I wish I had more of your staunch American character,
Strong, bold, and unflinching, like the desert or a New York skyscraper.
But I am more like the English weather
Unpredictable and ever changing,
Prone to downpours.
Battered by sudden winds - thin skinned, eye-bagged and always cold,
Proud and leaking. ~ Florence Welch
English Weather quotes by Florence Welch
It is one of the oddest and sometimes one of the most charming characteristics of English weather that at times one season borrows complete days from another, spring from summer, winter from spring. And it may be that these milky days of winter, which seem borrowed from April, are automatically filled with the sadness of things out of their time. ~ H.E. Bates
English Weather quotes by H.E. Bates
English rain feels obligatory, like paperwork. It dampens already damn days and slicks the stones. ~ Maureen Johnson
English Weather quotes by Maureen Johnson
Partly for this reason Sir Thomas Gresham had recently built the Royal Exchange, the most fabulous commercial building of its day. (Gresham is traditionally associated with Gresham's law - that bad money drives out good - which he may or may not actually have formulated.) Modeled on the Bourse in Antwerp, the Exchange contained 150 small shops, making it one of the world's first shopping malls, but its primary purpose and virtue was that for the first time it allowed City merchants - some four thousand of them - to conduct their business indoors out of the rain. We may marvel that they waited so long to escape the English weather, but there we are. ~ Bill Bryson
English Weather quotes by Bill Bryson
When the American people get through with the English language, it will look as if it had been run over by a musical comedy. ~ Finley Peter Dunne
English Weather quotes by Finley Peter Dunne
In Lisbon, a street cry gloated over the Spanish defeat: Which ships got home? The ones the English missed. And where are the rest? The waves will tell you. What happened to them? It is said they are lost. Do we know their names? They know them in London. Oh, ~ Margaret George
English Weather quotes by Margaret George
I just remembered songs my grandmother taught me, and songs that I learned for the recordings. But, then I learned to speak Italian. When I was there, I hired a professor who stayed with me 24 hours a day. She wouldn't let me speak a word of English. ~ Connie Francis
English Weather quotes by Connie Francis
makeup that Langdon could see, her complexion appeared unusually smooth, the only blemish a tiny beauty mark just above her lips. Her eyes, though a gentle brown, seemed unusually penetrating, as if they had witnessed a profundity of experience rarely encountered by a person her age. 'Dr. Marconi doesn't speak much English,' she said, sitting down beside him, 'and he asked me to fill out your admittance form.' She gave ~ Dan Brown
English Weather quotes by Dan Brown
The acknowledgement that this person is English, white, or French, or German, this is Portuguese, this is Rwandan, this is Senegalese, this is a black South Africans is a glorious thing. To speak of those positively, to say that they have characteristics, each one of them, that the others almost always do not have, and that there is a complementarily about it. ~ Desmond Tutu
English Weather quotes by Desmond Tutu
It's hard for me to perform in English. ~ Hiroyuki Sanada
English Weather quotes by Hiroyuki Sanada
I would like to offer a candidate to be added to the venerable list of English collective nouns: a scum of politicians. ~ John P. Wheeler III
English Weather quotes by John P. Wheeler III
He seems to have declared war on the King's English as well as on the English king. ~ Arthur Conan Doyle
English Weather quotes by Arthur Conan Doyle
Many Continentals tink life is a game; the English think cricet is a game. ~ George Mikes
English Weather quotes by George Mikes
I didn't know shorthand either. This meant I couldn't get a good job after college. My mother kept telling me nobody wanted a plain English major. But an English major who knew shorthand would be something else again. Everybody would want her. She would be in demand among all the up-and-coming young men and she would transcribe letter after thrilling letter. The trouble was, I hated the idea of serving men in any way. I wanted to dictate my own thrilling letters. ~ Sylvia Plath
English Weather quotes by Sylvia Plath
I yearn for empty thoughts and silence in my head. For someone to sit down beside me, to hold my hand and take away the cold sting of loneliness that creeps under my skin like an English winter. ~ Malia Zaidi
English Weather quotes by Malia Zaidi
The best weather prediction for the present moment is to look out of the window! ~ Mehmet Murat Ildan
English Weather quotes by Mehmet Murat Ildan
I can wear a baseball cap; I am entitled to wear a baseball cap. I am genetically pre-disposed to wear a baseball cap, whereas most English people look wrong in a baseball cap. ~ Bill Bryson
English Weather quotes by Bill Bryson
She had another English word. She carried it all the way down the corridor. ~ Monica Ali
English Weather quotes by Monica Ali
In fact, I didn't like traveling first class at all. Yes, it was nice to have a bathroom in a hotel and fine service at breakfast...but none of it seemed foreign enough for me. It was all so pleasantly bland that I felt as if I were back on the SS America. I don't like it when everyone speaks perfect English; I'd much rather struggle with my phrasebook. ~ Julia Child
English Weather quotes by Julia Child
English policy may not yet have made the definite decision to attack us; but it doubtless wishes, by all and every means, even the most extreme, to hinder every further expansion of German international influence and of German maritime power. ~ Bernhard Von Bulow
English Weather quotes by Bernhard Von Bulow
These developments - a massive transfer of land by way of inheritance and purchase, an unprecedented rise in the profitability of land and increasing intermarriage between Celtic and English dynasties - helped to consolidate a new unitary ruling class in place of the more separate and specific landed establishments that had characterised England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland in the Tudor and Stuart eras. ~ Linda Colley
English Weather quotes by Linda Colley
I realize that the memories I cherish most are not the first night successes, but of simple, everyday things: walking through our garden in the country after rain; sitting outside a cafe in Provence, drinking the vin de pays; staying at a little hotel in an English market town with Larry, in the early days after our marriage, when he was serving in the Fleet Air Arm, and I was touring Scotland, so that we had to make long treks to spend weekends together. ~ Vivien Leigh
English Weather quotes by Vivien Leigh
In Middle English, a frankeleyn is a free man, an owner of land but not of title: neither a serf nor a peasant but not a nobleman, either. There ~ Jill Lepore
English Weather quotes by Jill Lepore
Our testimonies, like ... trees, must be built on a sure foundation, deeply rooted in the gospel of Jesus Christ, so that when the winds and rains come into our lives, as they surely will, we will be strong enough to weather the storms that rage about us. ~ Sheldon F. Child
English Weather quotes by Sheldon F. Child
I nearly fell asleep over Dickens in English. Mind you, he's snoozeworthy at the best of times. ~ Jo Walton
English Weather quotes by Jo Walton
One day a little old lady came and asked my name, saying she couldn't read my nametag. I told her and reached for the little slip of paper she held, but she put it behind her back. It seemed she wanted to chat before giving it up. Fine with me. We chatted about our matching cardigans (the fact that I dress like a little old lady was not lost on me) and we chatted about how the Portland weather bothered her bones. We talked for a long while about her husband and how much she'd grown to hate him over the years. Then, since I guessed I'd earned her trust, she handed me her slip of paper. It was for a book on exotic poisons. I got her the book and spent the next few weeks scanning the obituaries for every old man that had died. So, yes, folks I may be an accomplice to murder. Don't say there's no excitement at the library. ~ Nick Pageant
English Weather quotes by Nick Pageant
Words, too, have genuine substance
mass and weight and specific gravity. ~ Tim O'Brien
English Weather quotes by Tim O'Brien
Silly of me not to have realized it. One often finds Greek temples lurking in the woods of English estates. Sneaky things, temples. ~ Victoria Alexander
English Weather quotes by Victoria Alexander
I love the novel of 'The English Patient'; I think it's a profoundly beautiful novel. I love the movie of 'The English Patient'; I think it's a profoundly beautiful movie. And they're totally different. You accept each on its own terms, and that's kind of the ideal. ~ Ayelet Waldman
English Weather quotes by Ayelet Waldman
It don't take a weather man to look around and see the weather, Jeb said he'd deliver Florida folks and boy did he ever, and we hold these truths to be self evident number one George W Bush is not president. Number two America isn't a true democracy. And number three the media is not fooling me. ~ Ani DiFranco

If the English had deep-dish pizza they could have kept their empire. ~ Daniel Pinkwater
English Weather quotes by Daniel Pinkwater
After four or five months of reading Hemingway, I decided to write a story. I had in the past written stories for English classes. These had all been about white people, because white people's stories seemed to matter more. Also, I hadn't known how to write about Indians. How would I translate the various family relations, the difference between an uncle who is a father's brother and an uncle who is a mother's brother? Having read Hemingway, I knew that I should just push all the exotic things to the side as if they didn't matter, that this was how one used exoticism - by not bothering to explain.

The first story I wrote was about my brother coughing. I woke one night to the sound of Birju coughing downstairs and then could not go back to sleep. To be woken this way and not be able to return to sleep struck me as sad enough to merit a reader's attention. Also, Hemingway had written a story about a man being woken because somebody is dying nearby, and the man is forced to witness the death.

I got up from my bed and turned on the light. I then returned to bed with a spiral-bound notebook and placed it against my knees. I began my story in the middle of the action the way Hemingway did. I wrote:

The coughing wakes me. My wife coughs and coughs, and then when her throat is clear, she moans. The nurse's aide moves back and forth downstairs. The hospital bed jingles.

I wrote that it was a spouse coughing because that seemed something a re ~ Akhil Sharma
English Weather quotes by Akhil Sharma
Each one of us has lived through some devastation, some loneliness, some weather superstorm or spiritual superstorm, when we look at each other we must say, I understand. I understand how you feel because I have been there myself. We must support each other and empathize with each other because each of us is more alike than we are unalike. ~ Maya Angelou
English Weather quotes by Maya Angelou
Nature is also God's way of communicating with us. Jesus himself used nature to teach us about God. He used birds and flowers, the weather, precious stones ... Looking at nature, we can come to understand God himself. ~ Adelina St. Clair
