You're sure this is what you want?" I search her eyes for doubt, fear, uncertainty, but all I see is that fire. Ten hells
"I'm sure"
"Then I'll find a way ~ Sabaa Tahir
Elias Veturius quotes by Sabaa Tahir
When did you star here?" I ask her.

"Three days ago. Sir. Aspirant. Um - " She wrings her hands.

"Veturius is fine."

She walks carefully, gingerly - the Commandant must have whipped her recently. And yet she doesn't hunch or shuffle like the others slaves. The straight-backed grace with which she moves tells her story better than words. She'd been a freewoman before this - I'd bet my scims on it. And she has no idea how pretty she is - or what kind of problems her beauty will cause for her at a place like Blackcliff. The wind pulls at her hair again, and I catch her scent - like fruit and sugar.

"Can I give you some advice?"

Her head flies up like a scared animal's. At least she's wary. "Right now you..." Will grab the attention of every male in a square mile. "Stand out," I finish. "It's hot, but you should wear a hood or a cloak - something to help you blend in."

She nods, but her eyes are suspicious. She wraps her arms around herself and drops back a little. I don't speak to her again. ~ Sabaa Tahir
Elias Veturius quotes by Sabaa Tahir
Are the Trials starting?" The girl claps her hands over her mouth. "I'm sorry," she whispers. "I - "

"It's all right." I don't smile at her. It will only scare her. For a female slave, a smile from a Mask is not usually a good thing. "I'm actually wondering the same thing. What's your name?"

"S-slave-Girl." Of course. My mother would already have scourged her name out of existence.

"Right. You work for the Commandant?" I want her to say no. I want her to say that my mother roped her into this. I want her to say she's assigned to the kitchens or infirmary, where slaves aren't scarred or missing body parts.

But the girl nods in response to my question. Don't let my mother break you, I think. The girl meets my eyes, and there is that feeling again, low and hot and consuming. Don't be weak. Fight. Escape.

A gust of wind whips a strand free from her bun and across her cheekbone. Defiance flashes across her face as she holds my gaze, and for a second, I see my own desire for freedom mirrored, intensified in her eyes. It's something I've never detected in the eyes of a fellow student, let alone a Scholar slave. For one strange moment, I feel less alone.

But then she looks down, and I wonder at my own naiveté. She can't fight. She can't scape. Not from Blackcliff. I smile joylessly; in this, at least, the slave and I are more similar than she'll ever know. ~ Sabaa Tahir
Elias Veturius quotes by Sabaa Tahir
I miss you. I'll always miss you. Even when I'm a ghost. ~ Sabaa Tahir
Elias Veturius quotes by Sabaa Tahir
The tapping grows insistent, and I turn, intending to tell off the Cadet. Instead, I'm faced with a slave-girl looking up at me through impossibly long eyelashes. A heated, visceral shock flares through me at the clarity of her dark gold eyes. For a second, I forget my name.
I've never seen her before, because if I had, I'd remember. Despite the heavy silver cuffs and high, painful-looking bun that mark all of Blackcliff's drudges, nothing about her says slave. Her black dress fits her like a glove, sliding over every curve in a way that makes more than one head turn. Her full lips and fine, straight nose would be the envy of most girls, Scholar or not. I stare at her, realize I'm staring, tell myself to stop staring, and then keep staring. My breath falters, and my body, traitor that is, tugs me forward until there are only inches between us.

"Asp-aspirant Veturius."

It's the way she says my name - like it's something to fear - that brings me back to myself. Pull it together, Veturius. I step away, appalled at myself when I see the terror in her eyes.

"What is it?" I ask calmly. ~ Sabaa Tahir
Elias Veturius quotes by Sabaa Tahir
You are an ember in the ashes, Elias Veturius. You will spark and burn, ravage and destroy. You cannot change it. You cannot stop it. ~ Sabaa Tahir
Elias Veturius quotes by Sabaa Tahir
I don't smile at her. It will only scare her. For a female slave, a smile from a Mask is not usually a good thing. ~ Sabaa Tahir
Elias Veturius quotes by Sabaa Tahir
We match each other stroke for stroke until I get a hit on her right arm.

She tries to switch sword arms, but I jab my scim at her wrist faster than she can parry. Her scim goes flying, and I tackle her. Her white-blonde hair tumbles free of her bun.

"Surrender!" I pin her down at the wrists, but she trashes and rips one arm free, scrabbling for a dagger at her waist. Steel stabs at my ribs, and seconds later, I am on my back with a blade at my throat.

"Ha!" She leans down, her hair falling around us like a shimmering silver curtain. ~ Sabaa Tahir
Elias Veturius quotes by Sabaa Tahir
I'm too hot to care. ~ Sabaa Tahir
Elias Veturius quotes by Sabaa Tahir
Adults find pleasure in deceiving a child. They consider it necessary, but they also enjoy it. The children very quickly figure it out and then practice deception themselves. ~ Elias Canetti
Elias Veturius quotes by Elias Canetti
There is something fluid about [packs] during the course of any individual manifestation. [p. 127] ~ Elias Canetti
Elias Veturius quotes by Elias Canetti
his tongue had always been a stiletto razor, finely-honed, covered with poisoned rust and with a life of its own. ~ Elias Anderson
Elias Veturius quotes by Elias Anderson
If there is a problem somewhere, this is what happens. Three people will try to do something concrete to settle the issue. Ten people will give a lecture analyzing what the three are doing. One hundred people will commend or condemn the ten for their lecture. One thousand people will argue about the problem. And one person-only one- will involve himself so deeply in the true solution that he is too busy to listen to any of it. Now ... which person are you? ~ Elias Chacour
Elias Veturius quotes by Elias Chacour
Travelling, one accepts everything; indignation stays at home. One looks, one listens, one is roused to enthusiasm by the most dreadful things because they are new. Good travellers are heartless. ~ Elias Canetti
Elias Veturius quotes by Elias Canetti
Draw a line in your mind. Never cross it again. You have a soul. It's damaged, but it's there. Don't let them take it from you, Elias. ~ Sabaa Tahir
Elias Veturius quotes by Sabaa Tahir
I play guys who are willing to go really far. If the dung really hits the fan, I don't know if I could walk the talk. But anyone who isn't willing to die for his convictions isn't worth living. My characters, no matter how demented they are, they have their convictions. ~ Elias Koteas
Elias Veturius quotes by Elias Koteas
And the law of God is written in every heart, and it is there that he manifests himself; And in infinite love, according to our necessities, states, conditions. And as we are all various and different from one another, more or less, so the law by the immediate operation of divine grace in the soul, is suited to every individual according to his condition. ~ Elias Hicks
Elias Veturius quotes by Elias Hicks
It is always the enemy who started it, even if he was not the first to speak out, he was certainly planning it; and if he was not actually planning it, he was thinking of it; and, if he was not thinking of it, he would have thought of it. ~ Elias Canetti
Elias Veturius quotes by Elias Canetti
To be wise is not to be wise in your own eyes ~ Elias Tan JS
Elias Veturius quotes by Elias Tan JS
A child ... opens and closes like a blossom. ~ Elias Canetti
Elias Veturius quotes by Elias Canetti
There is nothing that man fears more than the touch of the unknown. He wants to see what is reaching towards him, and to be able to recognize or at least classify it. Man always tends to avoid physical contact with anything strange. ~ Elias Canetti
Elias Veturius quotes by Elias Canetti
Good government generally begins in the family, and if the moral character of a people once degenerate, their political character must soon follow. ~ Elias Boudinot
Elias Veturius quotes by Elias Boudinot
A lot of these roles that I feel like I've had some sort of impact, or that have had an effect on me, have always been with directors who have the time to somehow get to know me. Any good director's going to be curious about who it is that's coming aboard. ~ Elias Koteas
Elias Veturius quotes by Elias Koteas
The planet's survival has become so uncertain that any effort, any thought that presupposes an assured future amounts to a mad gamble. ~ Elias Canetti
Elias Veturius quotes by Elias Canetti
When you write down your life, every page should contain something no one has ever heard about. ~ Elias Canetti
Elias Veturius quotes by Elias Canetti
A 'modern' man has nothing to add to modernism, if only because he has nothing to oppose it with. The well-adapted drop off the dead limb of time like lice. ~ Elias Canetti
Elias Veturius quotes by Elias Canetti
In the common room, they found Emer dozing in her chair, Lila scratching at the door, and Mine stirring a large pot and peering at its contents with an anxious, irritated expression. With a groan, the Archmage strode across the room and flung open the windows.
"It just needs more basil," Mine assured him. "No, it does not," Bram declared. "It needs less garlic. Didn't I tell you to follow a recipe?"
"I did follow a recipe!" Shouted Mine, defiantly flinging the rest of the basil into the pot.
"Show it to me, then."
"I threw it in the fire!"
"What have I told you about lying, child?"
"To get better at it! ~ Henry H. Neff
Elias Veturius quotes by Henry H. Neff
In what a delightful communion with God does that man live who habitually seeketh love! With the same mantle thrown over him from the cross - with the same act of amnesty, by which we hope to be saved - injuries the most provoked, and transgressions the most aggravated, are covered in eternal forgetfulness. ~ Elias Lyman Magoon
Elias Veturius quotes by Elias Lyman Magoon
Craftsman Ilmarinen wept
Every evening for his woman,
Weeping sleepless through the nights
And fasting through the days;
In the early hours complaining,
Every morning sighing for her,
Lamenting for his lovely lost one,
For his dear one in the grave.
For a month he swung no hammer,
Did not touch the copper handle,
and the clinking forge was silent.

Said the craftsman Ilmarinen:
"I poor fellow, do not know
How to live or how survive;
Sitting up or lying down
Nights are long and time is tedious.
I am troubled, low in spirit.

'Lonely are the nights now,lonely
And the mornings dreary, dreary.
In my sleeping I am troubled,
But the waking is the saddest.
It's not for evening that I'm lonely,
Not for morning that I'm dreary,
Not for olden times lamenting,
But I'm lonely for my loved one,
Dreary for the missing of her,
Lamenting for my dark-browed lovely.

'Often in these days it happens,
Happens in my midnight dreaming
that I stretch my hand out touching,
touching something that is nothing... ~ Elias Lönnrot
Elias Veturius quotes by Elias Lönnrot
Remember the favour of Allaah to you and the Book (Quraan) and wisdom (laws of the Quraan and Ahadeeth) which He has revealed to you, giving you advice through them (show your gratitude by obeying all His commands). Fear Allaah (in all matters) and know that surely Allaah is Aware of everything (and will call you to account for all your actions). ~ Afzal Hoosen Elias
Elias Veturius quotes by Afzal Hoosen Elias
Each organism raises its head over a field of corpses, smiles into the sun, and declares life good. ~ Elias Canetti
Elias Veturius quotes by Elias Canetti
By 1954, as an assistant professor with a group of three graduate students, I was able to initiate more complex experimental projects, dealing with the structure, stereochemistry and synthesis of natural products. As a result of the success of this research, I was appointed in 1956, at age twenty-seven, as professor of chemistry. ~ Elias James Corey
Elias Veturius quotes by Elias James Corey
In order for capitalism to evolve from its current toxic expression, I propose the value of international currencies be tied to an Index of Human Productive Output. The emphasis being on human productivity not inanimate machines and virtual assets created by the mirage of the investment banker ~ Said Elias Dawlabani
Elias Veturius quotes by Said Elias Dawlabani
In eternity everything is just beginning. ~ Elias Canetti
Elias Veturius quotes by Elias Canetti
For I believe that part of knowledge is its desire to show itself and its refusal to put up with a merely hidden existence. I find mute knowledge dangerous, for it grows ever more mute and ultimately secret, and must then avenge itself for being secret. ~ Elias Canetti
Elias Veturius quotes by Elias Canetti
THE CROWD, suddenly there where there was nothing before, is a mysterious and universal phenomenon. A few people may have been standing together-five, ten or twelve, not more; nothing has been announced, nothing is expected. Suddenly everywhere is black with people and more come streaming from all sides as though streets had only one direction. Most of them do not know what has happened and, if questioned, have no answer; but they hurry to be there where most other people are. There is a determination in their movement which is quite different from the expression of ordinary curiosity. It seems as though the movement of some of them transmits itself to the others. But that is not all; they have a goal which is there before they can find words for it. (16) ~ Elias Canetti
Elias Veturius quotes by Elias Canetti
Most people, including yourself, apparently, think The Moldau is about a river. It is not. It is a metaphor. It is about the progress of life, from its fragile beginnings through its joys and turbulence and on to its end, its magnificent end. ~ Gerald Elias
Elias Veturius quotes by Gerald Elias
I feel blessed. To live an artistic life, it's a blessing. ~ Elias Koteas
Elias Veturius quotes by Elias Koteas
Every command leaves behind a painful sting in the person who is forced to carry it out. ~ Elias Canetti
Elias Veturius quotes by Elias Canetti
I take a breath. Words seem suddenly trite and useless, so I step forward and grab Elias's hands, remembering Pop. Touch heals, Laia. I hold fast to him, trying to put everything I feel into that touch. I hope your Tribe is all right. I hope they survive the Martials. I'm truly, truly sorry. It's not enough. But it's all I have. After a moment, Elias lets out a breath and leans his forehead against mine. "Tell me what you told me that night in my room at Blackcliff," he murmurs. "What your Nan used to say to you." "As long as there is life" - I can hear Nan's warm voice as I say it - "there is hope." Elias lifts his head and looks down at me, the coolness in his eyes replaced by that raw, unquenchable fire. I forget to breathe. "Don't you forget it," he says. "Ever." I nod. The minutes pass, and neither of us pull away, instead finding solace in the coolness of the night and the quiet company of the stars. ~ Sabaa Tahir
Elias Veturius quotes by Sabaa Tahir
I would think I'd accomplished it all if I could get to play Quasimodo. ~ Elias Koteas
Elias Veturius quotes by Elias Koteas
As if one could know the good a person is capable of, when one doesn't know the bad he might do. ~ Elias Canetti
Elias Veturius quotes by Elias Canetti
For him [Kafka], the most tormenting thing about his notion of marriage must have been its ruling out the possibility of one's ever becoming so small as to be able to vanish: one has to be there. ~ Elias Canetti
Elias Veturius quotes by Elias Canetti
It's as though my mother's life has been cut in two and we each only hold half of her memories. And I realize that even combined we would never know the whole. She's greater than the sum of what we remember of her. The woman Harry knows and the one I know are just edges of something larger.
I think about Elias and what he knows of my life in the Forest. And of Catcher and what he knows of my life in Vista. But does either of them know the whole of me? ~ Carrie Ryan
Elias Veturius quotes by Carrie Ryan
The Fear of being lonely and alone after a breakup"

If you deal with that fear by finding love in another relationship before finding the love of God, you will find yourself holding to a lesser love that does not cast out fear.
You will still live in fear, because that relationship becomes your security, and you will fear losing that relationship.
Perfect love casts out all fear - 1 John 4:18
There is only one source of perfect love. ~ Elias Tan JS
Elias Veturius quotes by Elias Tan JS
Your Destiny is bound to what you have the courage for ~ Elias Tan JS
Elias Veturius quotes by Elias Tan JS
The business friend did not recognize the sewerman, which was not surprising as the man's face was no more than a shining turd. ~ Elias Canetti
Elias Veturius quotes by Elias Canetti
Language the most forcible proceeds from the man who is most sincere. The way to speak with power, or to write words that pierce mankind to the quick, is to speak and write honestly. ~ Elias Lyman Magoon
Elias Veturius quotes by Elias Lyman Magoon
Command and control corporate structure is out. Collaboration, decentralization and empowerment of small groups and the human spirit is in and is functional. ~ Said Elias Dawlabani
Elias Veturius quotes by Said Elias Dawlabani
No mind ever grew fat on a diet of novels. The pleasure which they occasionally offer is far too heavily paid for: they undermine the finest characters. They teach us to think ourselves into other men's places. Thus we acquire a taste for change. The personality becomes dissolved in pleasing figments of imagination. The reader learns to understand every point of view. Willingly he yields himself to the pursuit of other people's goals and loses sight of his own. Novels are so many wedges which the novelist, an actor with his pen, inserts into the closed personality of the reader. The better he calculates the size of the wedge and the strength of the resistance, so much the more completely does he crack open the personality of the victim. Novels should be prohibited by the State. ~ Elias Canetti
Elias Veturius quotes by Elias Canetti
For a good part of his [Kafka's] work consists of tentative steps toward perpetually changing possibilities of future. He does not acknowledge a single future, there are many; this multiplicity of futures paralyzes him and burdens his step. ~ Elias Canetti
Elias Veturius quotes by Elias Canetti
