All travelers to wild places will have felt some version of this, a brief blazing perception of the world's disinterest. In small measures it exhilarates. But in full form it annihilates. ~ Robert Macfarlane
Wild Places quotes by Robert Macfarlane
When I was a child in Scotland, I was fond of everything that was wild, and all my life I've been growing fonder and fonder of wild places and wild creatures. Fortunately, around my native town of Dunbar, by the stormy North Sea, there was no lack of wildness... ~ John Muir
Wild Places quotes by John Muir
Anyone who lives in a city will know the feeling of having been there too long. The gorge-vision that the streets imprint on us, the sense of blockage, the longing for surfaces other than glass, brick, concrete and tarmac ... I have lived in Cambridge on and off for a decade, and I imagine I will continue to do so for years to come. And for as long as I stay here, I know I will have to also get to the wild places. ~ Robert Macfarlane
Wild Places quotes by Robert Macfarlane
The stars are out,' Zoe said.
She was right. There were millions of them, with no city lights to ruin turn the sky orange.
'Amazing,' Bianca said. 'I've never actually seen the Milky Way.'
'This is nothing,' Zoe said. 'In the old days, there were more. Whole constellations have disappeared because of human light pollution.'
'You talk like you're not human,' I said.
Zoe raised an eyebrow. I am a Hunter. I care what happens to the wild places of the world. Can the same be said for thee?'
'For you,' Thalia corrected. 'Not thee.'
'But you use you for the beginning of a sentence.'
'And for the end,' Thalia said. 'No thou. No thee. Just you.'
Zoe threw up her hands in exasperation. 'I hate this language. It changes too often! ~ Rick Riordan
Wild Places quotes by Rick Riordan
Wild animals, like wild places, are invaluable to us precisely because they are not us. They are uncompromisingly different. The paths they follow, the impulses that guide them, are of other orders. The seal's holding gaze, before it flukes to push another tunnel through the sea, the hare's run, the hawk's high gyres : such things are wild. Seeing them, you are made briefly aware of a world at work around and beside our own, a world operating in patterns and purposes that you do not share. These are creatures, you realise that live by voices inaudible to you. ~ Robert Macfarlane
Wild Places quotes by Robert Macfarlane
Do I smell like wild places, still?"
Sergei laughed softly and ruffled his hair. "I'd have to compare. And monitor that. Refine my assessment over the next years ... "
"Ranch has plenty of spare dung. I'll be sure to roll in it regularly." Teeth scraped his arm, nipped his skin gently.
"I always knew the Alliance was decadent. I intend to see just how decadent. ~ Rhi Etzweiler
Wild Places quotes by Rhi Etzweiler
The reason that I keep writing is that all my most powerful messages about the fates of wild places that I care about need to have words as well as images. ~ Galen Rowell
Wild Places quotes by Galen Rowell
Do you dare journey into the wild places of your heart? ~ John Mark Green
Wild Places quotes by John Mark Green
To save wildlife and wild places the traction has to come not from the regurgitation of bad-news data but from the poets, prophets, preachers, professors, and presidents who have always dared to inspire. ~ J. Drew Lanham
Wild Places quotes by J. Drew Lanham
He knew he needed to release her, but once he allowed his physical connection to drop away, he was uncertain if he'd ever have a chance to reconnect. Instinctively, he knew Azami was elusive, like water flowing through fingers, or the wind shifting in the trees. He needed a way to seal her to him.
"How does one court a woman in Japan? Do I need your brothers' permission?"
She blinked again. Shocked. A hint of uncertainty crept into her eyes. She frowned, and he bent his head to swallow her protest before she could utter it. Her mouth trembled beneath his, and then she opened to him, like a flower, luring him deeper. Her arms slid around his neck, her body pressing tightly against his. He tightened his fingers in her hair.
He was burning, through and through, from the inside out, a hot melting of bone and tissue. He hadn't known he was lonely or even looking for something. He'd been complete. He loved his life. He was a man with teammates he trusted implicitly. He lived in wild places of beauty he enjoyed. He hadn't considered there would be a woman who could ever fit with him, who would ever turn his insides soft and his body hard.
Feel the same way, Azami. He didn't lift his mouth, kissing her again and again because one he'd made the mistake, he was addicted and what was the use fighting it? Not when it felt so damn right.
Somewhere along the line, his kiss went from sheer aggression and command, to absolute tenderness. The emotion for her rose like ~ Christine Feehan
Wild Places quotes by Christine Feehan
At his words, a bolt of longing tore through her, for blue skies and deep snow, for wild places and for silence, for his fire-lit house in the fir-grove, for his hands in the darkness. ~ Katherine Arden
Wild Places quotes by Katherine Arden
I wanted to live spontaneously and to find myself in wild places, with wild people, and have wild times. ~ Sophia Amoruso
Wild Places quotes by Sophia Amoruso
It's very important that we keep these special, wild places. It defines the United States. Imagine our country without our national parks and our monuments. Here in California, imagine if you didn't have in Southern Cal the Channel Islands or the great Highway 1, Big Sur up to Point Reyes up to the Redwood country. ~ Douglas Brinkley
Wild Places quotes by Douglas Brinkley
Insulate yourself with friends and seek out wild places. ~ Doug Peacock
Wild Places quotes by Doug Peacock
All farms are much alike everywhere, and all wild places have their own beauty. ~ Jo Walton
Wild Places quotes by Jo Walton
Conservation is sometimes perceived as stopping everything cold, as holding whooping cranes in higher esteem than people. It is up to science to spread the understanding that the choice is not between wild places or people, it is between a rich or an impoverished existence for Man. ~ Thomas Lovejoy
Wild Places quotes by Thomas Lovejoy
You have a whole life in the outdoors, you realize you have a sense of responsibility to protect these wild places. ~ Yvon Chouinard
Wild Places quotes by Yvon Chouinard
The moment I took hold of the line, I felt the mighty tug of the wind coursing into my palm and wrist, and there I stayed, transfixed. The pwer in that topgallant sail suddenly awed me, and yet it was among the smaller sails on the mast. It was a mere speck on the ocean, catching an infinitesimal fraction of all the howling winds that crossed the wide seas. I literally could not move a muscle, trying in vain to absorb the magnitude of it.
And there was something else, as well. This wind was blowing me westward. I was hurtling into my own predestined future. With neither star nor compass, I knew the heading of this wind. It bore down on a lonely river crossing in one of the last wild places on Earth, where timber moaned in a gale, and frosty grass sparkled in the dawn, and beasts lumbered and thundered the valley. A sacred place protected by Comanches. ~ Mike Blakely
Wild Places quotes by Mike Blakely
I am passionate about making sure that we collectively and proactively preserve all of the world's most iconic coastal and oceanic wild places - those keystone ecosystems that are irreplaceable, breathtakingly beautiful refuges for fish and other marine wildlife. ~ Serge Dedina
Wild Places quotes by Serge Dedina
Bindi, Robert, and I would do our best to make sure that Steve's light wasn't hidden under a bushel. It would continue to sine as we worked together to protect all wildlife and all wild places. ~ Terri Irwin
Wild Places quotes by Terri Irwin
We don't have to go to wild places to find wildlife. A surprisingly wide range of species can be found in our sities and towns, from familiar animals like the raccoon to more exotic ones like the mountain lion. ~ Roger Tory Peterson
Wild Places quotes by Roger Tory Peterson
As one who has often felt this need, and who has found refreshment in wild places, I attest to the recreational value of wilderness. ~ George Aiken
Wild Places quotes by George Aiken
...One cannot help but consider the future- what will it be like when all the wild places of the earth have been taken over by civilization, and there is no more room for Indians, Pirates, and Wild Boys? ~ Christopher Daniel Mechling
Wild Places quotes by Christopher Daniel Mechling
But wasn't that progress too, that the elephants were killed off like the mastodon and giant rhino before them, like all other wildlife and wild places? 'We can't stop time,' MacAdam said. 'But you can change the way it goes,' Nehemiah insisted. ~ Mike Bond
Wild Places quotes by Mike Bond
We have a moral responsibility to save wild places like the arctic refuge for future generations, and that is why our country has remained committed to its protection for nearly 50 years. ~ Lois Capps
Wild Places quotes by Lois Capps
We cannot go on fiddling while the earth's wild places burn ... ~ David R. Brower
Wild Places quotes by David R. Brower
We are the Amazons" said Myrina."We are the killers of beasts and men. Wild ourselves, we inhabit the wild places. Freedom courses in our blood, and death whispers at the tip of our arrows. We fear nothing, fear runs from us. Try to stop us, and you will feel our rage. ~ Anne Fortier
Wild Places quotes by Anne Fortier
Most of the time in America, we're surrounded by oppressive inequality such that the wealthiest 1 percent collectively own substantially more than the bottom 90 percent. One escape from that is America's wild places. ~ Nicholas Kristof
Wild Places quotes by Nicholas Kristof
It has always been my understanding that truth and freedom can only exist in wild places. ~ Daniel J. Rice
Wild Places quotes by Daniel J. Rice
Deep down inside me a tiny voice was calling. At first scarcely audible, it persisted until I could no longer ignore it. It was the voice of the wild places, and I knew that it was now part of me forever. ~ Percy Harrison Fawcett
Wild Places quotes by Percy Harrison Fawcett
We enter solitude, in which also we lose loneliness ...
True solitude is found in the wild places, where one is without human obligation.
One's inner voices become audible. One feels the attraction of one's most intimate sources.
In consequence, one responds more clearly to other lives. The more coherent one becomes within oneself as a creature, the more fully one enters into the communion of all creatures. ~ Wendell Berry
Wild Places quotes by Wendell Berry
The mind that finds its way to wild places is the poet's; but the mind that never finds its way back is the lunatic's. ~ Gilbert K. Chesterton
Wild Places quotes by Gilbert K. Chesterton
All the love of the high, wild places, all the amazing joy in being alive sounded in his voice ~ Elyne Mitchell
Wild Places quotes by Elyne Mitchell
CBGB was a wild place, ... The first time I ever played there was in 1987, I think, with my hardcore band, Scream. And I remember the craziest [thing] about that club was you could be in
front of the stage and it could be louder than any show you've ever been to in your life. But if you were towards the back of the club at the bar, you could sit and have a conversation with
someone. It was the weirdest thing to me. ~ Dave Grohl
Wild Places quotes by Dave Grohl
All Americans have benefited from the dedicated service of Representative Henry Waxman. In every battle and in every moment that mattered most, Rep. Waxman stood up for the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the wild places we cherish. ~ Frances Beinecke
Wild Places quotes by Frances Beinecke
It's 11 am and I'm sitting in a restaurant
3 beers in. Believe me, even I'm surprised
I'm still alive sometimes.
I have been drinking about you for 2 days.
Lately you remind me of a wild thing
chewing through its foot. But you
are already free and I don't know what to do
except trace the rough line of your jaw
and try not to place blame.
Here is the truth: It is hard to be in love
with someone who is in love someone else.
I don't know how to turn that into poetry. ~ Clementine Von Radics
Wild Places quotes by Clementine Von Radics
Ridley creates a very immersive world, so when you walk up to a Ridley Scott film set you're in Ridley Scott's imagination, and it's a really comfortable, cool place to be. ~ Chiwetel Ejiofor
Wild Places quotes by Chiwetel Ejiofor
Risking your own life in order to entertain others is the height of stupidity. ~ Mokokoma Mokhonoana
Wild Places quotes by Mokokoma Mokhonoana
If you do your research on hot springs all over the world, they're usually places of peace. People, even in warring nations and so forth, they'll go and live in peace together around the hot springs, which were always considered medicinal. I firmly believe in water therapy. ~ Larry Hagman
Wild Places quotes by Larry Hagman
There are definitely some songs you sing and you just know there's something about it - there's kind of a touch on it that's different. But there are no rules to that. Every time, it's a surprise and it's humbling to hear that people are singing the songs in different places and different parts of the world. We're always amazed by that. ~ Reuben Morgan
Wild Places quotes by Reuben Morgan
He moved in a dance with the cosmos, practicing the steps that would take him to the places he wanted to see. As he circled, he gained wisdom and became truly more than he'd been. ~ Colleen Houck
Wild Places quotes by Colleen Houck
Krakow is one of my favorite places on earth. It is a medieval city full of young people. A wonderful, striking combination. ~ Jonathan Carroll
Wild Places quotes by Jonathan Carroll
If men will permit themselves to think, as rational beings ought to think, nothing can appear more ridiculous and absurd, exclusive of all moral reflections, than to be at the expence of building navies, filling them with men, and then hauling them into the ocean, to try which can sink each other fastester. Peace, which costs nothing, is attended with infintely more advantage than any victory with all its expence. But this, though it best answers the purpose of Nations, does not that of Court Governments, whose habited policy is pretence for taxation, places, and offices. ~ Thomas Paine
Wild Places quotes by Thomas Paine
I'm shy, but when the time comes to be wild, I'm fun-loving, adventurous, and mysterious. ~ Leonardo DiCaprio
Wild Places quotes by Leonardo DiCaprio
History may be servitude. History may be freedom. See, now they vanish. The faces and places, with the self which, as it could, loved them, to become renewed, transfigured, in another pattern. ~ T. S. Eliot
Wild Places quotes by T. S. Eliot
The definition of Man recited itself in my head ...
And God created man in His own image. And God decreed that man should have one body, one head, two arms and two legs: that each arm should be joined in two places and end in one hand: that each hand should have four fingers and one thumb: that each finger should bear a flat finger-nail ... Then God created woman, also, in the same image, but with these differences, according to her nature: her voice would be of higher pitch than man's: she should grow no beard: she should have two breasts ...
And any creature that shall seem to be human, but is not formed thus is not human. It is neither man, nor woman. It is a blasphemy against the true image of God, and hateful in the sight of God. ~ John Wyndham
Wild Places quotes by John Wyndham
I'm looking at all this and I'm thinking that one day I won't be here to see it and I know I'll miss it, even if I won't have a heartbeat to miss anything. I miss it now for the-days-when, the way I miss places I've never traveled to or things I've never done." "What things have you never done?" "You're young and you're very handsome - how could you possibly understand?" He removed his arm. He lived in a future that wouldn't be his to live in and longed for a past that hadn't been his either. There was no turning back and no going forward. I felt for him. ~ Andre Aciman
Wild Places quotes by Andre Aciman
Can we account for instinct?' said Monte Cristo. 'Are there not some places where we seem to breathe sadness? - why, we cannot tell. It is a chain of recollections - an idea which carries you back to other times, to other places - which, very likely, have no connection with the present time and place. ~ Alexandre Dumas
Wild Places quotes by Alexandre Dumas
Those rare souls whose spirit gets magically into the hearts of men leave behind them something real and warmly personal ... the grace of a fine spirit pervades the places through which it has passed, like the haunting loveliness of mignonette. ~ James Thurber
Wild Places quotes by James Thurber
One of the first places where I started to respond to song lyrics was in reggae music. A lot of what I was responding to were references to the Old Testament. It was not that I had to adapt the lyrics to the sound. Reggae and the Old Testament are bound up together. There wasn't anything that I had to do. ~ Matisyahu
Wild Places quotes by Matisyahu
Historically and geographically speaking, Gnosticism developed at the same time and in the same places as early Christianity, with which it was, and remained, entwined - Palestine, Syria, Samaria, and Anatolia, and later, Ptolemaic Egypt. ~ Stephan A. Hoeller
Wild Places quotes by Stephan A. Hoeller
He brings to naught, destroys and rejects all that is not His own work; how He draws everything to Himself and absorbs it, that at last He may live and work in us and through us and reign alone as king. Happy the soul who refuses nothing to love, but places everything at His disposal, for only thus may all our works be done more and more in God. ~ Gerhard Tersteegen
Wild Places quotes by Gerhard Tersteegen
By the sympathy of your human hearts for sin ye shall scent out all the places - whether in church, bedchamber, street, field, or forest - where crime has been committed, and shall exult to behold the whole earth one stain of guilt, one mighty blood spot. ~ Nathaniel Hawthorne
Wild Places quotes by Nathaniel Hawthorne
It is difficult finding intelligence that is actionable in a lot of these places, but we have to keep trying. ~ Hillary Clinton
Wild Places quotes by Hillary Clinton
I tell you Schoonmaker she doesn't know what she has. That's the heart of it. She's like some wild creature who hasn't a clue the worth of its coat. ~ Anna Godbersen
Wild Places quotes by Anna Godbersen
The key to walking around places where you're not supposed to be is to look like you're too important to be interrupted. Most people are non-confrontational by nature, and if you give them a good reason not to challenge you, they won't. I ~ Craig Schaefer
Wild Places quotes by Craig Schaefer
I find myself doing fieldwork physically, in the tradition of anthropology. I literally go to the opposite end of the world, to the most exotic faraway places I possibly can, only to find the closest things to me when I get there. ~ Aleksandra Mir
Wild Places quotes by Aleksandra Mir
Yes, there have to be places for safe wonderful stories. ~ Maurice Sendak
Wild Places quotes by Maurice Sendak
Man desires to be free and he desires to feel important. This places him in a dilemma, for the more he emancipates himself from necessity the less important he feels. ~ W. H. Auden
Wild Places quotes by W. H. Auden
Westernization, coupled with globalization, has created an affluent and leisured elite that now gravitates to universities, the media, bureaucracies, and world organizations, all places where wealth is not created, but analyzed, critiqued, and lavishly spent. ~ Victor Davis Hanson
Wild Places quotes by Victor Davis Hanson
You know how to tell when you're getting old? When your broad mind changes places with your narrow waist. ~ Red Skelton
Wild Places quotes by Red Skelton
Perhaps that was the reason she felt so hemmed in. Islands were places in between; places neither here nor there, but rather places on the way somewhere. That was how she felt. Not settled. ~ Kimberley Freeman
Wild Places quotes by Kimberley Freeman
I believe aphorisms are best when first read in the wild, free from the confines of any categories. ~ James Geary
Wild Places quotes by James Geary
But St. Mary's was still a prison. Those boys who entered with reasonably secure psyches might receive some valuable training and survive well enough. But for the others -- the neglected, sick, half-wild incorrigibles who had been thrown in as a last resort -- it represented nothing less than a death camp of the spirit. If you could meet them halfway, the brothers probably wouldn't hurt you, and conceivably might help. But if you were unable to meet them halfway -- if you didn't even know where halfway was or how to get there -- only a miracle could allow you to emerge a whole person. ~ Ken Sobol
Wild Places quotes by Ken Sobol
Fiction is a set of observable manifestations, as represented and frozen in language, that triggers a profoundly subjective and individual experience.

Ultimately, this is the kind of productive dilemma that can allow fiction to get to places that other media does not. Fiction is exceptionally good at providing models for consciousness, and at putting readers in a position to take upon themselves the structure of another consciousness for a short while. It is better at this than any other genre or media, and can do it in any number of modes (realistic or metafictional, reliably or unreliably, representationally or metafictionally, etc.). But for it to be able to do this as well as it possibly can, it must clear a space. This is where, for me, doing without becomes most crucial.

The subtractions that we find in innovative fictions (even when those subtractions, as in Joyce's work, are followed by further ornamentations and encrustations) are there to facilitate the simulation of consciousness. What is subtracted is the significance and meaning designed to let us classify an experience without entering into it. Doing without such things opens the door wider for experience, putting the reader in a position where they are experiencing fiction in lieu of understanding it.

By paying more attention to what we leave out than to how readers are going to interpret or work after the fact, we refuse to let fiction be assimilable, digestible, and safe. We k ~ Brian Evenson
Wild Places quotes by Brian Evenson
In the Game of Life, as in our world, self-reproducing patterns are complex objects. One estimate, based on the earlier work of mathematician John von Neumann, places the minimum size of a self-replicating pattern in the Game of Life at ten trillion squares - roughly the number of molecules in a single human cell. ~ Stephen Hawking
Wild Places quotes by Stephen Hawking
If you allow yourself, you can become stronger in the very places that you've been broken. ~ Jane Fonda
Wild Places quotes by Jane Fonda
My Christmas present to myself each year is to see how much air travel can open up the world and take me to places as far from sheltered California and Japan as possible. ~ Pico Iyer
Wild Places quotes by Pico Iyer
I was originally going to train as a journalist, passing a series of exams that winnowed ten thousand applicants down to one hundred places on a National Union of Journalists course. ~ Warren Ellis
