The masks we wear are simply veils that we have chosen to hide behind in order to get our way, or to demonstrate how we are reacting to the powers and forces that seem to influence us from the external world. They are part of our self image, and in some cases the mask is nothing more than a protective device, a defense mechanism. ~ John Randolph Price
Nespoli John quotes by John Randolph Price
In the realm of dream and imagination all men are equal. ~ John Christopher
Nespoli John quotes by John Christopher
The best thing about getting older is knowing history. The longer you live, the longer you have been in a sport, the more you know, and the more you know where things started. ~ John Madden
Nespoli John quotes by John Madden
Games are not so bad because the adrenalin keeps you going, but training on a daily basis when every time you move it hurts, that is a real battle. ~ John Terry
Nespoli John quotes by John Terry
You have the feeling that if you get a Pulitzer, you're somehow set for life. ~ John Sandford
Nespoli John quotes by John Sandford
The classic theology of my tradition comes from the French Renaissance. [William] Shakespeare was born in 1564, the year [John] Calvin died, and that theology was very influential in England in his lifetime. I think Shakespeare was attentive to questions raised by it, about human nature, history, reality itself. I find the two literatures to be mutually illuminating. ~ Marilynne Robinson
Nespoli John quotes by Marilynne Robinson
We are, all of us, utterly committed and deeply devoted to our "style", our "way", our "approach to life." We have absolutely no intention of giving it up. Not even for love. So God creates an environment where we have to. It's called marriage. ~ John Eldredge
Nespoli John quotes by John Eldredge
I am Quinn's father. I will do everything in my power to provide her with the love and support she deserves. ~ John Edwards
Nespoli John quotes by John Edwards
By the boats in the harbor. What else would you like to know?" "You plan to keep him tomorrow night?" "I get thirty-six hours, once a month. That's 9:00 a.m. tomorrow until 9:00 p.m. Sunday. Do the math. It's not that complicated." The waiter pops in to ~ John Grisham
Nespoli John quotes by John Grisham
I feel like I'm dropping such a long way down again." "I seem to be dropping into a cold dark wet place, where no one's been before and noone can every follow. There's no future there; just a past that sometimes fools you into thinking it's the future. It's the most alone place you can ever be and, when you go there, you not only cease to exist in real life, you also cease to exist in their consciousness and in their memories. ~ John Marsden
Nespoli John quotes by John Marsden
I believe the greater the handicap, the greater the triumph. ~ John H. Johnson
Nespoli John quotes by John H. Johnson
I'm wondering how many times he can possibly use the word alliance in one sentence when Tiny Cooper cuts Mr. Fortson off by saying, "Hey, wait, Jane, you're straight?"
And she nods without realign looking up and then mumbles, "I mean, I think so, anyway."
"You should date Grayson," Tiny says. "He thinks you're super cute."
If i were stand on a scale fully dressed, sopping wet, holding ten-pound dumbbells in each hand and balancing a stack of hardcover books on my head, I'd weigh about 180 pounds, which is approximately equal to the weight of Tiny Cooper's left tricep. But in this moment, I could beat the holy living shit out of Tiny Cooper. And I would, I swear to God, except I'm too busy trying to disappear. ~ John Green
Nespoli John quotes by John Green
I had never thought of Marley as any kind of model, but sitting there sipping my beer, I was aware that maybe he held the secret for a good life. Never slow down, never look back, live each day w/ adolescent verve and spunk and curiosity and playfulness. ~ John Grogan
Nespoli John quotes by John Grogan
Even the word depression itself was the terminological product of an effort to soften the connotation of deep trouble. In the last century, the term crisis was normally employed. With time, however, this acquired the connotation of the misfortune it described. ~ John Kenneth Galbraith
Nespoli John quotes by John Kenneth Galbraith
I love being the center of attention. ~ John Mayer
Nespoli John quotes by John Mayer
He had a love of books, for in books was recorded the knowledge of all those who had gone before him. ~ John Connolly
Nespoli John quotes by John Connolly
His life was one long extravaganza, like living inside a Faberge egg. ~ John Lahr
Nespoli John quotes by John Lahr
No!' I say. (I thought about saying 'NO!', but then I thought, no.) ~ John Niven
Nespoli John quotes by John Niven
We don't sign an artist to fill a void, ever. I'll never find a Taylor Swift. You can't find a new Madonna, you cannot find a Prince, a Bob Marley, a John Lennon. You won't find another Kanye West. We simply deal with people as they walk in, and we say we either love them or we don't. ~ L.A. Reid
Nespoli John quotes by L.A. Reid
Those of us who would follow Jesus are precluded from drawing the sword. We are people who love our enemies; who prefer to undergo violence rather than inflict it upon others; who reject every form of violence, from nuclear weapons to chemical weapons to Trident submarines to handguns. (...) We renounce war and violent self-defense, tear up the just-war theory, and embrace gospel nonviolence. We not only put back any swords we have, but we beat them into plowshares. The unarmed Christ disarms us. Christ's community, the Church, is a community of nonviolence. ~ John Dear
Nespoli John quotes by John Dear
It's a dangerous thing to name yourself wrongly or to name yourself unjustly. ~ John O'Donohue
Nespoli John quotes by John O'Donohue
Whereas it has long been known and declared that the poor have no right to the property of the rich, I wish it also to be known and declared that the rich have no right to the property of the poor. ~ John Ruskin
Nespoli John quotes by John Ruskin
For who that noght dar undertake,
Be riht he schal no profit take
[For who that dare not undertake,
By right he shall no profit take.
i.e., Nothing ventured, nothing gained.] ~ John Gower
Nespoli John quotes by John Gower
The problem with happy endings, I said, is that they're either not really happy, or not really endings, you know? In real life, some things get better and some things get worse. And then eventually you die. ~ John Green
Nespoli John quotes by John Green
Jay was attacked with peculiar venom. Near his New York home, the walls of a building were defaced with the gigantic words, 'Damn John Jay. Damn everyone that won't damn John Jay. Damn everyone that won't put up lights in the windows and sit up all night damning John Jay. ~ Ron Chernow
Nespoli John quotes by Ron Chernow

Nespoli John quotes by John Shimkus
Come to the sunset tree! The day is past and gone; The woodman's axe lies free, And the reaper's work is done. ~ John Milton
Nespoli John quotes by John Milton
All violent feelings have the same effect. They produce in us a falseness in all our impressions of external things, which I would generally characterize as the pathetic fallacy. ~ John Ruskin
Nespoli John quotes by John Ruskin
The smart phone isn't a perfect device, as we all know. It forces the world into a tiny screen. It runs out of battery, bandwidth, and power. It distracts us from the world around us. ~ John Battelle
Nespoli John quotes by John Battelle
The ocean is everywhere. Not only does it stretch to the horizon in all directions, it's under everything as well. I don't mean underground, I mean - it's fundamental, you might say. If what's around us is a picture, then this is what it's drawn on. Reverend Mapple had a word for it, the subjectile. Lottie said it was like, if you could cut a hole in the air, black water would come pouring out of it. ~ John Langan
Nespoli John quotes by John Langan
A mans life will be of the character of his thought. His outward life will be as the inner impulse is. ~ John G. Lake
Nespoli John quotes by John G. Lake
God brings men into deep waters not to drown them, but to cleanse them.
~ John H. Aughey
Nespoli John quotes by John H. Aughey
We academic scientists move within a certain sphere, we can go on being useless up to a point, in the confidence that sooner or later some use will be found for our studies. The mathematician, of course, prides himself on being totally useless, but usually turns out to be the most useful of the lot. He finds the solution but he is not interested in what the problem is: sooner or later, someone will find the problem to which his solution is the answer. ~ John Desmond Bernal
Nespoli John quotes by John Desmond Bernal
Weirdly, D&D didn't encourage my leanings towards trying magic of my own at all. In fact, it frustrated them. Even the most pompous and ambitious historical magicians, from the Zaroastrian Magi through John Dee, Francis Barrett and Aleister Crowley, never claimed to be able to throw fireballs or lightning bolts like D&D wizards can. So D&D was never going to feed the fantasies of practising magic in the real world. That is all about gaining secret knowledge, a higher level of perception or inflicting misfortune or a boon on someone rather than causing a poisonous cloud of vapor to pour from your fingers (Cloudkill, deadly to creatures with less than 5 hit dice, for those who are interested). The game, as we played it, just doesn't support the occult idea of magic.

In fact, it might even be argued that, by giving such a powerful prop to my imagination, D&D stopped me from going deeper into the occult in real life. I certainly had all the qualifications - bullied power-hungry twerp with no discernable skill in conventional fields and no immediate hope of a girlfriend who wasn't mentally ill. It's amazing I'm not out sacrificing goats to this day. ~ Mark Barrowcliffe
Nespoli John quotes by Mark Barrowcliffe
There is no work, however vile or sordid, that does not glisten before God. ~ John Calvin
Nespoli John quotes by John Calvin
And so sepĂșlchred in such pomp dost lie,
That kings for such a tomb would wish to die. ~ John Milton
Nespoli John quotes by John Milton
I don't think I've ever stepped into a gym - they won't let me smoke there. I just thank God Miller Lite isn't as fattening as most beers. If I cut back on beer, though, I'd look anorexic. ~ John Daly
Nespoli John quotes by John Daly
Be a river - not a reservoir. ~ John C. Maxwell
Nespoli John quotes by John C. Maxwell
From a writer's standpoint, each character and story presents its own unique challenges and delights. I'm deeply curious about all of my characters, and I love peeling away their layers to see what's underneath their skin, or secreted deep within their hearts. ~ Tina St. John
Nespoli John quotes by Tina St. John
The people of Ohio are the people of America. The people of America are reflected in Ohio. Our message has to be big, and bold, and positive, and connect, not just with people's heads but also connect with their hearts. If we do it, we will beat Hillary Clinton, and we will run the White House, and we will strengthen and fix America. ~ John Kasich
Nespoli John quotes by John Kasich
