I have to keep going, as there are always people on my track. I have to publish my present work as rapidly as possible in order to keep in the race. The best sprinters in this road of investigation are Becquerel and the Curies ... ~ Ernest Rutherford
Antoine Henri Becquerel quotes by Ernest Rutherford
This [a surprise attack] is an operation by no means to be despised in war, although it is rare, and less brilliant than a great strategic combination which renders victory certain even before the battle is fought. ~ Antoine-Henri Jomini
Antoine Henri Becquerel quotes by Antoine-Henri Jomini
[Concerning] phosphorescent bodies, and in particular to uranium salts whose phosphorescence has a very brief duration. With the double sulfate of uranium and potassium ... I was able to perform the following experiment: One wraps a Lumière photographic plate with a bromide emulsion in two sheets of very thick black paper, such that the plate does not become clouded upon being exposed to the sun for a day. One places on the sheet of paper, on the outside, a slab of the phosphorescent substance, and one exposes the whole to the sun for several hours. When one then develops the photographic plate, one recognizes that the silhouette of the phosphorescent substance appears in black on the negative. If one places between the phosphorescent substance and the paper a piece of money or a metal screen pierced with a cut-out design, one sees the image of these objects appear on the negative. One can repeat the same experiments placing a thin pane of glass between the phosphorescent substance and the paper, which excludes the possibility of chemical action due to vapors which might emanate from the substance when heated by the sun's rays. One must conclude from these experiments that the phosphorescent substance in question emits rays which pass through the opaque paper and reduces silver salts.

[Although the sun is irrelevant, and he misinterprets the role of phosphorescence, he has discovered the effect of radioactivity.] ~ Henri Becquerel
Antoine Henri Becquerel quotes by Henri Becquerel
A state attacked by another which renews an old claim rarely yields it without a war: it prefers to defend its territory, as is always more honorable. But it may be advantageous to take the offensive, instead of awaiting the attack on the frontiers. ~ Antoine-Henri Jomini
Antoine Henri Becquerel quotes by Antoine-Henri Jomini
It is certainly of great importance for a general to keep his plans secret; and Frederick the Great was right when he said that if his night-cap knew what was in his head he would throw it into the fire. That kind of secrecy was practicable in Frederick's time when his whole army was kept closely about him; but when maneuvers of the vastness of Napoleon's are executed, and war is waged as in our day, what concert of action can be expected from generals who are utterly ignorant of what is going on around them? ~ Antoine-Henri Jomini
Antoine Henri Becquerel quotes by Antoine-Henri Jomini
As the excited passions of hostile people are of themselves a powerful enemy, both the general and his government should use their best efforts to allay them. ~ Antoine-Henri Jomini
Antoine Henri Becquerel quotes by Antoine-Henri Jomini
Pierre Curie voluntarily exposed his arm to the action of radium for several hours. This resulted in damage resembling a burn that developed progressively and required several months to heal. Henri Becquerel had by accident a similar burn as a result of carrying in his vest pocket a glass tube containing radium salt. He came to tell us of this evil effect of radium, exclaiming in a manner at once delighted and annoyed: "I love it, but I owe it a grudge." ~ Marie Curie
Antoine Henri Becquerel quotes by Marie Curie
Principal courtyard, which was very large, with walks encircling it under arcades in the old Florentine fashion, and gardens planted with magnificent trees. In the dining-room, a long and superb gallery which was situated on the ground-floor and opened on the gardens, M. Henri Puget had entertained in state, on July 29, 1714, My Lords Charles Brulart de Genlis, archbishop; Prince d'Embrun; Antoine de Mesgrigny, the capuchin, Bishop of Grasse; Philippe de Vendome, Grand Prior of France, Abbe of Saint Honore de Lerins; Francois de Berton de Crillon, bishop, Baron de Vence; Cesar de Sabran de Forcalquier, bishop, Seignor of Glandeve; and Jean Soanen, Priest of the Oratory, preacher in ordinary to the king, bishop, Seignor of Senez. The portraits of these seven reverend personages decorated this apartment; and this memorable date, the 29th of July, 1714, was there engraved in letters of gold on a table of white marble. ~ Victor Hugo
Antoine Henri Becquerel quotes by Victor Hugo
Logistics comprises the means and arrangements which work out the plans of strategy and tactics. Strategy decides where to act; logistics brings the troops to this point. ~ Antoine-Henri Jomini
Antoine Henri Becquerel quotes by Antoine-Henri Jomini
Knowledge of anatomy is a tool like good brushes. ~ Robert Henri
Antoine Henri Becquerel quotes by Robert Henri
And when the hour of his departure drew near--

"Ah," said the fox, "I shall cry."

"It is your own fault," said the little prince. "I never wished you any sort of harm; but you wanted me to tame you . . ."

"Yes, that is so," said the fox.

"But now you are going to cry!" said the little prince.

"Yes, that is so," said the fox.

"Then it has done you no good at all!"

"It has done me good," said the fox, "because of the color of the wheat fields." And then he added:

"Go and look again at the roses. You will understand now that yours is unique in all the world. Then come back to say goodbye to me, and I will make you a present of a secret."

The little prince went away, to look again at the roses.
....
And he went back to meet the fox.

"Goodbye," he said.

"Goodbye," said the fox. "And now here is my secret, a very simple secret: It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye."

"What is essential is invisible to the eye," the little prince repeated, so that he would be sure to remember.

"It is the time you have wasted for your rose that makes your rose so important."

"It is the time I have wasted for my rose--" said the little prince, so that he would be sure to remember.

"Men have forgotten this truth," said the fox. "But you must not forget it. You become r ~ Antoine De Saint Exupery
Antoine Henri Becquerel quotes by Antoine De Saint Exupery
May your criminal enjoyments vanish as a shadow! may your ill-gotten wealth leave you without a resource; and may you yourself remain alone and deserted, to learn the vanity of these things, which now divert you from better pursuits! ~ Antoine Francois Prevost D'Exiles
Antoine Henri Becquerel quotes by Antoine Francois Prevost D'Exiles
On a day of burial there is no perspective
for space itself is annihilated. Your dead friend is still a fragmentary being. The day you bury him is a day of chores and crowds, of hands false or true to be shaken, of the immediate cares of mourning. The dead friend will not really die until tomorrow, when silence is round you again. Then he will show himself complete, as he was
to tear himself away, as he was, from the substantial you. Only then will you cry out because of him who is leaving and whom you cannot detain. ~ Antoine De Saint Exupery
Antoine Henri Becquerel quotes by Antoine De Saint Exupery
Without hard work, talent is not enough ~ Henri Mattise ~ Katrina Jack
Antoine Henri Becquerel quotes by Katrina Jack
When a people, having become free, establish wise laws, their revolution is complete ... Peace and prosperity, public virtue, victory, everything is in the vigor of the laws. Outside of the laws, everything is sterile and dead. ~ Louis Antoine De Saint-Just
Antoine Henri Becquerel quotes by Louis Antoine De Saint-Just
Action and personal happiness have no truck with each other; they are eternally at war. ~ Antoine De Saint Exupery
Antoine Henri Becquerel quotes by Antoine De Saint Exupery
When you have got quite alone, sit down and be lonely…fold your hands in your lap, and be still. Do not try to think anything… by and by, it may be, you will begin to know something of nature. Nature will soon speak to you, or not until, as Henri Vaughn says, some veil be broken in you ~ George MacDonald
Antoine Henri Becquerel quotes by George MacDonald
What are you trying to say?"
All men have the stars," he answered, "but they are not the same things for different people. For some, who are travelers, the stars are guides. For others they are no more than little lights in the sky. For others, who are scholars, they are problems. For my businessman they are wealth. But all these stars are silent. You - only you - will have stars that can laugh!"
And he laughed again.
And when your sorrow is comforted (time soothes all sorrows) you will be content that you have known me. You will always be my friend. You will want to laugh with me. And you will sometimes open your window, so, for that pleasure... And your friends will be properly astonished to see you laughing as you look up at the sky! Then you will say to them, "Yes, the stars always makes me laugh!" And they will think you are crazy. It will be a very shabby trick that I shall have played on you..."
And he laughed again.
It will be as if, in place of the stars, I have given you a great number of little bells that knew how to laugh..."
And he laughed again. ~ Antoine De Saint Exupery
Antoine Henri Becquerel quotes by Antoine De Saint Exupery
Do not worry about your originality. You could not get rid of it even if you wanted to. ~ Robert Henri
Antoine Henri Becquerel quotes by Robert Henri
Those who are marginal in the world are central in the Church, and that is how it is supposed to be! Thus we are called as members of the Church to keep going to the margins of our society. The homeless, the starving, parentless children, people with AIDS, our emotionally disturbed brothers and sisters - they require our first attention. ~ Henri Nouwen
Antoine Henri Becquerel quotes by Henri Nouwen
Clever people will recognize and tolerate nothing but cleverness. ~ Henri Frederic Amiel
Antoine Henri Becquerel quotes by Henri Frederic Amiel
It is a notable circumstance that mothers who are themselves open to severe comments as to their, moral character, are generally most solicitous as to the virtuous behavior of their daughters. ~ Antoine Rivarol
Antoine Henri Becquerel quotes by Antoine Rivarol
Discipline in the spiritual life is the concentrated effort to create the space and time where God can become our master and where we can respond freely to God's guidance. ~ Henri Nouwen
Antoine Henri Becquerel quotes by Henri Nouwen
Some photographs are like a Chekhov short story or a Maupassant story. They're quick things and there's a whole world in them. But one is unconscious of it while shooting. ~ Henri Cartier-Bresson
Antoine Henri Becquerel quotes by Henri Cartier-Bresson
The beginning and the end of all Christian leadership is to give your life for others. ~ Henri J.M. Nouwen
Antoine Henri Becquerel quotes by Henri J.M. Nouwen
The dance of life finds its beginnings in grief ... Here a completely new way of living is revealed. It is the way in which pain can be embraced, not out of a desire to suffer, but in the knowledge that something new will be born in the pain. ~ Henri Nouwen
Antoine Henri Becquerel quotes by Henri Nouwen
Life does not cease to be funny when people die any more than it ceases to be serious when people laugh. ~ Antoine De Saint Exupery
Antoine Henri Becquerel quotes by Antoine De Saint Exupery

Antoine Henri Becquerel quotes by Henri Frederic Amiel

Antoine Henri Becquerel quotes by Henri Frederic Amiel
Let us be French as the Americans are English. ~ Henri Bourassa
Antoine Henri Becquerel quotes by Henri Bourassa
Jesus invites us to abide in his love. That means to dwell with all that I am in him. It is an invitation to a total belonging, to full intimacy, to an unlimited being-with. The light of the Spirit reveals to us that love conquers all fear. ~ Henri Nouwen
Antoine Henri Becquerel quotes by Henri Nouwen
Because we are saturated with life, because we are human, our strongest motive is life, humanity; and the stronger the motive back of the line the stronger, and therefore more beautiful, the line will be. ~ Robert Henri
Antoine Henri Becquerel quotes by Robert Henri
Spiritual formation is not about steps or stages on the way to perfection. It's about the movements from the mind to the heart through prayer in its many forms that reunite us with God, each other, and our truest selves. ~ Henri J.M. Nouwen
Antoine Henri Becquerel quotes by Henri J.M. Nouwen
Thinking should be done before and after, not during photographing. ~ Henri Cartier-Bresson
Antoine Henri Becquerel quotes by Henri Cartier-Bresson
Turn your eyes whither you will, enter into whatever temple you please, you will find there on the very threshold Prophecy and Sacrament ... whoever despises these two things, infallibly bends towards earth, knowing nothing of God but his name, and holding with him no other relations than ingratitude and forgetfulness. ~ Jean-Baptiste Henri Lacordaire
Antoine Henri Becquerel quotes by Jean-Baptiste Henri Lacordaire
Drawing is like making an expressive gesture with the advantage of permanence. ~ Henri Matisse
