Relativity theory applies to macroscopic bodies, such as stars. The event of coincidence, that is, in ultimate analysis of collision, is the primitive event in the theory of relativity and defines a point in space-time, or at least would define a point if the colliding panicles were infinitely small. Quantum theory has its roots in the microscopic world and, from its point of view, the event of coincidence, or of collision, even if it takes place between particles of no spatial extent, is not primitive and not at all sharply isolated in space-time. The two theories operate with different mathematical conceptsãthe four dimensional Riemann space and the infinite dimensional Hilbert space, respectively. So far, the two theories could not be united, that is, no mathematical formulation exists to which both of these theories are approximations. All physicists believe that a union of the two theories is inherently possible and that we shall find it. Nevertheless, it is possible also to imagine that no union of the two theories can be found. This example illustrates the two possibilities, of union and of conflict, mentioned before, both of which are conceivable. ~ Eugene Paul Wigner
Eugene Paul Wigner quotes by Eugene Paul Wigner
Physics is becoming so unbelievably complex that it is taking longer and longer to train a physicist. It is taking so long, in fact, to train a physicist to the place where he understands the nature of physical problems that he is already too old to solve them. ~ Eugene Paul Wigner
Eugene Paul Wigner quotes by Eugene Paul Wigner
The miracle of the appropriateness of the language of mathematics for the formulation of the laws of physics is a wonderful gift which we neither understand nor deserve. We should be grateful for it and hope that it will remain valid in future research and that it will extend, for better or for worse, to our pleasure, even though perhaps also to our bafflement, to wide branches of learning. ~ Eugene Paul Wigner
Eugene Paul Wigner quotes by Eugene Paul Wigner
I love funny people. I met and became friends with some of the funniest people ever. Gilda Radner, bless her soul; Martin Short; Dave Thomas; Eugene Levy. ~ Paul Shaffer
Eugene Paul Wigner quotes by Paul Shaffer
Paul gives us an astonishing understanding of waiting in the New Testament book of Romans, as rendered by Eugene Peterson, 'Waiting does not diminish us, any more than waiting diminishes a pregnant mother. We are enlarged in the waiting. We, of course, don't see what is enlarging us. But the longer we wait, the larger we become, and the more joyful our expectancy.' With such motivation, we can wait as we sense God is indeed with us, and at work within us, as he was with Mary as the child within her grew. ~ Luci Shaw
Eugene Paul Wigner quotes by Luci Shaw
I was appraising . . . not eye fooking. ~ Paul Allor
Eugene Paul Wigner quotes by Paul Allor
I never liked telling war stories. Some men love to tell them. Hell, some men need to. They need to convince themselves that the war is over. But I'm not one of them. ~ Paul Allor
Eugene Paul Wigner quotes by Paul Allor
In recent years it has become impossible to talk about man's relation to nature without referring to "ecology" ... such leading scientists in this area as Rachel Carson, Barry Commoner, Eugene Odum, Paul Ehrlich and others, have become our new delphic voices ... so influential has their branch of science become that our time might well be called the "Age of Ecology". ~ Rachel Carson
Eugene Paul Wigner quotes by Rachel Carson
Cross and resurrection are the South and North polls, true gospel polarities, of a single, undivided, salvation world. Remove either Paul and you've got salvation. ~ Eugene H. Peterson
Eugene Paul Wigner quotes by Eugene H. Peterson
Solid state I don't like, even though I started it. ~ Wolfgang Paul
Eugene Paul Wigner quotes by Wolfgang Paul
My characters, I find them as I'm writing. It's quite incredible how fully realized they are in my mind, how many details I know about each of them. ~ Paul Auster
Eugene Paul Wigner quotes by Paul Auster
You know, you look at term limits, you poll term limits, 70, 80 percent of Republicans or Democrats are for it. ~ Rand Paul
Eugene Paul Wigner quotes by Rand Paul
Ultimately, love conquers all, and gay or straight, don't we all want to believe that? I would that if this was to happen to me, and one of my kids had come and told me he or she was gay, I would say: If that's the only way you can live, then I love you. ~ Paul Sorvino
Eugene Paul Wigner quotes by Paul Sorvino
I start with voice, maybe a sentence. That sentence might embody an image, and I go from there. One sentence to the next. Sound drives the work these days - sound before description. ~ Paul Lisicky
Eugene Paul Wigner quotes by Paul Lisicky
[Mathematics] is security. Certainty. Truth. Beauty. Insight. Structure. Architecture. I see mathematics, the part of human knowledge that I call mathematics, as one thing-one great, glorious thing. Whether it is differential topology, or functional analysis, or homological algebra, it is all one thing ... They are intimately interconnected, they are all facets of the same thing. That interconnection, that architecture, is secure truth and is beauty. That's what mathematics is to me. ~ Paul Halmos
Eugene Paul Wigner quotes by Paul Halmos
We fantasize an archaeological scoop. Meanwhile what we have right before us turns out to be far more useful - a theological probe. Instead of being told what Jeremiah's parents were doing, we are told what his God was doing: "Before I shaped you in the womb, I knew all about you. Before you saw the light of day, I had holy plans for you: A prophet to the nations - that's what I had in mind for you" (Jer 1:5). ~ Eugene H. Peterson
Eugene Paul Wigner quotes by Eugene H. Peterson
If you do something long enough, you uncover life lessons along the way, ~ Paul Baloche
Eugene Paul Wigner quotes by Paul Baloche
Writing can be a very solitary business. It's you sat at a desk typing words into a computer. It can get lonely sometimes and lots of writers live quite isolated lives. ~ Paul Kane
Eugene Paul Wigner quotes by Paul Kane
A lot of us are secretly scared, for whatever reason, and so we get in our own way. But if you really want something, you have to ask for it. ~ Paul Downs Colaizzo
Eugene Paul Wigner quotes by Paul Downs Colaizzo
He looked beyond. He looked to the peoples of the Earth and saw the destruction of the family because of the lack of children. Paul VI was courageous. He was a good pastor. He warned his sheep about the wolves that were approaching, and from the heavens he blesses us today. ~ Pope Francis
Eugene Paul Wigner quotes by Pope Francis
You must be like me; you must suffer in rhythm. ~ Jean-Paul Sartre
Eugene Paul Wigner quotes by Jean-Paul Sartre
It is in the dark times that the light of friendship shines brightest. ~ Richard Paul Evans
Eugene Paul Wigner quotes by Richard Paul Evans
Travelers perceptions do not always reflect the reality of a situation, and ignorance is costing the industry billions. ~ Paul Dowling
Eugene Paul Wigner quotes by Paul Dowling
The world, in terms of choices available to educated, ambitious workers and entrepreneurs, is way bigger than just the United States, Japan and Europe. ~ Paul Singer
Eugene Paul Wigner quotes by Paul Singer
The truth of faith is a slender, glowing element that runs through even the seemingly ordinary and undramatic moments of existence. Even at low intensity, it is a steady source of illumination. Such religious truth is powerful even when it seems faint, even when it seems obscured by the larger events of history. ~ Eugene Kennedy
Eugene Paul Wigner quotes by Eugene Kennedy
I'm holding out a little hope personally because I want to be back, but this injury could take a year to fully recover. The last thing I want to do is feel like I'm OK, come out early and be vulnerable to further injury. ~ Paul George
Eugene Paul Wigner quotes by Paul George
Tears are part of the leeway of the common areas of a hospital, since so many have to do their crying away from the patient's bed. You don't care who sees you cry in the lobby: it was port of entry for all the sorrows, and one gave up all one's previous citizenship at the border. ~ Paul Monette
Eugene Paul Wigner quotes by Paul Monette
We are intimately linked in this harvest work. Anyone who accepts what you do, accepts me, the One who sent you. Anyone who accepts what I do accepts my Father, who sent me. Accepting a messenger of God is as good as being God's messenger. Accepting someone's help is as good as giving someone help. This is a large work I've called you into, but don't be overwhelmed by it. It's best to start small. Give a cool cup of water to someone who is thirsty, for instance. The smallest act of giving or receiving makes you a true apprentice. You won't lose out on a thing. ~ Eugene H. Peterson
Eugene Paul Wigner quotes by Eugene H. Peterson
My existence was beginning to cause me serious concern. Was I a mere figment of the imagination? ~ Jean-Paul Sartre
Eugene Paul Wigner quotes by Jean-Paul Sartre
On the political as on the economic front it's important not to fall into the "not as bad as" trap. High unemployment isn't O.K. just because it hasn't hit 1933 levels; ominous political trends shouldn't be dismissed just because there's no Hitler in sight. ~ Paul Krugman
Eugene Paul Wigner quotes by Paul Krugman
Take some wood and canvas and nails and things. Build yourself a theater, a stage, light it, learn about it. When you've done that you will probably know how to write a play. ~ Eugene O'Neill
Eugene Paul Wigner quotes by Eugene O'Neill
Urban planner and historian Lewis Mumford, though no Marxist, could see how the vast gulf between the promise of technological progress and its capitalist application was a glaring contradiction at the heart of the system: "Those machines whose output was so great that all men might be clothed; those new methods of agriculture and new agricultural implements which promised crops so big that all men might be fed - the very instruments that were to give the whole community the basis of a good life, turned out, for the vast majority of people who possessed neither capital nor land, to be nothing short of instruments of torture. ~ Paul D'Amato
Eugene Paul Wigner quotes by Paul D'Amato
I know it's useless to talk. But sometimes I feel so lonely. ~ Eugene O'Neill
Eugene Paul Wigner quotes by Eugene O'Neill
The great majority of Scientologists I know are good people who are genuinely interested in improving conditions on this planet and helping others. ~ Paul Haggis
Eugene Paul Wigner quotes by Paul Haggis
Paradigms power perceptions, perceptions power emotions. ~ William Paul Young
Eugene Paul Wigner quotes by William Paul Young
Kill your television! ~ Paul Thomas Anderson
Eugene Paul Wigner quotes by Paul Thomas Anderson
I believe the best influence you can have is not by being preachy, but by trying to live. For example, knowing you're not perfect, but trying to treat everyone kind and accepting everyone for who they are. ~ Paul Butcher
Eugene Paul Wigner quotes by Paul Butcher
Travel books are all sorts - some are autobiographies, some are about falling in love. Some are about having great meals, some are about suffering. There are as many different kinds of travel books as there are novels. People think a travel book is one thing. It's many things. ~ Paul Theroux
Eugene Paul Wigner quotes by Paul Theroux
Accuracy, Rule of, Corollary: Provided, of course, that you know there is a problem. ~ Paul Dickson
Eugene Paul Wigner quotes by Paul Dickson
The practice of executing such offenders is a relic of the past and is inconsistent with evolving standards of decency in a civilized society. ~ John Paul Stevens
