In a great affliction there is no light either in the stars or in the sun; for when the inward light is fed with fragrant oil; there can be no darkness though the sun should go out. But when, like a sacred lamp in the temple, the inward light is quenched, there is no light outwardly, though a thousand suns should preside in the heavens. ~ Henry Ward Beecher
Amity Affliction Pittsburgh quotes by Henry Ward Beecher
Until I sailed, I never would have known that children could be so brave. Which is not to say they did not whine at sea, that they did not cry at the worst times, or need their crusts cut just so, but as it turned out, they had a deep capacity for witness. In a way that I could not, they became the sea, they became the swamp. Their experience was total, without footnote. That day in the swamp, I felt unaccountably happy for them, and for myself as a child, because I knew that I must have been that way once too. I remembered the loss of childhood too well. But I often forgot the long years it was mine. ~ Amity Gaige
Amity Affliction Pittsburgh quotes by Amity Gaige
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner. Visit me in my affliction; give me a sense of oneness in you, a home in you. Do not let me escape. ~ Seth Haines
Amity Affliction Pittsburgh quotes by Seth Haines
Time, consoler of affliction and softener of anger ~ Charles Dickens
Amity Affliction Pittsburgh quotes by Charles Dickens
Pittsburgh was a great team. Coach Noll, Joe Greene, Jack Lambert, L.C. Greenwood and all those guys did a great job. That's the team that kept us from winning two Super Bowls. It was a great rivalry. ~ Earl Campbell
Amity Affliction Pittsburgh quotes by Earl Campbell
The following obituary appeared in the Pittsburgh Sun-Telegraph of Sept. 16, 1958:

A GREAT POET died last week in Lancieux, France, at the age of 84.

He was not a poet's poet. Fancy-Dan dilletantes will dispute the description "great."

He was a people's poet. To the people he was great. They understood him, and knew that any verse carrying the by-line of Robert W. Service would be a lilting thing, clear, clean and power-packed, beating out a story with a dramatic intensity that made the nerves tingle.

And he was no poor, garret-type poet, either. His stuff made money hand over fist. One piece alone, The Shooting of Dan McGrew, rolled up half a million dollars for him. He lived it up well and also gave a great deal to help others.

"The only society I like," he once said, "is that which is rough and tough - and the tougher the better. That's where you get down to bedrock and meet human people."

He found that kind of society in the Yukon gold rush, and he immortalized it. ~ Robert W. Service
Amity Affliction Pittsburgh quotes by Robert W. Service
Any claim to actual identification as a drama must rest upon the construction of a plot independent of the assignment of affliction to the protagonist. ~ David Mamet
Amity Affliction Pittsburgh quotes by David Mamet
I read because I like it. It passes the time and it sucks you in so you don't have to think about anything else. ~ Amity Hope
Amity Affliction Pittsburgh quotes by Amity Hope
I come from a working-class family in Pittsburgh, whereas 'Mike & Molly' deals with the working class in Chicago. I swear a little, but I pretty much talk the same. It's not like when you see someone like Tim Allen and he's a lot bluer onstage. ~ Billy Gardell
Amity Affliction Pittsburgh quotes by Billy Gardell
I have never seen an Amity religious ceremony before. I am only familiar with the religion of my parents' faction, which part of me still holds to and the other rejects as foolishness - the prayers before dinner, the weekly meetings, the acts of service, the poems about a selfless God. This is something different, something mysterious. ~ Veronica Roth
Amity Affliction Pittsburgh quotes by Veronica Roth
There would be times when I got so much work that I didn't have time to write. School interfered with writing more than writing with school. ~ Amity Gaige
Amity Affliction Pittsburgh quotes by Amity Gaige
Everything you go through as a Christian is a training exercise behind which God has a divine purpose. He did not save you so that you could cruise into paradise on a luxury liner; He saved
you to prepare you to be of use in His kingdom. The moment you were born again, He enrolled you in His school of suffering. And every affliction, every trial, is another lesson in the curriculum. ~ David Wilkerson
Amity Affliction Pittsburgh quotes by David Wilkerson
It is impossible to draw near to God without sorrows, without which human righteousness cannot remain unchanged ... If you desire virtue, than give yourself to every affliction, for afflictions produce humility. If someone abides in virtue without afflictions, the door of pride is opened to him. ~ Isaac Of Nineveh
Amity Affliction Pittsburgh quotes by Isaac Of Nineveh
I'm always for lower taxes because lower taxes make people want to do things. Less burden, more fun, and economics is about people wanting to have fun. Growth is fun for people in the marketplace. ~ Amity Shlaes
Amity Affliction Pittsburgh quotes by Amity Shlaes
hurt, Hannah prayed to the Lord and wept with many tears. 11 Making a vow, she pleaded, "Lord of Hosts, if You will take notice of Your servant's affliction, remember and not forget me, and give Your servant a son, I will give him to the Lord all the days of his life, and his hair will never be cut. ~ Anonymous
Amity Affliction Pittsburgh quotes by Anonymous
Humility is a strange flower; it grows best in winter weather, and under storms of affliction. ~ Samuel Rutherford
Amity Affliction Pittsburgh quotes by Samuel Rutherford
It is only necessary to know that love is a direction and not a state of the soul. If one is unaware of this, one falls to despair at the first onslaught of affliction. ~ Simone Weil
Amity Affliction Pittsburgh quotes by Simone Weil
Patience cannot remove, but it can always dignify and alleviate, misfortune. ~ Laurence Sterne
Amity Affliction Pittsburgh quotes by Laurence Sterne
The Wonderlust
probably it's a worse affliction than the Wanderlust. ~ Sinclair Lewis
Amity Affliction Pittsburgh quotes by Sinclair Lewis
Affiiction makes God appear to be absent for a time, more absent than a dead man, more absent than light in the utter darkness of a cell. A kind of horror submerges the whole soul. During this absence there is nothing to love. What is terrible is that if, in this darkness where there is nothing to love, the soul ceases to love, God's absence becomes final. ~ Simone Weil
Amity Affliction Pittsburgh quotes by Simone Weil
Look back, believer: think of your doubting God when he has been so faithful to you
think of your foolish outcry of "Not so, my Father," when he crossed his hands in affliction to give you the larger blessing; think of the many times when you have read his providences in the dark, misinterpreted his dispensations, and groaned out, "All these things are against me," when they are all working together for your good! Think how often you have chosen sin because of its pleasure, when indeed, that pleasure was a root of bitterness to you! ~ Charles Haddon Spurgeon
Amity Affliction Pittsburgh quotes by Charles Haddon Spurgeon
Whatever pretended causes we may blame our afflictions upon, it is often nothing but self-interest and vanity that produce them. ~ Francois De La Rochefoucauld
Amity Affliction Pittsburgh quotes by Francois De La Rochefoucauld
Your melancholy. Or depression. Along with nine-tenths of the afflictions I've studied, diagnosed, attempted to treat. Call them whatever you like, but they're just different names for loneliness. That's what lets the darkness in. That's what you have to fight. ~ Andrew Pyper
Amity Affliction Pittsburgh quotes by Andrew Pyper
Whenever I find myself in the cellar of affliction, I always look about for the wine. ~ Samuel Rutherford
Amity Affliction Pittsburgh quotes by Samuel Rutherford
I think a writer is a describer. She describes society and human nature as she sees it. She has to be both typical of that society and alone within it. ~ Amity Gaige
Amity Affliction Pittsburgh quotes by Amity Gaige
Affliction is the wholesome soil of virtue, where patience, honor, sweet humility, and calm fortitude, take root and strongly flourish. ~ David Mallet
Amity Affliction Pittsburgh quotes by David Mallet
I think marriage and family keeps being written about because that's where we keep our reputations with ourselves - I mean, we can't quite slip the truths we reveal about ourselves at home. ~ Amity Gaige
Amity Affliction Pittsburgh quotes by Amity Gaige
Doing nothing about climate change is still a fairly common affliction, even in this day and age. What to do with those people, who are together threatening everybody's existence on this planet? Clearly we don't really think they should be blown up, that's just a joke for the mini-movie, but maybe a little amputating would be a good place to start?" [] "We 'killed' five people to make No Pressure - a mere blip compared to the 300,000 real people who now die each year from climate change ~ Franny Armstrong
Amity Affliction Pittsburgh quotes by Franny Armstrong
The intriguing history of American applied toponymy includes a few notoriously unpopular sweeping decisions a year after President Benjamin Harrison created the Board on Geographic Names in 1890. Harrison acted at the behest of several government agencies, including the U.S. Geological Survey and the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey, which was responsible for mapping the nation's coastline, harbors, and coastal waterways. Troubled by inconsistencies in spelling, board members voted to replace centre with center, drop the ugh from names ending in orough, and shorten the suffix burgh to burg. Overnight, Centreview (in Mississippi) became Centerview, Isleborough (in Maine) became Isleboro, and Pittsburgh (in Pennsylvania) lost its final h and a lot of civic pride. The city was chartered in 1816 as Pittsburg, but the Post Office Department added the extra letter sometime later. Although both spellings were used locally and the shorter version had been the official name, many Pittsburghers complained bitterly about the cost of reprinting stationery and repainting signs. Making the spelling consistent with Harrisburg, they argued, was hardly a good reason for truncating the Iron City's moniker--although Harrisburg was the state capital, it was a smaller and economically less important place. Local officials protested that the board had exceeded its authority. The twenty-year crusade to restore the final h bore fruit in 1911, when the board reversed itself--but only for Pittsburgh. In ~ Mark Monmonier
Amity Affliction Pittsburgh quotes by Mark Monmonier
When you do something moral and upright and wander off by yourself, well, everyone doesn't always follow you, do they, right? You pat yourself on your sanctimonious back but it doesn't mean the crowd rewards you for doing what you think is right. ~ Amity Shlaes
Amity Affliction Pittsburgh quotes by Amity Shlaes
I'll never forget the magic of our Saturday nights. Special moments carved in my mind by you the sculptor of my love. Let's dance the night away. Who needs music, when your heart already sings to me. ~ ~ Fidelis O Mkparu (2016), Author Of ‘Love’s Affliction’
Amity Affliction Pittsburgh quotes by ~ Fidelis O Mkparu (2016), Author Of ‘Love’s Affliction’
You can read all the books in the world on the Nazi concentration camps and the gas chambers, and yet reality will draw upon you only when you are put through that yourself. It is a law of God, or nature, if you prefer, that pain, suffering and grief cannot be transferred or known by proxy. Neither empathy nor sympathy but experience alone is a valid currency of affliction. It alone makes you a card-holding member all allows you to join the club of the wretched of the earth. All else is counterfeit. ~ Kiran Nagarkar
Amity Affliction Pittsburgh quotes by Kiran Nagarkar
The extreme affliction which overtakes human beings does not create human misery, it merely reveals it. ~ Simone Weil
Amity Affliction Pittsburgh quotes by Simone Weil
Corn is cleaned with wind, and the Soul with chastening ~ George Herbert
Amity Affliction Pittsburgh quotes by George Herbert
By affliction Christ shows us our emptiness and weakness, draws us to the throne of grace, purifies our affections, weans us from the world, and makes us long for heaven. ~ J.C. Ryle
Amity Affliction Pittsburgh quotes by J.C. Ryle
The true believer is rewarded in every thing, even in affliction. ~ Abu Bakr
