When I began my physical studies [in Munich in 1874] and sought advice from my venerable teacher Philipp von Jolly ... he portrayed to me physics as a highly developed, almost fully matured science ... Possibly in one or another nook there would perhaps be a dust particle or a small bubble to be examined and classified, but the system as a whole stood there fairly secured, and theoretical physics approached visibly that degree of perfection which, for example, geometry has had already for centuries. ~ Max Planck
Johann Philipp Gustav Von Jolly quotes by Max Planck
These are the experiences I wish to record in this book, which should really be called The Diary of a Palaeontologist. But in committing them to paper I found it advisable to alter and add a good deal, to enable the reader without specialized training to follow me along the winding paths of palaeontology and prehistory. ~ Gustav Heinrich Ralph Von Koenigswald
Johann Philipp Gustav Von Jolly quotes by Gustav Heinrich Ralph Von Koenigswald
Man's greatness does not consist in being different from the animals that share the earth with him, but in being ... conscious of things of which his environment has no inkling. ~ Gustav Heinrich Ralph Von Koenigswald
Johann Philipp Gustav Von Jolly quotes by Gustav Heinrich Ralph Von Koenigswald
Greater Germany - the dream of our fathers and grandfathers - is finally created. ~ Gustav Krupp Von Bohlen Und Halbach
Johann Philipp Gustav Von Jolly quotes by Gustav Krupp Von Bohlen Und Halbach
Man did not address his inquiries to the earth on which he stood until a remarkably late stage in the development of his desire for knowledge. And the answers he received to the questions, "Where do I come from?", "What is man?", although they made him poorer by a few illusions, gave him in compensation a knowledge of his past that is vaster than he could ever have dreamed. For it emerged that the history of life was his history too ... ~ Gustav Heinrich Ralph Von Koenigswald
Johann Philipp Gustav Von Jolly quotes by Gustav Heinrich Ralph Von Koenigswald
The horse does not eat cucumber salad ~ Johann Philipp Reis
Johann Philipp Gustav Von Jolly quotes by Johann Philipp Reis
Chemistry is the dirty part of physics. ~ Johann Philipp Reis
Johann Philipp Gustav Von Jolly quotes by Johann Philipp Reis

In meinem Lieben, in meinem Lied.

I am lost to the world
with which I used to waste so much time,
It has heard nothing from me for so long
that it may very well believe that I am dead!

It is of no consequence to me
Whether it thinks me dead;
I cannot deny it,
for I really am dead to the world.

I am dead to the world's tumult,
And I rest in a quiet realm!
I live alone in my heaven,
In my love and in my song. ~ Gustav Mahler
Johann Philipp Gustav Von Jolly quotes by Gustav Mahler
She closed Dan's door and walked down the hall to her room. He makes a good boyfriend, she repeated to herself. What the hell was that suppose to mean? She didn't just want a good boyfriend. She wanted that thing Gustav Klimt had captured so perfectly in The Kiss. That radiant, electric, hold-me-tight-so-I don't-fall-from-up-here-in-the-sky feeling of being in love.
Well, don't we all, sweetie? ~ Cecily Von Ziegesar
Johann Philipp Gustav Von Jolly quotes by Cecily Von Ziegesar
The Kaiser Wilhelm Institute's eugenics studies were initially endowed by Gustav Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach, the head of the Krupp munitions monolith, and James Loeb, of the Kuhn-Loeb banking family. Loeb's relatives, the Warburgs, were banking partners of William Rockefeller, and both families were responsible for setting up the American Harriman family - also movers and shakers in eugenics - in business. ~ Jim Keith
Johann Philipp Gustav Von Jolly quotes by Jim Keith
But first Hitler, taken in by Mussolini's mythmaking, attempted a "march" of his own. On November 8, 1923, during a nationalist rally in a Munich beer hall, the Bürgerbräukeller, Hitler attempted to kidnap the leaders of the Bavarian government and force them to support a coup d'état against the federal government in Berlin. He believed that if he took control of Munich and declared a new national government, the Bavarian civil and military leaders would be forced by public opinion to support him. He was equally convinced that the local army authorities would not oppose the Nazi coup because the World War I hero General Ludendorff was marching beside him.

Hitler underestimated military fidelity to the chain of command. The conservative Bavarian minister-president Gustav von Kahr gave orders to stop Hitler's coup, by force if necessary. The police fired on the Nazi marchers on November 9 as they approached a major square (possibly returning a first shot from Hitler's side). Fourteen putschists and four policemen were killed. Hitler was arrested and imprisoned,8 along with other Nazis and their sympathizers. The august General Ludendorff was released on his own recognizance. Hitler's "Beer Hall Putsch" was thus put down so ignominiously by the conservative rulers of Bavaria that he resolved never again to try to gain power through force. That meant remaining at least superficially within constitutional legality, though the Nazis never gave up the selective violence t ~ Robert O. Paxton
Johann Philipp Gustav Von Jolly quotes by Robert O. Paxton
Nothing is so irretrievably missed as an opportunity we encounter every day. ~ Marie Von Ebner-Eschenbach
Johann Philipp Gustav Von Jolly quotes by Marie Von Ebner-Eschenbach
I am the spirit of perpetual negation. (Mephistopheles) ~ Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe
Johann Philipp Gustav Von Jolly quotes by Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe
Local differences in the prices of commodities whose natures are technologically identical are to be explained on the one hand by differences in the cost of preparing them for consumption (expenses of transport, cost of retailing etc.) and on the other hand by the physical and legal obstacles that restrict the mobility of commodities and human beings. ~ Ludwig Von Mises
Johann Philipp Gustav Von Jolly quotes by Ludwig Von Mises
Generally speaking, it is no longer the ambition of monarchs which endangers peace; but the impulses of a nation, its dissatisfaction with its internal conditions, the strife of parties and the intrigues of their leaders. A declaration of war, so serious in its consequences, is more easily carried by a large assembly, of which no one of the members bears the sole responsibility, than by a single individual, however lofty his position; and a peace-loving sovereign is less rare than a parliament composed of wise men. The great wars of recent times have been declared against the wish and will of the reigning powers. Now-a-days ~ Helmuth Von Moltke
Johann Philipp Gustav Von Jolly quotes by Helmuth Von Moltke
The task of the political philosopher can only be to influence public opinion, not to organize people for action. He will do so effectively only if he is not concerned with what is now politically possible but consistently defends the "general principles which are always the same." In this sense I doubt whether there can be such a thing as a conservative political philosophy. Conservatism may often be a useful practical maxim, but it does not give us any guiding principles which can influence long-range developments. ~ Friedrich August Von Hayek
Johann Philipp Gustav Von Jolly quotes by Friedrich August Von Hayek
The more one knows, the more one comprehends, the more one realizes that everything turns in a circle. ~ Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe
Johann Philipp Gustav Von Jolly quotes by Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe
I find it very hard to take myself seriously. ~ Max Von Sydow
Johann Philipp Gustav Von Jolly quotes by Max Von Sydow
It is the special province of music to move the heart. ~ Johann Sebastian Bach
Johann Philipp Gustav Von Jolly quotes by Johann Sebastian Bach
But the valid issue is the extent to which man knows how to form and master the material at his command. ~ Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe
Johann Philipp Gustav Von Jolly quotes by Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe
It is indeed one of the principal drawbacks of every kind of interventionism that it is so difficult to reverse the process. ~ Ludwig Von Mises
Johann Philipp Gustav Von Jolly quotes by Ludwig Von Mises
I bought some books in order to learn the first principles of philosophy. ~ Johann Heinrich Lambert
Johann Philipp Gustav Von Jolly quotes by Johann Heinrich Lambert
That's the problem with best friends. Sometimes they know you better than you know yourself. ~ Cecily Von Ziegesar
Johann Philipp Gustav Von Jolly quotes by Cecily Von Ziegesar
A little is fine, but the minute you start believing that you've picked the only right one out of the 4,200 or so on offer, you need to get a grip on yourself. Once you start thinking that it's okay to hate someone that chose one of the 4,199 others ... snap out of it. ~ Arthur M. Jolly
Johann Philipp Gustav Von Jolly quotes by Arthur M. Jolly
If I should come out of this war alive, I will have more luck than brains. ~ Manfred Von Richthofen
Johann Philipp Gustav Von Jolly quotes by Manfred Von Richthofen
For precisely when concepts fail one,
Words are found at the right time. ~ Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe
Johann Philipp Gustav Von Jolly quotes by Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe
Faith's table is always laid, whether the invited guest sits down or stays away with a thousand excuses and pretexts. ~ Hans Urs Von Balthasar
Johann Philipp Gustav Von Jolly quotes by Hans Urs Von Balthasar
The field of experience is the whole universe in all directions. Theory remains shut up within the limits of human faculties. ~ Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe
Johann Philipp Gustav Von Jolly quotes by Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe
The things I know, every man can know, but, oh, my heart is mine alone! ~ Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe
Johann Philipp Gustav Von Jolly quotes by Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe
I like styling girls that don't normally dress in vintage clothes and don't normally wear red lipstick; I like seeing those kind of girls restyled in a retro way. ~ Dita Von Teese
Johann Philipp Gustav Von Jolly quotes by Dita Von Teese
The Hegelian babble about the real being the true is therefore the same kind of confusion as when people assume that the words and actions of a poet's dramatic characters are the poet's own. We must, however, hold fast to the belief that when God - so to speak - decides to write a play, he does not do it simply in order to pass the time, as the pagans thought. No, no: indeed, the utterly serious point here is that loving and being loved is God's passion. It is almost - infinite love! - as if he is bound to this passion, almost as if it were a weakness on his part; whereas in fact it is his strength, his almighty love: and in that respect his love is subject to no alteration of any kind. There ~ Hans Urs Von Balthasar
Johann Philipp Gustav Von Jolly quotes by Hans Urs Von Balthasar
Clothes can hide you from yourself but a bikini sure can't. ~ Diane Von Furstenberg
Johann Philipp Gustav Von Jolly quotes by Diane Von Furstenberg
I am bored. The great things are done. The German Reich is made. ~ Otto Von Bismarck
