When we were working on 'Looking' in San Francisco, I bought a new bike from Mission Bicycle Company, which I'm completely in love with. ~ Murray Bartlett
Pietanza Bartlett quotes by Murray Bartlett
...I am better Thoughtful Prince than King.
Potential holds appeal since in its castle walls
One is protected from the awful shame
Of failure. ~ Mike Bartlett
Pietanza Bartlett quotes by Mike Bartlett
Many of my sharpest critics have decided to take a position of ignoring me - because they feel that by attacking me, they would draw attention to my book and give me more publicity and help me sell more books. So I think that they decided that the best thing for them to do is to say nothing. Also, I think that some of my critics simply can't refute my argument - and so it's easier for them to ignore it as well, so that they're not forced to confront the logical contradiction in their own position. ~ Bruce Bartlett
Pietanza Bartlett quotes by Bruce Bartlett
If they take their children to doctors, they believe they are putting their faith in man instead of in God. ~ Bob Bartlett
Pietanza Bartlett quotes by Bob Bartlett
A liberal education is at the heart of a civil society, and at the heart of a liberal education is the act of teaching. ~ A. Bartlett Giamatti
Pietanza Bartlett quotes by A. Bartlett Giamatti
I'm the world's expert on sterotypes held by academics about athletes and held by athletes about academics. To me, both of them are caricatures. ~ A. Bartlett Giamatti
Pietanza Bartlett quotes by A. Bartlett Giamatti
Among nonclassical ions the ratio of conceptual difficulty to molecular weight reaches a maximum with the cyclopropylcarbinyl-cyclobutyl system. ~ Paul Doughty Bartlett
Pietanza Bartlett quotes by Paul Doughty Bartlett
Americans like to believe we can overcome all obstacles and always triumph in the end, but that's not real life and a steady diet of stories like that will give you a pretty unhealthy view of reality. ~ Bartlett Sher
Pietanza Bartlett quotes by Bartlett Sher
Reservation should be under 'Bartlett.' Right, that's two T's. Yes. 'Bart-let-et.' ~ John Bartlett
Pietanza Bartlett quotes by John Bartlett

Pietanza Bartlett quotes by Murray Bartlett
Drama belongs in fiction. ~ Brian Bartlett
Pietanza Bartlett quotes by Brian Bartlett
As she rattles on, about Violet, about Gemma Sterling, about the Bartlett Dirt, I don't say anything else. I suddenly don't want Bren or Charlie to talk about Violet, because I want to keep her to myself, like the Christmas I was eight - back when Christmases were still good - and got my first guitar, which I named No Trespassing, as in no one could touch it but me. ~ Jennifer Niven
Pietanza Bartlett quotes by Jennifer Niven
It's obvious that a lot of Tea Party members tend to be elderly. You've seen that famous sign, 'Tell the government to keep its hands off my Medicare.' And I think as long as the government does keep its hands off their Medicare, they're fine with talking about low taxes. But once they start to realize that the Republicans really do want to not just cut Medicare, but essentially abolish it, you know, I just think those people are not going to be part of the Tea Party. They're going to be over with Occupy Wall Street. ~ Bruce Bartlett
Pietanza Bartlett quotes by Bruce Bartlett
It is a law of nature that a dream carried for too long inside you must, eventually, begin to rot. ~ Neil Bartlett
Pietanza Bartlett quotes by Neil Bartlett
To make a lacy texture of holes and fills, turn around and purl. Pearl is also a kind of colour. Colours are all the colours of the rainbow and the colours between the rainbow colours between. I can never get indigo. Year after year, I wait for indigo, but even when the fashion is navy, you never get indigo, the glow, the long slow glow of indigo in the high night sky. ~ Anne Bartlett
Pietanza Bartlett quotes by Anne Bartlett
There never was found a man who had courage to acknowledge himself a coward. ~ Joseph R. Bartlett
Pietanza Bartlett quotes by Joseph R. Bartlett
To go from Yale to the National League is simply to go from one form of management to another. ~ A. Bartlett Giamatti
Pietanza Bartlett quotes by A. Bartlett Giamatti
A tremendous social responsibility comes with being a successful public performer. ~ A. Bartlett Giamatti
Pietanza Bartlett quotes by A. Bartlett Giamatti
Words when spoken out loud for the sake of performance are music. They have rhythm and pitch and timbre and volume. These are the properties of music and music has the ability to find us and move us and lift us up in ways that literal meaning can't. ~ Josiah Bartlett
Pietanza Bartlett quotes by Josiah Bartlett
I feel like the Wurzels visiting Buckingham Palace! ~ Lilly Bartlett
Pietanza Bartlett quotes by Lilly Bartlett
On a spring day in 1988…a Massachusetts man who collected books about local history was rummaging through a bin in a New Hampshire antiques barn when something caught his eye. Beneath texts on fertilizers and farm machines lay a slim, worn pamphlet with tea-colored paper covers, titled Tamerlane and Other Poems, by an unnamed author identified simply as "a Bostonian." He was fairly certain he had found something exceptional, paid the $15 price, and headed home, where Tamerlane would spend only one night. The next day, he contacted Sotheby's, and they confirmed his suspicion that he had just made one of the most exciting book discoveries in years. The pamphlet was a copy of Edgar Allan Poe's first text, written when he was only fourteen years old, a find that fortune-seeking collectors have imagined happening upon probably more than they'd like to admit. The humble-looking, forty-page pamphlet was published in 1827 by Calvin F.S. Thomas, a relatively unknown Boston printer who specialized in apothecary labels, and its original price was about twelve cents. But this copy, looking good for its 161 years, most of which were probably spent languishing in one dusty attic box after another, would soon be auctioned for a staggering $198,000. ~ Allison Hoover Bartlett
Pietanza Bartlett quotes by Allison Hoover Bartlett
A child's behavior we see on the surface is the reflection of the feelings that are rooted underneath. We can use topical treatments to try to shape what the behavior looks like, but if we really want things to change, we need to address the roots. Nourish the roots, see the growth. ~ Kelly Bartlett
Pietanza Bartlett quotes by Kelly Bartlett
On matters of race, on matters of decency, baseball should lead the way. ~ A. Bartlett Giamatti
Pietanza Bartlett quotes by A. Bartlett Giamatti
What does the Right have to show for eight years of a Republican presidency? I supported George W. Bush in 2000 because I thought he had a conservative bone in his body somewhere. I supported him in 2004 because I thought him the lesser of two evils. At this point, I wouldn't let the fool park his car in my driveway. Bruce Bartlett was right, every damn word. ~ John Derbyshire
Pietanza Bartlett quotes by John Derbyshire
You meet new people. We just spent two hours with people we didn't know before, just talking about the Badgers. ~ Steve Bartlett
Pietanza Bartlett quotes by Steve Bartlett
It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops. Today, October 2, a Sunday of rain and broken branches and leaf-clogged drains and slick streets, it stopped and summer was gone. ~ A. Bartlett Giamatti
Pietanza Bartlett quotes by A. Bartlett Giamatti
The difference between a person who appreciates books, even loves them, and a collector is not only degrees of affection, I realized. For the former, the bookshelf is a kind of memoir; there are my childhood books, my college books, my favorite novels, my inexplicable choices. Many matchmaking and social networking websites offer a place for members to list what they're reading for just this reason: books can reveal a lot about a person. This is particularly true of the collector, for whom the bookshelf is a reflection not just of what he has read but profoundly of who he is: 'Ownership is the most intimate relationship that one can have to objects. Not that they can come alive in him; it is he who comes alive in them,' wrote cultural critic Walter Benjamin. ~ Allison Hoover Bartlett
Pietanza Bartlett quotes by Allison Hoover Bartlett
Part of living in a free society is accepting that no idea is beyond being challenged or ridiculed, and that nothing is more stifling to free expression than being afraid to upset or offend. ~ Jamie Bartlett
Pietanza Bartlett quotes by Jamie Bartlett
All play aspires to the condition of paradise ... through play in all its forms ... we hope to achieve a state that our larger Greco-Roman, Judeo- Christian culture has always known was lost. Where it exists, we do not know, although we always have envisioned it as a garden ... always as removed, as an enclosed green place ... Paradise is an ancient dream ... It is a dream of ourselves as better than we are, back to what we were. ~ A. Bartlett Giamatti
Pietanza Bartlett quotes by A. Bartlett Giamatti
The greatest thing about being a writer is the fact you never have to learn lines - you get to write them!
~ Neill Bartlett
Pietanza Bartlett quotes by Neill Bartlett
There are many who lust for the simple answers of doctrine or decree. They are on the left and right. They are not confined to a single part of the society. They are terrorists of the mind. ~ A. Bartlett Giamatti
Pietanza Bartlett quotes by A. Bartlett Giamatti
When a day goes by and I haven't written anything, I better have been doing something worth writing about. ~ P.S. Bartlett
Pietanza Bartlett quotes by P.S. Bartlett
Baseball has the largest library of law and love and custom and ritual, and therefore, in a nation that fundamentally believes it is a nation under law, well, baseball is America's most privileged version of the level field. ~ A. Bartlett Giamatti
Pietanza Bartlett quotes by A. Bartlett Giamatti
I saw a painting once where the artist had actually done that
signed his work in blood ... When I saw that, I thought it was as if the man who had painted the picture wanted to say to me, Well, you did ask what this actually cost. ~ Neil Bartlett
Pietanza Bartlett quotes by Neil Bartlett
Major sports are major parts of society. It's not anomalous to have people who love sports come from other parts of that society. ~ A. Bartlett Giamatti
Pietanza Bartlett quotes by A. Bartlett Giamatti
I have gathered a posy of other men's flowers and nothing but the thread that binds them is mine own. ~ John Bartlett
Pietanza Bartlett quotes by John Bartlett
The growing inequality of wealth and income distribution is both a moral and economic problem. If the wealthy are unwilling to pay more taxes, then this is going to lead to spending cuts. And if you put off the table things like national defense, then you're going to end up cutting more and more out of programs that aid the poor. So, I think there are consequences to this idea that tolerance for inequality requires us to - to just do nothing to make the wealthy contribute a higher share of resources to fund the government. ~ Bruce Bartlett
Pietanza Bartlett quotes by Bruce Bartlett
I realized that the man I thought was stealing books so that others would consider him a cultured gentleman, the man who was building a phony image, a counterfeit identity, was in fact working diligently to become that gentleman. He was studying philosophy, researching authors, reading literature, even writing his own essays and plays. Through these efforts, he was attempting to create his ideal self. Another way of begetting this self, I came to understand, was by telling his story through me. ~ Allison Hoover Bartlett
Pietanza Bartlett quotes by Allison Hoover Bartlett
Winning has a joy and discrete purity to it that cannot be replaced by anything else. Winning is important to any man's or woman's sense of satisfaction and well-being. Winning is not everything; but it is something powerful, indeed beautiful, in itself, something as necessary to the strong spirit as striving is necessary to the healthy character. ~ A. Bartlett Giamatti
Pietanza Bartlett quotes by A. Bartlett Giamatti
The professionals must set a good example. ~ A. Bartlett Giamatti
Pietanza Bartlett quotes by A. Bartlett Giamatti
We have been cut off from our souls in the West, and because romantic love has become our religion, we think we can find fulfillment through this extraordinary and powerful force that draws us into an illusion of permanence. Passion makes us feel alive, makes us sing, makes us feel in touch with something powerful and wonderful, just as it would if we followed this meaning in life in a more spiritual practice. In the West it is often through such relationships, through another human being, that we search desperately for something, not knowing it is to be found within ourselves. ~ Sarah Bartlett
