Even a bad review is still a review. It means someone cared enough to take the time to say: Hey, this sucks. Don't bother. Buy a DVD instead ... Yes, someone cared. And isn't that what every writer dreams of? ... So, how did I deal with bad reviews? How else? I cry. I get mad. I pretend not to care. Then I pour myself a glass of wine and call a friend to complain. ~ C.W. Gortner
Writer Unboxed quotes by C.W. Gortner
A literary agent is nothing but a cheap salesman (or woman); while a writer is a cheap salesman (or woman) who also has to actually write the books. ~ John Hodgman
Writer Unboxed quotes by John Hodgman
This is a stamina game, so don't despair if you run down a blind alley and have to start over, or if you get another rejection letter. Every successful writer has gone through that, but they kept writing and didn't quit until they made it happen. ~ Tim Maleeny
Writer Unboxed quotes by Tim Maleeny
And as a writer, one of the things that I've always been interested in doing is actually invading your comfort space. Because that's what we're supposed to do. Get under your skin, and make you react. ~ Stephen King
Writer Unboxed quotes by Stephen King
The founding father of Albanian literature is the nineteenth-century writer Naim Frasheri. Without having the greatness of Dante or Shakespeare, he is nonetheless the founder, the emblematic character. He wrote long epic poems, as well as lyrical poetry, to awaken the national consciousness of Albania. ~ Ismail Kadare
Writer Unboxed quotes by Ismail Kadare
Anyone can write one book: even politicians do it. Starting a second book reveals an intention to be a professional writer. ~ Len Deighton
Writer Unboxed quotes by Len Deighton
Being a writer is determined more by writing than by having written. ~ Mokokoma Mokhonoana
Writer Unboxed quotes by Mokokoma Mokhonoana
She is a writer, what the fuck do you expect from her other than passion, truth and goddam soul? ~ Nikki Rowe
Writer Unboxed quotes by Nikki Rowe
For me, self-esteem-building and confidence-building is the foundation for anything that we do, whether you want to be a writer, a painter, or a entrepreneur. ~ Hill Harper
Writer Unboxed quotes by Hill Harper
The writer of 'The Red Road,' Aaron Guzikowski, deserves the credit. The fact that the dialogue is so understated is what makes this show so appealing, especially as an actor. ~ Martin Henderson
Writer Unboxed quotes by Martin Henderson
Perhaps no terms have been so injurious to the profession of the novelist as those two words, hero and heroine. In spite of the latitude which is allowed to the writer in putting his own interpretation upon these words, something heroic is still expected; whereas, if he attempt to paint from Nature, how little that is heroic
should he describe! ~ Anthony Trollope
Writer Unboxed quotes by Anthony Trollope
A writer has a difficult fate, but a Jewish writer has an especially difficult fate. His soul is torn; he lives on two streets with three languages. It is a misfortune to live on this sort of 'border,' and that is what I have experienced. ~ S. Ansky
Writer Unboxed quotes by S. Ansky
In every society the artist or writer remains an outsider ... ~ Simone De Beauvoir
Writer Unboxed quotes by Simone De Beauvoir
Limited points of view let the writer dispense - and the reader gather - information from various corners of the story. It all becomes a kind of dance, with the writer guiding the reader through the various twists and turns. The challenge is keeping readers in step, while still managing to surprise. ~ Jonathan Evison
Writer Unboxed quotes by Jonathan Evison
One of the dumbest things you were ever taught was to write what you know. Because what you know is usually dull. Remember when you first wanted to be a writer? Eight or ten years old, reading about thin-lipped heroes flying over mysterious viny jungles toward untold wonders? That's what you wanted to write about, about what you didn't know. So. What mysterious time and place don't we know?
[Remember This: Write What You Don't Know (New York Times Book Review, December 31, 1989)] ~ Ken Kesey
Writer Unboxed quotes by Ken Kesey
You can have a dark heart and be a writer, but you can't have a black one.. ~ John Geddes
Writer Unboxed quotes by John Geddes
A common question asked of writers is "When did you decide to become a writer?" The answer, of course, is that we didn't decide anything. It was decided for us. I firmly believe that mythical godmothers make appearances at our cradles, and bestow their gifts. The godmother who might have blessed me with a singing voice did not show up; the goddess of dance was nowhere in sight; the chef-to-the-angels was otherwise engaged. Only one made the journey to my cradle, and she whispered, "You will be a storyteller." ~ Mary Higgins Clark
Writer Unboxed quotes by Mary Higgins Clark
Milos Forman is a great director, Jim Brooks is a wonderful writer and director. ~ Twyla Tharp
Writer Unboxed quotes by Twyla Tharp
If I can make a living as a writer, I can do anything. ~ Richard LaGravenese
Writer Unboxed quotes by Richard LaGravenese
If you are not a writer, you will not understand the difficulties of writing. If you are not a writer, you will not know the fears and hopes of the writers you teach. ~ Mem Fox
Writer Unboxed quotes by Mem Fox
No theoretician, no writer on art, however interesting he or she might be, could be as interesting as Picasso. A good writer on art may give you an insight to Picasso, but, after all, Picasso was there first. ~ David Hockney
Writer Unboxed quotes by David Hockney
The children's writer not only makes a satisfactory connection between [the writer's] present maturity and his past childhood, he also does the same for his child-characters in reverse - makes the connection between their present childhood and their future maturity. That their maturity is never visibly achieved makes no difference; the promise of it is there. ~ Philippa Pearce
Writer Unboxed quotes by Philippa Pearce
Several Nations from the United States and Canada are embodied in this collection. Even so, no individual writer attempts to speak for his or her entire Nation, only from personal experiences dealing with non-Indians as well as Indians. Sadly, for whatever reasons, some of our worst enemies are on occasion our own people. The ~ MariJo Moore
Writer Unboxed quotes by MariJo Moore
I think it should be done over, Buddy. …Please make peace with your wit. It's not going to go away, Buddy. To dump it on your own advice would be as bad and unnatural as dumping your adjectives and your adverbs because Prof. B. wants you to. What does he know about it? What do you really know about your own wit?

I've been sitting here tearing up notes to you. I keep starting to say things like 'This one is wonderfully constructed,' and 'The conversation between the two cops is terrific.' So I'm hedging. I'm not sure why. I started to get a little nervous right after you began to read. It sounded like the beginning of something your arch-enemy Bob B. calls a rattling good story. Don't you think he would call this a step in the right direction? Doesn't that worry you? Even what is funny about the woman on the back of the truck doesn't sound like something you think is funny. It sounds much more like something that you think is universally considered funny. I feel gypped. Does that make you mad? You can say our relatedness spoils my judgement. It worries me enough. But I'm also just a reader. Are you a writer or just a writer of rattling good stories. I mind getting a rattling good story from you. ~ J.D. Salinger
Writer Unboxed quotes by J.D. Salinger
If you've got writer's block, you aren't empty - maybe it's just like Twitter - overwhelmed, and loading seems to be taking a while ... ~ John Geddes
Writer Unboxed quotes by John Geddes
I have learned that feeling empty sometimes is okay. I've got to refill myself with something at some point. Art, love, solitude, random acts of kindness. I really don't know, but that's what makes being whole again so exciting. ~ Juansen Dizon
Writer Unboxed quotes by Juansen Dizon
I don't think I've ever had a mentor. The closest thing is my friend Christopher Fowler, another writer. Chris kept me sane for a long time before I made it. ~ Joanne Harris
Writer Unboxed quotes by Joanne Harris
I'm often dismayed by the sludge I see appearing on my screen if I approach writing as a task--the day's work--and not with some enjoyment. ~ William Zinsser
Writer Unboxed quotes by William Zinsser
It's not in the book or in the writer that readers discern the truth of what they read; they see it in themselves, if the light of truth has penetrated their minds. ~ Augustine Of Hippo
Writer Unboxed quotes by Augustine Of Hippo
Real men do not work for fame. That is what I think. Popularity is just a piece of crap. I prefer a private life. ~ Aishah Madadiy
Writer Unboxed quotes by Aishah Madadiy
I never wanted to be a writer. I wanted to be a book illustrator. I used to hurry home from school and draw. ~ Natalie Babbitt
Writer Unboxed quotes by Natalie Babbitt
Some relationships are like glass its better to leave them broken than to hurt yourself trying to put the pieces back together again.
When you start reading the Bunna Man, most of my readers hate Dre and then they realize that Dre doesn't really have any power. The only power he has is the one Saf gave him. What happens now is that by you reach the middle of the story, your anger turns from Dre to Saf cause you realize that Saf is the catalyst behind her own misery. If she'd leave Dre alone. Her suffering would end ~ Crystal Evans
Writer Unboxed quotes by Crystal Evans
I'm working on a number of different things. I'm working on a couple of TV things and I'm working on a couple of film things too, and they're all very early stages. One of them I'm writing myself, one of them I'm writing with somebody else, and one of them I'm supervising a writer, and they're all sort of coming up at the same time and it'll be interesting to see which one kind of reveals itself first and jumps ahead. ~ Neil Burger
Writer Unboxed quotes by Neil Burger
I believed God had wired me as a writer for a purpose, and I was squandering that purpose. I finally repented of doing things my way and told God that, in the future, I would only write books that glorified Him. That meant I had to buy back some of my contracts. ~ Terri Blackstock
Writer Unboxed quotes by Terri Blackstock
When a writer puts words on paper, it is an intimate act. The reader hears your words in his voice and he becomes the bones of your story. The reader is the foundation that you wrap in muscle and sinew. You build the hero on the reader's delicate frame until your story is his story. Your sorrow is his; your joy is a communion you both celebrate. ~ N.M. Kelby
Writer Unboxed quotes by N.M. Kelby
When I went in, my editor said, 'I hope you don't think you're a writer.' And I said, 'I hope you don't think I'm a journalist.' And, uh, turned out we were both right. ~ Julia Cameron
Writer Unboxed quotes by Julia Cameron
A young musician plays scales in his room and only bores his family. A beginning writer, on the other hand, sometimes has the misfortune of getting into print. ~ Marguerite Yourcenar
Writer Unboxed quotes by Marguerite Yourcenar
Finally, Europe's post-war history is a story shadowed by silences; by absence. The continent of Europe was once an intricate, interwoven tapestry of overlapping languages, religions, communities and nations. Many of its cities - particularly the smaller ones at the intersection of old and new imperial boundaries, such as Trieste, Sarajevo, Salonika, Cernovitz, Odessa or Vilna - were truly multicultural societies avant le mot, where Catholics, Orthodox, Muslims, Jews and others lived in familiar juxtaposition. We should not idealise this old Europe. What the Polish writer Tadeusz Borowski called 'the incredible, almost comical melting-pot of peoples and nationalities sizzling dangerously in the very heart of Europe' was periodically rent with riots, massacres and pogroms - but it was real, and it survived into living memory.
Between 1914 and 1945, however, that Europe was smashed into the dust. The tidier Europe that emerged, blinking, into the second half of the twentieth century had fewer loose ends. Thanks to war, occupation, boundary adjustments, expulsions and genocide, almost everybody now lived in their own country, among their own people. For forty years after World War Two Europeans in both halves of Europe lived in hermetic national enclaves where surviving religious or ethnic minorities the Jews in France, for example - represented a tiny percentage of the population at large and were thoroughly integrated into its cultural and political mainstream. Only Yugos ~ Tony Judt
Writer Unboxed quotes by Tony Judt
I'm a good collaborative writer. I can usually come in and add a couple lines to something, and add a riff or a B-section, or a bridge that will tie things together. I can do stuff like that. But to write a whole song, I don't have the patience for that, I guess. ~ James Young
Writer Unboxed quotes by James Young
Memorizing the work of others definitely made me a better writer. ~ James Arthur
Writer Unboxed quotes by James Arthur
Chaos is nothing more than beauty about to dance. ~ A.D. Posey
Writer Unboxed quotes by A.D. Posey

Raven Magwood is a very talented person and an extremely gifted writer. ~ Danny Ford
Writer Unboxed quotes by Danny Ford
The things that make you a functional citizen in society - manners, discretion, cordiality - don't necessarily make you a good writer. Writing needs raw truth, wants your suffering and darkness on the table, revels in a cutting mind that takes no prisoners ... ~ Natalie Goldberg
