Being Jesus means that we go through life embracing it all fully and feeling it all deeply. That we don't hide and try to protect ourselves. That we live. That we show up. That we laugh. That we cry. That we hurt. That we heal. That we care. That we love. And then, that we wake up the next morning and sign up for it all over again. ~ Jim Palmer
Shedding Religion quotes by Jim Palmer
One of the most freeing discoveries these past few years in my relationship with God is discovering that God is not a belief system or a fixed set of theological propositions. ~ Jim Palmer
Shedding Religion quotes by Jim Palmer
It is not miracles that dispose realists to belief. The genuine realist, if he is an unbeliever, will always find strength and ability to disbelieve in the miraculous, and if he is confronted with a miracle as an irrefutable fact he would rather disbelieve his own senses than admit the fact. Even if he admits it, he admits it as a fact of nature till then unrecognized by him. Faith does not, in the realist, spring from the miracle but the miracle from faith. If the realist once believes, then he is bound by his very realism to admit the miraculous also. ~ Fyodor Dostoyevsky
Shedding Religion quotes by Fyodor Dostoyevsky
Sannyas is only a declaration. The work is meditation. In one single word, my religion is complete, and that is meditation. ~ Rajneesh
Shedding Religion quotes by Rajneesh
Religious creeds are a great obstacle to any full sympathy between the outlook of the scientist and the outlook which religion is so often supposed to require ... The spirit of seeking which animates us refuses to regard any kind of creed as its goal. It would be a shock to come across a university where it was the practice of the students to recite adherence to Newton's laws of motion, to Maxwell's equations and to the electromagnetic theory of light. We should not deplore it the less if our own pet theory happened to be included, or if the list were brought up to date every few years. We should say that the students cannot possibly realise the intention of scientific training if they are taught to look on these results as things to be recited and subscribed to. Science may fall short of its ideal, and although the peril scarcely takes this extreme form, it is not always easy, particularly in popular science, to maintain our stand against creed and dogma. ~ Arthur Stanley Eddington
Shedding Religion quotes by Arthur Stanley Eddington
I'm rather secular. I'm basically Jewish. But I think I'm Jewish not because of the Jewish religion at all. ~ Mel Brooks
Shedding Religion quotes by Mel Brooks
There is superficial conflict but deep concord between science and theistic religion, but superficial concord and deep conflict between science and naturalism. ~ Alvin Plantinga
Shedding Religion quotes by Alvin Plantinga
Those who become entangled in these false ideas are prevented from perceiving the Integral Oneness. ~ Rene Magritte
Shedding Religion quotes by Rene Magritte
A man only misfortune is to forsake his Maker. ~ Lailah Gifty, Akita
Shedding Religion quotes by Lailah Gifty, Akita
Finally, let us not forget the religious character of our origin. Our fathers were brought hither by their high veneration for the Christian religion. They journeyed by its light, and labored in its hope. They sought to incorporate its principles with the elements of their society, and to diffuse its influence through all their institutions, civil, political, or literary. Let us cherish these sentiments, and extend this influence still more widely; in full conviction that that is the happiest society which partakes in the highest degree of the mild and peaceful spirit of Christianity. ~ Daniel Webster
Shedding Religion quotes by Daniel Webster
The Qur'an sought to reform, not to destroy and start from scratch, to
salvage what was useful and then to modify and build on it. The task was
to get the Arabs to think about religion in a novel way, to inculcate in them a new conceptual frame of reference, to transfer them from one worldview to another, and higher, one. This process of transformation took them from traditionalism to individualism, from impulsiveness to discipline, from supernaturalism to science, from intuition to conscious reasoning and, in the end, ideally, harmonized the whole. ~ Jeffrey Lang
Shedding Religion quotes by Jeffrey Lang
Without God and religion you don't have moral truth, you have moral opinion ~ Dennis Prager
Shedding Religion quotes by Dennis Prager
The blurbs on the flyleaf, written by leading American historians, were fulsome, praising the book for shedding light on a forgotten chapter in colonial history. ~ Teju Cole
Shedding Religion quotes by Teju Cole
We are not clear as to the role in life of these chemicals; nor are we clear as to the role of the physician. You know, of course, that in ancient times there was no clear distinction between priest and physician. ~ Alan Watts
Shedding Religion quotes by Alan Watts
The Christian religion alone contemplates the conjugal union in the order of nature; it is the only religion which presents woman to man as a companion; every other abandons her to him as a slave. To religion alone do European women owe their liberty. ~ Jacques-Henri Bernardin De Saint-Pierre
Shedding Religion quotes by Jacques-Henri Bernardin De Saint-Pierre
When you consider the superstitions and the imaginings of the old Cornish country-folk up to my grandmother's day, how their lives were swaddled in them from the cradle to the grave, their daily actions in large part determined by them - so many things you would not think of doing, like starting a journey on a Friday, or looking at the moon through a pane of glass, or failing to wear something new on Whitsunday - their minds haunted by ghosts and fears, you have a fair idea of what the minds of these people in the sixteenth century were like. It was a life full of shadows that frightened them and dangers that might come home to them; how much more so in those days when their fears had the sanction, and even the corroboration, of the elect and the intelligent: when a uniform religion existed to enforce its lessons and draw the moral. However, no doubt it filled up life for them, made it more interesting and exciting, more mysterious and incalculable; it added a dimension to it, where the modern uneducated, rid of their fears and ghosts, are apt to find life empty and void of meaning. ~ A.L. Rowse
Shedding Religion quotes by A.L. Rowse
A religion that doesn't discriminate wouldn't exist, because it wouldn't stand for anything. ~ Janet Parshall
Shedding Religion quotes by Janet Parshall
Religion is just an interpretation; science is another one. ~ M. T. Panchal
Shedding Religion quotes by M. T. Panchal
Being doped is a pleasure you pay for. There was always opium there for the people
in the end it tainted their whole faith. If the Church had not always stood so watchfully behind the ruling powers, there would not have been such attacks against everything it stood for
although of course it may have been competing with them for the first place among the rulers, as in the Middle Ages. Whenever it was a question of keeping the serfs, and then the paid slaves down, the dope-dealers came unfailingly to the help of the oppressors. ~ Ernst Bloch
Shedding Religion quotes by Ernst Bloch
Prayer of Peace
I offer this prayer of peace
Not to the Christian God
Nor to the Buddhist God
Nor to the Islamic God
Nor to the Jewish God
But to the God of all humanity.
For the peace that we wish for
Is Not a Christian peace
Nor a Buddhist peace
Nor an Islamic peace
Nor a Jewish peace
But a human peace
For all of us.
I offer this prayer of peace
To the God that lives within all of us
That fills us with happiness and joy
To make us whole
And help us understand life
As an expression of love for all human beings.
For no religion can be better
Than any other religion
For no truth can be truer
Than any other truth
For no nation can be bigger
Than the earth itself.
Help us all go beyond
Our small limits
And realize that we are one
That we are all from the earth.
That we are all earth people
Before we are Indians, Koreans, or Americans.

God made the earth
We humans have to make it prosper
By realizing that we are of the earth
And not of any nation, race, or religion,
By knowing that we are truly one
In our spiritual heritage.
Let us now apologize
To all humanity
For the hurt that religions have caused,
So that we can heal the hurt
Let us now promise to one another
To go beyond egotism and competition
To come together as one in God.
I offer this prayer of ~ Ilchi Lee
Shedding Religion quotes by Ilchi Lee
We must also remember that in every little village-god and every little superstitious custom is that which we are accustomed to call our religious faith. But local customs are infinite and contradictory. Which are we to obey, and which not to obey? The Brāhmin of Southern India, for instance, would shrink in horror at the sight of another Brahmin eating meat; a Brahmin in the North thinks it a most glorious and holy thing to do - he kills goats by the hundred in sacrifice. If you put forward your custom, they are equally ready with theirs. Various are the customs all over India, but they are local. The greatest mistake made is that ignorant people always think that this local custom is the essence of our religion. ~ Swami Vivekananda
Shedding Religion quotes by Swami Vivekananda
If I believe in anything, it is in the dark night of the soul. Awe is my religion, and mystery is its church. ~ Charles Simic
Shedding Religion quotes by Charles Simic
You believe in God?" demanded Billy Karma.
"I believe in thirty-seven separate and distinct gods," answered Argyle proudly. "That puts me thirty-six ahead of you."
"It makes you a pagan."
"It makes you a man of limited vision," said Argyle. ~ Mike Resnick
Shedding Religion quotes by Mike Resnick
God must hate common people, because he made them so common. ~ Philip Wylie
Shedding Religion quotes by Philip Wylie
As a man, casting off worn out garments taketh new ones, so the dweller in the body, entereth into ones that are new. ~ Epictetus
Shedding Religion quotes by Epictetus
It is the things for which there is no evidence that are believed with passion. ~ Bertrand Russell
Shedding Religion quotes by Bertrand Russell
The only power desirable is the grace to pray. ~ Lailah Gifty Akita
Shedding Religion quotes by Lailah Gifty Akita
Religion will not get us where we need to go. It just goes so far, and then we're on our own toward the open space where there are no religious practices or beliefs. ~ Art Hochberg
Shedding Religion quotes by Art Hochberg
People nearly always believe, and are willing to back it up with weapons and cruelty, that their religion and way of life is better than the other person's. ~ Caroline B. Cooney
Shedding Religion quotes by Caroline B. Cooney
Although hundreds of friends
Have become my foes,
The friendship of One
Has given security to my soul.
Rejecting many I have embraced the One-
At last
I am He and He is me. ~ Sarmad Shaheed
Shedding Religion quotes by Sarmad Shaheed
It is taboo in our society to criticize a persons religious faith ... these taboos are offensive, deeply unreasonable, but worse than that, they are getting people killed. This is really my concern. My concern is that our religions, the diversity of our religious doctrines, is going to get us killed. I'm worried that our religious discourse- our religious beliefs are ultimately incompatible with civilization. ~ Sam Harris
Shedding Religion quotes by Sam Harris
When your own thoughts are forbidden, when your questions are not allowed and our doubts are punished, when contacts with friendships outside of the organization are censored, we are being abused, for the ends never justify the means. When our heart aches knowing we have made friendships and secret attachments that will be forever forbidden if we leave, we are in danger. When we consider staying in a group because we cannot bear the loss, disappointment and sorrow our leaving will cause for ourselves and those we have come to love, we are in a cult ... If there is any lesson to be learned it is that an ideal can never be brought about by fear, abuse, and the threat of retribution. When family and friends are used as a weapon in order to force us to stay in an organization, something has gone terribly wrong. ~ Deborah Layton
Shedding Religion quotes by Deborah Layton
It is clear that something is seriously lacking in the way we humans are going about things. But what is it that we lack? The fundamental problem, I believe, is that at every level we are giving too much attention to the external, material aspects of life while neglecting moral ethics and inner values. By inner values, I mean the qualities that we all appreciate in others, and toward which we all have a natural instinct, bequeathed by our biological nature as animals that survive and thrive only in an environment of concern, affection, and warm-heartedness-or in a single word, compassion. The essence of compassion is a desire to alleviate the suffering of others and to promote their well-being. This is the spiritual principle from which all other positive inner value emerge. ~ Dalai Lama XIV
Shedding Religion quotes by Dalai Lama XIV
I am and always will be a Muslim. My religion is Islam. ~ Malcolm X
Shedding Religion quotes by Malcolm X
If there's good, strong evidence from science that such and such is the case and this is contrary to Buddhism, then we will change. ~ Dalai Lama XIV
Shedding Religion quotes by Dalai Lama XIV
What a shame it would be, if upon death, one who lived his life following his religion, were to find out that there is no Heaven and no Hell and that all souls just go out and back to the places where they came from, finally free from the monsters that hung onto their backs while they were in this world! And what a shame it would be, if upon death, one who lived life with no thought of her own soul, were to find out that some souls go to some place wonderful and some souls go to some place horrible! But what a shame it would be, for anyone, to live a life here on this Earth full of fear, void of freedom and happiness, meaningless and empty, due to either the probability of Heaven and Hell or the absence thereof! So what is really true, is that you and I have bones in our bodies and have flesh under our skin and we ought to live this life right here in such a way that creates Heaven on Earth and puts Hell far away. ~ C. JoyBell C.
Shedding Religion quotes by C. JoyBell C.
Current research in any field of Science has not yet reached the point where we could start exploring the existential question regarding God as a Supreme Entity driving causality in the universe. However, as modern Neuroscience progresses further and gets more advanced, we shall get to dive deeper into the physiological processes underneath the Qualia of God in human mind. ~ Abhijit Naskar
Shedding Religion quotes by Abhijit Naskar
The Qur'an has not merely been revealed in Arabic: it has been revealed in eloquent Arabic. The language is clear and cogent, and there is no vagueness in it; every word is unambiguous and every style adopted is well known to its addressees. The Qur'an says:

The faithful Spirit has brought it down into your heart [O Prophet] that you may become a warner [for people] in eloquent Arabic. (26:193-195)

In the form of an Arabic Qur'an, free from any ambiguity that they may save themselves [from punishment]. (39:28)

This is an obvious reality about the Qur'an. If this premise is accepted, then it must be conceded that no word used or style adopted by the Qur'an is rare or unknown (shadh). Its words and styles are well known and conventionally understood by its addressees. No aspect of the language has any peculiarity or rarity in it. Consequently, while interpreting the Qur'an, the conventionally understood and known meanings of the words should be taken into consideration. Apart from them, no interpretation is acceptable. Thus in the verses: وَالنَّجْمُ وَالشَّجَرُ يَسْجُدَانِ (6:55), the meaning of the word اَلنَّجْمُ can only be "stars". In وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَا مِن قَبْلِكَ مِن رَّسُولٍ وَلَا نَبِيٍّ إِلَّا إِذَا تَمَنَّى أَلْقَى الشَّيْطَانُ فِي أُمْنِيَّتِهِ (52:22), the word تَمَنَّى can only mean "desire". In أَفَلَا يَنظُرُونَ إِلَى الْإِبِلِ كَيْفَ خُلِقَتْ (17:88), the word الْإِبِلِ has only been used for "camel". The only meaning of t ~ Javed Ahmad Ghamidi

Two things which are the peculiar domain of the heart, not the mind - politics and religion. He doesn't want to know the other side. He wants arguments and statistics for his own side, and nothing more. ~ Mark Twain
Shedding Religion quotes by Mark Twain
In the places that call me out, I know I'll recover my wordless childhood trust in the largeness of life and its willingness to take me in. ~ Barbara Kingsolver
Shedding Religion quotes by Barbara Kingsolver
To respect the borders of love
is to respect the borders of life.

I consider dogmatism a far greater threat than religion per se. ~ Frans De Waal
Shedding Religion quotes by Frans De Waal
Man seeks to learn, and man kills himself because of the loss of cohesion in his religious society; he does not kill himself because of his learning. It is certainly not the learning he acquires that disorganizes religion; but the desire for knowledge wakens because religion becomes disorganized. ~ Emile Durkheim
Shedding Religion quotes by Emile Durkheim
Thou shalt not condemn one's faith to strengthen thy own. ~ Ilango Boopalan
Shedding Religion quotes by Ilango Boopalan
Slavery destroys, or vitiates, or pollutes, whatever it touches. No interest of society escapes the influence of its clinging curse. It makes Southern religion a stench in the nostrils of Christendom; it makes Southern politics a libel upon all the principles of republicanism; it makes Southern literature a travesty upon the honorable profession of letters. ~ Hinton Rowan Helper
