Margaret Feinberg quotes by Margaret Feinberg
Sometimes you have to poke holes in the darkness until it bleeds light. ~ Margaret Feinberg
Margaret Feinberg quotes by Margaret Feinberg
One of the greatest promises to a child of God is that this life is not the end of the story. ~ Margaret Feinberg
Margaret Feinberg quotes by Margaret Feinberg
God's wisdom, true wisdom, is essential to living the life we were designed to live. Apart from God and his wisdom, we can spend a lot of time and energy getting lost, or worse, asking for directions from people who only pretend to know the way. ~ Margaret Feinberg
Margaret Feinberg quotes by Margaret Feinberg
People today know a lot more about how to become a Christian than about how to be one. ~ Margaret Feinberg
Margaret Feinberg quotes by Margaret Feinberg
Joy would not deny the hardship, but would choose to acknowledge and face it no matter what the outcome. ~ Margaret Feinberg
Margaret Feinberg quotes by Margaret Feinberg
Most of us discover early on that it's safer to hide behind prayers that can't be measured, petitions so nebulous they don't require intervention from God. ~ Margaret Feinberg
Margaret Feinberg quotes by Margaret Feinberg
Leif's hands pressed on my shoulders, muscles turned ~ Margaret Feinberg
Margaret Feinberg quotes by Margaret Feinberg
Slowly, God is opening my eyes to needs all around me. In Scripture, God revisits this issue of caring for the poor- an echo that repeats itself from Genesis to Revelation. The Bible acknowledges that the poor will always be part of society, but God takes on their cause. The Mosaic law of the Old Testament is filled with regulations to prevent and eliminate poverty. The poor were given the right to glean- to take produce from the unharvested edges of the fields, a portion of the tithes, and a daily wage. The law prevented permanent slavery by releasing Jewish bondsmen and women on the sabbatical and Jubilee year and forbade charging interest on loans. In one of his most tender acts, God made sure that the poor- the aliens, widows, and orphans- were all invited to the feasts. ~ Margaret Feinberg
Margaret Feinberg quotes by Margaret Feinberg
Joy asks "What if God?" and declares "But if not! ~ Margaret Feinberg
Margaret Feinberg quotes by Margaret Feinberg
God is not merely at your fingertips but within your grasp. Live each day like a child digging through a treasure chest, rifling for the next discovery. Open your arms and your eyes to the God who stands in plain sight and works miracles in your midst. Look for him in your workdays and weekends, in your meeting-filled Mondays and your lazy Saturdays. Search for him in the snowy sunsets and Sabbaths, seasons of Lent and sitting at your table. Pray for - and expect - wonder. For when you search for God, you will discover him. ~ Margaret Feinberg
Margaret Feinberg quotes by Margaret Feinberg
God sits enthroned, ready to listen, to help. ~ Margaret Feinberg
Margaret Feinberg quotes by Margaret Feinberg
When journeying with God some of the best parts of any pilgrimage are the detours. ~ Margaret Feinberg
Margaret Feinberg quotes by Margaret Feinberg
Worry is a subtle way of telling God that He's fallen asleep at the wheel and that things aren't under His authority, but ours. ~ Margaret Feinberg
Margaret Feinberg quotes by Margaret Feinberg
Many of us say we want to experience God, but we don't look for his majesty. [Tweet this] We travel life's paths with our heads down, focused on the next step with our careers or families or retirement plans. But we don't really expect God to show up with divine wonder. ~ Margaret Feinberg
Margaret Feinberg quotes by Margaret Feinberg
I call them sacred echoes because I noticed that throughout my relationships, daily life, and study, the same scripturally sound idea or phrase or word will keep reappearing until I can no longer avoid its presence. -The Sacred Echo ~ Margaret Feinberg
Margaret Feinberg quotes by Margaret Feinberg
Create your own permission slip for joy. Write three words: Accept. Adapt. Depend. Carry this permission slip with you. Tell your friends you're working on becoming more content, more joyful. Take a nap. Live with a messy house for a time. Order takeout. File an extension on your taxes. Stare out the window. Linger in the company of a friend. Breathe in the fullness of life. Use those words to fight back with joy. ~ Margaret Feinberg
Margaret Feinberg quotes by Margaret Feinberg
Whenever God thinks of you, he has your best interests in mind; he has plans to take you further, deeper, and higher than you ever dreamed. This process begins when you seek God and spend time with him. Look for every opportunity to know God. Consider your daily schedule. What does it include? A workout at the gym? A trip to the post office? A lunch hour? A commute? Look for ways to include God in your activities. Invite God to accompany you by talking together. Look for moments- even if it's only ten or twenty seconds- to steal away with him. God will reward your efforts as you reshape your inner life to be focused around him. As you seek God, you will find yourself abiding in him. -Hungry for God ~ Margaret Feinberg
Margaret Feinberg quotes by Margaret Feinberg
Hunger for God compels us to seek the Lord. At times our desire for God overcomes our physical desires, and the ache for God is palpable. Throughout the Scriptures, God is faithful to reward those who search for him. Written during one of King David's low points, while living on the run in the wilderness, he cries, "Oh God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you, in a dry and weary land where there is no water." Though David hides in the wilderness, he doesn't stay there physically or spiritually. When we seek God with our whole hearts and souls, he promises to reveal himself to us." -Hungry for God ~ Margaret Feinberg
Margaret Feinberg quotes by Margaret Feinberg
Jesus knew that many of his listeners believed the old wineskin (or way of doing things) was good enough. They were comfortable with their beliefs and practices, but Jesus hadn't come to patch up old religious traditions. He was offering a new garment, a new wineskin, a way of life that didn't abolish the old ways, but fulfilled them.

The teaching illuminated my own need to remain pliable before God. I realize that I must have a softer housing for my growing faith, one that can flex and change as God is at work inside of me. All too often I find myself clinging to that which is comfortable and familiar, rather than embracing the challenges that emerge with change and growth. Sometimes I shy away from people who have strong views that differ from mine, even though sharing a great conversation... could temper both our viewpoints and deepen our relationship. Why do I run away from strong opinions and potential conflict? Am I too comfortable and unwilling to change? Such a realization highlights the need for the Spirit in my life not just to discern and distinguish, but also to illuminate and invite me to move forward into the fullness of life with him." -Scouting the Divine ~ Margaret Feinberg
Margaret Feinberg quotes by Margaret Feinberg
The seventh day of creation is the most eloquent and insightful as to the nature of God. From a literary perspective, the Sabbath forms the pinnacle of the story. Like the dramatic kiss of a soldier returning from war, this is the moment we're not meant to miss. In choosing rest as the grand finale, God reveals himself as one driven by neither anxiety nor fear but one who finds gladness in both the work of creation and the creation of work. ~ Margaret Feinberg
Margaret Feinberg quotes by Margaret Feinberg
Always remain suspicious that God is up to something good. ~ Margaret Feinberg
Margaret Feinberg quotes by Margaret Feinberg
God is constantly on the move. I cannot stay where I am and follow God at the same time; responding requires movement. ~ Margaret Feinberg
Margaret Feinberg quotes by Margaret Feinberg
As we come to the end of ourselves, we open the door to discovering the One who created us anew. The One who can whisper to us who we really are as we pilgrim toward our truest and deepest selves. ~ Margaret Feinberg
Margaret Feinberg quotes by Margaret Feinberg
While some dismiss the Bible as a dusty old book, I view its pages as portals to adventure. Not only is the book chock-full of clever plots and compelling stories, but it's laced with historical insights and literary beauty. When I open the Scripture, I imagine myself exploring an ancient kingdom ... With every encounter, I learn something new about their life journeys and am reminded that the Bible is more than a record of the human quest for God: it's the revelation of God's quest for us. - Scouting the Divine ~ Margaret Feinberg
Margaret Feinberg quotes by Margaret Feinberg
Sometimes we need to give space for grief in order to make room for joy. No one is immune to sorrow, and only those who learn to grieve well can recapture the healing it brings.

Just as light needs darkness, so joy needs grief. ~ Margaret Feinberg
Margaret Feinberg quotes by Margaret Feinberg
Why describe God as organic? More and more I realize that my own understanding of God is largely polluted. I have preconceived notions, thoughts and biases when it comes to God. I have a tendency to favor certain portions of Scripture over others. I have a bad habit of reading some stories with a been-there-done-that attitude, knowing the end of the story before it begins, and in the process denying God's ability to speak to me through it once again.
... The result is that my understanding and perception of God is clouded, much like the dingy haze of pollution that hands over most major cities. The person in the middle of a city looking up at the sky doesn't aways realize just how much their view and perceptions are altered by the smog. Without symptoms such as burning eyes or an official warning of scientists or media, no one may even notice just how bad the pollution has become.
That's why I describe God as organic. ~ Margaret Feinberg
Margaret Feinberg quotes by Margaret Feinberg
Prayer might not change things, but it will change my perspective of things. Prayer might not change the past, but inevitably, it changes the present. ~ Margaret Feinberg
Margaret Feinberg quotes by Margaret Feinberg
Fathers are biological necessities, but social accidents. ~ Margaret Mead
Margaret Feinberg quotes by Margaret Mead
Hope throws a smokescreen. Smoke gets in your eyes and so no one is prepared for it, but suddenly it;s there, like an out-of-control bonfire - like murder, only multiplied. It's in full spate. ~ Margaret Atwood
Margaret Feinberg quotes by Margaret Atwood
It's the end of the world every day, for someone. ~ Margaret Atwood
Margaret Feinberg quotes by Margaret Atwood
The anthropologist Margaret Mead concluded in 1948, after observing seven different ethnic groups in the Pacific Islands, that different cultures made different forms of female sexual experience seem normal and desirable. The capacity for orgasm in women, she found, is a learned response, which a given culture can help or can fail to help its women to develop. Mead believed that a woman's sexual fulfillment, and the positive meaning of her sexuality in her own mind, depend upon three factors:
1: She must live in a culture that recognizes female desire as being of value;
2: Her culture must allow her to understand her sexual anatomy;
3: And her culture must teach the various sexual skills that give women orgasms. ~ Naomi Wolf
Margaret Feinberg quotes by Naomi Wolf
I do have a life,' says Charis, blinking wet eyes.

'You have a rich inner life,' says Tony firmly. 'More than most. ~ Margaret Atwood
Margaret Feinberg quotes by Margaret Atwood
No Western nation has to build a wall round itself to keep its people in. ~ Margaret Thatcher
Margaret Feinberg quotes by Margaret Thatcher
The Fall was ongoing, but its trajectory led ever downward. Sucked ~ Margaret Atwood
Margaret Feinberg quotes by Margaret Atwood
A book may outlive its author, and it moves too, and it too can be said to change - but not in the manner of the telling. It changes in the manner of the reading. As many commentators have remarked, works of literature are recreated by each generation of readers, who make them new by finding fresh meanings in them. The printed text of a book is thus like a musical score, which is not itself music, but becomes music when played by musicians, or "interpreted" by them, as we say. The act of reading a text is like playing music and listening to it at the same time, and the reader becomes its own interpreter. ~ Margaret Atwood
Margaret Feinberg quotes by Margaret Atwood
Law and order is a social service. Crime and the fear which the threat of crime induces can paralyse whole communities, keep lonely and vulnerable elderly people shut up in their homes, scar young lives and raise to cult status the swaggering violent bully who achieves predatory control over the streets. I suspect that there would be more support and less criticism than today's political leaders imagine for a large shift of resources from Social Security benefits to law and order - as long as rhetoric about getting tough on crime was matched by practice. ~ Margaret Thatcher
Margaret Feinberg quotes by Margaret Thatcher
There are 100 ways to react to spilled milk. Your chance to show love. ~ Margaret Aranda
Margaret Feinberg quotes by Margaret Aranda
We have nowhere else to go ... this is all we have. ~ Margaret Mead
Margaret Feinberg quotes by Margaret Mead
Boy meets girl. Boy marries girl. Boy and girl angst over which family they visit at Thanksgiving and which one in December and whether or not it's best to serve turkey or goose for the family feast. When first faced with the reality that the family you married into does things differently, the warmth of tradition can take on a chill. ~ Margaret Kennedy
Margaret Feinberg quotes by Margaret Kennedy
The way I teach people to sing ... I have them talk the lyric out until it sounds like something they really believe, like an actor with a monologue. ~ Margaret Whiting
Margaret Feinberg quotes by Margaret Whiting
Well, love don't count one rass unless it's a verb. ~ Margaret Cezair-Thompson
Margaret Feinberg quotes by Margaret Cezair-Thompson
Good God, the lad is a lass! ~ Margaret Mallory
Margaret Feinberg quotes by Margaret Mallory
Whatever advantages may have arisen, in the past, out of the existence of a specially favored and highly privileged aristocracy, it is clear to me that today no argument can stand that supports unequal opportunity or any intrinsic disqualification for sharing in the whole of life. ~ Margaret Mead
Margaret Feinberg quotes by Margaret Mead
Upstairs Margaret said abruptly, 'I suppose it starts to happen first in the suburbs,' and when Brad said, 'What starts to happen?' she said hysterically, 'People starting to come apart. ~ Shirley Jackson
Margaret Feinberg quotes by Shirley Jackson
I have always had a dread of becoming a passenger in life. ~ Princess Margaret
Margaret Feinberg quotes by Princess Margaret
As for plenty, we had not only for necessity, conveniency and decency, but for delight and pleasure to superfluity. ~ Margaret Cavendish
Margaret Feinberg quotes by Margaret Cavendish
Don't tell lies, ever. No matter what - not even little white lies. ~ Margaret Keane
Margaret Feinberg quotes by Margaret Keane
I defied nothing at all. I ignored the law because I didn't know it existed. It didn't occur to me that anyone would want to curb my inspiration. ~ Margaret Anderson
Margaret Feinberg quotes by Margaret Anderson
Your baby can double as a lawn mower. ~ Margaret Atwood
Margaret Feinberg quotes by Margaret Atwood
The ability to learn is older as it is also more widespread than is the ability to teach. ~ Margaret Mead
Margaret Feinberg quotes by Margaret Mead
It is rather calming to remember that you really couldn't have foreseen what is happening to you. ~ Margaret Widdemer
Margaret Feinberg quotes by Margaret Widdemer
Here was a corporation behaving like a monster though the individuals who owned its stock were human cultivated men. A corporation has no soul. ~ Margaret Case Harriman
Margaret Feinberg quotes by Margaret Case Harriman
Servitude is inherent; we are all slaves to duty or to force. ~ Margaret Of Valois
Margaret Feinberg quotes by Margaret Of Valois
For the rest of her life, Jackie wouldn't forget that comment. She and her daddy weren't as close as they had been, and she felt a pang in her chest whenever she saw him with Sybil, but most of that jealousy was mitigated by T.C. When she had the baby, she realized how much a parent loved a child, and she assumed her father's feelings for her were at least as sturdy. Because of that perspective, all this time she had also assumed that when he asked her how she was doing, when he drove her car to the lot for oil changes, moved her furniture, stopped by unannounced, and paid her light bill, that there was nothing else in the world he'd rather be doing. In reality though he'd been building up anger with every check he signed, every mile he drove, and the last thing she wanted was a favor laced in resentment. She waited for her mam to cut in with a word that might coat the ferocity of what had just been said, but there was only silence, a heavy resolve as though Jackie were the one who needed to explain, as if she would do anything differently if the circumstances tumbled into her lap again. ~ Margaret Wilkerson Sexton
Margaret Feinberg quotes by Margaret Wilkerson Sexton
I love books. I really, really love them. There's something special about bringing people and books together ~ Margaret Truman
Margaret Feinberg quotes by Margaret Truman
Margaret Thatcher was fearful of German unification because she believed that this would bring an immediate and formidable increase of economic strength to a Germany which was already the strongest economic partner in Europe. ~ Douglas Hurd
Margaret Feinberg quotes by Douglas Hurd
It's like how science fiction in the '50s was a way of talking about war without actually having to risk any political capital. The obvious metaphor is power and powerlessness, but I also think it's a way of experimenting with dangerous feelings in a safe arena and trying things out. ~ Margaret Stohl
Margaret Feinberg quotes by Margaret Stohl
We are always tortured by our memory of the last time we were with anyone, what we said, what we did not say ... ~ Margaret George
Margaret Feinberg quotes by Margaret George
Imagination is the first faculty wanting in those that do harm to their kind ... ~ Margaret Oliphant
Margaret Feinberg quotes by Margaret Oliphant
There are some remarkable parallels between basketball and politics. Michael Jordan has already mastered the skill most needed for political success: how to stay aloft without visible means of support. ~ Margaret Thatcher
Margaret Feinberg quotes by Margaret Thatcher
Make up your mind to this. If you are different, you are isolated, not only from people of your own age but from those of your parents' generation and from your children's generation too. They'll never understand you and they'll be shocked no matter what you do. But your grandparents would probably be proud of you and say: 'Theres a chip off the old block,' and your grandchildren will sigh enviously and say: 'What an old rip Grandma must have been!' and they'll try to be like you. ~ Margaret Mitchell
Margaret Feinberg quotes by Margaret Mitchell
Take a pencil to write with on aeroplanes. Pens leak. But if the pencil breaks, you can't sharpen it on the plane, because you can't take knives with you. Therefore: take two pencils. ~ Margaret Atwood
Margaret Feinberg quotes by Margaret Atwood
It was easier to ignore the consideration of paternal genes then than it would be now. We did not then consider ourselves held in the genetic trap. We thought each infant was born pure and new and holy: a gold baby, a luminous lamb. We did not know that certain forms of breast cancer were programmed and almost ineluctable, and we would not have believed you if you had told us that in our lifetime young women would be subjecting themselves to preventative mastectomies. ~ Margaret Drabble
