The things that make you a functional citizen in society - manners, discretion, cordiality - don't necessarily make you a good writer. Writing needs raw truth, wants your suffering and darkness on the table, revels in a cutting mind that takes no prisoners ... ~ Natalie Goldberg
Darkness Dawns quotes by Natalie Goldberg
Superstitions, bigotries, affected devotion, prejudices, those forms all forms as they are, are tenacious of life; they have teeth and nails in their smoke, and they must be clasped close, body to body, and war must be made on them, and that without truce; for it is one of the fatalities of humanity to be condemned to eternal combat with phantoms. It is difficult to seize darkness by the throat, and to hurl it to the earth. ~ Victor Hugo
Darkness Dawns quotes by Victor Hugo
Though darkness now surrounds me,
And I cannot see the light,
I will trust the purpose I cannot see,
I'll not surrender to the night. ~ Savannah Jane McCrary
Darkness Dawns quotes by Savannah Jane McCrary
In the midst of this scoured landscape, on a suburban street, I saw the church steeple, and Lucille slowed down and pointed, and waved me on. As I passed her to enter the parking lot, I thanked her, and she gave me a wonderful smile, and just before she drove on she said, "Be blessed." That seemed to be the theme in the Deep South: kindness, generosity, a welcome. I had found it often in my traveling life in the wider world, but I found so much more of it here that I kept going, because the good will was like an embrace. Yes, there is a haunted substratum of darkness in Southern life, and though it pulses through many interactions, it takes a long while to perceive it, and even longer to understand. ~ Paul Theroux
Darkness Dawns quotes by Paul Theroux
Sometimes there's not enough light in this godforsaken world to keep the darkness at bay. ~ Jennifer Harlow
Darkness Dawns quotes by Jennifer Harlow
Look for Joy: that's God's echo, and his footprint. Happiness ... happiness and wittiness and cleverness do not count for much when the darkness falls. Joy is tougher. ~ Sean Stewart
Darkness Dawns quotes by Sean Stewart
But I didn't dream that, that interview would be the door through which I should pass from darkness into light, from isolation to friendship, companionship, knowledge, love. ~ Helen Keller
Darkness Dawns quotes by Helen Keller
To the matter at hand: though English has traditionally been a largish department, you will find there are very few viable candidates capable of assuming the mantle of DGS. In fact, if I were a betting man, I'd wager that only 10 percent of the English instruction list will answer your call for nominations. Why? First, because more than a third of our faculty now consists of temporary (adjunct) instructors who creep into the building under cover of darkness to teach their graveyard shifts of freshman comp; they are not eligible to vote or to serve. Second, because the remaining two-thirds of the faculty, bearing the scars of disenfranchisement and long-term abuse, are busy tending to personal grudges like scraps of carrion on which they gnaw in the gloom of their offices. Long story short: your options aren't pretty. ~ Julie Schumacher
Darkness Dawns quotes by Julie Schumacher
I turned on the flashlight; it cut a small circle of light from the darkness around me. ~ Azar Nafisi
Darkness Dawns quotes by Azar Nafisi
The last clear thought I have is of my grandmother's rust-colored wall clock ticking away in the darkness of my apartment - my sanctuary where I dreamed and desired and hoped for goodness and love. I wonder how long that clock will tick without anyone around to hear it. I wonder if maybe I should have taken my grandmother's silverware or jewelry instead. I wonder – if I knew then what I know now – if I still would have approached Jade that first night and invited her into my life, only to watch as she took it from me and fed it to some Godless thing, as my mother had called it. Would I still have given myself over to her, knowing it would end the same way, with the barbaric flicker of hope that this time she could love me? ~ J. Tonzelli
Darkness Dawns quotes by J. Tonzelli
Consider that this day ne'er dawns again. ~ Dante Alighieri
Darkness Dawns quotes by Dante Alighieri
Her heart felt as if it were breaking in her breast, bleeding and bleeding, young and fierce. From grief over the warm and ardent love which she had lost and still secretly mourned; from anguished joy over the pale, luminous love which drew her to the farthest boundaries of life on this earth. Through the great darkness that would come, she saw the gleam of another, gentler sun, and she sensed the fragrance of the herbs in the garden at world's end. ~ Sigrid Undset
Darkness Dawns quotes by Sigrid Undset
Bringing to light what had been hidden in darkness should not overwhelm you, but EDUCATE you. ~ Solange Nicole
Darkness Dawns quotes by Solange Nicole
-so that for these few moments it actually seems that Ruprecht could be right, that everything, or at least the small corner of everything that is the Seabrook Sports Hall, is resonating to the same chord, the same feeling, the one that over a lifetime you learn a million ways to camouflage but never quite to banish - the feeling living in a world of apartness, of distances you cannot overcome; it's almost as if the strange out-of-nowhere voice is the universe itself, some hidden aspect of it that rises momentarily over the motorway-roar of space and time to console you, to remind you that although you can't overcome the distances, you can still sing the song
out into the darkness over the separating voids, towards a fleeting moment of harmony ... ~ Paul Murray
Darkness Dawns quotes by Paul Murray
Listening with absorbed attention more to her voice than to what she was saying, and thinking how like she was, flowering through her voice into beauty in the darkness, to some butterflies he had come across in the Swiss mountains the summer before. When they were folded up they were grey, mothlike creatures that one might easily overlook, but directly they opened their wings they became the loveliest things in the world, all rose-colour or heavenly blue. So had she been to him in the daylight that afternoon,
an ordinary woman, not in any way noticeable; but now listen to her, opening into beauty on the wings of her voice! ~ Elizabeth Von Arnim
Darkness Dawns quotes by Elizabeth Von Arnim
That's the hopefulness of Les Miserables some cynics have ignored, the idea that the individual can rise above the cultural darkness and make a difference. ~ Bob Welch
Darkness Dawns quotes by Bob Welch
I just gazed at the smoke haze above Lundene, the darkness darkening a summer sky, and wished I were a bird, high in that nothingness, vanishing. Haesten ~ Bernard Cornwell
Darkness Dawns quotes by Bernard Cornwell
I build worlds around us and solar systems and creatures that only exist in dreams. I manifest colors that have flavors and darkness that's all encompassing. I go to a place unborn by man, created in a space where the natural law has no reach and the science of reason is washed away , replaced by the basic pure desire to exist, all of it coming from a place I never knew I had. ~ E.J. Mellow
Darkness Dawns quotes by E.J. Mellow
To him who in the love of Nature holds
Communion with her visible forms, she speaks
A various language; for his gayer hours
She has a voice of gladness, and a smile
And eloquence of beauty, and she glides
Into his darker musings, with a mild
And healing sympathy, that steals away
Their sharpness, ere he is aware. When thoughts
Of the last bitter hour come like a blight
Over thy spirit, and sad images
Of the stern agony, and shroud, and pall,
And breathless darkness, and the narrow house,
Make thee to shudder, and grow sick at heart; -
Go forth, under the open sky, and list
To Nature's teachings, while from all around -
Earth and her waters, and the depths of air -
Comes a still voice -
Yet a few days, and thee
The all-beholding sun shall see no more
In all his course; nor yet in the cold ground,
Where thy pale form was laid, with many tears,
Nor in the embrace of ocean, shall exist
Thy image. Earth, that nourished thee, shall claim
Thy growth, to be resolved to earth again,
And, lost each human trace, surrendering up
Thine individual being, shalt thou go
To mix for ever with the elements,
To be a brother to the insensible rock
And to the sluggish clod, which the rude swain
Turns with his share, and treads upon. The oak
Shall send his roots abroad, and pierce thy mould.
Yet not to thine etern ~ William Cullen Bryant
Darkness Dawns quotes by William Cullen Bryant
If you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday (Isa. 58:10, italics added). ~ Steve Corbett
Darkness Dawns quotes by Steve Corbett
The spiritual practice isn't about rejecting darkness - it's realizing that both the light and dark are love. ~ Drew Gerald
Darkness Dawns quotes by Drew Gerald
Please don't let the thing He loves so much be fooled by darkness. ~ Rachelle Dekker
Darkness Dawns quotes by Rachelle Dekker
To all who suffer- to all who feel discouraged, worried, or lonely- I say with love and deep concern for you, never give in. Never surrender. Never allow despair to overcome your spirit. Embrace and rely upon the Hope of Israel, for the love of the Son of God pierces all darkness, softens all sorrow, and gladdens every heart. ~ Dieter F. Uchtdorf
Darkness Dawns quotes by Dieter F. Uchtdorf
A person who does not know the history of the last 3,000 years wanders in the darkness of ignorance, unable to make sense of the reality around him ~ Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe
Darkness Dawns quotes by Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe
black eyes need no translating; the mind itself throws a shadow upon them. In them thought opens or shuts, shines forth or goes out in darkness, hangs steadfast like the setting moon or like the swift and restless lightning illumines all quarters of the sky. They who from birth have had no other speech than the trembling of their lips learn a language of the eyes, endless in expression, deep as the sea, clear as the heavens, wherein play dawn and sunset, light and shadow. The ~ Rabindranath Tagore
Darkness Dawns quotes by Rabindranath Tagore
LIGHT has no value without darkness, just as a SOLUTION has no value without a problem ~ Fela Durotoye
Darkness Dawns quotes by Fela Durotoye
Do you know how to pilot a yacht?" she asked.
"No, I don't, but I thought it would be fun to try it in pitch-black darkness in the middle of the Flores Sea," Nick said, smiling. "They light up the island, right?"
"You're such a smart-ass"
"I known, but I'm a charming smart-ass ~ Janet Evanovich
Darkness Dawns quotes by Janet Evanovich
There are, forever, swamps to be drained, cities to be created, mines to be exploited, children to be fed ... But the conquest of the physical world is not man's only duty. He is also enjoined to conquer the great wilderness of himself. The precise role of the artist, then, is to illuminate that darkness, blaze roads through vast forests, so that we will not, in all our doing, lose sight of its purpose, which is, after all, to make the world a more human dwelling place. ~ James A. Baldwin
Darkness Dawns quotes by James A. Baldwin
Dark, dark! The horror of darkness, like a shroud, wraps me and bears me on through mist and cloud. ~ Sophocles
Darkness Dawns quotes by Sophocles

BEN MARCUS, THE 1. False map, scroll, caul, or parchment. It is comprised of the first skin. In ancient times, it hung from a pole, where wind and birds inscribed its surface. Every year, it was lowered and the engravings and dents that the wind had introduced were studied. It can be large, although often it is tiny and illegible. Members wring it dry. It is a fitful chart in darkness. When properly decoded (an act in which the rule of opposite perception applies), it indicates only that we should destroy it and look elsewhere for instruction. In four, a chaplain donned the Ben Marcus and drowned in Green River. 2. The garment that is too heavy to allow movement. These cloths are designed as prison structures for bodies, dogs, persons, members. 3. Figure from which the antiperson is derived; or, simply, the antiperson. It must refer uselessly and endlessly and always to weather, food, birds, or cloth, and is produced of an even ratio of skin and hair, with declension of the latter in proportion to expansion of the former. It has been represented in other figures such as Malcolm and Laramie, although aspects of it have been co-opted for uses in John. Other members claim to inhabit its form and are refused entry to the house. The victuals of the antiperson derive from itself, explaining why it is often represented as a partial or incomplete body or system--meaning it is often missing things: a knee, the mouth, shoes, a heart ~ Ben Marcus
Darkness Dawns quotes by Ben Marcus
He was so much more than she had expected. More than a delicious body and a smile that came out of nowhere to light up the darkness of this hopeless place. ~ Aria Kane
Darkness Dawns quotes by Aria Kane
For The Fallen"
With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children,
England mourns for her dead across the sea.
Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit,
Fallen in the cause of the free.
Solemn the drums thrill;
Death august and royal
Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres,
There is music in the midst of desolation
And a glory that shines upon our tears.

They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted;
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

They mingle not with their laughing comrades again;
They sit no more at familiar tables of home;
They have no lot in our labour of the day-time; They sleep beyond England's foam.

But where our desires are and our hopes profound,
Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight,
To the innermost heart of their own land they are known
As the stars are known to the Night;
As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust,
Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain;
As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness,
To the end, to the end, they remain. ~ Laurence Binyon
Darkness Dawns quotes by Laurence Binyon
The child that was human civilization had opened the door to her home and glanced outside. The endless night terrified her so much that she shuddered against the expansive and profound darkness, and shut the door firmly. ~ Liu Cixin
Darkness Dawns quotes by Liu Cixin
The unique idea of [The Darkest Time] movie is because in usual if you are in darkness, you are scared. But this movie is the opposite. In darkness, you are okay. ~ Timur Bekmambetov
Darkness Dawns quotes by Timur Bekmambetov
Why such haste? For a foolish hope? Why did his heart always insist on believing that there was a light in all the darkness? ~ Cornelia Funke
Darkness Dawns quotes by Cornelia Funke
Even if the circumstances around you are like darkness, believe that God will give you light ~ Sunday Adelaja
Darkness Dawns quotes by Sunday Adelaja
Perhaps, when it got utterly dark, the peace of the darkness would become the same as light so that my last experience would become as mysterious and musical as my first, so that in my last darkness there might not be the same need of understanding anything so far away as the world anymore. ~ Derek Raymond
Darkness Dawns quotes by Derek Raymond
A person knows when they're in darkness, even when they can't see. -Nightblood ~ Brandon Sanderson
Darkness Dawns quotes by Brandon Sanderson
I was once in darkness, but now, I see a bright light on my path. ~ Lailah Gifty Akita
Darkness Dawns quotes by Lailah Gifty Akita
And as the morning steals upon the night, melting the darkness, so their rising senses begin to chase the ignorant fumes that mantle their clearer reason. ~ William Shakespeare
Darkness Dawns quotes by William Shakespeare
Lost in the forest, I broke off a dark twig
and lifted its whisper to my thirsty lips:
maybe it was the voice of the rain crying,
a cracked bell, or a torn heart.
Something from far off: it seemed
deep and secret to me, hidden by the earth,
a shout muffled by huge autumns,
by the moist half-open darkness of the leaves.
Wakening from the dreaming forest there, the hazel-sprig
sang under my tongue, its drifting fragrance
climbed up through my conscious mind
as if suddenly the roots I had left behind
cried out to me, the land I had lost with my childhood - -
and I stopped, wounded by the wandering scent. ~ Pablo Neruda
Darkness Dawns quotes by Pablo Neruda
The dialectic between change and continuity is a painful but deeply instructive one, in personal life as in the life of a people. To "see the light" too often has meant rejecting the treasures found in darkness. ~ Adrienne Rich
Darkness Dawns quotes by Adrienne Rich
Boston. Fucking horrible.
I remember, when 9/11 went down, my reaction was, "Well, I've had it with humanity."
But I was wrong. I don't know what's going to be revealed to be behind all of this mayhem. One human insect or a poisonous mass of broken sociopaths.
But here's what I DO know. If it's one person or a HUNDRED people, that number is not even a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of a percent of the population on this planet. You watch the videos of the carnage and there are people running TOWARDS the destruction to help out. (Thanks FAKE Gallery founder and owner Paul Kozlowski for pointing this out to me). This is a giant planet and we're lucky to live on it but there are prices and penalties incurred for the daily miracle of existence. One of them is, every once in awhile, the wiring of a tiny sliver of the species gets snarled and they're pointed towards darkness.
But the vast majority stands against that darkness and, like white blood cells attacking a virus, they dilute and weaken and eventually wash away the evil doers and, more importantly, the damage they wreak. This is beyond religion or creed or nation. We would not be here if humanity were inherently evil. We'd have eaten ourselves alive long ago.
So when you spot violence, or bigotry, or intolerance or fear or just garden-variety misogyny, hatred or ignorance, just look it in the eye and think, "The good outnumber you, and we always will. ~ Patton Oswalt
Darkness Dawns quotes by Patton Oswalt
It is when darkness prevails that I sit by the window to look past all those electricity-free houses, smell the sweet scent of a calm Gazan night, feel the fresh air going straight to my heart, and think of you, of me, of Palestine, of the crack, of the blank wall, of you, of Mama, of you, of my history class, of you, of God, of Palestine - of our incomplete story. ~ Refaat Alareer
Darkness Dawns quotes by Refaat Alareer
Where reasons are given, we don't need faith. Where only darkness surrounds us, we have no means for seeing except by faith. ~ Elisabeth Elliot
