As far as the environment is concerned, I am becoming pessimistic because I do not see anybody stepping up and taking the long view approach. It seems like we're stuck in a tragedy of the commons where everyone is trying to contribute as little as possible to get out of this situation. ~ Frans De Waal
Tragedy Of The Commons quotes by Frans De Waal
An anarcho-capitalist is someone who agrees that the best way to eliminate the tragedy of the commons is to privatize it away, and realizes that state politics is the mother of all such tragedies. ~ Jakub Bozydar Wisniewski
Tragedy Of The Commons quotes by Jakub Bozydar Wisniewski
Those who nod sagely and quote the tragedy of the commons in relation to environmental problems from pollution of the atmosphere to poaching of national parks tend to forget that Garrett Hardin revised his conclusions many times over thirty years. He recognized, most importantly, that anarchy did not prevail on the common pastures of midieval England in the way he had described [in his 1968 essay in 'Science']. The commoners--usually a limited number of people with defined rights in law--organized themselves to ensure it did not. The pastures were protected from ruin by the tradition of 'stinting,' which limited each herdsman to a fixed number of animals. 'A managed commons, though it may have other defects, is not automatically subject to the tragic fate of the unmanaged commons,' wrote Hardin, though he was still clearly unhappy with commoning arrangements. As with all forms of socialism, of which he regarded commoning as an early kind, Hardin said the flaw in the system lay in the quality of the management. The problem was alays how to prevent the managers from furthering their own interests. Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? Who guards the guardians?

Hardin observed, crucially, that a successful managed common depended on limiting the numbers of commoners, limiting access, and having penalties that deterred.

None of Hardin's requirements for a successfully managed common is fulfilled by high-seas fishery regimes ~ Charles Clover
Tragedy Of The Commons quotes by Charles Clover
One-man-one-vote combined with "free entry" into government-democracy
implies that every person and his personal property comes within reach of-and is up for grabs by-everyone else: a "tragedy of the commons" is created. ~ Hans-Hermann Hoppe
Tragedy Of The Commons quotes by Hans-Hermann Hoppe
A foolish environmentalist wants to save nature from the greed of the market by exposing it to the tragedy of the commons. A smart environmentalist wants to save nature from the tragedy of the commons by exposing it to the greed of the market. ~ Jakub Bozydar Wisniewski
Tragedy Of The Commons quotes by Jakub Bozydar Wisniewski
Tragedy of the Commons: while each person can agree that all would benefit from common restraint, the incentives of the individuals are arrayed against that outcome. ~ Clay Shirky
Tragedy Of The Commons quotes by Clay Shirky
In the ashes of bitter tragedy, lie the seeds of astonishing rebirth. ~ Stewart Stafford
Tragedy Of The Commons quotes by Stewart Stafford
I know now one must plan one's old age as surely as one plans any other stage of life. The tragedy of Cousin Josie's life is that she never knew what she wanted at any age - only what she did not want. She never wanted to marry nor to pursue a career, and in life, unlike grammar, double negatives do not produce an affirmative. ~ Elizabeth Forsythe Hailey
Tragedy Of The Commons quotes by Elizabeth Forsythe Hailey
Of Love and Other Demons (Vintage International) - Gabriel GarcÍA MÁRquez (Highlight: 5; Note: 0)

-------------

"Crazy people are not crazy if one accepts their reasoning."
(Chapter:Chapter Two)

"What is essential, therefore, is not that you no longer believe, but that God continues to believe in you. And regarding that there can be no doubt, for it is He in His infinite diligence who has enlightened us so that we may offer you this consolation.""
(Chapter:Chapter Two)

"Disbelief is more resistant than faith because it is sustained by the senses"
(Chapter:Chapter Two)

"Take care," said Delaura. "Sometimes we attribute certain things we do not understand to the demon, not thinking they may be things of God that we do not understand.""
(Chapter:Chapter Three)

". He confessed that every moment was filled with thoughts of her, that everything he ate and drank tasted of her, that she was his life, always and everywhere, as only God had the right and power to be, and that the supreme joy of his heart would be to die with her. "
(Chapter:Chapter Five) ~ Gabriel Garcia Marquez
Tragedy Of The Commons quotes by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
I wondered what things what things became when you no longer needed them, and I wondered what the future would hold once we'd gotten past our personal tragedies and proven them ultimately survivable. ~ Robyn Schneider
Tragedy Of The Commons quotes by Robyn Schneider
It's all rehearsed, in a weird way. People spend so much time dramatizing trivial bullshit that when an actual tragedy happens, I wonder how anyone could possibly act out their grief in a natural way. The tragedies we steel ourselves for never come for years and years, and our negative fantasies wear us down inch by inch, so that when the blow actually comes, there's little of us left to care. ~ Halle Butler
Tragedy Of The Commons quotes by Halle Butler
The tragedy of our lives is that, while we suffer from the wounds afflicted on us by those who love us, we cannot avoid wounding those we want to love. ~ Henri Nouwen
Tragedy Of The Commons quotes by Henri Nouwen
I am in love with this burrito. I would marry it if I didn't want to eat it so badly."
"The tragedy of true love," Cade whispered. ~ Cora Carmack
Tragedy Of The Commons quotes by Cora Carmack
All romances end in tragedy. One of the key people in a romance becomes a monster sooner or later. ~ David Cronenberg
Tragedy Of The Commons quotes by David Cronenberg
Anybody who enjoys being in the House of Commons probably needs psychiatric help. ~ Ken Livingstone
Tragedy Of The Commons quotes by Ken Livingstone
Every triumph has to overcome the fear of tragedy. ~ Debasish Mridha
Tragedy Of The Commons quotes by Debasish Mridha
If it can be verified, we don't need faith ... Faith is for that which lies on the other side of reason. Faith is what makes life bearable, with all its tragedies and ambiguities and sudden, startling joys. ~ Madeleine L'Engle
Tragedy Of The Commons quotes by Madeleine L'Engle
The plot, then, is the first principle, and, as it were, the soul of a tragedy; Character holds the second place. ~ Aristotle.
Tragedy Of The Commons quotes by Aristotle.
The deep vexation of is inward soul
Hath served a dumb arrest upon his tongue;
Who, mad that sorrow should his use control,
Or keep him from heart-easing words so long,
Begins to talk; but through his lips do throng
Weak words, so thick come in his poor heart's aid,
That no man could distinguish what he said. ~ William Shakespeare
Tragedy Of The Commons quotes by William Shakespeare
It is what we see when we imagine what the afterlife must be like: our happiest triumphs, our most sincere moments, stolen from the seam of our lives, a respite just before the onset of imminent tragedy. ~ Joe Meno
Tragedy Of The Commons quotes by Joe Meno
But if we are to say anything important, if fiction is to stay relevant and vibrant, then we have to ask the right questions. All art fails if it is asked to be representative - the purpose of fiction is not to replace life anymore than it is meant to support some political movement or ideology. All fiction reinscribes the problematic past in terms of the present, and, if it is significant at all, reckons with it instead of simply making it palatable or pretty. What aesthetic is adequate to the Holocaust, or to the recent tragedy in Haiti? Narrative is not exculpatory - it is in fact about culpability, about recognizing human suffering and responsibility, and so examining what is true in us and about us. If we're to say anything important, we require an art less facile, and editors willing to seek it. ~ Michael Copperman
Tragedy Of The Commons quotes by Michael Copperman
Divorce isn't such a tragedy. A tragedy's staying in an unhappy marriage, teaching your children the wrong things about love. Nobody ever died of divorce. ~ Jennifer Weiner
Tragedy Of The Commons quotes by Jennifer Weiner
Today's righteous cause is religion. The gods are paying attention, after all. Wanting you to die in their name. Why? To prove your loyalty, of course. And what of their loyalty, you might wonder? Has your god blessed you and your life? Answered your every prayer? Given proof of its omnipotence? Where is this god's loyalty to you? Not loyal enough to spare your life which you give in its name. Not loyal enough to steer you past tragedy and grief, loss and misery. Not loyal enough to save your loved ones. Or the children who had to die as proof of that selfsame loyalty. No, today the sack is filled with religion. Tomorrow it will be something else. The joy lies in beating it. 'Poor ~ Steven Erikson
Tragedy Of The Commons quotes by Steven Erikson
The House of Commons, refused to receive the addresses of the colonies, when the matter was pending; besides, we hold our rights neither from them nor from the Lords. ~ Christopher Gadsden
Tragedy Of The Commons quotes by Christopher Gadsden
There was a stricken conscience of public guilt and we all felt that we had been wrong, that something was wrong with that building which we had accepted or the tragedy never would have happened. Moved by this sense of stricken guilt, we banded ourselves together to find a way by law to prevent this kind of disaster. ~ Frances Perkins
Tragedy Of The Commons quotes by Frances Perkins
When love ceases to be tragic it is something else and the individual again throws himself in search of tragedy. ~ Albert Camus
Tragedy Of The Commons quotes by Albert Camus
If, for instance, you put in a Malay officer who's very religious and who has family ties in Malaysia in charge of a machine gun unit, that's a very tricky business. We've got to know his background ... I'm saying these things because they are real, and if I don't think that, and I think even if today the Prime Minister doesn't think carefully about this, I and my family could have a tragedy. ~ Lee Kuan Yew
Tragedy Of The Commons quotes by Lee Kuan Yew
Not having ice cream," she proclaimed, "is the culmination of all disasters! ~ Brandon Sanderson
Tragedy Of The Commons quotes by Brandon Sanderson
And I found there were myriad definitions of this thing called tragedy that had wormed its way through the history of literature; and the simplest of all was this: that it is the story of a figure who, through some moral flaw or personal failing, falls through force of circumstance to his doom. ~ Helen Macdonald
Tragedy Of The Commons quotes by Helen Macdonald
For the time being, it need only be said that the philosopher in question made much of human existence as a tragedy that need not have been were it not for the intervention in our lives of a single, calamitous event: the evolution of consciousness - parent of all horrors. ~ Thomas Ligotti
Tragedy Of The Commons quotes by Thomas Ligotti
The House Of Commons has never been a tea-party. It consists of strong-minded, often very idealistic people, who are trying to accomplish something for our country. We are inheritors of an adversarial system and that, in itself, fosters conflict. ~ John Allen Fraser
Tragedy Of The Commons quotes by John Allen Fraser
Nothing lasts forever. That's the tragedy and the miracle of existence - that everything is impermanent. Everything changes. All we can do is make the best of the time we have. And go down shooting, naturally. ~ Seanan McGuire
Tragedy Of The Commons quotes by Seanan McGuire
The comedy of man survives the tragedy of man. ~ G.K. Chesterton
Tragedy Of The Commons quotes by G.K. Chesterton
Tragedy whores don't feel the foundation break apart beneath their feet - the reeling blast of emptiness, though to watch them you might think so. They're voyeurs. They feed like coffin flies on drama, embroiled in virtual grief and the illusion of heartbreak. They all have stories they want to tell, insist on telling, proclaiming their link to tragedy. Emotional rubberneckers. ~ Carole Radziwill
Tragedy Of The Commons quotes by Carole Radziwill
This is the tragedy of almost every civilization - that its soul is in its faith, and seldom survives philosophy. ~ Will Durant
Tragedy Of The Commons quotes by Will Durant
Our family was built atop the ruins of tragedy, Rivkah, each brick fashioned from mercy. You will find no stones in their palms. ~ Connilyn Cossette
Tragedy Of The Commons quotes by Connilyn Cossette
We have reached a new milestone as a human family. With seven billion of us now inhabiting our planet, it is time to ask some fundamental questions. How can we provide a dignified life for ourselves and future generations while preserving and protecting the global commons - the atmosphere, the oceans and the ecosystems that support us? ~ Ban Ki-moon
Tragedy Of The Commons quotes by Ban Ki-moon
The art of mastering life is the prerequisite for all further forms of expression, whether they are paintings, sculptures, tragedies, or musical compositions. ~ Paul Klee
Tragedy Of The Commons quotes by Paul Klee
I am called, and I personify, the Improbability of Love. I was painted to celebrate the wild cascades of amour, the rollicking, bucking, breaking and transformative passion that inevitably gives way to miserable, constricting, overbearing disappointment. At first my master imbued every tiny brushstroke with unbound ardour, untrammelled desire and unquenchable lust. During the painting of the work he had to accept that his feelings were a mirage, a chimera in his mind. This is the great tragedy of love - even if you are lucky enough to stumble on it, it never lasts. ~ Hannah Rothschild
Tragedy Of The Commons quotes by Hannah Rothschild
English, which can express the thoughts of Hamlet and the tragedy of Lear, has no words for the shiver and the headache... The merest schoolgirl, when she falls in love, has Shakespeare or Keats to speak her mind for her, but let a sufferer try to describe a pain in his head to a doctor and language at once runs dry. ~ John Green
Tragedy Of The Commons quotes by John Green
The only choice once your world has been torn apart is to find your genius and live with that. 'Normal' is out of the question. The healing for veterans, or anyone going through great tragedy, is finding your natural spirit and your genius that was waiting to be found. That can now become the cohering principle in your life. The idea of patching someone up and back into normal when they've had extremely abnormal experiences is a misunderstanding. ~ Michael Meade
Tragedy Of The Commons quotes by Michael Meade
We all know the tragedy of the dustbowls, the cruel unforgivable erosions of the soil, the depletion of fish or game, and the shrinking of the noble forests. And we know that such catastrophes shrivel the spirit of the people ... The wilderness is pushed back, man is everywhere. Solitude, so vital to the individual man, is almost nowhere. ~ Ansel Adams
Tragedy Of The Commons quotes by Ansel Adams
The Holocaust is not only a tragedy of the Jewish people, it is a failure of humanity as a whole. ~ Moshe Katsav
Tragedy Of The Commons quotes by Moshe Katsav
And she felt like they, the two of them, right here, right now, could make something that defied tragedy. ~ Charlie Jane Anders
Tragedy Of The Commons quotes by Charlie Jane Anders
Spare a copper for our cause?" the girl with the coin cup asks, her voice weary.
"I can spare more than that," I say. I reach into my purse and giver her what real coins I have, and then I press my hand to hers and whisper, "Don't give up," watching the magic spark in her eyes.
"The tragedy of the Beardon's Bonnet Factory!" she shouts, a fire catching. "Six souls murdered for a profit! Will you let it stand, sir? Will you look away, m'um?"
Her sisters-in-arms raise their placards again. "Fair wages, fair treatment!" they call. "Justice!"
Their voices swell into a chorus that thunders through the dark London streets until it can no longer be ignored. ~ Libba Bray
Tragedy Of The Commons quotes by Libba Bray
As the tragic writer rids us of what is petty and ignoble in our nature, so also the humorist rids us of what is cautious, calculating, and priggish
about half of our social conscience, indeed. Both of them permit us, in blessed moments of revelation, to soar above the common level of our lives. ~ Robertson Davies
Tragedy Of The Commons quotes by Robertson Davies
