In the dark, the little live Christmas tree, two feet tall, sparkled with tiny coloured lights, like the tears I saw glistening in my brother's eyes. ~ V.C. Andrews
Coloured Lights quotes by V.C. Andrews
Teachers should be made aware of visual stress symptoms and the potential difference coloured lights, overlays and lenses could make to a learners perception. ~ Adele Devine
Coloured Lights quotes by Adele Devine
A dozen or more boats on the lake swung their rosy and moon–like lanterns low on the water, that reflected as from a fire. In the distance, the steamer twanged and thrummed and washed with her faintly–splashing paddles, trailing her strings of coloured lights, and occasionally lighting up the whole scene luridly with an effusion of fireworks, Roman candles and sheafs of stars and other simple effects, illuminating the surface of the water, and showing the boats creeping round, low down. Then the lovely darkness fell again, the lanterns and the little threaded lights glimmered softly, there was a muffled knocking of oars and a waving of music.

Gudrun paddled almost imperceptibly. Gerald could see, not far ahead, the rich blue and the rose globes of Ursula's lanterns swaying softly cheek to cheek as Birkin rowed, and iridescent, evanescent gleams chasing in the wake. He was aware, too, of his own delicately coloured lights casting their softness behind him. ~ D.H. Lawrence
Coloured Lights quotes by D.H. Lawrence
I nod like I'm not at all unnerved by this new cold side to him. Not cruel like his father. Not warm like the husband who sought me out on quiet nights. Something in between. This Linden has never woven his fingers through mine, never chosen me from a line of weary Gathered girls, never said he loved me in a myriad of coloured lights. We are nothing to each other. ~ Lauren DeStefano
Coloured Lights quotes by Lauren DeStefano
Fluorescent lights on the ceiling lit up the white Formica top of her desk like an operating table, white-sand beach at high noon, French fries under the heat lamp at McDonald's. ~ Dennis Vickers
Coloured Lights quotes by Dennis Vickers
Like many of the kids I write about, I once was a runaway myself - and a few (but not all) of the other writers in the series also come from troubled backgrounds. That early experience influences my fiction, no doubt, but I don't think it's necessary to come from such a background in order to write a good Bordertown tale. To me, "running away to Bordertown" is as much a metaphorical act as an actual one. These tales aren't just for kids who have literally run away from home, but also for every kid, every person, who "runs away" from a difficult or constrictive past to build a different kind of life in some new place. Some of us "run away" to college . . . or we "run away" to a distant city or state . . . or we "run away" from a safe, secure career path to follow our passions or artistic muse. We "run away" from places we don't belong, or from families we have never fit into. We "run away" to find ourselves, or to find others like ourselves, or to find a place where we finally truly belong. And that kind of "running away from home" - the everyday, metaphorical kind - can be just as hard, lonely, and disorienting as crossing the Nevernever to Bordertown . . . particularly when you're in your teens, or early twenties, and your resources (both inner and outer) are still limited. I want to tell stories for young people who are making that journey, or contemplating making that journey. Stories in which friendship, community, and art is the "magic" that lights the way.

(s ~ Terri Windling
Coloured Lights quotes by Terri Windling
One day, The road came. The road brought with it beer and cigarettes. The road brought Coca-Cola and disposable razors. The road brought all the wonderful things that we westerners know and hold close. But where did the road go? A few of the younger men decided to find out. They rode a buffalo cart along the road until they came to a town and then a train station. They hid in a bunch of rice sacks and took the train to the city, to the lights, to the jobs. There was this thing called money, with it you could buy stuff. You could gamble, drink, and be merry. After a period of two years, one of the young men returned to the village driving a new car. He showed the villagers all the beautiful things that he had bought. He said that there was work for everyone in the cities. He took another young man and two young women with him. They were pretty in a rural way and very hungry for money. Money was good. They liked it. It was a great adventure. ~ James A. Newman
Coloured Lights quotes by James A. Newman
The sun is nice but it lights things up so much that you can't see very far ... The night time is better. It stretches your soul to the stars. ~ Fynn
Coloured Lights quotes by Fynn
I know that a brighter view may be taken, and if the sadder has been emphasized in these
letters, it is only because we feel you know less about it.
For more has been written about the successes than about the failures, and it seems to us that it is more important that you should know about the reverses than about the successes of the war. We shall have all
eternity to celebrate the victories, but we have only the few hours before sunset in which to win them. We are not winning them as we should, because the fact of the reverses is so little realized, and the needed reinforcements are not forthcoming, as they would be if
the position were thoroughly understood. Reinforcements of men and women are needed, but, far above all, reinforcements of prayer. And so we have tried to tell you the truth the uninteresting, unromantic truth
about the heathen as we find them, the work as it is. More workers are needed. No words can tell how much they are needed, how much they are wanted here. But we will never try to allure anyone to think of coming by painting coloured pictures, when the facts are in black and white. What if black and white will never attract like colours ? We care not for it ; our business
is to tell the truth. The work is not a pretty thing, to be looked at and admired. It is a fight. And battlefields are not beautiful.
But if one is truly called of God, all the difficulties and discouragements only intensify the Call. If things were ~ Amy Carmichael
Coloured Lights quotes by Amy Carmichael
The one thing I've always liked about that boy. As much as I hate his body language screaming he owns you, with him next to you ain't no one gonna mess with my little girl.It may as well be written on his chest in neon lights. ~ Elizabeth Reyes
Coloured Lights quotes by Elizabeth Reyes
There are two lights in this universe: The light and the Reason! ~ Mehmet Murat Ildan
Coloured Lights quotes by Mehmet Murat Ildan
But he [Depression] just gives me that dark smile, settles into my favorite chair, puts his feet on my table and lights a cigar, filling the place with his awful smoke. Loneliness watches and sighs, then climbs into my bed and pulls the covers over himself, fully dressed, shoes and all. He's going to make me sleep with him again tonight, I just know it. ~ Elizabeth Gilbert
Coloured Lights quotes by Elizabeth Gilbert
If all the world were green, there would be no such thing as the color green. Similarly, men cannot know what it is to be together without otherwise knowing what it is to be apart. If all the world were love, then, how could love exist? This is why we turn away from each other on moments of great happiness and closeness. How can we know happiness and closeness without contrasting them, like lights? ~ Jack Kerouac
Coloured Lights quotes by Jack Kerouac
We waste our lights in vain, like lamps by day. ~ William Shakespeare
Coloured Lights quotes by William Shakespeare
In excited conversation we have glimpses of the universe, hints of power native to the soul, far-darting lights and shadows of an Andes landscape, such as we can hardly attain in lone meditation. Here are oracles sometimes profusely given, to which the memory goes back in barren hours. ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
Coloured Lights quotes by Ralph Waldo Emerson
The abandoned traffic lights stare at us like empty eye sockets. Fields have gone to weed. There's a little town of houses that have been haphazardly repaired by boards and scraps of metal. ~ Lauren DeStefano
Coloured Lights quotes by Lauren DeStefano
Anything you do to help better humanity is never a waste of time~Nor is done in vain! Keep your work up...keep moving forward! Your beaming lights will always help make things brighter for all! ~ Timothy Pina
Coloured Lights quotes by Timothy Pina
I wonder, now, about interrogation chambers: why do they think bright light brings the truth out of people? They should try the seduction of shadows, where you cannot watch your words hit their target. ~ Anna Funder
Coloured Lights quotes by Anna Funder
The trouble with us
daydreamers is,
we tend to watch
the world through
a coloured lens.

Then one day
we fall
and the lens cracks. ~ The Dreamer
Coloured Lights quotes by The Dreamer
So are you, sunshine," Paige replied. "Bad night?"
Even though he didn't take off his sunglasses, I knew he was staring straight at me.
"I've had better," he said with an entirely straight face, while I coloured up from head to toe. "I've had worse."

"Now, now children," Paige intervened, entirely oblivious to the extreme level of bitchy subtext flying across the table. "Let's not have fisticuffs … Can we kiss and make up?"
Nick turned up one corner of his mouth and nodded. "I'm game if you are, Vanessa."
"I think she means figuratively," I said, adding cream to my coffee. "I'm a professional."
"Really?" He rested his elbows on the table and pushed his glasses up over his eyebrows. "I probably owe you some money then. ~ Linsdey Kelk
Coloured Lights quotes by Linsdey Kelk
You should have heard the boatman who brought me up here from the Glades. Fire in the northern sky, lights in the marshes, a black dog heard barking through the night. Doesn't occur to anyone to wonder how exactly you can tell it's a black dog just from the fucking bark it makes. ~ Richard K. Morgan
Coloured Lights quotes by Richard K. Morgan
And now, having endeavoured to suit everyone by many weddings, few deaths, and as much prosperity as the eternal fitness of things will permit, let the music stop, the lights die out, and the curtain fall for ever on the March family. ~ Louisa May Alcott
Coloured Lights quotes by Louisa May Alcott
I love you as only a lover can. Less depressed, less obsessed, I am better than ever able to love your hair, which has blond lights in it, and your remarkable eyes, the blue of my Nana's chipped china. I love the smell of your skin, impossible to describe except to say it's a confluence of many pungent things, and I love your chest with the disks of your nipples, and your thighs striated with sweat, and your back and your breath while you are above me. ~ Lauren Slater
Coloured Lights quotes by Lauren Slater
Christmas is not in tinsel and lights and outward show. The secret lies in an inner glow. It's lighting a fire inside the heart. Good will and joy a vital part. It's higher thought and a greater plan. It's glorious dream in the soul of man. ~ Wilferd Peterson
Coloured Lights quotes by Wilferd Peterson
But in these few moments that we have here on Earth, are we going to torture ourselves? Or are we going to allow our lights to be dimmed? How do we expect men to respect women or women to rise to more power when we don't respect our queendom in the same way that men respect their kingdom? ~ Shailene Woodley
Coloured Lights quotes by Shailene Woodley
The timing of the electrical failure seemed dramatic and perfectly correct, as if the lights had said, You have no need for sight. Listen. ~ Ann Patchett
Coloured Lights quotes by Ann Patchett
Confidence has brought them out into the light, but they seem to have forgotten - light's no good for creatures of the night. ~ Darren Shan
Coloured Lights quotes by Darren Shan
At times I am gripped by an absurd desire: that the sentence I am about to write be the one the woman is reading at that same moment. The idea mesmerizes me so much that I convince myself it is true: I write the sentence hastily, get up, go to the window, train my spyglass to check the effect of my sentence in her gaze, in the curl of her lips, in the cigarette she lights, in the shifts of her body in the deck chair, in her legs, which she crosses or extends. ~ Italo Calvino
Coloured Lights quotes by Italo Calvino
I haven't felt the excitement for so many years. I feel guilty beyond words about these things. When we're back-stage and the lights go out, and the manic roar of the crowd begins, it does not affect me. The fact is, I can't fool you. It isn't fair to you or to me. The worst crime I can think of is to trick people by faking it, and pretending to be having 100% fun. ~ Robert Hilburn
Coloured Lights quotes by Robert Hilburn
Perhaps there will be a slight streak of green, a patch that will deepen and then grow. Then another patch on the horizon, like a green searchlight. And then shivering curtains of light can fill the sky, or looping spirals, or flickering flames of green and purple, and candy-apple red. It feels as if they should be accompanied by dramatic sounds, the bangs of fireworks or the roars of rockets. But these are utterly silent, almost solemn in their dancing. And yet they can be comforting in their own way; as if in this remote and frozen wilderness there's something else out there that is alive. ~ Gabrielle Walker
Coloured Lights quotes by Gabrielle Walker
José

What now, José?
The party's over,
the lights are off,
the crowd's gone,
the night's gone cold,
what now, José?
what now, you?
you without a name,
who mocks the others,
you who write poetry
who love, protest?
what now, José?

You have no wife,
you have no speech
you have no affection,
you can't drink,
you can't smoke,
you can't even spit,
the night's gone cold,
the day didn't come,
the tram didn't come,
laughter didn't come
utopia didn't come
and everything ended
and everything fled
and everything rotted
what now, José?

what now, José?
Your sweet words,
your instance of fever,
your feasting and fasting,
your library,
your gold mine,
your glass suit,
your incoherence,
your hate - what now?

Key in hand
you want to open the door,
but no door exists;
you want to die in the sea,
but the sea has dried;
you want to go to Minas
but Minas is no longer there.
José, what now?

If you screamed,
if you moaned,
if you played
a Viennese waltz,
if you slept,
if you tired,
if you died…
But you don't die,
you're stubborn, José!

Alone in the dark
like a wild animal,
without tradition,
without a naked wall
to lean against,
without a black horse
that flees gallopin ~ Carlos Drummond De Andrade
Coloured Lights quotes by Carlos Drummond De Andrade
They declaim against the passions without bothering to think that it is from their flame philosophy lights its torch. ~ Marquis De Sade
Coloured Lights quotes by Marquis De Sade
People, her people at least, were always chasing shattered hopes. A father gazing down on dead soil, with a brood of hollow-cheeked children sitting around a barren table. A lonely maid cleaning grates and waiting for a lover who by now wouldn't even recall her name. A weary labourer trudging miles between the hiring fairs, carrying his spade, clothes soiled from sleeping in damp fields. They held candles to storms, her people. They saw their lights extinguished as cruel winds of fate blew. ~ Paul Reid
Coloured Lights quotes by Paul Reid
A friend of ours, the wife of a pastor at a church in Colorado, had once told me about something her daughter, Hannah, said when she was three years old. After the morning service was over one Sunday, Hannah tugged on her mom's skirt and asked. "Mommy, why do some people in church have lights over their heads and some don't?" At the time, I remember thinking two things: First, I would've knelt down and asked Hannah, "Did I have a light over my head? Please say yes!" I also wondered what Hannah had seen, and whether she had seen it because, like my son, she had a childlike faith. ~ Todd Burpo
Coloured Lights quotes by Todd Burpo
Harry," said Basil Hallward, looking him straight in the face, "every portrait that is painted with feeling is a portrait of the artist, not of the sitter. The sitter is merely the accident, the occasion. It is not he who is revealed by the painter; it is rather the painter who, on the coloured canvas, reveals himself. The reason I will not exhibit this picture is that I am afraid that I have shown in it the secret of my own soul. ~ Oscar Wilde
Coloured Lights quotes by Oscar Wilde
Lights are to drama what music is to the lyrics of a song. The greatest part of my success in the theatre I attribute to my feeling for colors, translated into effects of light. ~ David Belasco
Coloured Lights quotes by David Belasco
I was a real sucker for shiny lights and tall buildings. ~ Camille Perri
Coloured Lights quotes by Camille Perri
I called Mom from the hotel during the period of peace, I'd turned out all of the lights and closed the curtains in pursuit of sensory deprivation. It was Black and sensationless. All There was in the room was my voice and mom's voice trickling out of the phone's earpiece, and this feeling passed through me-this feeling of what a gift it is that people are able to speak to each other while they're alive. These casual conversations, this familiar voice heard through a Las Vegas hotel room telephone. It was strange to realize that, in one since, all we are is our voice. ~ Douglas Coupland
Coloured Lights quotes by Douglas Coupland
It's just cool to do something different and branch out and dabble in different genres. ~ Lights
Coloured Lights quotes by Lights
Put the lights out, we shall see better. ~ D.H. Lawrence
Coloured Lights quotes by D.H. Lawrence
I remember going to the theatre when I was little and the lights going down and just getting really scared about what was going to happen up there. ~ Paul Dano
Coloured Lights quotes by Paul Dano
The evenings were the worst. I stood at the window of my hotel room and looked at the traffic and the thousands of little lights and the people who all seemed to be on their way to something. ~ Herman Koch
Coloured Lights quotes by Herman Koch
He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. ~ Thomas Jefferson
Coloured Lights quotes by Thomas Jefferson
Rapid City," he said with a flourish at the lights below.
"We always stopped there on the way home from camping," Baldwin said. "There's this great ice-cream stand just off the highway. But I guess we aren't going for ice cream, are we?"
"Probably not," Ray said. "Unless it's being served by monsters."
"That could be cool," Baldwin said. "An ice-cream fight. Like a snowball fight, with fifty flavors of snow. Good, safe fun. No one ever died from ice cream."
"Unless they drowned you in a giant vat of it," Reyna said. "Or forced you to eat it until you choked. Or -"
"You're no fun at all, you know that?" Baldwin said.
"Depends on your definition of fun. ~ K.L. Armstrong
Coloured Lights quotes by K.L. Armstrong
There are two kinds of light - the glow that illuminates, and the glare that obscures. ~ James Thurber
Coloured Lights quotes by James Thurber
Remember folks stop lights timed for 35 mph are also timed for 70 mph. ~ Jim Samuels
Coloured Lights quotes by Jim Samuels
The UFO was bouncing around the 747. It was a huge ball with lights running around it ... Well, I've been involved in a lot of cover-ups with the FAA. When we gave the presentation to the Reagan staff, they had all those people swear that this never happened. But they never had me swear it never happened. I can tell you what I've seen with my own eyes. I've got a videotape. I've got the voice tape. I've got the reports that were filed that will confirm what I've been telling you. ~ John Callaghan
Coloured Lights quotes by John Callaghan
A new moon lay on its back, and stars were out. Here, away from lights and sounds of town or village, the night was deep, the black sky stretching, fathomless, away among the spheres to some unimaginable world where gods walked, and suns and moons showered down like petals falling. Some power there is that draws men's eyes and hearts up and outward, beyond the heavy clay that fastens them to earth. Music can take them, and the moon's light, and, I suppose, love, though I had not known it then, except in worship. ~ Mary Stewart
