Dad was so proud of them, I wore the horrible things to school every day and took them off the moment I got inside. Then I walked around squinting. I was so relieved when a wave knocked the goggles off our zode into the water, and I begged Mariah not to find them for me.:

Dai is grinning at me. We are packed in so tightly, I realize our shoulders and arms are touching.

While I've been talking with Mariah, Dai has unfolded himself from our hiding spot. Now he floats directly in front of it, refusing to move out of my way until I meet his gaze.
His eyes are serious when I finally look at him. :Nere, just for the record, I don't think you are an idiot, and Lena will never be my type.:

Nere, there's a chance I will see you again," Cam says, his dark eyes intent. "If you ever need help, get word to me through the smugglers. I'll come."
I can only nod, afraid to trust my voice. I must look miserable, though, because moments later, he hugs me. I bury my face in his shoulder, his arms tighten around me, and finally I feel safe.
"No matter what happens, I'll always love you," he whispers in my ear. I close my eyes. Do I love him back? I just know Cam is more important to me than any friend I've ever had. I open my eyes and raise my face to him, and then he kisses me. I realize I've been waiting forever for this. Cam's lips are soft and he smells like salt water and fresh sea air. I wrap my arms around his neck and kiss him back.

After my dad leaves, I look over and realize Tobin's eyes are open, and he's watching me.
:Hey over there.: I smile at him.
:Hey yourself. Getting claustrophobic in here yet?:
:Nah, not really. I had a friend who helped me face my phobia, and I think it's a lot better now. In the end, all he got for his trouble was some really nasty sea wasp stings.:
:I think he got more than that.: Tobin sends me a quizzical smile, and I blush when I think how he helped me in our tiny prison. :That's good news, though, about your claustrophobia being better.: He closes his eyes. :I don't want to have to hum that many lullabies to you ever again.:
