We must make some effort, but we must forget ourselves in the effort we make ... So it is necessary for us to encourage ourselves and to make an effort up to the last moment, when all effort disappears. ~ Shunryu Suzuki
Mind Weeds quotes by Shunryu Suzuki
In the mind, weeds are negative self-defeating beliefs and ideas that repeat quietly, over and over again, unchallenged, until they seem to become self-evident truths. Yet these so-called truths, when brought to light and critically examined, simply fall apart in the midst of their own deceitful falsehood and absurdity. ~ Asoka Selvarajah
Mind Weeds quotes by Asoka Selvarajah
I've never been so conflicted in my life. My body is screaming yes, but my heart is crying no. My fingers itch to touch him and my lips part to meet him but my mind won't shut up long enough to let me give in. ~ Ellie Messe
Mind Weeds quotes by Ellie Messe
For with all that is grand, grander is the expansion of the mind. ~ Nancy B. Brewer
Mind Weeds quotes by Nancy B. Brewer
You think you are reading proof, whereas you are merely reading your own mind; your statement of the thing is full of holes & vacancies but you don't know it, because you are filling them from your mind as you go along. Sometimes
but not often enough
the printer's proof-reader saves you
& offends you
with this cold sign in the margin: (?) & you search the passage & find that the insulter is right
it doesn't say what you thought it did: the gas-fixtures are there, but you didn't light the jets ~ Mark Twain
Mind Weeds quotes by Mark Twain
I could not undertake to form a nucleus of an institution for the development of infant minds, where none already existed. It would be too cruel. ~ Henry David Thoreau
Mind Weeds quotes by Henry David Thoreau
Your mind is my treasure, and if it were broken, it would be my treasure still ~ Charlotte Bronte
Mind Weeds quotes by Charlotte Bronte
I am a feminist. I reject wholeheartedly the way we are taught to perceive women. The beauty of women, how a woman should act or behave. Women are strong and fragile. Women are beautiful and ugly. We are soft-spoken and loud, all at once. There is something mind-controlling about the way we're taught to view women. My work, both visually and musically, is a rejection of all those things. ~ Lady Gaga
Mind Weeds quotes by Lady Gaga
When it came to "getting away from it all," there really weren't many places quite like the top of the tallest mountain in the world. He glanced around the summit, noting the other reason why he enjoyed coming up here. It was tradition for every expedition to the top of Everest to leave something behind - a small token or marker indicating their successful climb to the famous peak. Each one was different and each one seemed to reflect the personality of the party it represented: small flags and banners with the hand-written names of climbers past, a used oxygen canister, a spare glove, even a small metal lunchbox with (Clark noted with a small smile) a picture of Superman on the cover. To Clark, each of these markers indicated the pinnacle of human achievement, the fulfilled promise of the best the human race had to offer. And today, it represented something else as well: man's ability to conquer the harsh reality of nature… a point in stark contrast to the previous night's activities.

This set were Sherpa prayer flags, each displaying a symbol, not of a distant god or mythological beast, but denoting some aspect of the enlightened human mind: compassion, perfect action, fearlessness. His thoughts turned to another example of the peak of human achievement, of what one man with drive, desire and dedication could accomplish without the benefit of superpowers or metagene enhancement. One that held a much more personal meaning to Clark.

Bruce. ~ Chris Dee
Mind Weeds quotes by Chris Dee
The moral, of course, is that you must always try to see other people's Point of View before you criticize anybody. Histories are crammed full of unkind things, silly things, and untrue things - why? Because so often the people who write them will not try to see or feel any Point of View but their own ... So mind that you always look out for the Point of View and help people to see yours, too, if you want them to understand you. ~ Katherine Paterson
Mind Weeds quotes by Katherine Paterson
love has nothing to do with moving on. I still have you in my heart, mind and thoughts. The only difference is you are not in my arms ~ Kiran Joshi
Mind Weeds quotes by Kiran Joshi
The connectivity of the heart and mind is wonderful solution to many of life's challenges. ~ Steven Redhead
Mind Weeds quotes by Steven Redhead
She had not given me the cross to keep the bad men away, as a child might have been expected to do. No, in her mind the bad men could not be kept away. They were coming, and they would have to be faced. ~ John Connolly
Mind Weeds quotes by John Connolly
Our western mind lacking all culture in this respect, has never yet devised a concept, not even a name for "the union of opposites through the middle path", that most fundamental item of inward experience which could respectably be set against the Chinese concept of Tao. ~ Carl Jung
Mind Weeds quotes by Carl Jung
The mind is complex and without discipline it can become your worst nightmare. ~ Daphne Michaels
Mind Weeds quotes by Daphne Michaels
I stopped smugly repeating 'Everything that can be thought at all can be thought clearly' and wondered anew, can everything be thought ~ Maggie Nelson
Mind Weeds quotes by Maggie Nelson
When the mind becomes quiet, you feel nourished. SWAMI CHIDVILASANANDA ~ Julia Cameron
Mind Weeds quotes by Julia Cameron
It was always important to me to be that kid who could rock the party as well as rock the English professor's mind. ~ Saul Williams
Mind Weeds quotes by Saul Williams
Eventually, meditation will make our mind calm, clear, and as concentrated as a laser which we can focus at will. This capacity of one-pointed attention is the essence of genius. When we have this mastery over attention in everything we do, we have a genius for life. ~ Eknath Easwaran
Mind Weeds quotes by Eknath Easwaran
Remember how long thou hast been putting off these things, and how often thou hast received an opportunity from the gods, and yet dost not use it. Thou must now at last perceive of what universe thou art a part, and of what administrator of the universe thy existence is an efflux, and that a limit of time is fixed for thee, which if thou dost not use for clearing away the clouds from thy mind, it will go and thou wilt go, and it will never return. ~ Marcus Aurelius
Mind Weeds quotes by Marcus Aurelius
I knew naturally as a child not to forfeit my creativity to a world that's all laid out for me. I'll look at everything around me and vow to keep in mind that alla this is just someone's idea. It could have just as well been mine. ~ Ani DiFranco
Mind Weeds quotes by Ani DiFranco
What is a logical mind? ... It is the antiseptic which destroys the bacilli of unreason whereby true happiness is vivified. ~ William John Locke
Mind Weeds quotes by William John Locke
When you are enlightened and have united your mind with the deepest and most ancient part of the mind of the universe, you are not affected by suffering the way other people are. ~ Frederick Lenz
Mind Weeds quotes by Frederick Lenz
What inflicts the mind, inflicts the body. What inflicts the soul inflicts the body. Physical wounds heal much quicker but spiritual, emotional and spiritual wounds takes much longer of healing. ~ Ann Marie Aguilar
Mind Weeds quotes by Ann Marie Aguilar
Cruel of heart, lay down my song. Your reading eyes have done me wrong. Not for you was the pen bitten, And the mind wrung, and the song written. ~ Edna St. Vincent Millay
Mind Weeds quotes by Edna St. Vincent Millay
Your brain with all its parts, exists to keep you safe, but your mind, with all your memories and intuition, exists to help you soar. ~ Toni Sorenson
Mind Weeds quotes by Toni Sorenson
The fundamental trouble with marriage is that it shakes a man's confidence in himself, and so greatly diminishes his general competence and effectiveness. His habit of mind becomes that of a commander who has lost a decisive and calamitous battle. He quite trusts himself thereafter. ~ H.L. Mencken
Mind Weeds quotes by H.L. Mencken
In seeking to understand this gendered difference in the perception of prisoners, it should be kept in mind that as the prison emerged and evolved as the major form of public punishment, women continued to be routinely subjected to forms of punishment that have not been acknowledged as such. For example, women have been incarcerated in psychiatric institutions in greater proportions than in prisons. 79 Studies indicating that women have been even more likely to end up in mental facilities than men suggest that while jails and prisons have been dominant institutions for the control of men, mental institutions have served a similar purpose for women. That deviant men have been constructed as criminal, while deviant women have been constructed as insane. Regimes that reflect this assumption continue to inform the women's prison. Psychiatric drugs continue to be distributed far more extensively to imprisoned women than to their male counterparts. ~ Angela Y. Davis
Mind Weeds quotes by Angela Y. Davis
I wait for Kayden to get back up, but he stays unmoving not even bothering to cover his face with his arms. His father kicks him in the stomach, in the face, his movements harder, showing no sign of an approaching end. I react without thinking, a desire to save him burning so fiercely it washes all doubts from my mind. ~ Jessica Sorensen
Mind Weeds quotes by Jessica Sorensen
I cannot squeeze the stars; but I can squeeze my mind to feel the moon compressed. ~ Munia Khan
Mind Weeds quotes by Munia Khan
Our attitudes toward human relationships are those of supermarket shoppers: we want what is cheap and quick and easy; we want variety; and we want novelty. But friendship requires a whole other set of mind. ~ Stuart Miller
Mind Weeds quotes by Stuart Miller
Never mind what you've heard. Halle Berry was not the first black woman to win an Academy Award for Best Actress. She was actually the 74th white one. And never mind all this talk about America electing its first black President; Barack Obama is actually the 44th white man to hold the job. ~ Jeffrey Kluger
Mind Weeds quotes by Jeffrey Kluger
There's no way to tell him, if she tried she knows she'd only start crying, that there's this girl in England who's never met him and never will and he's saved her life more times over than he'll ever know, because she knows Blackbindings - Blackbindings who writes like an angel, like she knows what suffering is and she knows how much knowing that matters, who writes so far beyond her years with the sort of control Draxie knows she'll never have - Blackbindings who is so shy she can barely bring herself to reblog anything, Blackbindings who just has one of the sweetest, quietest, kindest souls Draxie thinks she's ever known and the sort of brain chemistry that you fight every day of your life, she doesn't know if Blackbindings would still be here if it wasn't for him. If she was trapped in this world that breaks her heart and breaks her down, she doesn't know how long that girl would have lasted if she didn't think about him being brave for everyone else, caring about everyone else, maybe caring about her, trapped in her own mind an ocean away, using up all the strength she has just to not hurt herself. There are weeks when she cries every single day. And thinks about him, she says. And then she can make herself breathe. ~ Rainjoy
Mind Weeds quotes by Rainjoy
Daniel Levitin has more insights per page than any other neuroscientist I know. The organized Mind is smart, important, and, as always, exquisitely written. ~ Daniel Gilbert
Mind Weeds quotes by Daniel Gilbert
What, in fact, do we know about the peak experience? Well, to begin with, we know one thing that puts us several steps ahead of the most penetrating thinkers of the 19th century: that P.E'.s are not a matter of pure good luck or grace. They don't come and go as they please, leaving 'this dim, vast vale of tears vacant and desolate'. Like rainbows, peak experiences are governed by definite laws. They are 'intentional'.

And that statement suddenly gains in significance when we remember Thorndike's discovery that the effect of positive stimuli is far more powerful and far reaching than that of negative stimuli. His first statement of the law of effect was simply that situations that elicit positive reactions tend to produce continuance of positive reactions, while situations that elicit negative or avoidance reactions tend to produce continuance of these. It was later that he came to realise that positive reactions build-up stronger response patterns than negative ones. In other words, positive responses are more intentional than negative ones.

Which is another way of saying that if you want a positive reaction (or a peak experience), your best chance of obtaining it is by putting yourself into an active, purposive frame of mind. The opposite of the peak experience - sudden depression, fatigue, even the 'panic fear' that swept William James to the edge of insanity - is the outcome of passivity. This cannot be overemphasised. Depression - or neurosis - need ~ Colin Wilson
Mind Weeds quotes by Colin Wilson
Some superior minds are unrecognized because there is no standard by which to weigh them. ~ Joseph Joubert
Mind Weeds quotes by Joseph Joubert
Florence Dodson was murdered the same night that Claire Guthrie shot her husband. For me, the story began with Claire, and I put Mrs. Dodson on the back burner in my mind. That turned out to be a mistake. ~ Judy Alter
Mind Weeds quotes by Judy Alter
Something is happening in Memphis; something is happening in our world. And you know, if I were standing at the beginning of time, with the possibility of taking a kind of general and panoramic view of the whole of human history up to now, and the Almighty said to me, "Martin Luther King, which age would you like to live in?" I would take my mental flight by Egypt and I would watch God's children in their magnificent trek from the dark dungeons of Egypt through, or rather across the Red Sea, through the wilderness on toward the promised land. And in spite of its magnificence, I wouldn't stop there.

I would move on by Greece and take my mind to Mount Olympus. And I would see Plato, Aristotle, Socrates, Euripides and Aristophanes assembled around the Parthenon. And I would watch them around the Parthenon as they discussed the great and eternal issues of reality. But I wouldn't stop there.

I would go on, even to the great heyday of the Roman Empire. And I would see developments around there, through various emperors and leaders. But I wouldn't stop there.

I would even come up to the day of the Renaissance, and get a quick picture of all that the Renaissance did for the cultural and aesthetic life of man. But I wouldn't stop there.

I would even go by the way that the man for whom I am named had his habitat. And I would watch Martin Luther as he tacked his ninety-five theses on the door at the church of Wittenberg. But I wouldn't stop th ~ Martin Luther King Jr.
Mind Weeds quotes by Martin Luther King Jr.
Happiness is a state of non-contradictory joy
a joy without penalty or guilt, a joy that does not clash with any of your values and does not work for your own destruction, not the joy of escaping from your mind, but of using your mind's fullest power, not the joy of faking reality, but of achieving values that are real, not the joy of a drunkard, but of a producer. ~ Ayn Rand
