Society as a whole is more and more splitting up into two great hostile camps ~ Karl Marx
Social Gap quotes by Karl Marx
There are writers who say they have no social responsibility except to write a good book, but that doesn't satisfy me. ~ Sheri S. Tepper
Social Gap quotes by Sheri S. Tepper
Had Martha Foley returned William [James Sidis]'s passion as Margaret [Engemann] did Norbert [Wiener]'s, perhaps the two prodigies would have had more in common in the long run. ... In the life of a prodigy, perhaps more than in the average life, a marriage or a requited love is the greatest single factor that can heal the old childhood wounds. William and Norbert's response to their childhood and teenage rejections and humiliations was to retreat into the painless world of ideas, where successes and satisfactions abounded. A successful love affair could be the key to reentry into the world of feeling, bridging the gap between the cerebral and the emotional lives. ~ Amy Wallace
Social Gap quotes by Amy Wallace
We think there is a knowledge or practice or surrender is needed that will close an imagined or felt gap, and allow some kind of merging with the truth. This is an idea, a thought that will keep you searching forever for some blissful experience that will last - no experience lasts. Who is watching this? Don't try to imagine it. You will only create another concept an imagined object and a lot frustration. Just be that. - and don't expect it to be wow experience ... don't expect it to be anything. ~ Mooji
Social Gap quotes by Mooji
From these prejudices there arises conflict, transient joys and suffering. But we are unconscious of this, unconscious that we are slaves to certain forms of tradition, to social and political environment, to false values. ~ Jiddu Krishnamurti
Social Gap quotes by Jiddu Krishnamurti
We will not leave this nation at the mercy of YouTube and Facebook ~ Recep Tayyip Erdogan
Social Gap quotes by Recep Tayyip Erdogan
It's the invention of clothes, not nature, that made "private parts" private. ~ Mokokoma Mokhonoana
Social Gap quotes by Mokokoma Mokhonoana
It's always great to do a movie that you find is entertaining, but also can give some sort of political or social message. ~ Edward Zwick
Social Gap quotes by Edward Zwick
To guarantee the individual maximum freedom within a social frame of minimal laws ensures - if not happiness - its hopeful pursuit. ~ John Updike
Social Gap quotes by John Updike
Novelty is adaptive when things are changing and you need to adapt yourself. Tradition is essential to lay down the stability to raise families and form cohesive social groups. ~ Tim Jackson
Social Gap quotes by Tim Jackson
Collectivism takes on many guises and seldom uses its own real name. Words like 'community' and 'social' soothe us into thinking that collectivist decision-making is somehow higher and nobler than individual or 'selfish' decision-making. But the cold fact is that communities do not make decisions. Individuals who claim to speak for the community impose their decisions on us all. ~ Doug Bandow
Social Gap quotes by Doug Bandow
Think about all the time, brainpower, and social or political capital you continued to spend on some commitment only because you didn't like the idea of quitting. ~ Steven D. Levitt
Social Gap quotes by Steven D. Levitt
At the time it really was the social women, the society ladies. There were the cool girls, like Aerin Lauder - everyone loved to see what Aerin was wearing. Carolyn Bessette was very much in that time period. Calvin [Kleine] was very influential in the '90s. ~ Roopal Patel
Social Gap quotes by Roopal Patel
Genres have a history and impose a historical character upon the writer. What is interesting in the poem involves a certain kind of dramatization of the self that you don't have to engage in in the essay. In fact, the essay is a more social medium than the poem. ~ Vijay Seshadri
Social Gap quotes by Vijay Seshadri
I have witnessed firsthand the anguish of this humanitarian tragedy - in Palestine, Iraq, Syria, Pakistan, and other conflict and post-conflict zones. The destruction of lives and hopes, the emotional trauma, and the economic, social, and political marginalization of the displaced, the human insecurity, with real and potentially devastating consequences over generations, in ever-widening arenas of conflict. We can and must ensure the human rights of the displaced. That begins by making their voices heard. ~ Queen Noor Of Jordan
Social Gap quotes by Queen Noor Of Jordan
Words are big. They define who you are. They are permanent. I don't think most people realize that. What you say is who you are. So try to be gentle on social media. Lift others up when you can, even if you don't agree with what they have to say. Don't always turn your words into weapons when you can just as easily make them doves. ~ Jann Arden
Social Gap quotes by Jann Arden
What is inherent or intuitively "known within" and what has been taught? Nature or Nurture? Perhaps our "amnesia" is actually our society "telling" us to ignore impressions, intuitions, and feelings that many of us have that could be interpreted as recollections from past lives or contact with the spirit realm. The Western paradigm, like other traditions and societies, will bring us, through the back door, to mass hypnosis and social enculturation, sometimes called education. It is often the process of enculturation, or education and assimilation, that "causes" us to ignore our feelings and intuitions, to essentially forget our 6th sense connected to our higher selves, and divine wisdom. We are strongly encouraged here in the West to put aside childish notions. Not so fast. Forget not that it was Jesus who said: "Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven." (The Bible, Matthew 18:3) ~ Stephen Poplin
Social Gap quotes by Stephen Poplin
Social justice cannot be attained by violence. Violence kills what it intends to create. ~ Pope John Paul II
Social Gap quotes by Pope John Paul II
Social sorrow loses half its pain. ~ Samuel Johnson
Social Gap quotes by Samuel Johnson
The act of writing itself is much like the construction of a mirror made of words. Looking at certain illuminated corners of or cracks within the mirror, the author can see fragments of an objective reality that comprise the physical universe, social communities, political dynamics, and other facets of human existence. Looking in certain other corners of the same mirror, he or she may experience glimpses of a True Self sheltered deftly behind a mask of public proprieties. ~ Aberjhani
Social Gap quotes by Aberjhani
Increasingly constructive doubt is the sign of advancing civilization. We must put question marks along many of our inherited legal dogmas, since they are dangerously out of line with social facts. ~ Jerome Frank
Social Gap quotes by Jerome Frank
The curious thing is Americans don't mind individual mandates when they come in the form of payroll taxes to buy mandatory public insurance. In fact, that's the system we call Social Security and Medicare, and both are so popular politicians dare not touch them. ~ Robert Reich
Social Gap quotes by Robert Reich
As the social matrix becomes increasingly subject to rapid fluctuations, throwing out anchors into a collectivised past becomes more prominent than movement into a future. The desire to establish a core identity within the profusion of styles has led to image building becoming an industry in itself - as much reflected by the tactics of political groups and corporate bodies, as in the fetishistic scramble for designer labels and trendy occult symbols. Identity has, therefore, become another commodity to be traded in the marketplace. The gulf between objective icons and the Illusory has widened to such an extent that illusions have come to equal value. ~ Phil Hine
Social Gap quotes by Phil Hine
Not sure how this whole social media thing is supposed to be fun. It's like being back in elementary school and waiting to be picked for kickball. ~ Katie McGarry
Social Gap quotes by Katie McGarry
[ ... ] elite social engineers appear to be aiming at a "hetero-homo" world, i.e. where individuals are bisexual, promiscuous and bereft of family. ~ Henry Makow
Social Gap quotes by Henry Makow
The portentous development of our present economic system, leading to a mighty accumulation of social wealth in the hands of privileged minorities and to a continuous impoverishment of the great masses of the people, prepared the way for the present political and social reaction, and befriended it in every way. It sacrificed the general interests of human society to the private interests of individuals, and thus systematically undermined the relationship between man and man. People forgot that industry is not an end in itself, but should be only a means to insure to man his material subsistence and to make accessible to him the blessings of a higher intellectual culture. Where industry is everything and man is nothing begins the realm of a ruthless economic despotism whose workings are no less disastrous than those of any political despotism. The two mutually augment one another, and they are fed from the same source. ~ Rudolf Rocker
Social Gap quotes by Rudolf Rocker
The legislator commands the future; to be feeble will avail him nothing: it is for him to will what is good and to perpetuate it; to make man what he desires to be: for the laws, working upon the social body, which is inert in itself, can produce either virtue or crime, civilized customs or savagery. ~ Louis Antoine De Saint-Just
Social Gap quotes by Louis Antoine De Saint-Just
My being gay is not a social issue; it's a fact. It's not something to be debated. It's a reality. ~ Jose Antonio Vargas
Social Gap quotes by Jose Antonio Vargas
Whatever the price of the Chinese Revolution, it has obviously succeeded not only in producing more efficient and dedicated administration, but also in fostering high morale and community of purpose. The social experiment in China under Chairman Mao's leadership is one of the most important and successful in human history. ~ David Rockefeller
Social Gap quotes by David Rockefeller
What makes the Universal Declaration an epochal document is first of all its global impetus and secondly the breadth of its claims, a commitment to a new social contract, binding on all the Governments of the world. ~ John Charles Polanyi
Social Gap quotes by John Charles Polanyi
Solidarity ... is a structural value of the social doctrine, as Blessed John Paul II reminded us. ~ Pope Francis
Social Gap quotes by Pope Francis
Creosote made Mandy think of the thrill of rushing through a garden sprinkler as a kid, of playing washer toss in the backyard, of spending nights in the neighbors' huge in-ground swimming pool when she was twelve, throwing glow sticks in the turquoise water during Canada Day block parties. She thought of Jud for a moment, how he'd loved doing all those things when he was a kid, but how, as he got older, it was all about popularity, sports, a life of illusion… and without warning, a totally different kind of memory filled her mind – the dull feeling of her head hitting the concrete walls near the wood shop at her old high school, the sounds of kids laughing, the sharp smell of sawdust, the buzzing of electric sanders nearby, the sound of Jud laughing while he beat her up… without realizing it, she'd started crying noiselessly. ~ Rebecca McNutt
Social Gap quotes by Rebecca McNutt
How well you tell your story determines how well your customers tell your story. ~ Simon Mainwaring
Social Gap quotes by Simon Mainwaring
How can so many (white, male) writers narratively justify restricting the agency of their female characters on the grounds of sexism = authenticity while simultaneously writing male characters with conveniently modern values?

The habit of authors writing Sexism Without Sexists in genre novels is seemingly pathological. Women are stuffed in the fridge under cover of "authenticity" by secondary characters and villains because too many authors flinch from the "authenticity" of sexist male protagonists. Which means the yardstick for "authenticity" in such novels almost always ends up being "how much do the women suffer", instead of - as might also be the case - "how sexist are the heroes".

And this bugs me; because if authors can stretch their imaginations far enough to envisage the presence of modern-minded men in the fake Middle Ages, then why can't they stretch them that little bit further to put in modern-minded women, or modern-minded social values? It strikes me as being extremely convenient that the one universally permitted exception to this species of "authenticity" is one that makes the male heroes look noble while still mandating that the women be downtrodden and in need of rescuing.

-Comment at Staffer's Book Review 4/18/2012 to "Michael J. Sullivan on Character Agency ~ Foz Meadows
Social Gap quotes by Foz Meadows
If the Russians have gone too far in subjecting the child and his peer group to conformity to a single set of values imposed by the adult society, perhaps we have reached the point of diminishing returns in allowing excessive autonomy and in failing to utilize the constructive potential of the peer group in developing social responsibility and consideration for others. ~ Urie Bronfenbrenner
Social Gap quotes by Urie Bronfenbrenner
Markets are free when human beings have equal opportunities to influence the production and trade of desirable goods and services... Some people attain market control and set market prices due to favourable natural, social or political conditions: They attain a monopoly. The problem with monopolies is that they enable those who have attained them to extract money from society without providing goods or services of corresponding value. Apart from abolute monopolies, monopolies can also occur when the market is simply closed to new participants because overall supply can't be increased; these are known as entry monopolies. ~ Martin Adams
Social Gap quotes by Martin Adams
I definitely believe that art is the best way to produce social change. ~ Pedro Reyes
Social Gap quotes by Pedro Reyes
I regard this novel as a work without redeeming social value, unless it can be recycled as a cardboard box. ~ Ellen Goodman
Social Gap quotes by Ellen Goodman
The other mothers, the teachers, the people. I didn't realize that having a child was so social. You're always talking to people. ~ Liane Moriarty
Social Gap quotes by Liane Moriarty
But this book is about something else: what goes on in the lives of real people when the industrial economy goes south. It's about reacting to bad circumstances in the worst way possible. It's about a culture that increasingly encourages social decay instead of counteracting it. The problems that I saw at the tile warehouse run far deeper than macroeconomic trends and policy. too many young men immune to hard work. Good jobs impossible to fill for any length of time. And a young man [one of Vance's co-workers] with every reason to work - a wife-to-be to support and a baby on the way - carelessly tossing aside a good job with excellent health insurance. More troublingly, when it was all over, he thought something had been done to him. There is a lack of agency here - a feeling that you have little control over your life and a willingness to blame everyone but yourself. This is distinct from the larger economic landscape of modern America. ~ J.D. Vance
