Archbishop Fulton Sheen once said that if the United States continued to kill life at its beginnings with abortion, at its mid-day with the handicapped, and at twilight with euthanasia, it would lead to the catastrophic midnight of nuclear war. ~ Kelly Bowring
Archbishop Fulton Sheen quotes by Kelly Bowring
All love tends to become like that which it loves. God loved man; therefore He became man. For nine months her own body was the natural Eucharist, in which God shared communion with human life, thus preparing for that greater Eucharist when human life would commune with the Divine. Mary's joy was to form Christ in her own body; her joy now is to form Christ in our souls. In this Mystery, we pray to become pregnant with the Christ spirit, giving Him new lips with which He may speak of His Father, new hands with which He may feed the poor, and a new heart with which He may love everyone, even enemies. ~ Fulton J. Sheen
Archbishop Fulton Sheen quotes by Fulton J. Sheen
To a great extent the world is what we make it. We get back what we give. If we sow hate, we reap hate; if we scatter love and gentleness we harvest love and happiness. Other people are like a mirror which reflects back on us the kind of image we cast. The kind person bears with the infirmities of others, never magnifies trifles, and avoids a spirit of fault finding. ~ Archbishop Fulton Sheen
Archbishop Fulton Sheen quotes by Archbishop Fulton Sheen
Strong passions are the precious raw material of sanctity. Individuals that have carried their sinning to extremes should not despair or say, "I am too great a sinner to change," or "God would not want me." God will take anyone who is willing to love, not with an occasional gesture, but with a "passionless passion," a "wild tranquility." A sinner, unrepentant, cannot love God, any more that a man on dry land can swim; but as soon as he takes his errant energies to God and asks for their redirection, he will become happy, as he was never happy before. It is not the wrong things one has already done which keep one from God; it is the present persistence in that wrong. ~ Fulton J. Sheen
Archbishop Fulton Sheen quotes by Fulton J. Sheen
These are but a few specimens of philosophy which is no longer conscious of its own intrinsic worth, and which sees no higher mission in life for itself than applying the categories of the material to the spiritual, of the physical to the mental, and the spatio-temporal to the eternal. ~ Fulton J. Sheen
Archbishop Fulton Sheen quotes by Fulton J. Sheen
Wars come from egotism and selfishness. Every macrocosmic or world war has its origin in microcosmic wars going on inside millions and millions of individuals. ~ Fulton J. Sheen
Archbishop Fulton Sheen quotes by Fulton J. Sheen
Animals never have recourse to law courts, because they have no will to love; but man, having reason, feels the need of justifying his irrational behavior when he does wrong. ~ Fulton J. Sheen
Archbishop Fulton Sheen quotes by Fulton J. Sheen
When experimental psychology limits itself to rats and kittens, squabs and eyelids, philosophy of nature has little opportunity for formation. But when experimental psychology delivers over its findings concerning phenomenal manifestations of the mind, then the philosophy of nature may apply his philosophical principles. ~ Fulton J. Sheen
Archbishop Fulton Sheen quotes by Fulton J. Sheen
The mystery of creativeness is surrounded with awe. A special reverence does envelop the power to be co-creators with God in the making of human life. It is this hidden element that in a special way belongs to God, as does the grace of God in the sacraments. Those who speak of sex alone concentrate on the physical or visible element, forgetting the spiritual or invisible mystery of creativeness. Humans in the sacraments supply the act, the bread, the water, and the words; God supplies the grace, the mystery. In the sacred act of creating life, man and woman supply the unity of the flesh; God supplies the soul and the mystery. Such is the mystery of sex. ~ Fulton J. Sheen
Archbishop Fulton Sheen quotes by Fulton J. Sheen
Once a man ceases to be of service to his neighbor, he begins to be a burden to him. ~ Fulton J. Sheen
Archbishop Fulton Sheen quotes by Fulton J. Sheen
Love itself starts with the desire for something good. ~ Fulton J. Sheen
Archbishop Fulton Sheen quotes by Fulton J. Sheen
A woman never tells you why she loves; she just tells you how she loves. ~ Fulton J. Sheen
Archbishop Fulton Sheen quotes by Fulton J. Sheen
The sciences need philosophy; philosophy, in turn, needs the sciences. On both sides, certain naive minds, too confident in their own forces and satisfied with ideas entirely too superficial, believed in the universal value of a single method. On both side a severe critique must lead each method back to its just limits, and teach them to ask aid of the other methods and manners of approach which, by their convergence, will permit the mind to embrace the diverse aspects of reality ~ Fulton J. Sheen
Archbishop Fulton Sheen quotes by Fulton J. Sheen
Broadmindedness, when it means indifference to right and wrong, eventually ends in a hatred of what is right. ~ Fulton J. Sheen
Archbishop Fulton Sheen quotes by Fulton J. Sheen
He came to put a harlot above a Pharisee, a penitent robber above a High Priest, and a prodigal son above his exemplary brother. To all the phonies and fakers who would say that they could not join the Church because His Church was not holy enough, He would ask, 'How holy must the Church be before you will enter into it?' If the Church were as holy as they wanted it to be, they would never be allowed into it! In every other religion under the sun, in every Eastern religion from Buddhism to Confucianism, there must always be some purification before one can commune with God. But Our Blessed Lord brought a religion where the admission of sin is the condition of coming to Him. 'Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are ill. ~ Fulton J. Sheen
Archbishop Fulton Sheen quotes by Fulton J. Sheen
So long as there are poor, - I am poor, - So long as there are prisons, - I am a prisoner, - So long as there are sick, - I am weak, - So long as there is ignorance, - I must learn the truth, - So long as there is hate, - I must love, - So long as there is hunger, - I am famished. - Such is the identification Our Divine Lord would have us make with all whom He made in love and for love. ~ Fulton J. Sheen
Archbishop Fulton Sheen quotes by Fulton J. Sheen
Very few people believe in the devil these days, which suits the devil very well. He is always helping to circulate the news of his own death. The essence of God is existence, and He defines Himself as: 'I am Who am.' The essence of the devil is the lie, and he defines himself as: 'I am who am not.' Satan has very little trouble with those who do not believe in him; they are already on his side. ~ Fulton J. Sheen
Archbishop Fulton Sheen quotes by Fulton J. Sheen
The Gospels did not start the Church; the Church started the Gospels. The Church did not come out of the Gospels; the Gospels came out of the Church. ~ Fulton J. Sheen
Archbishop Fulton Sheen quotes by Fulton J. Sheen
To value only what can be "sold" is to defile what is truly precious. The innocent joy of childhood, the devotedness of a wife, the self sacrificing service of a daughter
none of these have an earthly market. To reduce everything to the dirty scales of economic values is to forget that some gifts, like Mary's, are so precious that the heart that offers them will be praised as long as time endures. ~ Fulton J. Sheen
Archbishop Fulton Sheen quotes by Fulton J. Sheen
There are 200 million poor in the world who would gladly take the vow of poverty if they could eat, dress and have a home like I do ~ Fulton J. Sheen
Archbishop Fulton Sheen quotes by Fulton J. Sheen
Other people are like a mirror which reflects back on us the kind of image we cast. ~ Fulton J. Sheen
Archbishop Fulton Sheen quotes by Fulton J. Sheen
Judge the Catholic Church not by those who barely live by its spirit, but by the example of those who live closest to it. ~ Fulton J. Sheen
Archbishop Fulton Sheen quotes by Fulton J. Sheen
relinquish the desire for children and wealth and live the life of 'Vanaprastha,' that is, one retired from the household cares. ~ Fulton J. Sheen
Archbishop Fulton Sheen quotes by Fulton J. Sheen
Man is incurably curious. ~ Fulton J. Sheen
Archbishop Fulton Sheen quotes by Fulton J. Sheen
There are not one hundred people in the United States who hate The Catholic Church, but there are millions who hate what they wrongly perceive the Catholic Church to be. ~ Fulton J. Sheen
Archbishop Fulton Sheen quotes by Fulton J. Sheen
Freedom is not just something with which we are born; it is something we achieve. America did not receive a perpetual endowment of freedom; it has had to struggle and fight to preserve it. Freedom is not an heirloom or an antique; it is a life that must fight against the corrosive powers of death and nourish itself on the daily bread of goodness and virtue. ~ Fulton J. Sheen
Archbishop Fulton Sheen quotes by Fulton J. Sheen
Prayer begins by talking to God, but it ends by listening to Him. In the face of Absolute Truth, silence is the soul's language. ~ Fulton J. Sheen
Archbishop Fulton Sheen quotes by Fulton J. Sheen
Every child should have an occasional pat on the back as long as it is applied low enough and hard enough. ~ Fulton J. Sheen
Archbishop Fulton Sheen quotes by Fulton J. Sheen
A democracy flirts with the danger of becoming a slave in direct ratio to the numbers of its citizens who work, but do not own / or who own, but do not work; or who distribute, as politicians do, but do not produce. The danger of the "slave state" disappears in ratio to the numbers of people who own property and admit its attendant responsibilities under God. They can call their souls their own because they own and administer something other than their souls. Thus they are free. ~ Fulton J. Sheen
Archbishop Fulton Sheen quotes by Fulton J. Sheen
The world is living today in what might be described as an era of carnality, which glorifies sex, hates restraint, identifies purity with coldness, innocence with ignorance, and turns men and women into Buddhas with their eyes closed, hands folded across their breasts, intently looking inward, thinking only of self. ~ Fulton J. Sheen
Archbishop Fulton Sheen quotes by Fulton J. Sheen
Scepticism is never certain of itself, being less a firm intellectual position than a pose to justify bad behavior. ~ Fulton J. Sheen
Archbishop Fulton Sheen quotes by Fulton J. Sheen
FREUDIANISM interprets man in terms of sex; Christianity interprets sex in terms of man. ~ Fulton J. Sheen
Archbishop Fulton Sheen quotes by Fulton J. Sheen
All love on this earth involves choice. When, for example, a young man expresses his love to a young woman and asks her to become his wife, he is not just making an affirmation of love; he is also negating his love for anyone else. In that one act by which he chooses her, he rejects all that is not her. There is no other real way in which to prove we love a thing than by choosing it in preference to something else. Word and signs of love may be, and often are, expressions of egotism or passion; but deeds are proofs of love. We can prove we love our Lord only by choosing Him in preference to anything else. ~ Fulton J. Sheen
Archbishop Fulton Sheen quotes by Fulton J. Sheen
No man discovers anything big if he does not make himself small. ~ Fulton J. Sheen
Archbishop Fulton Sheen quotes by Fulton J. Sheen
Celibacy is like poetry keeping the idea ever in mind like a dream; but marriage uses chisel and brush, concentrating more on marble and canvas. Celibacy jumps to a conclusion like an intuition; marriage, like reason, labors through ebb and flow, step by step. ~ Fulton J. Sheen
Archbishop Fulton Sheen quotes by Fulton J. Sheen
In almost nine cases out of ten, those who have once had the Faith but now reject it, or claim that it does not make sense, are driven not by reasoning but by the way they are living ~ Fulton J. Sheen
Archbishop Fulton Sheen quotes by Fulton J. Sheen
The fact the enemies of God must face is that modern civilization has conquered the world, but in doing so has lost its soul. And in losing its soul it will lose the very world it gained. Even our own so-called Liberal culture in these United States which has tried to avoid complete secularization by leaving little zones of individual freedom is in danger of forgetting that these zones were preserved only because religion was in their soul. And as religion fades so will freedom, for only where the spirit of God is, is there liberty. ~ Fulton J. Sheen
Archbishop Fulton Sheen quotes by Fulton J. Sheen
Never forget that there are only two philosophies to rule your life: the one of the cross, which starts with the fast and ends with the feast. The other of Satan, which starts with the feast and ends with the headache. ~ Fulton J. Sheen
Archbishop Fulton Sheen quotes by Fulton J. Sheen
Counsel involving right and wrong should never be sought from a man who does not say his prayers. ~ Fulton J. Sheen
Archbishop Fulton Sheen quotes by Fulton J. Sheen
Our personal dispositions are as windowpanes through which we see the world either as rosy or dull. The way we color the glasses we wear is the way the world seems to us. ~ Fulton J. Sheen
Archbishop Fulton Sheen quotes by Fulton J. Sheen
Love was meant to be also a sign, a symbol, a messenger, a telltale of the Divine. Love is a messenger from God saying that every human affection and every ecstasy of love are sparks from the great flame of love that is God. ~ Fulton J. Sheen
Archbishop Fulton Sheen quotes by Fulton J. Sheen
The greatest influence in writing was G. K. Chesterton who never used a useless word, who saw the value of a paradox, and avoided what was trite. ~ Fulton J. Sheen
Archbishop Fulton Sheen quotes by Fulton J. Sheen
A Catholic may sin and sin as badly as anyone else, but no genuine Catholic ever denies he is a sinner. A Catholic wants his sins forgiven - not excused or sublimated. ~ Fulton J. Sheen
Archbishop Fulton Sheen quotes by Fulton J. Sheen
As the mother knows the needs better than the babe, so the Blessed Mother understands our cries and worries and knows them better than we know ourselves. ~ Fulton J. Sheen
Archbishop Fulton Sheen quotes by Fulton J. Sheen
Discussion is also a most excellent means to avoid -decision- ~ Fulton J. Sheen
Archbishop Fulton Sheen quotes by Fulton J. Sheen
The danger today is in believing there are no sick people, there is only a sick society. ~ Fulton J. Sheen
Archbishop Fulton Sheen quotes by Fulton J. Sheen
Charity is to be measured, not by what one has given away, but by what one has left. ~ Fulton J. Sheen
Archbishop Fulton Sheen quotes by Fulton J. Sheen
The good repent on knowing their sin; the evil become angry when discovered. Ignorance is not the cause of evil, as Plato held; neither is education the answer to the removal of evil. These men had an intellect as well as a will; knowledge as well as intention. Truth can be known and hated; Goodness can be known and crucified. The Hour was approaching, and for the moment the fear of the people deterred the Pharisees. Violence could not be triggered against Him until He would say, 'This is your Hour. ~ Fulton J. Sheen
Archbishop Fulton Sheen quotes by Fulton J. Sheen
When a soul in sin, under the impetus of grace, turns to God, there is penance; but when a soul in sin refuses to change, God sends chastisement. This chastisement need not be external, and certainly it is never arbitrary; it comes as an inevitable result of breaking God's moral law. But the entrenched forces of the modern world are irrational, men nowadays do not always interpret disasters as the moral events they are. When calamity strikes the flint of human hearts, sparks of sacred fire are kindled and men will normally begin to make an estimate of their true worth. In previous ages this was usual: a disordered individual could find his way back to peace because he lived in an objective world inspired by Christian order. But the frustrated man of today, having lost his faith in God, living as he does, in a disordered chaotic world, has no beacon to guide him. In times of trouble he sometimes turns in upon himself, like a serpent devouring its own tail. Given such a man, who worships the false trinity of (1) his own pride, which acknowledges no law; (2) his own sensuality, which makes earthly comfort it goal; (3) his license, which interprets liberty as the absences of all restraint and law - then a cancer is created which is impossible to cure except through an operation or calamity unmistakable as God's action in history. It is always through sweat and blood and tears that the soul is purged of its animal egotism and laid open to the Spirit … Catastrophe can be to a world ~ Fulton J. Sheen
Archbishop Fulton Sheen quotes by Fulton J. Sheen
F it be a terrible thing to fall into the hands of the living God,It is a more terrible thing to fall out of them. ~ Fulton J. Sheen
Archbishop Fulton Sheen quotes by Fulton J. Sheen
Love of God thus becomes the dominant passion of life; like every other worth-while love, it demands and inspires sacrifice. But love of God and man, as an ideal, has lately been replaced by the new ideal of tolerance which inspires no sacrifice. Why should any human being in the world be merely tolerated? What man has ever made a sacrifice in the name of tolerance? It leads men, instead, to express their own egotism in a book or a lecture that patronizes the downtrodden group. One of the cruelest things that can happen to a human being is to be tolerated. Never once did Our Lord say, "Tolerate your enemies!" But He did say, "Love your enemies; do good to them that hate you" (Matt. 5:44). Such love can be achieved only if we deliberately curb our fallen nature's animosities. ~ Fulton J. Sheen
Archbishop Fulton Sheen quotes by Fulton J. Sheen
The slave states of Western world are an outgrowth of monopolistic capitalism - an economic system which is opposed to the wide distribution of private property in many hands. Instead, monopolistic capitalism concentrates productive wealth among a few men, allowing the rest to become a vast proletariat. ~ Fulton J. Sheen
