In the 1920s, there was a dinner at which the physicist Robert W. Wood was asked to respond to a toast ... 'To physics and metaphysics.' Now by metaphysics was meant something like philosophy - truths that you could get to just by thinking about them. Wood took a second, glanced about him, and answered along these lines: The physicist has an idea, he said. The more he thinks it through, the more sense it makes to him. He goes to the scientific literature, and the more he reads, the more promising the idea seems. Thus prepared, he devises an experiment to test the idea. The experiment is painstaking. Many possibilities are eliminated or taken into account; the accuracy of the measurement is refined. At the end of all this work, the experiment is completed and ... the idea is shown to be worthless. The physicist then discards the idea, frees his mind (as I was saying a moment ago) from the clutter of error, and moves on to something else. The difference between physics and metaphysics, Wood concluded, is that the metaphysicist has no laboratory. ~ Carl Sagan
Robert W Wood quotes by Carl Sagan
Because I'm a synesthete I see characters in colors and I perceive a W as green. ~ Robert Cailliau
Robert W Wood quotes by Robert Cailliau
The concepts of health and sickness, good and evil, better and worse, have the same use and relation to life as those of long and short, high and low to carpentry: even a short piece of wood can be three inches long. Even cancer is called a growth, and when Ramana Maharshi was dying of cancer he resisted the doctors,
saying, "It wants to grow, too. Let it." This is, perhaps, an extreme example of renunciation - not of love
or energy - but of willing right as against wrong, and thus of renouncing one's own separateness from
everything that happens, which is what Tillich called "the courage to be. ~ Alan W. Watts
Robert W Wood quotes by Alan W. Watts
In contrast to emotional hunger, which has a profound detrimental effect on the growing child, real love sustains and nurtures. Genuine love may be operationally defined as those behaviors that enhance the well-being of children and assist them in reaching their full potential. Outward manifestations of love can be observed in people who make real emotional contact with another person; that is, they have frequent eye contact, display spontaneous, nonclinging physical affection, and take obvious pleasure in the other person's company. In an intimate relationship, love is expressed through direct, honest communication, mutual respect, acknowledgement of each other's boundaries, and a desire to share and cooperate. ~ Robert W. Firestone
Robert W Wood quotes by Robert W. Firestone
Indulgent Reader, up till now I have concealed it, but I must confess at last. I have one besetting weakness, a weakness that amounts to a vice. I am ashamed of it. Often I have tried to wean myself of it; often cursed the heredity that imposed it on me. Opium? Morphine? Cocaine? Nothing so fashionable. Absinth? Brandy? Gin? Nothing so normal. Alas! let me whisper it in your ear: I am a Chewing Gum Fiend! ~ Robert W. Service
Robert W Wood quotes by Robert W. Service
Government does not create wealth; it redistributes it. Whatever it gives you it must first take from someone else. ~ Robert W. McGee
Robert W Wood quotes by Robert W. McGee
Lost in a haunted wood,
Children afraid of the night
Who have never been happy or good. ~ W. H. Auden
Robert W Wood quotes by W. H. Auden
As it recurred again and again, it set me thinking of what my architect's books say about the custom in early times to consecrate the choir as soon as it was built, and that the nave, being finished sometimes half a century later, often did not get any blessing at all: I wondered idly if that had been the case at St. Barnabe, and whether something not usually supposed to be at home in a Christian church, might have entered undetected, and taken possession of the west gallery. I had read of such things happening too, but not in works on architecture.
("In The Court Of The Dragon") ~ Robert W. Chambers
Robert W Wood quotes by Robert W. Chambers
When the power inherent in a position of authority is used to fortify that position, the institution's purpose is subverted. Behaviors are not aligned with the institution';s professed goals; rather they are skewed to preserve the rank, power, salaries, and security of rank-holders. -- "Somebodies and Nobodies", by Robert W. Fuller ~ Robert W. Fuller
Robert W Wood quotes by Robert W. Fuller
Give me the scorn of the stars and a peak defiant;
Wail of the pines and a wind with the shout of a giant;
Night and a trail unknown and a heart reliant. ~ Robert W. Service
Robert W Wood quotes by Robert W. Service
I saw the lake of Hali, thin and blank, without a ripple or wind to stir it, and I saw the towers of Carcosa behind the moon. Aldebaran, the Hyades, Alar, Hastur, glided through the cloud-rifts which fluttered and flapped as they passed like the scolloped tatters of the King in Yellow. ~ Robert W. Chambers
Robert W Wood quotes by Robert W. Chambers
The roots of Campanella's "Solar City" (and the District of Columbia) can be found in deeper occult parallels within the literature formulated by hermetical philosophers Giovanni Pico della Mirandola and Marsilio Ficino in Renaissance Florence; both prophetically predicting the restoration of the Egyptian solar religion as the correct political theology of the planet and itself the model for a "New World" civil religion. In another words they believed the Abrahamic solar faiths of Christianity, Judaism, and Islam would ultimately be exposed as substituted forms of Egyptian sun worship with in "New World" - the United States. It would be this "New World" that would midwife civilization from the waning Piscean Age into the "Masonic" Aquarian Age, a new age of the holy spirit. Simon Greenleaf's Druids and Campanella's Solarians are the de-facto "mediating" Joachimite order through which heavenly signs are mediated by a Sun Priest - an executive or President - who frames policy based upon his knowledge of the correspondences between science (i.e. Egyptian natural religion), grades of being, and heavenly correspondences. This polity was replicated from 1797 within the General Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons with reference both to Enoch (cf. Webb's 1797 Monitor) and the priest king Melchizedek of which the Grand Master DeWitt Clinton became the symbolic presiding executive. This configuration is important to make because it establishes the position of the District of Columbia ~ Robert W. Sullivan IV
Robert W Wood quotes by Robert W. Sullivan IV
Come and see my rose-coloured bath full of death! ~ Robert W. Chambers
Robert W Wood quotes by Robert W. Chambers
Someone has to borrow every dollar we have in circulation, cash or credit. ~ Robert W. Hemphill
Robert W Wood quotes by Robert W. Hemphill
It's easy to fight when everything's right And you're mad with the thrill and the glory; It's easy to cheer when victory's near, And wallow in fields that are gory. It's a different song when everything's wrong, When you're feeling infernally mortal; When it's ten against one, and hope there is none, Buck up, little soldier, and chortle! ~ Robert W. Service
Robert W Wood quotes by Robert W. Service
Let the red dawn surmise What we shall do, When this blue starlight dies And all is through.
(The Yellow Sign) ~ Robert W. Chambers
Robert W Wood quotes by Robert W. Chambers
The nation needs to return to the colonial way of life, when a wife was judged by the amount of wood she could split. ~ W.C. Fields
Robert W Wood quotes by W.C. Fields
We have seen a central government promote the power of labor-union bosses, and in turn be supported by that power, until it has become entirely too much a government of and for one class, which is exactly what our Founding Fathers wanted most to prevent. ~ Robert W. Welch, Jr.
Robert W Wood quotes by Robert W. Welch, Jr.
A semantic definition of a particular set of command types, then, is a rule for constructing, for any command of one of these types, a verification condition on the antecedents and consequents. ~ Robert W. Floyd
Robert W Wood quotes by Robert W. Floyd
There are strange things done in the midnight sun
By the men who moil for gold;
The Arctic trails have their secret tales
That would make your blood run cold;
The Northern Lights have seen queer sights,
But the queerest they ever did see
Was that night on the marge of Lake Lebarge
I cremated Sam McGee. ~ Robert W. Service
Robert W Wood quotes by Robert W. Service
A half-dead thing in a stark, dead world, clean mad for the muck called gold;
While high overhead, green, yellow and red, the North Lights swept in bars?-
Then you've a hunch was the music meant ... hunger and night and the stars. ~ Robert W. Service
Robert W Wood quotes by Robert W. Service
If there is ever a science of programming language design, it will probably consist largely of matching languages to the design methods they support. ~ Robert W. Floyd
Robert W Wood quotes by Robert W. Floyd
The man who can fight to heaven's own height is the man who can fight when he's losing. ~ Robert W. Service
Robert W Wood quotes by Robert W. Service
Evil is not the opposite of love; evil
is the absence of love." by Robert W. Chapman. Author of A Certain Fall. ~ Robert W. Chapman
Robert W Wood quotes by Robert W. Chapman
In the best days of our republic Americans were fiercely proud of the fact that rich and poor met on such equal terms in so many ways, and without the slightest trace of hostility. ~ Robert W. Welch, Jr.
Robert W Wood quotes by Robert W. Welch, Jr.
I have been forced to believe that neither the scholarly grace of my friend Elliott nor the buxom beauty of my friend Rowden have touched that heart of ice."

Elliot and Rowden, boiling with indignation, cried out, "And you!"

"I," said Clifford blandly, "do fear to tread where you rush in. ~ Robert W. Chambers
Robert W Wood quotes by Robert W. Chambers
The mask of self-deception was not longer a mask for me, it was a part of me. Night lifted it, laying bare the stifled truth below; but there was no one to see except myself, and when day broke the mask fell back again of its own accord. ~ Robert W. Chambers
Robert W Wood quotes by Robert W. Chambers
I have no doubt at all the Devil grins,
As seas of ink I spatter.
Ye gods, forgive my "literary" sins
The other kind don't matter. ~ Robert W. Service
Robert W Wood quotes by Robert W. Service
The responsibilities which are imposed by rank and privilege and good fortune can ... become very onerous indeed. ~ Robert W. Welch, Jr.
Robert W Wood quotes by Robert W. Welch, Jr.
The average person is unaware that he or she is living out a negative destiny according to his or her past (childhood) programming, preserving his or her familiar identity, and, in the process, pushing love away. On an unconscious level, many people sense that if they did not push love away, the whole world, as they have experienced it, would be shattered and they would not know who they were. ~ Robert W. Firestone
Robert W Wood quotes by Robert W. Firestone
I cannot forget Carcosa where black stars hang in the heavens; where the shadows of men's thoughts lengthen in the afternoon, when the twin suns sink into the lake of Hali; and my mind will bear for ever the memory of the Pallid Mask. ~ Robert W. Chambers
Robert W Wood quotes by Robert W. Chambers
Finance is the art of passing money from hand to hand until it finally disappears. ~ Robert W. Sarnoff
Robert W Wood quotes by Robert W. Sarnoff
In the Constitution of the American Republic there was a deliberate and very extensive and emphatic division of governmental power for the very purpose of preventing unbridled majority rule. ~ Robert W. Welch, Jr.
