A hundred years ago, Auguste Comte, ... a great philosopher, said that humans will never be able to visit the stars, that we will never know what stars are made out of, that that's the one thing that science will never ever understand, because they're so far away. And then, just a few years later, scientists took starlight, ran it through a prism, looked at the rainbow coming from the starlight, and said: "Hydrogen!" Just a few years after this very rational, very reasonable, very scientific prediction was made, that we'll never know what stars are made of. ~ Michio Kaku
Scientific Prediction quotes by Michio Kaku
Even if we have a reliable criterion for detecting design, and even if that criterion tells us that biological systems are designed, it seems that determining a biological system to be designed is akin to shrugging our shoulders and saying God did it. The fear is that admitting design as an explanation will stifle scientific inquiry, that scientists will stop investigating difficult problems because they have a sufficient explanation already.

But design is not a science stopper. Indeed, design can foster inquiry where traditional evolutionary approaches obstruct it. Consider the term "junk DNA." Implicit in this term is the view that because the genome of an organism has been cobbled together through a long, undirected evolutionary process, the genome is a patchwork of which only limited portions are essential to the organism. Thus on an evolutionary view we expect a lot of useless DNA. If, on the other hand, organisms are designed, we expect DNA, as much as possible, to exhibit function. And indeed, the most recent findings suggest that designating DNA as "junk" merely cloaks our current lack of knowledge about function. For instance, in a recent issue of the Journal of Theoretical Biology, John Bodnar describes how "non-coding DNA in eukaryotic genomes encodes a language which programs organismal growth and development." Design encourages scientists to look for function where evolution discourages it.

Or consider vestigial organs that later are found t ~ William A. Dembski
Scientific Prediction quotes by William A. Dembski
Mimetic theory explains the presence of disabilities and infirmities in a great many mythical stories. When there is no ground for making a victim of someone - because he isn't guilty of anything - people act as children do and make a scapegoat of someone who is physically unattractive, or who is an outsider. The number of outsiders in myths is quite extraordinary. And why are so many victims lame? My work is scientific because it tries to solve the puzzle constituted by these clues, to explain why outsiders, many of them handicapped, are made into victims and forcibly expelled from a community. The burden falls on anyone who doubts my theory to supply a better explanation, or else to adopt mine for want of a more satisfactory one. ~ Rene Girard
Scientific Prediction quotes by Rene Girard
These days, however, the main problem comes from the right - from conservatives who, unlike most economists, really do think that the free market is always right-to such an extent that they refuse to believe even the most overwhelming scientific evidence if it seems to suggest a justification for government action. ~ Paul Krugman
Scientific Prediction quotes by Paul Krugman
I think political science is bad at prediction. We don't gaze into a crystal ball. I do not believe that we predict things. ~ Ian Bremmer
Scientific Prediction quotes by Ian Bremmer
Planting and growing increasing quantities of trees is the scientific solution to Earth's environmental dilemma. ~ Richard St. Barbe Baker
Scientific Prediction quotes by Richard St. Barbe Baker
Both, business expectation and scientific hypothesis serve the same purpose; both reflect an attempt at cognition and orientation in an imperfectly known world, both embody imperfect knowledge to be tested and improved by later experience. Each expectation does not stand by itself but is the cumulative result of a series of former expectations which have been revised in the light of later experience, and these past revisions are the source of whatever present knowledge we have ~ Ludwig Lachmann
Scientific Prediction quotes by Ludwig Lachmann
A theory which cannot be mortally endangered cannot be alive. ~ W. A. H. Rushton
Scientific Prediction quotes by W. A. H. Rushton
[I]t is truth alone-scientific, established, proved, and rational truth-which is capable of satisfying nowadays the awakened minds of all classes. We may still say perhaps, 'faith governs the world,'-but the faith of the present is no longer in revelation or in the priest-it is in reason and in science. ~ Henri Frederic Amiel
Scientific Prediction quotes by Henri Frederic Amiel
I am bold enough to say that a man-made Moon voyage will never occur regardless of all scientific advances. ~ Lee De Forest
Scientific Prediction quotes by Lee De Forest
The pursuit of knowledge is, I think, mainly actuated by love of power. And so are all advances in scientific technique. ~ Bertrand Russell
Scientific Prediction quotes by Bertrand Russell
Faith is harder to shake than knowledge, love succumbs less to change than respect, hate is more enduring than aversion, and the impetus to the mightiest upheavals on this earth has at all times consisted less in a scientific knowledge dominating the masses than in a fanaticism which inspired them and sometimes in a hysteria which drove them forward. ~ Adolf Hitler
Scientific Prediction quotes by Adolf Hitler
It is almost impossible for contemporaries to judge the true value of discoveries, or to give the proper position to the men of their own time who make these discoveries. The Surgeon-General of the Public Health Service expected the greatest results to flow from his commission of medical officers, but the conclusions of the Board turned out to be all wrong, while he did not notice the report from his own subordinate, Dr. H. R. Carter, which turned out to be pure gold and was one of the great steps in establishing the true method of the transmission of Yellow Fever. ~ William Crawford Gorgas
Scientific Prediction quotes by William Crawford Gorgas
Technology must be guided and driven by ethics if it is to do more than provide new toys for the rich. ~ Freeman Dyson
Scientific Prediction quotes by Freeman Dyson
It wouldn't be easy with this man. He had trouble written all over him.
But there was something else too ... There was something in his eyes that gave her an absolute surety that he'd be worth the struggle.
She expected scientific proof of many things. But sometimes fate was just fate. And he was hers. ~ Lauren Dane
Scientific Prediction quotes by Lauren Dane
Hence the aim of meditation, in the context of Christian faith, is not to arrive at an objective and apparently 'scientific' knowledge of God, but to come to know him through the realization that our very being is penetrated with his knowledge and love for us. Our knowledge of God is paradoxically a knowledge not of him as the object of our scrutiny, but of ourselves as utterly dependent on his saving and merciful knowledge of us. It is in proportion as we are known to him that we find our real being and identity in Christ. We know him and through ourselves in so far as his truth is the source of our being and his merciful love is the very heart of our life and existence. We have no other reason for being, except to be loved by him as our Creator and Redeemer, and to love him in return. There is no true knowledge of God that does not imply a profound grasp and an intimate personal acceptance of this profound relationship. ~ Thomas Merton
Scientific Prediction quotes by Thomas Merton
Boo-hoo," said Dr Abbey. "Let me know when you people want to grow a pair and join the scientific community. We're looking for answers. We'd love access to your lab equipment."
"You mean join the mad scientists," spat Kelly, guilt turning into anger in an instant.
"You say potato, I say pass the jumper cables," said Dr Abbey. ~ Mira Grant
Scientific Prediction quotes by Mira Grant
If humanity today succeeds in combining the new scientific capacities with a strong ethical dimension, it will certainly be able to promote the environment as a home and a resource for ... all ... and will be able to eliminate the causes of pollution and to guarantee adequate conditions of hygiene and health for small groups as well as for vast human settlements. ~ Pope John Paul II
Scientific Prediction quotes by Pope John Paul II
A lot of my research time is spent daydreaming - telling an imaginary admiring audience of laymen how to understand some difficult scientific idea. ~ Leonard Susskind
Scientific Prediction quotes by Leonard Susskind
Thus natural science is not a way of knowing the real world; its value lies not in its truth but in its utility; by scientific thought we do not know nature, we dismember it in order to master it. ~ R.G. Collingwood
Scientific Prediction quotes by R.G. Collingwood
Nuclear energy is the scientific achievement of the Iranian nation. ~ Mahmoud Ahmadinejad
Scientific Prediction quotes by Mahmoud Ahmadinejad
Plato may have denied the existence of ideal forms in this world, but Plato never saw a Viking ship.
(Scientific American, February, 1998) ~ John Hale
Scientific Prediction quotes by John Hale
It necessarily follows that chance alone is at the source of every innovation, and of all creation in the biosphere. Pure chance, absolutely free but blind, at the very root of the stupendous edifice of evolution: this central concept of modern biology is no longer one among many other possible or even conceivable hypotheses. It is today the sole conceivable hypothesis, the only one that squares with observed and tested fact. And nothing warrants the supposition - or the hope - that on this score our position is ever likely to be revised. There is no scientific concept, in any of the sciences, more destructive of anthropocentrism than this one. ~ Jacques Monod
Scientific Prediction quotes by Jacques Monod
My scientific studies have afforded me great gratification; and I am convinced that it will not be long before the whole world acknowledges the results of my work. ~ Gregor Mendel
Scientific Prediction quotes by Gregor Mendel
Debating, doubting, or rejecting the basic scientific facts about climate change in the face of the overwhelming evidence and overwhelming scientific opinion will not change those facts. ~ Bernie Sanders
Scientific Prediction quotes by Bernie Sanders
We used to be a source of fuel; we are increasingly becoming a sink. These supplies of foreign liquid fuel are no doubt vital to our industry, but our ever-increasing dependence upon them ought to arouse serious and timely reflection. The scientific utilisation, by liquefaction, pulverisation and other processes, or our vast and magnificent deposits of coal, constitutes a national object of prime importance. ~ Winston Churchill
Scientific Prediction quotes by Winston Churchill
The history of ideas, then, is the discipline of beginnings and ends, the description of obscure continuities and returns, the reconstitution of developments in the linear form of history. But it can also, by that very fact, describe, from one domain to another, the whole interplay of exchanges and intermediaries: it shows how scientific knowledge is diffused, gives rise to philosophical concepts, and takes form perhaps in literary works; it shows how problems, notions, themes may emigrate from the philosophical field where they were formulated to scientific or political discourses; it relates work with institutions, social customs or behaviour, techniques, and unrecorded needs and practices; it tries to revive the most elaborate forms of discourse in the concrete landscape, in the midst of the growth and development that witnessed their birth. It becomes therefore the discipline of interferences, the description of the concentric circles that surround works, underline them, relate them to one another, and insert them into whatever they are not. ~ Michel Foucault
Scientific Prediction quotes by Michel Foucault
Let it be understood, in the first place, that a science fiction story must be an exposition of a scientific theme and it must be also a story. ~ Hugo Gernsback
Scientific Prediction quotes by Hugo Gernsback
Let me see if I can put this in scientific terms: Think of autism like a fart, and vaccines are the finger you pull to make it happen. ~ Jenny McCarthy
Scientific Prediction quotes by Jenny McCarthy
When physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, contribute to the detection of concrete human woes and to the development of plans for remedying them and relieving the human estate, they become moral; they become part of the apparatus of moral inquiry or science? When the consciousness of science is fully impregnated with the consciousness of human value, the greatest dualism which now weighs humanity down, the split between the material, the mechanical and the scientific and the moral and ideal will be destroyed. ~ John Dewey
Scientific Prediction quotes by John Dewey
A third of all Americans think that Saddam Hussein was behind the attacks on September 11.3 Nearly a quarter still think that there's no solid evidence that smoking kills.4 And as recently as 2007, 40 percent of Americans believed that scientific experts were still arguing about the reality of global warming.5 ~ Naomi Oreskes
Scientific Prediction quotes by Naomi Oreskes
Chance ... in the accommodation peculiar to sensorimotor intelligence, plays the same role as in scientific discovery. It is only useful to the genius and its revelations remain meaningless to the unskilled. ~ Jean Piaget
Scientific Prediction quotes by Jean Piaget
Science is what scientists do, and there are as many scientific methods as there are individual scientists. ~ Percy Williams Bridgman
Scientific Prediction quotes by Percy Williams Bridgman
It does
not matter; there's many a heavenly body in the lot crowding upon us of
a night that mankind had never heard of, it being outside the sphere
of its activities and of no earthly importance to anybody but to the
astronomers who are paid to talk learnedly about its composition,
weight, path
the irregularities of its conduct, the aberrations of its
light
a sort of scientific scandal-mongering. ~ Joseph Conrad
Scientific Prediction quotes by Joseph Conrad
