After one of his [Hubert Humphrey] long-winded harangues I suggested he had probably been vaccinated with a phonograph needle. He responded by saying that I would have been a great success in the movies working for Eighteenth Century-Fox. ~ Barry Goldwater
Hubert Humphrey quotes by Barry Goldwater
Well, you have to remember that until 1948, when Hubert Humphrey and others forced the Democratic Party to adopt a new policy on civil rights, the Democratic Party was the party of the old solid South. All of the racists, all of the Cottonhead Smith types and so on were Democrats, allies of Franklin Roosevelt - because of their seniority - of all the major committees of the Congress. ~ William A. Rusher
Hubert Humphrey quotes by William A. Rusher
You remind me of Hubert Humphrey. You talk too much ~ Ernest Hollings
Hubert Humphrey quotes by Ernest Hollings
Hubert Humphrey is a treacherous, gutless old ward-heeler who should be put in a goddamn bottle and sent out with the Japanese current. ~ Hunter S. Thompson
Hubert Humphrey quotes by Hunter S. Thompson
When I did 'Esquire,' I did a lot of celebrity covers, but the celebrity cover was Hubert Humphrey as a dummy, sitting on Lyndon Johnson's lap and aping his feelings about the war. I did celebrity covers that made a difference in what was going on in American culture. ~ George Lois
Hubert Humphrey quotes by George Lois
[He]talks so fast that listening to him is like trying to read Playboy magazine with your wife turning the pages. ~ Barry M. Goldwater
Hubert Humphrey quotes by Barry M. Goldwater
The senate is a place filled with goodwill and good intentions, and if the road to hell is paved with them, then it's a pretty good detour.
Hubert Humphrey, as quoted by Biden, p. 134 ~ Joe Biden
Hubert Humphrey quotes by Joe Biden
The view that we know less than we thought we knew about how to change the human condition came, in time, to be called neoconservatism. Many ... , myself included, disliked the term because we did not think we were conservative, neo or paleo. (I voted for John Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson and Hubert Humphrey and worked in the latter's presidential campaign.) It would have been better if we had been called policy skeptics; that is, people who thought it was hard, though not impossible, to make useful and important changes in public policy. ~ James Q. Wilson
Hubert Humphrey quotes by James Q. Wilson
Be civilized. Grudges are for Neanderthals. – Hubert Humphrey ~ David Pietrusza
Hubert Humphrey quotes by David Pietrusza
You people voted for Hubert Humphrey and killed Jesus! ~ Hunter S. Thompson
Hubert Humphrey quotes by Hunter S. Thompson

" ... in an airport in '64, Goldwater said, 'Well, keep punching, Hubert' during a chance meeting there.
By the end of 1977, it became increasingly clear that the Boss (Hubert Humphrey) would not be around much longer. And on the Senate floor one day, Barry Goldwater walked across the aisle and enveloped Hubert Humphrey. Goldwater was so big and Humphrey so frail that Humphrey almost disappeared. The two men stood for a long moment, locked in a hug, and I could see that both men were crying. They made no effort to hide it."
- Joe Biden (Promises to Keep: On Life and Politics) ~ Joe Biden
Hubert Humphrey quotes by Joe Biden
And what kind of sick and twisted impulse would cause a professional sportswriter to deliver a sermon from the Book of Revelations off his hotel balcony on the dawn of Super Sunday? I had not planned a sermon for that morning. I had not even planned to be in Houston, for that matter ... . But now, looking back on that outburst, I see a certain inevitability about it. Probably it was a crazed and futile effort to somehow explain the extremely twisted nature of my relationship with God, Nixon and the National Football League: The three had long since become inseparable in my mind, a sort of unholy trinity that had caused me more trouble and personal anguish in the past few months than Ron Ziegler, Hubert Humphrey and Peter Sheridan all together had caused me in a year on the campaign trail. ~ Hunter S. Thompson
Hubert Humphrey quotes by Hunter S. Thompson
According to Gandhi, the seven sins are wealth without works, pleasure without conscience, knowledge without character, commerce without morality, science without humanity, worship without sacrifice, and politics without principle. Well, Hubert Humphrey may have sinned in the eyes of God, as we all do, but according to those definitions of Gandhi's, it was Hubert Humphrey without sin. ~ Jimmy Carter
Hubert Humphrey quotes by Jimmy Carter
I was sitting at home and had a profound experience. I experienced, in all of my Being, that someday I was going to die, and it wouldn't be like it had been happening, almost dying but somehow staying alive, but I would just die! And two things would happen right before I died: I would regret my entire life; I would want to live it over again. This terrified me. The thought that I would live my entire life, look at it and realize I blew it forced me to do something with my life. ~ Hubert Selby, Jr.
Hubert Humphrey quotes by Hubert Selby, Jr.
Frank Schirrmacher's passing is a great loss. Among the intellectuals, he, along with Friedrich Kittler, was the only one who understood the philosophical dimensions of the Internet. ~ Hubert Burda
Hubert Humphrey quotes by Hubert Burda
In sum, the purpose is to contest the popular view, because popular opinions are so frequently found to be untimely, misled (by propaganda), or plainly wrong. ~ Humphrey B. Neill
Hubert Humphrey quotes by Humphrey B. Neill
When you write about the people you hate the most, do it with love. ~ Hubert Selby, Jr.
Hubert Humphrey quotes by Hubert Selby, Jr.
In 1963, when I assigned the name "quark" to the fundamental constituents of the nucleon, I had the sound first, without the spelling, which could have been "kwork." Then, in one of my occasional perusals of Finnegans Wake, by James Joyce, I came across the word "quark" in the phrase "Three quarks for Muster Mark." Since "quark" (meaning, for one thing, the cry of a gull) was clearly intended to rhyme with "Mark," as well as "bark" and other such words, I had to find an excuse to pronounce it as "kwork." But the book represents the dreams of a publican named Humphrey Chimpden Earwicker. Words in the text are typically drawn from several sources at once, like the "portmanteau words" in Through the Looking Glass. From time to time, phrases occur in the book that are partially determined by calls for drinks at the bar. I argued, therefore, that perhaps one of the multiple sources of the cry "Three quarks for Muster Mark" might be "Three quarts for Mister Mark," in which case the pronunciation "kwork" would not be totally unjustified. In any case, the number three fitted perfectly the way quarks occur in nature. ~ Murray Gell-Mann
Hubert Humphrey quotes by Murray Gell-Mann
To our three levels of complicating alienation we must add the fundamental distinction or break between God and humankind, between Creator and creature. That "division" is no tragedy, but part and parcel of our identity and God's grandeur. It must be accounted for in the mystery of God, who reveals himself to us as we can bear it: revelation invariably involves concealment, since God is God and we are not. The communion that he forges with us remains a tantalizing "mystery" that leads us to know more and more of him, but never in completion - and at this, we wonder! As Kallistos Ware puts it, where knowledge of God is concerned, "The eyes are closed - but they are also opened" (The Orthodox Way, p. 15). ~ Edith M. Humphrey
Hubert Humphrey quotes by Edith M. Humphrey
My first job was on Broadway. Then I went into the Navy. When I came out of the Navy, I went back to Broadway and a friend of mine, Lauren Bacall, was in Hollywood filming with Humphrey Bogart. She told one of her producers I was great in my play, and he saw it and cast me in 'The Strange Love of Martha Ivers'. ~ Kirk Douglas
Hubert Humphrey quotes by Kirk Douglas
The War of the Roses in England and the Civil War in America were both intestinal conflicts arising out of similar ideas. In the first the clash was between feudalism and the new economic order; in the second, between an agricultural society and a new industrial one. Both led to similar ends; the first to the founding of the English nation, and the second to the founding of the American. Both were strangely interlinked; for it was men of the old military and not of the new economic mind
men, such as Sir Humphrey Gilbert and Sir Walter Raleigh
who founded the English colonies in America. ~ J. F. C. Fuller
Hubert Humphrey quotes by J. F. C. Fuller
This book is dedicated, with love, to Bobby, who has found the only pound of pure- Faith in a Loving God. ~ Hubert Selby, Jr.
Hubert Humphrey quotes by Hubert Selby, Jr.
Life was not longer something to endure, but to live. ~ Hubert Selby, Jr.
Hubert Humphrey quotes by Hubert Selby, Jr.
I carry my flute around everywhere I go and pull it out. It actually becomes a panacea for me, for things that go on around me. It really gives me relief and calmness, tranquility. ~ Hubert Laws
Hubert Humphrey quotes by Hubert Laws
As for Humphrey, he was never renowned for tidiness. "My nature abhors the vacuum," he said. ~ Tom Rachman
Hubert Humphrey quotes by Tom Rachman
We're at war with nature. If we win, we're lost. ~ Hubert Reeves
Hubert Humphrey quotes by Hubert Reeves
Being an artist doesn't take much. Just everything you got. Which means of course that as the process is giving you life, it is also bringing you closer to death. But it's no big deal. They are one in the same and cannot be avoided or denied. So when I totally embrace this process, this life/death, and abandon myself to it completely, I transcend all this gibberish and hang out with the gods. It seems to me that that is worth the price of admission. ~ Hubert Selby, Jr.
Hubert Humphrey quotes by Hubert Selby, Jr.
Green grass, green grandstands, green concession stalls, green paper cups, green folding chairs and visors for sale, green and white ropes, green-topped Georgia pines. If justice were poetic, Hubert Green would win it every year. ~ John Updike
Hubert Humphrey quotes by John Updike
I like most of the Humphrey Bogart movies because they had to act then, and they acted very well. Edward G. Robinson is probably the best actor I've ever seen on the movies. ~ Patrick Macnee
Hubert Humphrey quotes by Patrick Macnee
I always cry at weddings, especially my own. ~ Humphrey Bogart
Hubert Humphrey quotes by Humphrey Bogart
This could be the start of a beautiful friendship." - Claude Rains to Humphrey Bogart - Casablanca ~ Claude Rains To Humphrey Bogart - Casablanca
Hubert Humphrey quotes by Claude Rains To Humphrey Bogart - Casablanca
The voice so filled with nostalgia that you could almost see the memories floating through the blue smoke, memories not only of music and joy and youth, but perhaps, of dreams. They listened to the music, each hearing it in his own way, feeling relaxed and a part of the music, a part of each other, and almost a part of the world. ~ Hubert Selby, Jr.
Hubert Humphrey quotes by Hubert Selby, Jr.
Many a healthy reaction has proved fatal. ~ Humphrey B. Neill
Hubert Humphrey quotes by Humphrey B. Neill
Silly," Dax thought, "but the mere issuing of a command always inspires confidence. It doesn'tt matter whether it is a necessary command, or even a correct one.: Then , a little later, an afterthought came to him: "It inspires self-confidence even in the man who issues it. ~ Humphrey Cobb
Hubert Humphrey quotes by Humphrey Cobb
Man is the most insane species. He worships an invisible God and destroys a visible Nature. Unaware that this Nature he's destroying is this God he's worshipping. ~ Hubert Reeves
Hubert Humphrey quotes by Hubert Reeves
An extraordinary writer ... It is the vastness of Nick Tosches' heart that makes it possible to reveal the darkness. ~ Hubert Selby, Jr.
Hubert Humphrey quotes by Hubert Selby, Jr.
I guess we're kindred souls and that's why we can feel so close to each other. ~ Hubert Selby, Jr.
Hubert Humphrey quotes by Hubert Selby, Jr.
She closed Dan's door and walked down the hall to her room. He makes a good boyfriend, she repeated to herself. What the hell was that suppose to mean? She didn't just want a good boyfriend. She wanted that thing Gustav Klimt had captured so perfectly in The Kiss. That radiant, electric, hold-me-tight-so-I don't-fall-from-up-here-in-the-sky feeling of being in love.
Well, don't we all, sweetie? ~ Cecily Von Ziegesar
Hubert Humphrey quotes by Cecily Von Ziegesar
I think things that contribute to the destruction of our free-incentive system are wrong. A trend against that free-incentive system is wrong, and should only be temporarily engaged in, in the event that war or something of that kind requires it. Otherwise, it should be reduced. ~ George M. Humphrey
Hubert Humphrey quotes by George M. Humphrey
The definitive anthropological work on barter, by Caroline Humphrey, of Cambridge, could not be more definitive in its conclusions: No example of a barter economy, pure and simple, has ever been described, let alone the emergence from it of money; all available ethnography suggests that there never has been such a thing. ~ David Graeber
Hubert Humphrey quotes by David Graeber
I can write, He floated up to the ceiling, and a baby rabbit came out of his pocket, grew wings, and flew away. And you will believe that it really happened. That's magic, isn't it? ~ Humphrey Carpenter
Hubert Humphrey quotes by Humphrey Carpenter
I used to look at these pictures of trumpeters pointing their instrument to the ceiling. Stunning pictures, but if you play the trumpet and point it upwards, all the spit comes back into your mouth! ~ Humphrey Lyttelton
Hubert Humphrey quotes by Humphrey Lyttelton
Everything about it was wrong. Thats why it worked so good. ~ Hubert Selby, Jr.
Hubert Humphrey quotes by Hubert Selby, Jr.
Technologies that exist between man and nature in a simple form and those that enable the interaction with other technologies are becoming significantly more complex and create their own information systems. ~ Hubert Burda
Hubert Humphrey quotes by Hubert Burda
While Saladin is attacking Reynald at Kerak:

"As it happens, Raynald is hosting a wedding party for his wife's son, Humphrey of Toron, and princess Isabelle, King Baldwin's half sister, who is eleven years old.The pounding continues increasingly, but the guests have traveled from all over the Latin East for this party and they are not about to put an end to the festivities over a mere Moslem attack. Finally, Lady Stephanie, Raynald's wife, has her servants take some dishes from the wedding feast to Saladin's tent. Saladin is delighted to receive the gifts and offers profuse thanks to lady Stephanie. He then ask where the newly weds will be spending the night. When the servants point out the location, Saladin orders his army not to bombard that tower until morning. ~ Paul L. Williams
