One thing that's certain: around the corner from every ugly thing, there's something really beautiful. If we stop at every bitter interaction; we'll never reach our destination. ~ Soledad O'Brien
Soledad quotes by Soledad O'Brien
I e-mail or phone my best girlfriend daily. Having people who know you well helps you stay grounded and gives perspective to whatever momentary drama you're going through. ~ Soledad O'Brien
Soledad quotes by Soledad O'Brien
His ruby red rimmed moist eyes were two glasses of cranberry. He wore a cashmere sweater the color of Earl Grey tea ... ~ Brandi L. Bates
Soledad quotes by Brandi L. Bates
I have four relatively small children, and around fourth grade, they start doing big projects on Native Americas: everything is Native Americans in elementary school. Do you know how many Native American dresses I've sewn, on and on; it's a full yearlong study. And then never again. As journalists, we never even cover Native Americans. ~ Soledad O'Brien
Soledad quotes by Soledad O'Brien
It is truly not fun to be the family that sticks out in an all-white community. On the other side, I have five brothers and sisters; we all look exactly the same, and we're very, very tight. The lessons about race were not pleasant, but there are things that I loved about my childhood. ~ Soledad O'Brien
Soledad quotes by Soledad O'Brien
If you can tell a story well, you can move people to do something. ~ Soledad O'Brien
Soledad quotes by Soledad O'Brien
I don't think being beautiful takes away from your credibility. ~ Soledad O'Brien
Soledad quotes by Soledad O'Brien
Our goal is to tell people about the International Space Station. I think very rarely people look up 250 miles and think, What are those guys working on, what are those men and women doing at this moment ... They're living and doing regular things, but also doing incredible work as well. We really want to bring that to people. ~ Soledad O'Brien
Soledad quotes by Soledad O'Brien
At screenings for 'Black in America,' I've heard people say, 'Well you know, I never thought you were black until you did Katrina, and then I thought you were black.' ~ Soledad O'Brien
Soledad quotes by Soledad O'Brien
We struck an unusual deal. I'll get to leave CNN with my catalog and documentaries. We were able to create a brand at CNN - 'Black in America' - that I now own. I can take that brand and extend it in any way I want. ~ Soledad O'Brien
Soledad quotes by Soledad O'Brien
I don't know how you can move out of one's socioeconomic category if you don't have education. ~ Soledad O'Brien
Soledad quotes by Soledad O'Brien
She discovered that the most comfortable position in society was slightly off to the side... ~ Soledad Puertolas
Soledad quotes by Soledad Puertolas
We have a foundation, the Soledad O'Brien Starfish Foundation. We send girls to and through college. We started-off saying we send girls to college, but to do so is not enough. Seeing them through college is the key. ~ Soledad O'Brien
Soledad quotes by Soledad O'Brien
Always zig when people expect you to zag. Confound them! ~ Soledad O'Brien
Soledad quotes by Soledad O'Brien
When I was leaving NBC News to go to CNN, people would say, 'What?! Why would you possibly leave the 'Today Show' to go to cable?' If I would've listened to people, I would've been on a great platform, but I wouldn't have grown as a journalist. So far, most of the steps in my career have been really good. ~ Soledad O'Brien
Soledad quotes by Soledad O'Brien
When I was 13, I began relaxing my hair, and that meant when I turned 18 it began to crack and fall off, and when I began anchoring, I had short, stubbly pieces of hair. And trying to report in San Francisco with fog meant my hair swelled. ~ Soledad O'Brien
Soledad quotes by Soledad O'Brien
[Author's Note:] When I was sixteen, two of my cousins were brutally raped by four strangers and thrown off a bridge in St. Louis, Missouri. My brother was beaten and also forced off the bridge. I wrote about that horrible crime in my first book, my memoir, A Rip in Heaven. Because that crime and the subsequent writing of the book were both formative experience in my life, I became a person who is always, automatically, more interested in stories about victims than perpetrators. I'm interested in characters who suffer inconceivable hardship, in people who manage to triumph over extraordinary trauma. Characters like Lydia and Soledad. I'm less interested in the violent, macho stories of gangsters and law enforcement. Or in any case, I think the world has enough stories like those. Some fiction set in the world of the cartels and narcotraficantes is compelling and important - I read much of it during my early research. Those novels provide readers with an understanding of the origins of the some of the violence to our south. But the depiction of that violence can feed into some of the worst stereotypes about Mexico. So I saw an opening for a novel that would press a little more intimately into those stories, to imagine people on the flip side of that prevailing narrative. Regular people like me. How would I manage if I lived in a place that began to collapse around me? If my children were in danger, how far would I go to save them? I wanted to write about women, whose stories a ~ Jeanine Cummins
Soledad quotes by Jeanine Cummins
I come to New Orleans so often that, one day soon, someone's going to declare me a native. I love the food. I love the music. I serve on the board of the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra. ~ Soledad O'Brien
Soledad quotes by Soledad O'Brien
There is nothing worse than doing nothing and saying nothing when your voice is needed, ~ Soledad O'Brien
Soledad quotes by Soledad O'Brien
I don't think journalism changes. It's about digging into stories and telling them well. The basic tenets of great reporting stay the same while things around it change. Technology has made reporting easier, but it has also caused job loss. Social media has increased discussion around topics, but it has its own challenges at times. ~ Soledad O'Brien
Soledad quotes by Soledad O'Brien
I would tell my 14 year old self to never ever, ever put all of your money in one bank account. And love the ones who love you back. You're going to want to quit ... DON'T! Oh, and get everything in writing. ~ Brandi L. Bates
Soledad quotes by Brandi L. Bates
Step out of the space you're in. Use fear to grow. We can change lives, starting with our own. ~ Soledad O'Brien
Soledad quotes by Soledad O'Brien
There are thousands of inspirational stories waiting to be told about young women who yearn for a great education. They are stories of struggle and stories of success, and they will inspire others to take action and work to change lives. ~ Soledad O'Brien
Soledad quotes by Soledad O'Brien
I've learned that fear limits you and your vision. It serves as blinders to what may be just a few steps down the road for you. The journey is valuable, but believing in your talents, your abilities, and your self-worth can empower you to walk down an even brighter path. Transforming fear into freedom - how great is that? ~ Soledad O'Brien
Soledad quotes by Soledad O'Brien
African-Americans assume I'm named after the notorious Soledad prison or Mount Soledad in California. Latinos want to know if I'm lonely. That doesn't fit, because I grew up with five siblings, and I have four kids of my own, so I'm not lonely at all, though I do often seek solitude, the actual meaning of my name. ~ Soledad O'Brien
Soledad quotes by Soledad O'Brien
Thus, as historian Soledad Loaeza has argued, the authoritarianism that distinguished Mexico during the second half of the 1960s should not be reduced to a series of "paranoid" acts of a single president (as Enrique Krauze and others have insisted). ~ Jaime Pensado
Soledad quotes by Jaime Pensado
Over the years, my husband and I have sent two dozen or more girls to college and helped them with whatever else they needed. ~ Soledad O'Brien
Soledad quotes by Soledad O'Brien
I guess after a certain age, things change and those things or people or friendships that happen in movies, just don't happen in real life. ~ Alberto Fuguet
Soledad quotes by Alberto Fuguet
As CNN saw our growth in African-American viewership, they affirmed a fundamental truth of news coverage - people will watch you if they see themselves in what you report. It doesn't hurt if the people doing the reporting look like them, too. ~ Soledad O'Brien
Soledad quotes by Soledad O'Brien
Sometimes I think the Most High believes I can shoulder the weight of 1000 stars. ~ Brandi L. Bates
Soledad quotes by Brandi L. Bates
At Al Jazeera, the first story I did was to sit down with a former Haitian dictator, Jean-Claude Duvalier, and grill him about crimes against humanity. Al Jazeera is giving me the opportunity to tell important stories and stories that I want to tell. ~ Soledad O'Brien
Soledad quotes by Soledad O'Brien
CNN, a part of the Time Warner company, lives for news about everything and anyone. In the office, the bosses openly discuss the need for a diverse staff and diverse stories, and each time we draw new viewers, the effort intensifies. ~ Soledad O'Brien
Soledad quotes by Soledad O'Brien
HBO is undeniably a leader in meaningful storytelling in a wide array of formats. I'm honored to join the REAL SPORTS team and look forward to continuing my fervor for uncovering unique and impactful stories. ~ Soledad O'Brien
Soledad quotes by Soledad O'Brien
I'm black. I'm Latina. My mom is Cuban. Afro-Cuban. My dad is white and Australian. ~ Soledad O'Brien
Soledad quotes by Soledad O'Brien
It is an empty room, that afterwards, a soledad, and it sits there at the center of a person's life and waits to be filled. ~ Daisy Hernandez
Soledad quotes by Daisy Hernandez
The Trader held the ring horizontal and let the fingertips of his right hand circle over it. As he did so, he closed his eyes, murmured something to himself, and was silent again. His eyes remained closed; he did not move.
"What's he doing?" whispered Walker.
Soledad shrugged her shoulders. "Something terribly powerful."
"Wrong." replied the Trader. "I'm concentrating on the mosquito bite on my left heel, so it will stop itching."
"Oh," Walker said seriously.
"Mosquito bite?" Soledad repeated.
"I can't catch ghosts if my foot is itching. I beg you for a little more understanding."
"But of course," Walker said spitefully. ~ Kai Meyer
Soledad quotes by Kai Meyer
We are all living in some sort of a hell, Elena, all of us, but we don't make someone pay the price for our deeds, do you know why? because everyone of us chooses his own hell, the one that makes him most comfortable. ~ Juan Jose Millas
Soledad quotes by Juan Jose Millas
Zach found himself remembering something he'd heard Soledad and Leo saying the previous night, about healing. That it was mysterious. That it took time. And that Lucy was just at the beginning. That a terrible thing had happened - two terrible things, really - but they were now over.
And that Lucy would be okay, in the end. ~ Nancy Werlin
Soledad quotes by Nancy Werlin
CoverGirl's Girls CAN movement is perfectly aligned with my passion for helping young women overcome life's challenges, and my commitment to highlighting girls' successes. I am thrilled to partner with CoverGirl to embark on this exciting journey to improve the lives of girls and women in the world. ~ Soledad O'Brien
Soledad quotes by Soledad O'Brien
In Soledad state prison, I fell in with a group of young blacks who, like myself, were in vociferous rebellion against what we perceived as a continuation of slavery on a higher plane. We cursed everything American---including baseball and hot dogs. All respect we may have had for politicians, preachers, lawyers, governors, Presidents, congressmen was utterly destroyed as we watched them temporizing and compromising over right and wrong, over legality and illegality, over constitutionality and unconstitutionality. We knew that in the end what they were clashing over was us, what to do with the blacks, and whether or not to start treating us as human beings. I despised all of them. ~ Eldridge Cleaver
Soledad quotes by Eldridge Cleaver
The thing I love about political interviews is, if you're really prepared, you can make great headway because these are the people for whom, theoretically at least, the buck stops. ~ Soledad O'Brien
Soledad quotes by Soledad O'Brien
Leo and Soledad simultaneously gave out a sort of half laugh, half snort. It was loud, and it was relieved, and it broke the tension and caused Pierre to bark again, indignantly.
All of which meant that neither of them heard it when Zach turned to Lucy in that same second and whispered:
There's something else you need to know. I'm not just your friend. I am completely in love with you. ~ Nancy Werlin
Soledad quotes by Nancy Werlin
Soledad Barrio is clearly a master - of thrilling steps and passionate movement. She stalks, she circles, she struts, she snaps her head - her feet drill the stage. ~ Robert Gottlieb
Soledad quotes by Robert Gottlieb
Not far around the corner from every ugly experience is something really beautiful. And if you stop at every bitter comment you will never reach that beauty.
Soledad O'Brien ~ Katie Couric
Soledad quotes by Katie Couric
I covered Katrina, I've covered the tsunamis, all of them, the Haiti earthquake ... you get to a certain point in your career where you say, 'I want to now cover what I want to cover.' ~ Soledad O'Brien
Soledad quotes by Soledad O'Brien
My trademark at CNN was really asking insightful questions and making sure people are understanding the connections in humanity, and I think that is the core of education. ~ Soledad O'Brien
Soledad quotes by Soledad O'Brien
It is better to be rich, happy and healthy, rather than poor, miserable and sick! ~ Samson Soledad
Soledad quotes by Samson Soledad
When I took a couple of years to do the documentaries after I left 'American Morning' - what was I gone for, five years? - I didn't feel that I was floating under the radar. ~ Soledad O'Brien
Soledad quotes by Soledad O'Brien
To me, Jeff Zucker is synonymous with winning. He's an incredible news executive. ~ Soledad O'Brien
Soledad quotes by Soledad O'Brien
Fruit falls when you shake the tree. You have to keep making things happen. ~ Brandi L. Bates
Soledad quotes by Brandi L. Bates
I have a philosophy that white people would be interested in Native Americans because, first of all, it's probably the only group as a country we all study and know the history and then never study again past the age of 10. So I think we have these things we believe are true, that are just not true about what an audience wants. ~ Soledad O'Brien
Soledad quotes by Soledad O'Brien
"Plaza de la Soledad" is a documentary about Carmen, Lety, Raquel and Esther, four strong women - middle-aged and older - who want to break a vicious circle that began with abuse and abandonment suffered from an early age. They simply want to have a better life. The film follows their quest to find true love and their capacity to transform themselves. ~ Maya Goded
Soledad quotes by Maya Goded
Is the capacity for cruelty inherent in all of us? ~ Soledad O'Brien
Soledad quotes by Soledad O'Brien
Why is it called tierra and not tierro? Why is it round, like two breasts sewn together, like the two halves of an orange - a naranja - or the belly of a pregnant woman, and has never had any phallic tendencies, even while it was first forming? Why do we say naturaleza, in the feminine, and not naturalezo? Why did the old poets prefer to write la mar and not el mar, the way most people do today? Why is it la noche, night, la madrugada, dawn, la soledad, solitude, la ternura, tenderness, la felicidad, happiness, la luz, light, la luna, the moon, las constelaciones, the constellations, la voz, a person's voice, las caricias, caresses, las flores, flowers, la melancolía, melancholy? Why would it seem that the really poetic words are in the feminine? But that's nonsense. Mentira, lie, is feminine, and that's not so poetic. And there are lots of poetic words that are masculine: el cielo, the sky, el alba, another word for dawn, el misterio, mystery, el desea, desire, el parto, childbirth, el bien, good as opposed to evil. And speaking of evil, that's masculine in gender, el mal, and so is power, el poder. Although we shouldn't forget el querer, loving, a word that belongs to the strategy of desire. And also has a little bit of goodness in it. Bondad, goodness, is a very pretty word, and very feminine - it's conjugated in the feminine. On the other hand, muerte, death, which is feminine, no matter how she gets herself up to look attractive and profound, could she ever seduce anyone ~ Zoé Valdés
Soledad quotes by Zoé Valdés
On Sunday night, my husband makes a five-course family dinner. ~ Soledad O'Brien
Soledad quotes by Soledad O'Brien
I've taken the leap of faith to stop punching the company time clock and start working for myself. I'm now the CEO of Starfish Media Group, my production company, in New York City. ~ Soledad O'Brien
Soledad quotes by Soledad O'Brien
Being an entrepreneur is a mindset. You have to see things as opportunities all the time. I like to do interviews. I like to push people on certain topics. I like to dig into the stories where there's not necessarily a right or wrong answer. ~ Soledad O'Brien
Soledad quotes by Soledad O'Brien
Stories are more than compelling facts. People remember stories more than they remember statistics. ~ Soledad O'Brien
Soledad quotes by Soledad O'Brien
They're talking as if nothing's happened, Soledad said to herself, and the jealousy ran from her ears into her heart, where it settled into her aorta and reshaped itself as longing and desire, the kind of want that makes one capable of poor but magnanimous decisions. ~ Derek Palacio
Soledad quotes by Derek Palacio
Am I a liberal or conservative? I'm neither. Like most Americans, I find politics very frustrating. Like most Americans, I'd like to hear from politicians the facts. That is what drives me. ~ Soledad O'Brien
Soledad quotes by Soledad O'Brien
What I think is great style advice that people have told me is that people who are confident look beautiful. No matter what they're wearing, no matter if they're inappropriately dressed, no matter if their hair's not really done right, eyebrows haven't been tweezed. ~ Soledad O'Brien
Soledad quotes by Soledad O'Brien
It is a sad day for our country when the moral foundation of our law and the acknowledgment of God has to be hidden from public view to appease a federal judge. ~ Soledad O'Brien
Soledad quotes by Soledad O'Brien
Nobody could call the work of Noche Flamenca & Soledad Barrio pallid. ~ Robert Gottlieb
Soledad quotes by Robert Gottlieb
At Harvard I was taking an African-American studies class, and we were reading about the tragic mulatto. Invariably, the tragic mulatto can't fit in either world and flings herself off a bridge. So I'm reading, and I'm like, 'Oh, my God, I think I'm in literature,' but my life was never like that. ~ Soledad O'Brien
