As [William] Valentiner noted in his uncompleted memoirs Remembering Artists, [Diego] Rivera's [Detroit Industry] murals rooted the Detroit Institute of Arts to the many-faceted jewel of its central court because of the harmonious, fertile relationship between "the industrialist" and "the artist." Rivera remarked to Valentiner how especially struck he was that "Edsel had none of the characteristics of the exploiting capitalist, that he had the simplicity and directness of a workman in his won factories and was like one of the best of them." Their relationship was like the murals themselves, a superb expression of pluralism, toleration, and empathy for the other, and of a cosmopolitan sense of all the Americas, not just of the United States of America or Detroit alone. ~ John Dean
William Valentiner quotes by John Dean
Poetry is that art which selects and arranges the symbols of thought in such a manner as to excite the imagination the most powerfully and delightfully. ~ William C. Bryant
William Valentiner quotes by William C. Bryant
There is nothing one fears more or is more ashamed of than not being oneself. Yet few people realize even an approximation of their true potential. Most people must live with varying degrees of the shame and fear of not being fully in control of themselves. ~ William S. Burroughs
William Valentiner quotes by William S. Burroughs
No patriotism is genuine that is merely partisan or provincial. ~ William Rainey Harper
William Valentiner quotes by William Rainey Harper
His face with lined with suffering in which his eyes did not participate. ~ William S. Burroughs
William Valentiner quotes by William S. Burroughs
I see no reason why the artistic world can't absolutely merge with Madison Avenue. Pop art is a move in that direction. Why can't we have advertisements with beautiful words and beautiful images? ~ William S. Burroughs
William Valentiner quotes by William S. Burroughs
Lack of accomplishment is one thing; deceit is quite another. Everyone who has followed her career knows that Hillary is dishonest to the core, a "congenital liar" as columnist William Safire once put it. The writer Christopher Hitchens titled his book about the Clintons No One Left to Lie To. Even Hollywood mogul David Geffen, an avid progressive, said a few years ago of the Clintons, "Everybody in politics lies but they do it with such ease, it's troubling."3 ~ Dinesh D'Souza
William Valentiner quotes by Dinesh D'Souza
War is Hell you can NOT refine it! ~ William Tecumseh Sherman
William Valentiner quotes by William Tecumseh Sherman
But Leon wasn't due any disability. Wasn't, their mother said, like he could claim to have caught the dumbfuck there. Not ~ William Gibson
William Valentiner quotes by William Gibson
Bluster, sputter, question, cavil; but be sure your argument be intricate enough to confound the court. ~ William Wycherley
William Valentiner quotes by William Wycherley
Among the New Hollanders whom we were thus engaged with, there was one who by his appearance and carriage, as well in the morning as this afternoon, seemed to be the chief of them, and a kind of prince or captain among them. ~ William Dampier
William Valentiner quotes by William Dampier
And must we be divided? Must we part?"
"Ay, hand from hand, my love, and heart from heart. ~ William Shakespeare
William Valentiner quotes by William Shakespeare
If there is one number to which the rights of millions will be happily sacrificed, it is the national GDP growth rate. ~ William Easterly
William Valentiner quotes by William Easterly
He is the greatest influence in the world today. There is ... a fifth Gospel being written - the work of Jesus Christ in the hearts and lives of men and nations. ~ William Griffith Thomas
William Valentiner quotes by William Griffith Thomas
Why, these men would destroy the Bible on evidence that would not convict a habitual criminal of a misdemeanor. They found a tooth in a sand pit in Nebraska with no other bones about it, and from that one tooth decided that it was the remains of the missing link. They have queer ideas about age too. They find a fossil and when they are asked how old it is they say they can't tell without knowing what rock it was in, and when they are asked how old the rock is they say they can't tell unless they know how old the fossil is. ~ William Jennings Bryan
William Valentiner quotes by William Jennings Bryan
The pain others give passes away in their later kindness, but that of our own blunders, especially when they hurt our vanity, never passes away ~ William Butler Yeats
William Valentiner quotes by William Butler Yeats
Even Tyler would be infected by this surprising outbreak of sadness, which he certainly would not have felt had he simply never happened to see Lily again. This taught him the vanity and egotism of grief, which so often compromises nothing except childish rebellion against the closing off of possibilities. ~ William T. Vollmann
William Valentiner quotes by William T. Vollmann
What, are there masques? Hear you me, Jessica:
Lock up my doors; and when you hear the drum
And the vile squealing of the wry-neck'd fife,
Clamber not you up to the casements then,
Nor thrust your head into the public street
To gaze on Christian fools with varnish'd faces,
But stop my house's ears, I mean my casements:
Let not the sound of shallow foppery enter
~ William Shakespeare
William Valentiner quotes by William Shakespeare
I have almost forgotten the taste of fears: The time has been, my senses would have cool'd to hear a night-shriek; and my fell of hair would at a dismal treatise rouse and stir as life were in't: I have supt full with horrors; Direness, familiar to my slaughterous thoughts, cannot once start me. ~ William Shakespeare
William Valentiner quotes by William Shakespeare
A beauty masked, like the sun in eclipse, gathers together more gazers than if it shined out. ~ William Wycherley
William Valentiner quotes by William Wycherley
In the world a man lives in his own age; in solitude in all ages. ~ William Mathews
William Valentiner quotes by William Mathews
Gliding spiderlike, rapidly, close behind Sharon, her body arched backward in a bow with her head almost touching her feet, was Regan, her tongue flicking quickly in and out of her mouth while she hissed sibilantly like a serpent. Sharon stopped then screamed as she felt Regan's tongue snaking out at her ankle. That day, everywhere Sharon went, Regan followed. ~ William Peter Blatty
William Valentiner quotes by William Peter Blatty
The market likes to lull you into the false security of high success rate techniques, which often lose disastrously in the long run. The general idea is that what works most of the time is nearly the opposite of what works in the long run. ~ William Eckhardt
William Valentiner quotes by William Eckhardt
Now it is the time of night,
Every one lets forth his sprite,
And we fairies, that do run,
From the presence of the sun,
Follow darkness like a dream. ~ William Shakespeare
William Valentiner quotes by William Shakespeare
Man often acquires just so much knowledge as to discover his ignorance, and attains so much experience as to regret his follies, and then dies. ~ William Benton Clulow
William Valentiner quotes by William Benton Clulow
It is also significant that the play opens with the objective presence of supernatural forces. The witches are not the figment of someone else's imagination because there is nobody else present to witness them. They are alone, and therefore they stand alone, utterly independent. We are in the real presence of evil, an evil that really exists whether we like it or not, an evil that is not merely the product of our fetid fetishes or our fevered imaginations. In its formal structure, therefore, Macbeth places us unequivocally in a supernatural cosmos, rendering implausible all materialistic interpretations of the play's intrinsic meaning. ~ William Shakespeare
William Valentiner quotes by William Shakespeare
His own government, suing him, that's not Chocolate Sundae! ~ William H. Gates, Sr.
William Valentiner quotes by William H. Gates, Sr.
Major General Leonard Wood

Leonard Wood was an army officer and physician, born October 9, 1860 in Winchester, New Hampshire. His first assignment was in 1886 at Fort Huachuca, Arizona where he fought in the last campaign against the fierce Apache warrior Geronimo. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for carrying dispatches 100 miles through hostile territory and was promoted to the rank of Captain, commanding a detachment of the 8th Infantry.

From 1887 to 1898, he served as a medical officer in a number of positions, the last of which was as the personal physician to President William McKinley. In 1898 at the beginning of the war with Spain, he was given command of the 1st Volunteer Cavalry. The regiment was soon to be known as the "Rough Riders." Wood lead his men on the famous charge up San Juan Hill and was given a field promotion to brigadier general.

In 1898 he was appointed the Military Governor of Santiago de Cuba. In 1920, as a retired Major General, Wood ran as the Republican candidate for the presidency of the United States, losing to Warren Harding. In 1921 following his defeat, General Wood accepted the post of Governor General of the Philippines. He held this position from 1921 to 1927, when he died of a brain tumor in Boston, on 7 August 1927, at 66 years of age after which he was buried, with full honors, in Arlington National Cemetery. ~ Hank Bracker
William Valentiner quotes by Hank Bracker
Then hate me when thou wilt; if ever, now;
Now, while the world is bent my deeds to cross,
Join with the spite of fortune, make me bow,
And do not drop in for an after-loss:
Ah, do not, when my heart hath 'scoped this sorrow,
Come in the rearward of a conquer'd woe;
Give not a windy night a rainy morrow,
To linger out a purposed overthrow.
If thou wilt leave me, do not leave me last,
When other petty griefs have done their spite
But in the onset come; so shall I taste
At first the very worst of fortune's might,
And other strains of woe, which now seem woe,
Compared with loss of thee will not seem so. ~ William Shakespeare
William Valentiner quotes by William Shakespeare
With mirth in funeral and with dirge in marriage. ~ William Shakespeare
William Valentiner quotes by William Shakespeare
It's hard to watch something you've done many years ago. ~ William Sanderson
William Valentiner quotes by William Sanderson
