Question- Should I loan a small amount of money to a friend? Answer- If you are sure that you can, if necessary, spare both. ~ Judith Martin
Judith Glaser quotes by Judith Martin
From an interview with Susie Bright:

SB: You were recently reviewed by the New York Times. How do you think the mainstream media regards sex museums, schools and cultural centers these days? What's their spin versus your own observations?

[Note: Here's the article Susie mentions: http://www.nytimes.com/2005/12/05/nat... ]

CQ: Lots of people have seen the little NY Times article, which was about an event we did, the Belle Bizarre Bazaar -- a holiday shopping fair where most of the vendors were sex workers selling sexy stuff. Proceeds went to our Exotic Dancers' Education Project, providing dancers with skills that will help them maximize their potential and choices. This event got into the Times despite the worries of its author, a journalist who'd been posted over by her editor. She thought the Times was way too conservative for the likes of us, which may be true, except they now have so many column inches to fill with distracting stuff that isn't about Judith Miller!

The one thing the Times article does not do is present the spectrum of the Center for Sex & Culture's work, especially the academic and serious side of what we do. This, I think, points to the real answer to your question: mainstream media culture remains quite nervous and touchy about sex-related issues, especially those that take sex really seriously. A frivolous take (or a good, juicy, shocking angle) on a sex story works for the mainstream press: a sex-positive ~ Carol Queen

I'm a lousy journalist. ~ Judith Rossner
Judith Glaser quotes by Judith Rossner
I was starting to think of her as the "Goth Van Gogh" on a good day or "Vampira" on a bad one. She took a little getting used to. ~ Judith Fertig
Judith Glaser quotes by Judith Fertig
When one set of Jews labels another set of Jews 'anti-Semitic,' they are trying to monopolize the right to speak in the name of the Jews. So the allegation of anti-Semitism is actually a cover for an intra-Jewish quarrel. ~ Judith Butler
Judith Glaser quotes by Judith Butler
Wisdom can see the red, the rose, the stained and sculptured curve of grey, the charcoal scars of fire, and see around that living tower of tree the hermit tatters of old bark split down and strip to end the season; and can be quiet and not look for reasons past the edge of reason. ~ Judith Wright
Judith Glaser quotes by Judith Wright
There are three possible parts to a date, of which at least two must be offered: entertainment, food, and affection. It is customary to begin a series of dates with a great deal of entertainment, a moderate amount of food, and the merest suggestion of affection. As the amount of affection increases, the entertainment can be reduced proportionately. When the affection IS the entertainment, we no longer call it dating. Under no circumstances can the food be omitted. ~ Judith Martin
Judith Glaser quotes by Judith Martin
she'd only looked at him for a second before she'd walked out of the woods, Jenny had registered the odd light in his eyes and ~ Judith McNaught
Judith Glaser quotes by Judith McNaught
Snowbound up here with you. Without books or business to occupy my time, I wonder what I'll do," he added with a leer.
She blushed gorgeously, but her voice was serious as she studied his face. "If things hadn't gone so well for you-if you hadn't accumulated so much wealth-you could have been happy up here, couldn't you?"
"With you?"
"Of course."
His smile was as somber as hers. "Absolutely."
"Although," he added, linking her hands behind her back and drawing her a little closer, "you may not want to remain up here when you learn your emeralds are back in their cases at Montmayne."
Her head snapped up, and her eyes shone with love and relief. "I'm so glad. When I realized Robert's story had been fabrication, it hurt beyond belief to realize I'd sold them."
"It's going to hurt more," he teased outrageously, "when you realize your bank draft to cover their cost was a little bit short. It cost me $45,000 to buy back the pieces that had already been sold, and $5,000 to buy the rest back from the jeweler you sold them to."
"That-that unconscionable thief!" she burst out. "He only gave me $5,000 for all of them!" She shook her head in despair at Ian's lack of bargaining prowess. "He took dreadful advantage of you."
"I wasn't concerned, however," Ian continued teasing, enjoying himself hugely, "because I knew I'd get it all back out of your allowance. With interest, of course. According to my figures," he said, pausing to calculate in his ~ Judith McNaught
Judith Glaser quotes by Judith McNaught
Relationships carry the whole universe within them. They can be everything, nothing, here, then gone. One moment, loving someone makes you shine; the next, it feels like matter and antimatter colliding. ~ Judith Orloff
Judith Glaser quotes by Judith Orloff
THE ORDINARY RESPONSE TO ATROCITIES is to banish them from consciousness. Certain violations of the social compact are too terrible to utter aloud: this is the meaning of the word unspeakable.
Atrocities, however, refuse to be buried. ~ Judith Lewis Herman
Judith Glaser quotes by Judith Lewis Herman
President Grover Cleveland issued an executive order in 1895 regarding entrance to the Foreign Service. Potential candidates were required to pass two examinations, one written and the other oral, to measure an applicant's knowledge and understanding on a range of subjects deemed necessary for the position. The written examination included essay questions about international law, arithmetic, modern history, resources and commerce of the United States, political and commercial geography, political economy, and American history and institutions. ~ Judith L. Pearson
Judith Glaser quotes by Judith L. Pearson
A man in cahoots with a woman's sexual instinct was the devil himself, for he had the united power over her - himself and her own longing - greater than a mere man ~ Judith Ivory
Judith Glaser quotes by Judith Ivory
Depression is not sobbing and crying and giving vent, it is plain and simple reduction of feeling. ~ Judith Guest
Judith Glaser quotes by Judith Guest
Repetition is the mute language of the abused child. ~ Judith Lewis Herman
Judith Glaser quotes by Judith Lewis Herman
I've been a printmaker and designed objects. I've done 500 posters. ~ Milton Glaser
Judith Glaser quotes by Milton Glaser
It's not the burden of your mate or anyone else to heal your emotional issues. ~ Judith Orloff
Judith Glaser quotes by Judith Orloff
Standing at the window overlooking the lawn, Jordan and Alexandra Townsende watched the couple heading toward them. "If you'd asked me to name the last man on earth I would have expected to fall head over heels for a slip of a girl, it would have been Ian Thornton," he told her.
His wife heard that with a sidewise look of extreme amusement. "If I'd been asked, I rather think I would have named you."
"I'm sure you would have," he said, grinning. He saw her smile fade, and he put his arm around her waist, instantly concerned that her pregnancy was causing her discomfort. "Is it the babe, darling?"
She burst out laughing and shook her head, but she sobered again almost instantly. "Do you think," she asked pensively, "he can be trusted not to hurt her? He's done so much damage that I-I just cannot like him, Jordan. He's handsome, I'll grant you that, extraordinarily handsome-"
"Not that handsome," Jordan said, stung. And this time Alexandra dissolved in mirth. Turning, she wrapped her arms around him and kissed him soundly. "Actually, he rather reminds me of you," she said, "in his coloring and height and build."
"I hope that hasn't anything to do with why you can't like him," her husband teased.
"Jordan, do stop. I'm worried, really I am. He's-well, he almost frightens me. Even though he seems very civilized on the surface, there's a forcefulness, maybe even a ruthlessness beneath his polished manners. And he stops at nothing when he wants something ~ Judith McNaught
Judith Glaser quotes by Judith McNaught
People use people according to their own needs. Or don't use them. When a primary need is one of safety. ~ Judith Guest
Judith Glaser quotes by Judith Guest
You only trust those who are absolutely like yourself, those who have signed a pledge of allegiance to this particular identity. ~ Judith Butler
Judith Glaser quotes by Judith Butler
Trying to force things only disturbs your goals. Forcing will not help. Everything happens in its right time. ~ Judith Orloff
Judith Glaser quotes by Judith Orloff
That baby is small,' observed the bald guy, who sat to the right of Jamie.

He nodded, thinking, small but lethal. ~ Judith Arnold
Judith Glaser quotes by Judith Arnold
If it will reassure you that I'm not a coward, I suppose I could rearrange his face." Quietly he added, "The music has ended," and for the first time Elizabeth realized they were no longer waltzing but were only swaying lightly together. With no other excuse to stand in his arms, Elizabeth tried to ignore her disappointment and step back, but just then the musicians began another melody, and their bodies began to move together in perfect time to the music.
"Since I've already deprived you of your escort for the outing to the village tomorrow," he said after a minute, "would you consider an alternative?"
Her heart soared, because she thought he was going to offer to escort her himself. Again he read her thoughts, but his words were dampening.
"I cannot escort you there," he said flatly.
Her smile faded. "Why not?"
"Don't be a henwit. Being seen in my company is hardly the sort of thing to enhance a debutante's reputation."
Her mind whirled, trying to tally some sort of balance sheet that would disprove his claim. After all, he was a favorite of the Duke of Hammund's…but while the duke was considered a great matrimonial prize, his reputation as a libertine and rake made mamas fear him as much as they coveted him as a son-in-law. On the other hand, Charise Dumont was considered perfectly respectable by the ton, and so this country gathering was above reproach. Except it wasn't, according to Lord Howard. "Is that why you refused to dance with me when ~ Judith McNaught

Greece is a good place for rebirths. ~ Judith Martin
Judith Glaser quotes by Judith Martin
Lisa, have you ever met anyone and then known within minutes that he's the most special person you're ever going to meet in your life? ~ Judith McNaught
Judith Glaser quotes by Judith McNaught
That is God's way. He upsets everything and loves to annoy the vain most of all. ~ Judith Merkle Riley
Judith Glaser quotes by Judith Merkle Riley
Party action should follow, not precede the creation of a dominant popular sentiment. ~ Judith Ellen Foster
Judith Glaser quotes by Judith Ellen Foster
Very softly as he nuzzled her, his mouth near her ear, he began to sing: I'm so happy with you, la, la ... ~ Judith Ivory
Judith Glaser quotes by Judith Ivory
The League of Independent Theater represents a coming together of actual artistic and theatrical forces that may yet undo the difficulty of our times in maintaining the highest artistic standards in a period of economic crisis. Who can save us from the downhill trend of our economy except the vigor of our arts? Theatre, music and education are our only hopes to lift our times beyond their despair and create a viable, prosperous culture. ~ Judith Malina
Judith Glaser quotes by Judith Malina
The code of the National Association of Broadcasters enunciates as a cardinal principle in American radio the provision of time by stations, without charge, for the presentation of public questions of a controversial nature. At the same time, it advises against the sale of time for the presentation of controversial issues except in the case of political broadcasts during political campaigns. The basic foundation for the prohibition against the sale of time for the presentation of controversial issues is the public duty of broadcasters to present such issues, regardless of the willingness of others to pay for their presentation. If time were sold for that purpose, it would have to be sold to all with the ability to pay, and as a result the advantage in any discussion would rest largely with those having the greater financial means to buy broadcasting time. ~ Judith C. Waller
Judith Glaser quotes by Judith C. Waller
He opened the box and saw a tiny cake shaped like a bird's nest in three small round layers of tender, browned-butter vanilla cake with an apricot filling. A "nest" border of piped rum and mocha buttercream enclosed a clutch of pale blue marzipan eggs and a sugar-paste feather. The complicated yin and yang of rum and mocha, the "everybody loves" vanilla, Mr. Social white chocolate, tart and witty apricot, and artistic marzipan- all said "Gavin" to me. ~ Judith Fertig
Judith Glaser quotes by Judith Fertig
The way one was brought up isn't an excuse for rude behavior. ~ Judith Martin
Judith Glaser quotes by Judith Martin
Yes – But – Well, it is yours to choose. I do not force anyone. Is it a hard choice?"
"No-o." Judith shook her head. "Except that I do not know which to choose. ~ Jane Gaskell
Judith Glaser quotes by Jane Gaskell
A general rule of etiquette is that one apologizes for the unfortunate occurrence, but the unthinkable is unmentionable. ~ Judith Martin
