The most delightful and choicest pleasure is that which is hinted at, but never told. ~ Chretien De Troyes
Arthurian Romances quotes by Chretien De Troyes
The big things in the average person's life are the romances that they have - and then the destruction and loss of them. Parents, siblings, children, the death of parents, family tension ... these are monumental things. They struck me as being interesting to write about. I didn't have a very exotic life, but all this stuff happened to me. ~ Loudon Wainwright III
Arthurian Romances quotes by Loudon Wainwright III
He holds the sword!' shouted Merlin. 'And that has not changed. Whoever would be king must first take the sword from Arthur's hand. For I tell you truly, none among you will be king without it! ~ Stephen R. Lawhead
Arthurian Romances quotes by Stephen R. Lawhead
Is he crazy? No one has ever told me my doodles are good, not that I flash them around or anything. Gen likes them, but she also thinks vampire romances are literature and sings along to 'Islands in the Stream.' Her tastes are dubious. She's not a reliable source. ~ Jules Barnard
Arthurian Romances quotes by Jules Barnard
Love hurts.

Think back over romance novels you've loved or the genre-defining books that drive our industry. The most unforgettable stories and characters spring from crushing opposition. What we remember about romance novels is the darkness that drives them. Three hundred pages of folks being happy together makes for a hefty sleeping pill, but three hundred pages of a couple finding a way to be happy in the face of impossible odds makes our hearts soar. In darkness, we are all alone.

So don't just make love, make anguish for your characters. As you structure a story, don't satisfy your hero's desires, thwart them. Make sure your solutions create new problems. Nurture your characters doubts and despair. Make them earn the happy ending they want, even better…make them deserve it. Delay and disappointment charge situations and validate character growth. Misery accompanies love. It's no accident that many of the stories we think of as timeless romances in Western Literature are fiercely tragic: Romeo and Juliet, Tristan and Isolde, Cupid and Psyche… the pain in them drags us back again and again, hoping that this time we'll find a way out of the dark.

Only if you let your characters get lost will we get lost in them. And that, more than anything else, is what romance can and should do for its protagonists and its readers: lead us through the labyrinth, skirt the monstrous despair roaming its halls, and find our way into daylight. ~ Damon Suede
Arthurian Romances quotes by Damon Suede
I searched until I panted for breath, but could not find it. The solid stone structure was nowhere to be seen. The house was gone - and Merlin with it. ~ Stephen R. Lawhead
Arthurian Romances quotes by Stephen R. Lawhead
Merlin, do you mind?' It was the King who asked me, a man as old and wise as myself; a man who could see past his own crowding problems, and guess what it might men to me, to walk in dead air where once the world had been a god-filled garden. ~ Mary Stewart
Arthurian Romances quotes by Mary Stewart
With her face tilted up to his, the subtle edge of moonlight touched along the edge of one high cheekbone, the tilted edge of one eye, and those beautiful, enticing lips. Obeying an impulse he couldn't put into words, he lowered his head and covered her mouth with his. ~ Thea Harrison
Arthurian Romances quotes by Thea Harrison
Like the Arthurian years at Camelot, the Sixties constituted a breakthrough, a fleeting moment of glory, a time when a significant little chunk of humanity briefly realised its moral potential and flirted with its neurological destiny, a collective spiritual awakening that flared brilliantly until the barbaric and mediocre impulses of the species drew tight once more the curtains of darkness. ~ Tom Robbins
Arthurian Romances quotes by Tom Robbins
Growing up in England, I was constantly surrounded by the Arthurian legend. ~ Jamie Campbell Bower
Arthurian Romances quotes by Jamie Campbell Bower
[...] all expressions of creativity have a structure at work within them, most particularly those who adhere to a classical form. All romances are the same in the same way that all choreographed ballets are the same. Each ballet is a written sequence of the same steps, but each performance is remarquably different [...] ~ Sarah Wendell
Arthurian Romances quotes by Sarah Wendell
Stories require faith, not facts. ~ T.A. Barron
Arthurian Romances quotes by T.A. Barron
Ah Gawaine, Gawaine, ye have betrayed me; for never shall my court be amended by you, but ye will never be sorry for me as I am for you ~ Thomas Malory
Arthurian Romances quotes by Thomas Malory
Romance ... affection ... these are what give our lives value. They justify all the suffering of life. My goal is to always reinvent heroic romances and present larger-than-life characters that will inspire readers to fall in love and expand their own lives. ~ Chuck Palahniuk
Arthurian Romances quotes by Chuck Palahniuk
Why does the third of the three brothers, who shares his food with the old woman in the wood, go on to become king of the country? Why does James Bond manage to disarm the nuclear bomb a few seconds before it goes off rather than, as it were, a few seconds afterwards? Because a universe where that did not happen would be a dark and hostile place. Let there be goblin hordes, let there be terrible environmental threats, let there be giant mutated slugs if you really must, but let there also be hope. It may be a grim, thin hope, an Arthurian sword at sunset, but let us know that we do not live in vain. ~ Terry Pratchett
Arthurian Romances quotes by Terry Pratchett
This is not a romance. Romances are filled with valiant men and simpering damsels in distress. Romances have heroes worthy of the title. They slay dragons and climb towers to rescue beautiful princesses they immediately marry and impregnate. Romances end with a happily ever after. This is not a romance. This is a love story. ~ C.J. Roberts
Arthurian Romances quotes by C.J. Roberts
A great error is more easily propagated than a great truth, because it is easier to believe, than to reason, and because people prefer the marvels of romances to the simplicity of history. ~ Charles-Francois Dupuis
Arthurian Romances quotes by Charles-Francois Dupuis
There are well known Arthurian figures in the book, and some not so well known. Mabon plays a pivotal role in the tale as the Motherless Child who helps Rhowbyn, the narrator of the tale, to find and reconcile with his missing parent. Th
ere is a game of riddles in which Mabon and Rhowbyn engage that is both an homage to Tolkien and a nod of acknowledgement to events from 'The Mabinogion' and specifically the tale of Culwch and Olwen ~ Virginia Chandler
Arthurian Romances quotes by Virginia Chandler
All romances end in tragedy. One of the key people in a romance becomes a monster sooner or later. ~ David Cronenberg
Arthurian Romances quotes by David Cronenberg
Pedagogical romances leave the mentor disgruntled, the pupil confused. ~ Mason Cooley
Arthurian Romances quotes by Mason Cooley
Romance novels are all about desire and happily-ever-after, but happily-ever-after doesn't come from desire - at least not the kind portrayed in pulp romances. Real love is not to desire a person but to desire their happiness - sometimes even at the expense of our own happiness. Real love is to expand our own capacity for tolerance and caring, to actively seek another's well-being. All else is simply a charade of self-interest. ~ Richard Paul Evans
Arthurian Romances quotes by Richard Paul Evans
Myrddin', I said gently, 'what is she to you?'
His head whipped round and he glared at me. His mouth was a grimace of revulsion, and his eyes were hard, bright points of pain. 'She is my death ~ Stephen R. Lawhead
Arthurian Romances quotes by Stephen R. Lawhead
The romances between strangers are somewhere between inaccessible and incomprehensible to other people... ~ Lionel Shriver
Arthurian Romances quotes by Lionel Shriver
Friendship is a sacred thing and I do not extend the word lightly. I've had long-term romances in my life but few genuine friendships. I am exceedingly picky about who I let in my inner circle and because of that I have a few friends and many acquaintances. ~ Donna Lynn Hope
Arthurian Romances quotes by Donna Lynn Hope
When I was in high school, I started writing a serial novel, longhand, set in the Arthurian mythos, and influenced not incidentally by Marion Zimmer Bradley's 'The Mists of Avalon.' ~ Greg Rucka
Arthurian Romances quotes by Greg Rucka
Fiction was the only way I stayed sane. But I didn't read romances or fairy tales. Nope. I looked for the gritty, the perverse. The dark. Because those kinds of stories gave me hope that there were far worse things in life than what I was dealing with. ~ Stevie J. Cole
Arthurian Romances quotes by Stevie J. Cole
Family romances are the only ones that never turn out happily. ~ Mason Cooley
Arthurian Romances quotes by Mason Cooley
I am very pleased you like my stories. They are studies in prose, put for Romance's sake into fanciful form: meant partly for children, and partly for those who have kept the childlike faculties of wonder and joy, and who find simplicity in a subtle strangeness. ~ Oscar Wilde
Arthurian Romances quotes by Oscar Wilde
All romances end at marriage. ~ Thomas Hardy

Once I discovered Robin Hood and the medieval poem "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight," I realized that I felt a very deep calling to the Wild forest, the deep forest, the Wood that holds the Deep Mysteries and where the Wild Hunt is run.... ~ Virginia Chandler
