The third group called to silence is women. This group is not composed of all women all the time but rather of specific women who were asking questions and speaking in the service. The larger context of these verses demands that we understand these questioning women to be a disruption of the peace and order of the service. This is the reason Paul wrote that 'women should keep silent in the churches' (v. 34). Paul's concern is not just with women (for men too are called to be silent in church); his broader concern is with silence, peace, and order in the worship assembly. This perspective allows us rightly to understand the rest of this chapter, 14:34-40. Paul next tells these specific women to 'be in submission.' We tend to think of this as submission to MEN, but the larger context makes this improbable. Our patriarchal and man-centered culture over the millennia has distorted the meaning of this command to submit. Rather than commanding submission to men, the apostle is commanding SUBMISSION TO THE ORDER OF THE WORSHIP SERVICE, that is, submission to the Holy Spirit. This reading helps us understand the next phrase: 'even as the law says.' Normally LAW in Paul refers to the Old Testament, but it can also have a wider meaning. Nowhere in the Old Testament are women called to be silent, nor are they called to submit to their husbands. Yet there is excellent evidence for biblical and broadly Jewish concern for SILENCE IN WORSHIP before God or the Word of God or while learning f ~ Alan G. Padgett
Worship Assembly quotes by Alan G. Padgett
Ungit tells me things. I hear of terrible doings in this land, mortals aping the gods and stealing the worship due ~ C.S. Lewis
Worship Assembly quotes by C.S. Lewis
When we all can worship from our own kind of pew, then we shall be free. ~ Garth Brooks
Worship Assembly quotes by Garth Brooks
Children, meditation is not just sitting with our eyes closed. We should take every action as worship. We should be able to experience His presence everywhere. ~ Mata Amritanandamayi
Worship Assembly quotes by Mata Amritanandamayi
For a while, I decided to worship God. It was a God I arrived at through a method of logical deduction. If there is a God, what would he be like? I asked. He would be a real person in my life, I reasoned, adhering to a literally anthropomorphic view of the sacred. He would be beautiful and I would desire him. Since a friend of mine named Trevor had all those attributes, I concluded that Trev was God. Having settled on him, I then further deduced God's other characteristics from Trevor's behaviour. He was narcissistic, perplexed, rather dispassionate, flawed in various ways, etc. So was God. At night I prayed to him by name. My entreaties seemed about as effective as other people's prayers to their Gods. And with Trevor there was the added advantage that if my prayers failed to reach him, I could always phone. ~ Stan Persky
Worship Assembly quotes by Stan Persky
But a broader - more scriptural - view of worship is about serving the poor, righting injustice, caring for those in need. When teenagers - whether they're already followers of Jesus or not - experience this kind of worship-in-action, they have an enormous opportunity to have a tangible experience of God in their lives. ~ Mark Oestreicher
Worship Assembly quotes by Mark Oestreicher
It is the Mass the matters. ~ Augustine Birrell
Worship Assembly quotes by Augustine Birrell
When our minds are purified through karma (selfless action) and made single-pointed through up-asana (worship), we cannot remain satisfied with the small achievements in worldly life. ~ Tejomayananda
Worship Assembly quotes by Tejomayananda
When Pat gave her 'criminal-hero' Tom Ripley a charmed and parentless life, a wealthy, socially poised Alter Ego (Dickie Greenleaf), and a guilt-free modus operandi (after he kills Dickie, Tom murders only when necessary), she was doing just what her fellow comic book artists were doing with their Superheroes: allowing her fictional character to finesse situations she herself could only approach in wish fulfillment. And when she reimagined her own psychological split in Ripley's character - endowing him with both her weakest traits (paralyzing self-consciousness and hero-worship) and her wildest dreams (murder and money) - she was turning the material of the 'comic book' upside down and making it into something very like a 'tragic book.' 'It is always so easy for me to see the world upside down,' Pat wrote in her diary– and everywhere else. ~ Joan Schenkar
Worship Assembly quotes by Joan Schenkar
Meanwhile, Quakers used outrageous behavior to draw more attention to their beliefs and provoke a response. A Quaker man walked into a Boston church holding a bottle in each hand, then smashed them to the floor; he shouted, "Thus will the Lord break all to pieces!" A Quaker woman stripped herself naked and paraded through the Newbury church during worship. Another Quaker woman paraded nude through the streets of Boston. ~ John M Barry
Worship Assembly quotes by John M Barry
Worship is about something we do. It involves sacrifice. But at the heart of the gospel is this truth, we are called and chosen by God to join in with the dance of the trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. ~ Tim Hughes
Worship Assembly quotes by Tim Hughes
On August 26 the Assembly responded by conferring French citizenship upon Joseph Priestley, Jeremy Bentham, William Wilberforce, Anacharsis Cloots, Johann Pestalozzi, Thaddeus Kosciusko, Friedrich Schiller, George Washington, Thomas Paine, James Madison, and Alexander Hamilton. ~ Will Durant
Worship Assembly quotes by Will Durant
Worship is not just what we do with our lips; it is what we do with our lives. ~ Joel Balin
Worship Assembly quotes by Joel Balin
Why do all Hindu boys worship their mother? Because their religion tells them to worship the cow. ~ Twinkle Khanna
Worship Assembly quotes by Twinkle Khanna
In the years since then, those four freedoms - freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear - have stood as a summary of our aspirations for the American Republic and for the world. ~ Lyndon B. Johnson
Worship Assembly quotes by Lyndon B. Johnson
Either you're lying again or you're as stupid as you look. You ditch me first year for him when you were a girl. You ditch me second year for him when you were a boy. You lie and cheat and steal for him while he treats you like crap, and I help you and care for you and worship you like a queen while you treat me like crap! What does that guy have that I don't? What makes him so lovable and me so unworthy? Know how many times I've asked myself that question, Sophie? How many times I've studied him like a book or sat in the dark picturing every last shred of him, trying to understand why he's more of a person than me? Or why the moment he's gone, you take a ring from the School Master - or Raphael or Michelangelo or Donatello or whatever you want to call him to make yourself feel better - just because he looks like you want him to look and says what you want to hear? When you could have had someone who's honest and kind and real? ~ Soman Chainani
Worship Assembly quotes by Soman Chainani
The worship of reason is arrogance and betrays a lack of intelligence. The rejection of reason is cowardice and betrays a lack of faith. ~ Abraham Joshua Heschel
Worship Assembly quotes by Abraham Joshua Heschel
She would be one of those who kneel to their own shadows till feet grow on their knees; then go down on their hands till their hands grow into feet; then lay their faces on the ground till they grow into snouts; when at last they are a hideous sort of lizards, each of which believes himself the best, wisest, and loveliest being in the world, yea, the very centre of the universe. And so they run about for ever looking for their own shadows that they may worship them, and miserable because they cannot find them, being themselves too near the ground to have any shadows; and what becomes of them at last, there is but one who knows. ~ George MacDonald
Worship Assembly quotes by George MacDonald
David is called a man after God's heart. This can be a little confusing when you get into his story, because he's guilty of adultery and murder and cover-up. He's a train wreck as a husband, and he's worse as a dad. But his heart belongs to God. His whole life is immersed in the presence and story of God. What lights him up is to serve God and love God, and when he mess up - and he does - he repents and wants to get right with God again. ~ John Ortberg
Worship Assembly quotes by John Ortberg
All of our faith and practice arise out of the drama of Scripture, the "big story" that traces the plot of history from creation to consummation, with Christ as its Alpha and Omega, beginning and end. And out of the throbbing verbs of this unfolding drama God reveals stable nouns - doctrines. From what God does in history we are taught certain things about who he is and what it means to be created in his image, fallen, and redeemed, renewed, and glorified in union with Christ. As the Father creates his church, in his Son and by his Spirit, we come to realize what this covenant community is and what it means to belong to it; what kind of future is promised to us in Christ, and how we are to live here and now in the light of it all. The drama and the doctrine provoke us to praise and worship - doxology - and together these three coordinates give us a new way of living in the world as disciples. ~ Michael S. Horton
Worship Assembly quotes by Michael S. Horton
All images and sensations, if idolatrously mistaken for Joy itself, soon honestly confessed themselves inadequate. All said, in a last resort, "It is not high. I am only a reminder. Look! Look! What do I remind you of?" CS Lewis ~ Philip Zaleski
Worship Assembly quotes by Philip Zaleski
She discovered what others know only too well in a cynical way, that people prefer to believe in and worship a god who is remote rather than live out the godlike nature which is their inherent being. ~ Henry Miller
Worship Assembly quotes by Henry Miller
What whip lashed them to their knees in shame and submission? The worship of the word We. ~ Ayn Rand
Worship Assembly quotes by Ayn Rand
Yes, I think especially the Pentecostal churches, you know, that there's been such a growth in Pentecostalism. And it's a rejection of the much more dour and barren kind of Calvinist worship and also, the very formal Catholic forms of worship. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Worship Assembly quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
I let God be the judge and I believe that we worship a just and fair God who won't punish innocent people unnecessarily. ~ Jimmy Carter
Worship Assembly quotes by Jimmy Carter
I think that when you consider the beauty of the world and you wonder how it came to be what it is, you are naturally overwhelmed with a feeling of awe, a feeling of admiration and you almost feel a desire to worship something. I feel this, I recognise that other scientists such as Carl Sagan feel this, Einstein felt it. We, all of us, share a kind of religious reverence for the beauties of the universe, for the complexity of life. For the sheer magnitude of the cosmos, the sheer magnitude of geological time. And it's tempting to translate that feeling of awe and worship into a desire to worship some particular thing, a person, an agent. You want to attribute it to a maker, to a creator. What science has now achieved is an emancipation from that impulse to attribute these things to a creator.
God Delusion debate Professor Richard Dawkins vs John Lennox ~ Richard Dawkins
Worship Assembly quotes by Richard Dawkins
It is impossible to worship God and remain unchanged ~ Henry Blackaby
Worship Assembly quotes by Henry Blackaby
This, child, is our worship. To live and survive and play to God from the depths of our souls. This is the call that binds us. When we worship in the good times, it brings God joy. But worship in the midst of agony?" Her tongue clicked against the roof of her mouth and she shook her head. It was an action befitting the wisdom of the words she'd chosen. "That is authentic adoration of our Creator. An orchestra will worship together, as one body. As one song. A family must do no less. ~ Kristy Cambron
Worship Assembly quotes by Kristy Cambron
If you will not worship God seven days a week," said A. W. Tozer, "you do not worship Him on one day a week. ~ Donald S. Whitney
Worship Assembly quotes by Donald S. Whitney
In his trip to Bethlehem Mark Twain had reported that all sects of Christians, except Protestants, had chapels under the roof of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. However, he also observed that one group dared not trespass on the other's territory, proving beyond doubt, he noted, that even the grave of the Savior couldn't inspire peaceful worship among different beliefs. ~ David Baldacci
Worship Assembly quotes by David Baldacci
Faith is the road, but communion with Jesus is the well from which the pilgrim drinks. ~ Charles Haddon Spurgeon
Worship Assembly quotes by Charles Haddon Spurgeon
Conservatism is the worship of dead revolutions. ~ Clinton Rossiter
Worship Assembly quotes by Clinton Rossiter
in an individual sense, we are to be continual worshipers and praisers. Worship and praise is not something we decide to do for a few minutes a day or once a week, but it is who we are. Our attitude should always be that of a worshiper. ~ Ronald Sawka
Worship Assembly quotes by Ronald Sawka
I don't know how they do it. I don't know how anybody
does it, waking up every morning and eating and moving
from the bus to the assembly line, where the teacherbots
inject us with Subject A and Subject B, and passing
every test they give us. Our parents provide the list of
ingredients and remind us to make healthy choices: one
sport, two clubs, one artistic goal, community service, no
grades below a B, because really, nobody's average, not
around here. It's a dance with complicated footwork and
a changing tempo.
I'm the girl who trips on the dance floor and can't find
her way to the exit. All eyes on me. ~ Laurie Halse Anderson
Worship Assembly quotes by Laurie Halse Anderson
People ask, "Have you ever seen the gods you worship? How can you be sure they exist?" Answers: i. Just look around you. ii. I've never seen my soul either. And yet I revere it. That's how I know the gods exist and why I revere them - from having felt their power, over and over. ~ Marcus Aurelius
Worship Assembly quotes by Marcus Aurelius
Thou rising Sun! thou blue rejoicing Sky! Yea! every thing that is and will be free! Bear witness for me, whereso'er ye be, With what deep worship I have still adored The spirit of divinest Liberty. ~ Samuel Taylor Coleridge
Worship Assembly quotes by Samuel Taylor Coleridge
It is practically a matter of life or death for a True Cock Worshiper to taste pre-cum. ~ Lordess Demonica
Worship Assembly quotes by Lordess Demonica
Other people could stand up and speak to an assembly, apparently, without that dreadful feeling of pressure of personality; could say what they would as though they were speaking to only one person ~ William Golding
Worship Assembly quotes by William Golding
Worship is accomplished with the life as well as with the words and attitudes of people. Changed and transformed lives testify to the character and supernatural power of the God of heaven. Closeness to Him produces changes in character and holiness. ~ Max Anders
Worship Assembly quotes by Max Anders
God, the object of our worship, also becomes the inspiration of that worship. He has imparted His own Spirit into our hearts to energize that worship. All that is due Him comes from Him. ~ Judson Cornwall
Worship Assembly quotes by Judson Cornwall
Mr. Wilson, writing long before he became President, also knew how it came about that this Constitution, which the rich men of the eighteenth century created for the benefit of themselves and their class, was eventually palmed off as a great instrument for popular rule. Concerted, energetic means were taken by the rich men of the day to change public opinion, which, from the beginning, had been hostile to the Constitution. As the result of such efforts, said Mr. Wilson, 1 criticism of the Constitution " soon gave place to an undiscriminating and almost blind worship of its principles ~ Anonymous
Worship Assembly quotes by Anonymous
You see my kind of loyalty was loyalty to one's country, not to its institutions or its officeholders. The country is the real thing, the substantial thing, the eternal thing; it is the thing to watch over, and care for, and be loyal to; institutions are extraneous, they are its mere clothing, and clothing can wear out, become ragged, cease to be comfortable, cease to protect the body from winter, disease and death. To be loyal to rags, to shout for rags, to worship rags, to die for rags
that is loyalty of unreason, it is pure animal. ~ Mark Twain
Worship Assembly quotes by Mark Twain
Cricket to us was more than play,
It was a worship in the summer sun. ~ Edmund Blunden
Worship Assembly quotes by Edmund Blunden
What do sad people have in common? It seems they have all built a shrine to the past and often go there and do a strange wail and worship. What is the beginning of Happiness? It is to stop being so religious like that. ~ Hafez
