Knowing God is a matter of grace. It is a relationship in which the initiative throughout is with God - as it must be, since God is so completely above us and we have so completely forfeited all claim on his favor by our sins. ~ J.I. Packer
Claim On quotes by J.I. Packer
That, I decided, was what it meant to be a slave: your past didn't matter, in the present you were invisible and you had no claim on the future. ~ Lawrence Hill
Claim On quotes by Lawrence Hill
I ain't got no blood claim on you, and the Lord in Heaven knows I want you to have a good life with your own people. But" - her huge bass voice broke up into little squeaky pieces - "but it's killing me to see you go. ~ Katherine Paterson
Claim On quotes by Katherine Paterson
Aren't you afraid they'll arrest you? (Shahara)
I wasn't a convict, Dagan. I was an illegally purchased slave. My owner has no legal claim on me. And I'm no longer a kid learning my powers. I'm a full-grown man with an ax I want to bury in the forehead of anyone dumb enough to come at me. I defy the bastards to try something now. (Nero) ~ Sherrilyn Kenyon
Claim On quotes by Sherrilyn Kenyon
Song

When I am dead, my dearest,
Sing no sad songs for me;
Plant thou no roses at my head,
Nor shady cypress tree:
Be the green grass above me
With showers and dewdrops wet;
And if thou wilt, remember,
And if thou wilt, forget.

I shall not see the shadows,
I shall not feel the rain;
I shall not hear the nightingale
Sing on, as if in pain:
And dreaming through the twilight
That doth not rise nor set,
Haply I may remember,
And haply may forget.

Sir Thomas Wyatt has been credited with introducing the Petrarchan sonnet into the English language. Wyatt's father had been one of Henry VII's Privy Councilors and remained a trusted adviser when Henry VIII came to the throne in 1509. Wyatt followed his father to court, but it seems the young poet may have fallen in love with the king's mistress, Anne Boleyn. Their acquaintance is certain, although whether or not the two actually shared a romantic relationship remains unknown. But in his poetry, Wyatt called his mistress Anna and there do seem to be correspondences. For instance, this poem might well have been written about the King's claim on Anne Boleyn: ~ Christina Rossetti
Claim On quotes by Christina Rossetti
Stake a claim on love. Believe in God. ~ Elizabeth B. Knaus
Claim On quotes by Elizabeth B. Knaus
When Jesus tells us to give all we have...we don't have authority to decline. We are not our own; we have no claim on our own lives. ~ Chris Tiegreen
Claim On quotes by Chris Tiegreen
This formulation will not please the mass man or the collective believer. For the former the policy of the State is the supreme principle of thought and action. Indeed, this was the purpose for which he was enlightened, and accordingly the mass man grants the individual a right to exist only in so far as he is a function of the State. The believer, on the other hand, while admitting that the State has a moral and factual claim on him, confesses to the belief that not only man but the State that rules him is subject to the overlordship of "God," and that, in case of doubt, the supreme decision will be made by God and not by the State. ~ C. G. Jung
Claim On quotes by C. G. Jung
Diversity… is not polite accommodation. Instead, diversity is, in action, the sometimes painful awareness that other people, other races, other voices, other habits of mind, have as much integrity of being, as much claim on the world as you do. ~ William Chase
Claim On quotes by William Chase
I have fallen in love with you Sasha Ava Stryker. I am afraid it is eternal and binding. I wanted to stake my claim on you tonight. To make you mine – for now and infinity to come. ~ Farrah Naseem
Claim On quotes by Farrah Naseem
When one comes to think of it, there are no such things as divine, immutable, or inalienable rights. Rights are things we get when we are strong enough to make good our claim on them. ~ Helen Keller
Claim On quotes by Helen Keller
8Do I say these things on human authority? Does not the Law say the same? 9For it is written in the Law of Moses, "You shall not muzzle an ox when it treads out the grain." Is it for oxen that God is concerned? 10Does he not certainly speak for our sake? It was written for our sake, because the plowman should plow in hope and the thresher thresh in hope of sharing in the crop. 11If we have sown spiritual things among you, is it too much if we reap material things from you? 12If others share this rightful claim on you, do not we even more? ~ Anonymous
Claim On quotes by Anonymous
If you're concerned about your health, you should probably avoid products that make health claims. Why? Because a health claim on a food product is a strong indication it's not really food, and food is what you want to eat ~ Michael Pollan
Claim On quotes by Michael Pollan
Tread lightly, little one." He warned. "You don't want to push me. Not tonight." Her eyes darkened with anger, narrowing as she met his gaze. "Really? And why is that Raj?" ... "I am tired of you thinking you have the right to control me. You are not my boyfriend, and you sure as hell are not my keeper, so from where I stand, you've got no claim on me what so ever. Like the song says, you don't want me for yourself so let me find someone else. It's shit or get off the pot time, Raj. It's now or never, Time to-" She gave a shriek as Raj swung an arm around her waist and lifted her off her feet. He threaded the fingers of one hand through her hair and pulled it aside, freeing the long line of her neck. "Then I choose now," he growled and sank his fangs into the velvet skin of her neck puncturing the fragile walls of her jugular. ~ D.B. Reynolds
Claim On quotes by D.B. Reynolds
My hope is that the Pope Francis visit to Cuba will remind all the Cuban citizens that they possess dignity and fundamental rights that come from God and that the Castro regime has no claim on changing what is 100% God-given. ~ Marco Rubio
Claim On quotes by Marco Rubio
In a perfect Friendship this Appreciative love is, I think, often so great and so firmly based that each member of the circle feels, in his secret heart, humbled before the rest. Sometimes he wonders what he is doing there among his betters. He is lucky beyond desert to be in such company. Especially when the whole group is together; each bringing out all that is best, wisest, or funniest in all the others. Those are the golden sessions; when four or five of us after a hard day's walk have come to our inn; when our slippers are on, our feet spread out toward the blaze and our drinks are at our elbows; when the whole world, and something beyond the world, opens itself to our minds as we talk; and no one has any claim on or any responsibility for another, but all are freemen and equals as if we had first met an hour ago, while at the same time an Affection mellowed by the years enfolds us. Life - natural life - has no better gift to give. Who could have deserved it? ~ C.S. Lewis
Claim On quotes by C.S. Lewis
I kissed him, let him kiss me, let him clutch my hips, curl his fingers into
the fabric of my shirt, slide his hands around my waist and splay them
against my back, pull me infinitesimally closer. He made a sound, a growl or
purr, some predatory noise that rumbled in his throat, then said my name. And
this time, it wasn't a question but a sound of victory, a claim on his prize. ~ Chloe Neill
Claim On quotes by Chloe Neill
She was mine. Didn't she know that? Because my body was screaming it - demanding me to stake my claim on her. ~ Wendy Higgins
Claim On quotes by Wendy Higgins
You don't have any claim on the money, and there's no proof I ever saw or touched or spent a dollar of it. You want to take me to court?"
"You're in court right now," Parker said. ~ Richard Stark
Claim On quotes by Richard Stark
We came to find me home, boy, but this is not the place. Me people once lived, here, 'tis true, but the darkness that creeped into Mithral Hall has put an end to me claim on it. I've no wish to return once I'm clear of the stench of the place, know that in yer stubborn head. ~ R.A. Salvatore
Claim On quotes by R.A. Salvatore
My opinion is that it is a very extraordinary thing for anyone to be upset by such a topic. Why should anyone be shattered by the though of hell? It is not compulsory for anyone to go there. Those who do, do so by their own choice, and against the will of God, and they can only get into hell by defying and resisting all the work of Providence and grace. It is their own will that takes them there, not God's. In damning them He is only ratifying their own decision
a decision which He has left entirely to their own choice. Nor will He ever hold our weakness alone responsible for our damnation. Our weakness should not terrify us: it is the source of our strength. Libenter gloriabor in infirmitatibus meis ut inhabitet in me virtus Christi. Power is made perfect in infirmity, and our very helplessness is all the more potent a claim on that Divine Mercy Who calls to Himself the poor, the little ones, the heavily burdened. ~ Thomas Merton
Claim On quotes by Thomas Merton
Manon smirked at Lorcan. "Your claim on her, male, is at the very bottom of the list. ~ Sarah J. Maas
Claim On quotes by Sarah J. Maas
The New Right, in many cases, is doing nothing less than placing a heretical claim on Christian faith that distorts, confuses, and destroys the opportunity for a biblical understanding of Jesus Christ and of his gospel for millions of people. ~ Mark Hatfield
Claim On quotes by Mark Hatfield
The fact that a man has no claim on others ... does not preclude or prohibit good will among men and does not make it immoral to offer or to accept voluntary, non-sacrificial assistance. ~ Ayn Rand
Claim On quotes by Ayn Rand
You might be locked in a world not of your own making, her eyes said, but you still have a claim on how it is shaped. You still have responsibilities. ~ Barack Obama
Claim On quotes by Barack Obama
He felt like a man whose fever
had broken, flush with the euphoria of the first, tenuous return of strength - still
weak, but buoyant with the hope of an eventual return to wholeness. The sickness in
his soul, however, laid a jealous claim on him. ~ Gaelen Foley
Claim On quotes by Gaelen Foley
These thoughts were as familiar to her, and as comforting, as the precise configuration of her knees, their matching but competing, symmetrical and reversible, look. A second thought always followed the first, one mystery bred another: Was everyone else really as alive as she was? For example, did her sister really matter to herself, was she as valuable to herself as Briony was? Was being Cecilia just as vivid an affair as being Briony? Did her sister also have a real self concealed behind a breaking wave, and did she spend time thinking about it, with a finger held up to her face? Did everybody, including her father, Betty, Hardman? If the answer was yes, then the world, the social world, was unbearably complicated, with two billion voices, and everyone's thoughts striving in equal importance and everyone's claim on life as intense, and everyone thinking they were unique, when no one was. One could drown in irrelevance. But if the answer was no, then Briony was surrounded by machines, intelligent and pleasant enough on the outside, but lacking the bright and private inside feeling she had. This was sinister and lonely, as well as unlikely. For, though it offended her sense of order, she knew it was overwhelmingly probably that everyone else had thoughts like hers. She knew this, but only in a rather arid way; she didn't really feel it. ~ Ian McEwan
Claim On quotes by Ian McEwan
Although we cannot change the past, we can stake our claim on it and make it ours. We can know for ourselves where we have been and use that wisdom to build our future. ~ Ashley Warner
Claim On quotes by Ashley Warner
We really are immortal in the sense that Christ's Atonement conquers death, both physical and spiritual. And provided we have so lived Today that we have claim on the Atonement's cleansing grace, we will live forever with God. This life is not so much a time for getting and accumulating as it is a time for giving and becoming. Mortality is the battlefield upon which justice and mercy meet. But they need not meet as adversaries, for they are reconciled in the Atonement of Jesus Christ for all who wisely use Today. ~ Lance B. Wickman
Claim On quotes by Lance B. Wickman
Mis-define the law of brotherly love by giving men a claim on their neighbors and you have destroyed freedom, justified despotism, and assumed that there can be a master mind, in an ordinary human being, as the mind of God. ~ Frederick Nymeyer
Claim On quotes by Frederick Nymeyer
writing it helped me to believe it. It staked some claim on the truth. ~ Amanda Lindhout
Claim On quotes by Amanda Lindhout
For example, your man might think: I don't steal. Maybe on my taxes, everyone does that, but not in the way I heard so and so stole from his company. See? Those men for whose opinion he cares approve of embezzlement in one area, not the other. He uses them to maintain a claim on goodness while at the same time stealing. ~ Geoffrey Wood
Claim On quotes by Geoffrey Wood
This is why people cry at the movies: because everybody's doomed. No one in a movie can help themselves in any way. Their fate has already staked its claim on them from the moment they appear onscreen. ~ John Darnielle
Claim On quotes by John Darnielle
Mom, how do you know if the guy is the guy?"
You mean if he'll be a good husband?" She pauses, then says "The ticket is for the man to love the woman more than she loves him."
Shouldn't it be equal?"
Mom cackles. "It can never be equal."
But what if the woman loves the man more?"
A life of hell awaits her. As women, the deck is stacked against us because time is our enemy. We age, while men season. And trust me, there are plenty of women out there looking for a man, and they don't mind staking a claim on somebody else's husband, no matter how old, creaky, and deaf they are. ~ Adriana Trigiani
Claim On quotes by Adriana Trigiani
On economic matters Garrett had a brilliant simplicity. In November 1913, while editor of the Annalist, he began a monthly column on money in Everybody's, writing as John Parr. One of the most common questions from readers was why the government simply didn't print money to spend on public works, instead of borrowing it at interest. It was a variant of the Coxey idea. Garrett explained that money is not wealth, but a claim on wealth, and that you do not add to wealth by creating more claims to it.4 ~ Bruce Ramsey
Claim On quotes by Bruce Ramsey
People spoke so reverently of affection. For me, it seemed a torment. I couldn't believe people enjoyed these feelings. How could someone relish this excruciating need to secure a claim on another human? ~ S.J. Kincaid
Claim On quotes by S.J. Kincaid
Neighbourliness is not a quality in other people, it is simply their claim on ourselves. ~ Dietrich Bonhoeffer
Claim On quotes by Dietrich Bonhoeffer
Reference to the deadness of the past is a way of staking a claim on it. But historians must be open, as ethnographers try to be, to the shock of the unpredictability and difference of the past, which means open to the possibility of the past living in its insistence on telling its own story and so confounding us. Only in this way can the past teach us something new about ourselves, about the limits of our imaginings and ways of knowing, and even of our particular and distinctive ways of being human. ~ Robert A. Orsi
Claim On quotes by Robert A. Orsi
Callie was his. He'd made mistakes. Mistakes that had cost them both more than he could ever imagine. But she was his, and he had every intention of reasserting his claim on her. ~ Maya Banks
Claim On quotes by Maya Banks
You think it's all rather too "New Age" to be taken seriously, eh?'
'Not at all.'
'But it's an ancient discipline ... '
'New Age disciplines invariably are,' Beede said, disparagingly, 'but in the modern world they lack context - we just pick them up and then toss them back down again, we consume them. They have no moral claim on us. No moral value. And without that they're rendered meaningless, fatuous, even. ~ Nicola Barker
Claim On quotes by Nicola Barker
For now, as he drifted toward dreaming, what came to him were not images of grappling and lust, but a sort of phantom copy of the bed where he lay, a dream of future days where he shared such a bed with a woman who had a claim on him, and who claimed him in return. ~ Karen A. Wyle
Claim On quotes by Karen A. Wyle
Caleb touched the brim of his hat and nodded an acknowledgment to Rupert, then spoke to Lily in the clipped, authoritative tone she'd heard him use with his soldiers. "We'll leave for the fort tomorrow," he announced. "You may do whatever you please, Major," Lily responded coldly, "but I'm staying here. I have business to attend to." "Shall I explain to your brother why I have a claim on you?" Caleb asked, his tone a mockery of indulgence. Lily felt her face go hot as a stove stoked for cooking. Rupert looked pleasantly baffled. "Did I miss something here?" Caleb relented just in time to save himself from a kick to the shins. "Tomorrow," he repeated. And then he excused himself and started to walk away. ~ Linda Lael Miller
Claim On quotes by Linda Lael Miller
Only they who fulfill God's commands have a claim on the Lord. ~ Leonard Ravenhill
Claim On quotes by Leonard Ravenhill
We all wish to be of importance in one way or another. The child coughs with might and main, since it has no other claim on the company. ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
Claim On quotes by Ralph Waldo Emerson
Knowing too much about other people puts you in their power, they have a claim on you, you are forced to understand their reasons for doing things and then you are weakened. ~ Margaret Atwood
Claim On quotes by Margaret Atwood
You look like a goddess," he murmured as he raked his eyes down her form.
And she melted into a puddle.
"Thank you." She tried to sound cool and sophisticated. "I much prefer wearing a gown that's not too tight."
"Except where it should be." He dropped his gaze pointedly to her bosom.
The frank admiration in his eyes made her glad that she'd let Betty guide her choice for tonight. After that other scandalous gown, she'd been reluctant to wear anything low cut, but this one did look beautiful on her, even with its décolletage. Salmon had always been a good color for her, and the satin rouleaux trim made her feel pretty and elegant.
"So it's presentable enough for dinner with your family?" she asked.
"They don't even deserve to see you in it." The low rumble of his voice made her breath catch in her throat. "I only wish that you and I could-"
"You do look lovely," said another voice. Lord Gabriel came up from behind Oliver, dressed all in black as usual. A look of pure mischief crossed his face. "Sorry I'm late, Miss Butterfield, but thank you, brother, for keeping her company until I arrived."
Oliver glared at him. "What the devil do you mean?"
"I'm taking the young lady down to dinner."
"That office should be left to her fiancé, don't you think?" Oliver bit out.
"Pretend fiancé. You have no real claim on her. And since you had her to yourself all day…" Lord Gabriel offered his arm. "Shall we, Miss Butterfield?"
Maria ~ Sabrina Jeffries
Claim On quotes by Sabrina Jeffries
Maybe stalking the woods is as vital to the human condition as playing music or putting words to paper. Maybe hunting has as much of a claim on our civilized selves as anything else. After all, the earliest forms of representational art reflect hunters and prey. While the arts were making us spiritually viable, hunting did the heavy lifting of not only keeping us alive, but inspiring us. To abhor hunting is to hate the place from which you came, which is akin to hating yourself in some distant, abstract way. ~ Steven Rinella
Claim On quotes by Steven Rinella
By focusing on such a narrow slice of Nepali life, Ms. Spray and Mr. Velez have ceded any totalizing claim on the truth and instead settled for a perfect incompleteness. ~ Manohla Dargis
Claim On quotes by Manohla Dargis
He would find a way to make it work, because he finally understood that sometimes you have to raise your expectations. And sometimes you need to make a claim on the world and the people you love to get what you most desire ~ Cinda Williams Chima
Claim On quotes by Cinda Williams Chima
Money is not wealth. Money is a claim on wealth. ~ David Korten
Claim On quotes by David Korten
The dead have a claim on us even heavier than that of the living, for they cannot hear our explanations, and we cannot ask their forgiveness. ~ Laurie R. King
Claim On quotes by Laurie R. King
It was not simply that beneficent harness of routine which enables silly men to live respectably and unhappy men to live calmly - it was a perpetual claim on the immediate fresh application of thought, and on the consideration of another's need and trial. Many of us looking back through life would say that the kindest man we have ever known has been a medical man, or perhaps that surgeon whose fine tact, directed by deeply informed perception, has come to us in our need with a more sublime beneficence than that of miracle-workers. Some of that twice-blessed mercy was always with Lydgate in his work at the Hospital or in private houses, serving better than any opiate to quiet and sustain him under his anxieties and his sense of mental degeneracy. Mr. ~ George Eliot
Claim On quotes by George Eliot
And she didn't take it well. I saw that for myself. I'm convinced that she's Lissa's half-sister, now, but she's in the same position Lissa was in - under Gavin's thumb."

"You think I haven't considered that?" Winkler's words were a growl. "We have no claim on this one, Weldon. The vamps have full control, although Bill says they have no idea she can walk in daylight."

"I heard her asking for fruit, so that's not the only similarity," Weldon huffed. "Lissa got used by the vampires and killed by her father's interference."

"Let's hope Griffin stays the hell away from this one, then. ~ Connie Suttle
Claim On quotes by Connie Suttle
It does no good to stake a claim on someone's heart. Unless they give it to you, it isn't yours to take. All you can do is share your heart and hope she wants it. All you can do is offer it and hope she takes it. All you can do is love her and hope to God she finds a way to love you back. ~ Katy Regnery
Claim On quotes by Katy Regnery
(As Michael Pollan says, "a health claim on a food product is a good indication that it's not really food") ~ Mark Bittman
Claim On quotes by Mark Bittman
He's not, he thinks, upset people know. He's always been pretty unapologetic when it came to things like who he dates and what he's into, although those were never anything like this. Still, the cocky shithead part of him is slightly pleased to finally have a claim on Henry. Yep, the prince? Most eligible bachelor in the world? British accent, face like a Greek god, legs for days? Mine. ~ Casey McQuiston
Claim On quotes by Casey McQuiston
If these laws [in the Bible] belonged to any other ancient culture we would approach them very differently. We need not bother to reject the code of Hammurabi. Presumably it is because Moses is still felt to make some claim on us that this project of discrediting his law is persisted in with such energy. The unscholarly character of the project may derive from the supposed familiarity of the subject. ~ Marilynne Robinson
Claim On quotes by Marilynne Robinson
So it goes for those of us who live in a cul-de-sac, where babies are brought home from the hospital and watched over, where hearts stop and feet slip, where we wonder if there is a hidden road that leads somewhere.
We believe and we doubt. Believing and doubting share the same inevitability, but they are not equal. They cannot lay the same claim on our allegiance. They do not share the same power.
If there are places beyond the cul-de-sac, doubt cannot take us there. ~ John Ortberg
Claim On quotes by John Ortberg
Even if we both survive, I won't enforce my claim on you," I said desperately. "In fact, the first thing I'll do is drop you back at that bordello in Poland and order you a new carnival orgy, promise!" Then I threw up, spraying a stream of crimson all over him as I lost my fight against the nausea.

"See?" I managed when I finished puking. Vow sealed with a blood oath."

He looked down at himself in disgust. "This is everything I knew marriage would be. ~ Jeaniene Frost
Claim On quotes by Jeaniene Frost
It is difficult to frighten those who are easily astonished; ignorance causes fearlessness. Children have so little claim on hell, that if they should see it they would admire it. ~ Victor Hugo
Claim On quotes by Victor Hugo
Perhaps this view has to do with the beginnings of modern America, which are to me, like the big bang theory, violent and wonderous. No one was safe from hatred and betrayal. Everyone was fighting to survive. It seemed the American Gypsies weren't immune to the neck-breaking race for what became the American Dream. Like so many others, they were more than willing to cut their roots in order to stake their claim on prosperity. Could that be the reason the American Gypsies largely escaped the more malevolent prejudices their European counterparts suffered? ~ Oksana Marafioti
Claim On quotes by Oksana Marafioti
The reason we need a ransom to be paid for us is that we have sold ourselves into sin and have been alienated from a holy God. When Jesus gave his life as a ransom, our slave masters, sin and death and the Devil, had to give up their claim on us. And the result was that we could be adopted into the family of God. ~ John Piper
Claim On quotes by John Piper
If one had sufficient evidence to warrant belief in a particular claim, then one wouldn't believe the claim on the basis of faith. "Faith" is the word one uses when one does not have enough evidence to justify holding a belief, but when one just goes ahead and believes anyway. ~ Peter Boghossian
Claim On quotes by Peter Boghossian
Writing was the antijob, the fuck you to all jobs, her claim on her autonomy, what kept her feral and free. ~ Michelle Tea
Claim On quotes by Michelle Tea
If the glare of the public eye has become unbearable, our inner child may claim its rights and our bodily shadow might turn into our mental second self, become our anchor, make us stay grounded and grant us deepness and intensity. By retreating from the blaze of display into our substantial self, we gain rootedness, insight and new worldly wisdom. ("Not without my shadow") ~ Erik Pevernagie
Claim On quotes by Erik Pevernagie
Non-citizen terrorist suspects are not members of the American national community, and they have no proper claim on the rights Americans accord one another. ~ Richard Perle
Claim On quotes by Richard Perle
Diversity ... is not casual liberal tolerance of anything not yourself. It is not polite accommodation. Instead, diversity is, in action, the sometimes painful awareness that other people, other races, other voices, other habits of mind have as much integrity of being, as much claim on the world as you do ... And I urge you, amid all the differences present to the eye and mind, to reach out to create the bond that ... will protect us all. We are all meant to be here together. ~ William Merritt Chase
Claim On quotes by William Merritt Chase
I am not in the habit of explaining myself. I have made a concession to you in doing so. Choose now how you will proceed."
I refuse your claim on me, she answered in the only way he allowed her to communicate. I will take my refusal to our people and plead with them for the mercy you evidently don't have in you. I will not be tied to you!
He bent over her, a dark, imposing figure exuding power. His silver eyes glittered at her. "Hear me, Savannah. If you believe nothing else about me, believe this. You belong to me, with me. No one will ever attempt to take you from me and live.No one." His voice was low, beautiful, and all the more deadly for it.
Her violet gaze was held captive by his pale one.She believed him. And not even her father, the Prince of their people, had a chance of destroying him. ~ Christine Feehan
Claim On quotes by Christine Feehan
I believed that one person owes a duty to another with no payment for it in return. I believed that it was my duty to love a woman who gave me nothing, who betrayed everything I lived for, who demanded her happiness at the price of mine. I believed that love is some static gift which, once granted, need no longer be deserved - just as they believe that wealth is a static possession which can be seized and held without further effort. I believed that love is a gratuity, not a reward to be earned just as they believe it is their right to demand an unearned wealth. And just as they believe that their need is a claim on my energy, so I believed that her unhappiness was a claim on my life. For the sake of pity, not justice, I ~ Ayn Rand
Claim On quotes by Ayn Rand
Fractal litigation, whereby the flapping of a butterfly's wings on one side of the world resulted in a massive compensation claim on the other. ~ Steve Aylett
Claim On quotes by Steve Aylett
Did you see the way he glared at me? It wasn't with daggers, Cait, it was fists. That fine piece of man-meat has staked a claim on you and he's going to pummel anyone who stands in his way, including my gay ass. My face can't handle that. After tonight, you're on your own. ~ Abby Niles
Claim On quotes by Abby Niles
As Augustine say clearly, God being God offends human pride. If God is running the universe and has first claim on our lives, guess who isn't running the universe and does not get to have things as they please. ~ Dallas Willard
Claim On quotes by Dallas Willard
Many men on their release carry their prison about with them into the air, and hide it as a secret disgrace in their hearts, and at length, like poor poisoned things, creep into some hole and die. It is wretched that they should have to do so, and it is wrong, terribly wrong, of society that it should force them to do so. Society takes upon itself the right to inflict appalling punishment on the individual, but it also as the supreme vice of shallowness, and fails to realise what it has done. When the man's punishment is over, it leaves him to himself; that is to say, it abandons him at the very moment when its highest duty towards him begins. It is really ashamed of its own actions, and shuns those whom it has punished, as people shun a creditor whose debt they cannot pay, or one on whom they have inflicted an irreparable, an irremediable wrong. I can claim on my side that if I realise what I have suffered, society should realise what it has inflicted on me; and that there should be no bitterness or hate on either side. ~ Oscar Wilde
Claim On quotes by Oscar Wilde
And from a quiet modesty that would have become a vestal, which seemed continually to impress upon him that he had no great claim on the world's room, Oak walked unassumingly and with a faintly perceptible bend, yet distinct from a bowing of the shoulders. ~ Thomas Hardy
Claim On quotes by Thomas Hardy
Real change will come when you focus on yourself - not on changing him, Real change comes when you are willing and able to state your claim on what you are and are not willing to live with. Just remember to let him in on it ~ Dory Hollander
Claim On quotes by Dory Hollander
Satyrs share a deep connection to all things in nature and are highly sensual. Obsessed with physical pleasure, they are usually mild-mannered, but will be extremely sexually aggressive if another male stakes a mating claim on a female the Satyr secretly covets, especially if she's a virgin, Darius recited. ~ Jennifer Ashley
Claim On quotes by Jennifer Ashley
Well, is Wonderland really real at all? Is Wonderland more real than where Alice has come from, or where you have come from? You're both visitors to the land, and who's to say which or where or who has the greatest claim on reality?" the cat said. ~ Anna James
Claim On quotes by Anna James
International organizations are to a large extent dependent upon these territorial entities and the willingness of their governments to support them. Only states can be members of the United Nations,14 only states are entitled to call upon the UN Security Council if there is a threat to international peace and security,15 only states may appear in contentious proceedings before the International Court of Justice,16 and only states can present a claim on behalf of a national who has been injured by another state,17 if there is no treaty to the contrary. ~ Anonymous
Claim On quotes by Anonymous
This man took my last son. No one could claim my hurt, or my anger. No one could have a greater claim on this one's life." Her voice was tight and fierce. She patted Ray's arm. "There's been enough killing down here. We have to find a way to live without the killing. ~ Robert Crais
Claim On quotes by Robert Crais
The great sin of the originalists is not to harbor a political agenda but to claim they do not, and to base that claim on a level of historical understanding they demonstrably do not possess. ~ Joseph J. Ellis
Claim On quotes by Joseph J. Ellis
Among all the emotions, the rich have the least talent for love. It is possible to love one's dog, dress or duck-shooting hat, but a human being presents a more difficult problem. The rich might wish to experience feelings of affection, but it is almost impossible to chip away the enamel of their narcissism. They take up all the space in all the mirrors in the house. Their children, who represent the most present and therefore the most annoying claim on their attention, usually receive the brunt of their irritation. ~ Lewis H. Lapham
Claim On quotes by Lewis H. Lapham
Everyone seeks their look. Since it is no longer possible to base any claim on one's own existence, there is nothing for it but to perform an appearing act without concerning oneself with being - or even with being seen. So it is not: I exist, I am here! but rather: I am visible, I am an image -look! look! This is not even narcissism, merely an extraversion without depth, a sort of self-promoting ingenuousness whereby everyone becomes the manager of their own appearance. ~ Jean Baudrillard
Claim On quotes by Jean Baudrillard
Never had Dallas seen the Targon more pissed. There'd been none of his usual charm, none of his nonchalance. He simply hadn't liked other men looking at Bride. And when the Mckell had staked claim on her ... shit. Bastard was probably already dead. ~ Gena Showalter
Claim On quotes by Gena Showalter
You own me, Jocelyn. You have had the claim on my heart since the first moment I saw you." After a long second he grinned, "You may have to share that claim with Olivia because she has it,
too." He kissed me soft and slow, then pressed his forehead to mine. "You are my best friend, but I want you to be more." He pulled away and looked deep into my eyes and my breath caught at
the sincerity I saw in his. "I need you to be more, because… I-I don't think I can handle another minute of not being able to touch you the way I want to touch you. And I know that I
can't handle you thinking that what I do is none of your business."

Claim On quotes by Jessica Wilde
The other wives and I talked together one night about the possibility of becoming widows. What would we do? God gave us peace of heart, and confidence that whatever might happen, His Word would hold. We knew that 'when He Putteth forth His sheep, He goeth before them.' God's leading was unmistakable up to this point. Each of us knew when we married our husbands that there would never be any question about who came first -- God and His work held held first place in each life. It was the condition of true discipleship; it became devastatingly meaningful now.

It was a time for soul-searching, a time for counting the possible cost. Was it the thrill of adventure that drew our husbands on? No. Their letters and journals make it abundantly clear that these men did not go out as some men go out to shoot a lion or climb a mountain. Their compulsion was from a different source. Each had made a personal transaction with God, recognising that he belonged to God, first of all by creation, and secondly by redemption through the death of His Son, Jesus Christ. This double claim on his life settled once and for all the question of allegiance. It was not a matter of striving to follow the example of a great Teacher. To conform to the perfect life of Jesus was impossible for a human being. To these men, Jesus Christ was God, and had actually taken upon Himself human form, in order that He might die, and, by His death, provide not only escape from the punishment which their sin meri ~ Elisabeth Elliot
Claim On quotes by Elisabeth Elliot
He had never asked anything from them; it was they who wished to hold him, they who pressed a claim on him- and the claim seemed to have the form of affection, but it was a form which he found harder to endure than any sort of hatred. He despised causeless affection, just as he despised unearned wealth. They professed to love him for some unknown reason and they ignored all the things for which he could wish to be loved. he wondered what response they could hope to obtain from him in such manner- if his response was what they wanted. And it was, he thought; else why those constant complaints, those unceasing accusations about his indifference? Why that chronic air of suspicion, as if they were waiting to be hurt? He had never had a desire to hurt them, but he had always felt their defensive, reproachful expectation; they seemed wounded by anything he said, it was not a matter of his words or actions, it was almost ... almost as if they wounded by the mere fact of his being. ~ Ayn Rand
Claim On quotes by Ayn Rand
Infidelity and skepticism abound everywhere. In one form or another they are to be found in every rank and class of society. Thousands are not ashamed to say that they regard the Bible as an old obsolete Jewish book, which has no special claim on our faith and obedience, and that it contains many inaccuracies and defects. In a day like this, the true Christian should be able to set his foot down firmly, and to render a reason of his confidence in God's Word. He should be able by sound arguments to show good cause why he thinks the Bible is from heaven, and not of men. ~ J.C. Ryle

The young ones have always a claim on the old to help them forward. ~ George Eliot

(On "Following") We've got a pretty serious claim on being the cheapest film ever made. ~ Christopher J. Nolan
Claim On quotes by Christopher J. Nolan
Followers of Jesus stake their claim on the firm belief that God will one day heal the planet of pain and death. Until that day arrives, the case against God must rely on incomplete evidence. We cannot really reconcile our pain-wracked world with a loving God because what we experience now is not the same as what God intends. Jesus himself prayed that God's will "be done, on earth as it is in heaven," a prayer that will not be fully answered until evil and suffering are finally defeated. ~ Philip Yancey
Claim On quotes by Philip Yancey
We might think of dollars as being 'certificates of performance.' The better I serve my fellow man, and the higher the value he places on that service, the more certificates of performance he gives me. The more certificates I earn, the greater my claim on the goods my fellow man produces. That's the morality of the market. In order for one to have a claim on what his fellow man produces, he must first serve him. ~ Walter E. Williams
Claim On quotes by Walter E. Williams
Any human face is a claim on you, because you can't help but understand the singularity of it, the courage and loneliness of it. But this is truest of the face of an infant. I consider that to be one kind of vision, as mystical as any. ~ Marilynne Robinson
Claim On quotes by Marilynne Robinson
I'm not marrying you for the pleasure of calling you my wife, esclave. I'm not marrying you because it's the evolution of a relationship. I'm marrying you so I have claim on you forever. Your soul will be mine for eternity. In sickness and in health, in life and in death, you will belong to me. And I will belong to you. ~ Pepper Winters
Claim On quotes by Pepper Winters
We are different personality types with different needs and motivations. In our culture, different is scary. Extroverts have laid claim on the definition of normal, leaving introverts to feel guilty for not fitting in. While ~ Michaela Chung

Wives and such are constantly filling up any refrigerator they have a claim on, even its ice-compartment, with irrelevant rubbish like food. ~ Kingsley Amis
Claim On quotes by Kingsley Amis
Both trust and gratitude require the courage to take risks because distrust and resentment, in their need to keep their claim on me, keep warning me how dangerous it is to let go of my careful calculations and guarded predictions. ~ Henri J.M. Nouwen

So it was flawed in that it didn't require California to have a first claim on the power plants. It deregulated part of the market, but not all of the market. ~ Gray Davis
Claim On quotes by Gray Davis
Was everyone else really as alive as she was? ... If the answer was yes, then the world, the social world, was unbearably complicated, with two billion voices, and everyone's thoughts striving in equal importance and everyone's claim on life as intense, and everyone thinking they were unique, when no one was. ~ Ian McEwan
Claim On quotes by Ian McEwan
Like fundamentalist Judaism and medieval Christianity, Islam is totalist. That is to say, it makes a total claim on the individual. ~ Martin Amis
Claim On quotes by Martin Amis
There was something stirring across the country because of what happened in Selma, Alabama, because some folks are willing to march across a bridge. So (my parents) got together (sic) and Barack Obama Jr. was born. So don't tell me I don't have a claim on Selma, Alabama. Don't tell me I'm not coming home to Selma, Alabama ~ Barack Obama
