Nothing is more certainly written in the book of fate than that these people are to be free. Nor is it less certain that the two races, equally free, cannot live in the same government. Nature, habit, opinion has drawn indelible lines of distinction between them. ~ Thomas Jefferson
Jefferson Memorial quotes by Thomas Jefferson
CBGB represents a lot to New York City and to underground rock and to new wave and post-punk and whatever. But, you know, it's like tearing down the Jefferson Memorial or something. ~ Dave Grohl
Jefferson Memorial quotes by Dave Grohl
To walk into the Jefferson memorial is to be in a temple of the pure idolatry of reason ~ Scot McKnight
Jefferson Memorial quotes by Scot McKnight
Needless to say, what whites now think and say about race has undergone a revolution. In fact, it would be hard to find other opinions broadly held by Americans that have changed so radically. What whites are now expected to think about race can be summarized as follows: Race is an insignificant matter and not a valid criterion for any purpose - except perhaps for redressing wrongs done to non-whites. The races are equal in every respect and are therefore interchangeable. It thus makes no difference if a neighborhood or nation becomes non-white or if white children marry outside their race. Whites have no valid group interests, so it is illegitimate for them to attempt to organize as whites. Given the past crimes of whites, any expression of racial pride is wrong. The displacement of whites by non-whites through immigration will strengthen the United States. These are matters on which there is little ground for disagreement; anyone who holds differing views is not merely mistaken but morally suspect.
By these standards, of course, most of the great men of America's past are morally suspect, and many Americans are embarrassed to discover what our traditional heroes actually said. Some people deliberately conceal this part of our history. For example, the Jefferson Memorial has the following quotation from the third president inscribed on the marble interior: "Nothing is more certainly written in the book of fate than that these people [the Negroes] shall be free." Jeffers ~ Jared Taylor
Jefferson Memorial quotes by Jared Taylor
At Concerned Veterans for America, we've made the case that the defense budget could be targeted for spending reform, but in a targeted fashion that genuinely changes unsustainable spending trajectories while preserving U.S. defense capacity. ~ Pete Hegseth
Jefferson Memorial quotes by Pete Hegseth
The Constitution of most of our states (and of the United States) assert that all power is inherent in the people; that they may exercise it by themselves; that it is their right and duty to be at all times armed. ~ Thomas Jefferson
Jefferson Memorial quotes by Thomas Jefferson
The instability of our laws is really an immense evil. I think it would be well to provide in our constitutions that there shall always be a twelve-month between the ingross-ing a bill & passing it: that it should then be offered to its passage without changing a word: and that if circum-stances should be thought to require a speedier passage, it should take two thirds of both houses instead of a bare majority. ~ Thomas Jefferson
Jefferson Memorial quotes by Thomas Jefferson
It is wonderful to me that old men should not be sensible that their minds keep pace with their bodies in the progress of decay. ~ Thomas Jefferson
Jefferson Memorial quotes by Thomas Jefferson
I find that he is happiest of whom the world says least, good or bad. ~ Thomas Jefferson
Jefferson Memorial quotes by Thomas Jefferson
If there is one principle more deeply rooted in the mind of every American, it is that we should have nothing to do with conquest. ~ Thomas Jefferson
Jefferson Memorial quotes by Thomas Jefferson
I predict future happiness for Americans, if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them. ~ Thomas Jefferson
Jefferson Memorial quotes by Thomas Jefferson
When we seek to understand liberty, equality, progress, constitutional governance, separation of church and state, and the meaning of the American Revolution, we do so in contexts framed by Jefferson's writings and arguments. Whatever we think of Jefferson as a person or as a politician, we can never take away from him his remarkable gift as a writer or his ultimate claims to fame. He achieved his intention to express 'the American mind' and became the leading spokesman for the revolution of ideas that changed, and that continues to change, the face of America and the world. His words mean not only what he might have intended them to mean, but also what succeeding generations of Americans have read into them. Thus, whether he would even comprehend the United States in the first years of the twenty-first century, Jefferson's shadow looms large over us, thanks to the conflicting influences of his thinking, doing, and -- most important -- his writing. That truth alone requires each generation to reacquaint itself with the life and work of Thomas Jefferson, and to grapple with his ambiguous legacies. ~ R.B. Bernstein
Jefferson Memorial quotes by R.B. Bernstein
You are a single woman; you intend to remain one. You've acquired enough sexual experience to feel you belong to your times. You do not have children; you never intended to. Sustained romantic intensities have not been for you. Your explanation (not an untrue one, though not quite sufficient) is that you have let yourself be shaped by so many conventions, expectations, and requirements (institution's, people's), by so much dread of disapproval, that the discipline of solitude - severe solitude - has been required to give you the sense of an independent selfhood. The intensities of friendship suit you better. Friendship's choreography is for multiple partners: for varied groups and surprisingly sustained duets. ~ Margo Jefferson
Jefferson Memorial quotes by Margo Jefferson
I can't live without books ~ Thomas Jefferson
Jefferson Memorial quotes by Thomas Jefferson
Everything predicted by the enemies of banks, in the beginning, is now coming to pass. We are to be ruined now by the deluge of bank paper. It is cruel that such revolutions in private fortunes should be at the mercy of avaricious adventurers, who, instead of employing their capital, if any they have, in manufactures, commerce, and other useful pursuits, make it an instrument to burden all the interchanges of property with their swindling profits, profits which are the price of no useful industry of theirs. ~ Thomas Jefferson
Jefferson Memorial quotes by Thomas Jefferson
Blest is that nation whose silent course of happiness furnishes nothing for history to say. ~ Thomas Jefferson
Jefferson Memorial quotes by Thomas Jefferson
Whenever you are to do a thing, though it can never be known but to yourself, ask yourself how you would act if all the world were looking at you, and act accordingly. ~ Thomas Jefferson
Jefferson Memorial quotes by Thomas Jefferson
Religious people see "them" as the problem; Jesus-followers see "us" as the problem. ~ Jefferson Bethke
Jefferson Memorial quotes by Jefferson Bethke
Knowing that religion does not furnish grosser bigots than law, I expect little from old judges. ~ Thomas Jefferson
Jefferson Memorial quotes by Thomas Jefferson
The remaining revenue on the consumption of foreign luxuries to domestic comforts, being collected on our seaboard and frontiers only, and incorporated with the transactions of our mercantile citizens, it may be the pleasure and the pride of an American to ask, What farmer, what merchant, what laborer ever sees a tax gatherer of the United States? ~ Thomas Jefferson
Jefferson Memorial quotes by Thomas Jefferson
The course of history shows that as a government grows, liberty decreases. ~ Thomas Jefferson
Jefferson Memorial quotes by Thomas Jefferson
The Wisdom of Solomon (Carl)

They censor words not the things they denote:
It would create less of a stir to drop a piece of shit on Grant's tomb
than to write it out in white paint.
Because people recognize that's what memorials are for–old bums & dogs to shit on. ~ Allen Ginsberg
Jefferson Memorial quotes by Allen Ginsberg
The principle of the Constitution is that of a separation of legislative, Executive and Judiciary functions, except in cases specified. If this principle be not expressed in direct terms, it is clearly the spirit of the Constitution, and it ought to be so commented and acted on by every friend of free government. ~ Thomas Jefferson
Jefferson Memorial quotes by Thomas Jefferson
All things here appear to me to trudge on in one and the same round: we rise in the morning that we may eat breakfast, dinner andsupper and to bed again that we may get up the next morning and do the same: so that you never saw two peas more alike than our yesterday and to-day. ~ Thomas Jefferson
Jefferson Memorial quotes by Thomas Jefferson
You seem to consider the judges as the ultimate arbiters of all constitutional questions; a very dangerous doctrine indeed, and one which would place us under the despotism of an oligarchy. Our judges are as honest as other men, and not more so. They have, with others, the same passions for party, for power, and the privilege of their corps ... Their power [is] the more dangerous as they are in office for life, and not responsible, as the other functionaries are, to the elective control. The Constitution has erected no such single tribunal, knowing that to whatever hands confided, with the corruptions of time and party, its members would become despots. It has more wisely made all the departments co-equal and co-sovereign within themselves. ~ Thomas Jefferson
Jefferson Memorial quotes by Thomas Jefferson
There is a ripeness of time for death,
regarding others as well as ourselves, when it is reasonable we should drop off, and make room for
another growth. When we have lived our generation out, we should not wish to encroach on another. ~ Thomas Jefferson
Jefferson Memorial quotes by Thomas Jefferson
When we see religion split into so many thousand of sects, and I may say Christianity itself divided into its thousands also, who are disputing, anathematizing and where the laws permit burning and torturing one another for abstractions which no one of them understand, and which are indeed beyond the comprehension of the human mind, into which of the chambers of this Bedlam would a man wish to thrust himself.
[Letter to George Logan, 12 November 1816] ~ Thomas Jefferson
Jefferson Memorial quotes by Thomas Jefferson
It is an encouraging observation that no good measure was ever proposed which, if duly pursued, failed to prevail in the end. ~ Thomas Jefferson
Jefferson Memorial quotes by Thomas Jefferson
Every memorial in its time has a different goal. ~ Maya Lin
Jefferson Memorial quotes by Maya Lin
Societies exist under three forms sufficiently distinguishable. 1. Without government, as among our Indians. 2. Under governments wherein the will of every one has a just influence, as is the case in England in a slight degree, and in our states, in a great one. 3. Under governments of force: as is the case in all other monarchies and in most of the other republics. To have an idea of the curse of existence under these last, they must be seen. It is a government of wolves over sheep. ~ Thomas Jefferson
Jefferson Memorial quotes by Thomas Jefferson
And frankly the people who seem to best understand that we are creatures of love and desire, not thoughts, are the current giant tech companies of the world. Think about how Apple exists with a temple-like space (tell me their retail stores don't feel so "set apart" from the ordinary retail design that it doesn't immediately conjure up sacred feelings) where you go to sacrifice (enormously large portions of your money) to obtain that which you are looking for - connection, meaning and depth. People stand in line all night, some even camping out on the sidewalk, for the latest device that offers those implicitly understood benefits. This phone can, and will, be more than a phone. I think it's even fair to say that Apple is a religion with Steve Jobs as a priest (who has become a venerated secular saint after his death), mediating between man and God to give us what we want. Connection. Power. God-like knowledge of good and evil. And we take the phone, and we crouch and bend over. Usually with heads bowed. Laser focused on something. Blocking out all around us. We are silent and solemn. Tending not to speak. And then we perform a certain behaviour over and over and over again. Sound familiar? Swipe. ~ Jefferson Bethke
Jefferson Memorial quotes by Jefferson Bethke
Three years ago the Government announced the creation of Reconciliation Place, and said that it would include a memorial to those removed from their families. However, they refused to include any of those who were removed in the design of their own memorial. ~ Malcolm Fraser
Jefferson Memorial quotes by Malcolm Fraser
The ground of liberty is to be gained by inches. We must be contented to secure what we can get from time to time and eternally press forward for what is yet to get. It takes time to persuade men to do even what is for their own good. ~ Thomas Jefferson
Jefferson Memorial quotes by Thomas Jefferson
Most of the time we're persecuted not because we love Jesus, but because we're prideful, arrogant jerks who don't love the real Jesus. We're often judgmental, hypocritical, and legalistic while claiming to follow a Jesus who is forgiving, authentic, and loving. Sometimes people will hate us because we preach the same gospel Jesus preached, and sometimes people will hate us because we're jerks. Let's not do the second one and blame it on the first. ~ Jefferson Bethke
Jefferson Memorial quotes by Jefferson Bethke
Should things go wrong at any time, the people will set them to rights by the peaceable exercise of their elective rights. ~ Thomas Jefferson
Jefferson Memorial quotes by Thomas Jefferson
I know no safe depository of the ultimate powers of the society but the people themselves ; and if we think them not enlightened enough to exercise their control with a wholesome discretion, the remedy is not to take it from them, but to inform their discretion by education. This is the true corrective of abuses of constitutional power. ~ Thomas Jefferson
Jefferson Memorial quotes by Thomas Jefferson
I deplore with you the putrid state into which our newspapers have passed, and the malignity, the vulgarity, and mendacious spirit of those who write for them ... This has in a great degree been produced by the violence and malignity of party spirit. ~ Thomas Jefferson
Jefferson Memorial quotes by Thomas Jefferson
The general desire of men to live by their heads rather than their hands, and the strong allurements of great cities to those who have any turn for dissipation, threaten to make them here, as in Europe, the sinks of voluntary misery. ~ Thomas Jefferson
Jefferson Memorial quotes by Thomas Jefferson
The impious presumption of legislators and rulers, civil as well as ecclesiastical, who, being themselves but fallible and uninspired men, have assumed dominion over the faith of others, setting up their own opinions and modes of thinking as the only true and infallible, and as such endeavoring to impose them on others, hath established and maintained false religions over the greatest part of the world and through all time. ~ Thomas Jefferson
Jefferson Memorial quotes by Thomas Jefferson
All the capital employed in paper speculation is barren and useless, producing, like that on a gaming table, no accession to itself, and is withdrawn from commerce and agriculture where it would have produced addition to the common mass It nourishes in our citizens habits of vice and idleness instead of industry and morality It has furnished effectual means of corrupting such a portion of the legislature as turns the balance between the honest voters whichever way it is directed. ~ Thomas Jefferson
Jefferson Memorial quotes by Thomas Jefferson
But Hamilton lost the day, Jefferson won, and we have a Bill of Rights built into our Constitution that, as Hamilton feared, has increasingly been used to limit, rather than expand, the range of human rights American citizens can claim. And because it's in our Constitution, the only way other than a Supreme Court decision to make explicit "new" rights (such as a right to health care) is through the process of amending that document. ~ Thom Hartmann
