like a refugee from the human race. The forest offered him shelter (p 182) ~ Michael Finkel
Understanding Language quotes by Michael Finkel
The central assertion of this book is that the world of humankind constitutes a manifold, a totality of interconnected processes, and inquiries that disassemble this totality into bits and then fail to reassemble it falsify reality. Concepts like "nation," "society," and "culture" name bits and threaten to turn names into things. Only by understanding these names as bundles of relationships, and by placing them back into the field from which they were abstracted, can we hope to avoid misleading inferences and increase our share of understanding. ~ Eric R. Wolf
