Language as a Prison

The Philippines did have a written language before the Spanish colonists arrived, contrary to what many of those colonists subsequently claimed. However, it was a language that some theorists believe was mainly used as a mnemonic device for epic poems. There was simply no need for a European-style written language in a decentralized land of small seaside fishing villages that were largely self-sufficient.

One theory regarding language is that it is primarily a useful tool born out of a need for control. In this theory written language was needed once top-down administration of small towns and villages came into being. Once there were bosses there arose a need for written language. The rise of the great metropolises of Ur and Babylon made a common written language an absolute necessity - but it was only a tool for the administrators. Administrators and rulers needed to keep records and know names - who had rented which plot of land, how many crops did they sell, how many fish did they catch, how many children do they have, how many water buffalo? More important, how much then do they owe me? In this account of the rise of written language, naming and accounting seem to be language's primary "civilizing" function. Language and number are also handy for keeping track of the movement of heavenly bodies, crop yields, and flood cycles. Naturally, a version of local oral languages was eventually translated into symbols as well, and nonadmi ~ David Byrne
Water Buffalo quotes by David Byrne
Turbulence: This is what pilots announce that you have encountered when your plane strikes an object in midair. You'll be flying along, and there will be an enormous, shuddering WHUMP, and clearly the plane has rammed into an airborne object at least the size of a water buffalo, and the pilot will say, "Folks, we're encountering a little turbulence." Meanwhile they are up there in the cockpit trying desperately to clean water buffalo organs off the windshield. ~ Dave Barry
Water Buffalo quotes by Dave Barry
At last, after almost fifty years in the hopper, the most famous unpublished novel in America is in print. Who Shot the Water Buffalo? is a splendid story of comradeship in a time and place of constant peril, but it's Babbs's irrepressible exuberance and vast, affectionate good humor that make the story go. I love this novel. ~ Ed McClanahan
Water Buffalo quotes by Ed McClanahan
You first, Tommy said. They stood in the great room of their loft on either side of the futon, where the huge cat, a crossbreed between a Persian, a dust mop, and possibly a water buffalo, was actively shedding. ~ Christopher Moore
Water Buffalo quotes by Christopher Moore
Ho Chi Minh and Vietnam were perfect for Lyndon Johnson: 220 million against 18 million, water buffalo and all. No risk, really. ~ David Douglas Duncan
Water Buffalo quotes by David Douglas Duncan
Forty feet long sixty feet high hotel
Covered with old gray for buzzing flies
Eye like mango flowing orange pus
Ears Durga people vomiting in their sleep
Got huge legs a dozen buses move inside Calcutta
Swallowing mouthfuls of dead rats
Mangy dogs bark out of a thousand breasts
Garbage pouring from its ass behind alleys
Always pissing yellow Hooghly water
Bellybutton melted Chinatown brown puddles
Coughing lungs Sound going down the sewer
Nose smell a big gray Bidi
Heart bumping and crashing over tramcar tracks
Covered with a hat of cloudy iron
Suffering water buffalo head lowered
To pull the huge cart of year uphill ~ Allen Ginsberg
Water Buffalo quotes by Allen Ginsberg
Either the kid was naturally hyper or he was hopped up on enough caffeine to give a heart attack to a water buffalo. ~ Rick Riordan
Water Buffalo quotes by Rick Riordan
As obident as dogs and as stupid as water buffalo. ~ Lisa See
Water Buffalo quotes by Lisa See
They feed you, like, eight times a day, which is why cruise people always look like hairless water buffalo wearing sneakers. ~ Dave Barry
Water Buffalo quotes by Dave Barry
I love people who harness themselves, an ox to a heavy cart, who pull like water buffalo, with massive patience, who strain in the mud and the muck to move things forward, who do what has to be done, again and again. ~ Marge Piercy
Water Buffalo quotes by Marge Piercy
Beside him, Gauri looked distraught. Chivalry demanded that he
should inquire after the Princess's well- being. She caught
him looking at her and frowned:
"You're heaving like a water buffalo in its death throes."
Never mind. ~ Roshani Chokshi
Water Buffalo quotes by Roshani Chokshi
This is one of those big, fat paperbacks, intended to while away a monsoon or two, which, if thrown with a good overarm action, will bring a water buffalo to its knees. ~ Nancy Banks-Smith
Water Buffalo quotes by Nancy Banks-Smith
I scrambled off the water buffalo, biting back a wince as I struggled for some balance. Catching my breath, I backed away from Amar. In the shadows, the hood over his face glinted sinister.
"Do not come near me!" I hissed.
Amar halted.
"Let me explain," he began. "I understand that this is not--"
I lunged for a stick and brandished it at him.
"Who are you?"
Amar laughed. "A stick? I've brought you to the Night Bazaar; do you really think a stick would protect you?" I gripped the stick harder. "Not that you need protection from me," he added quickly.
"Who are you?"
"Amar."
"Where are you from?"
"Akaran."
I gave him a hard look, but I wasn't sure how much he could see through his covering. "What are you?"
He drew himself up. "A raja and your husband."
There was no hesitation in his voice.
"Why have you brought me here?" My voice shook. I couldn't stop staring at the Night Bazaar. There it was. And here I was. Standing on the same plot of land shared with beings that--until now--had only existed in stories. "What do you want from me?"
He stopped. The smile was gone from his lips.
"I want your perspective and honesty," he said, before adding in a softer voice, "I want to be humbled by you. ~ Roshani Chokshi
Water Buffalo quotes by Roshani Chokshi
Max raised the mallet. He stared into her face and wished he could say he was sorry, that he didn't want to do it. When he slammed the mallet down, with an echoing bang, he heard a high, piercing scream and almost screamed himself, believing for an instant it was her, still somehow alive; then realized it was Rudy. Max was powerfully built, with his, deep water-buffalo chest and Dutch farmer's shoulders. With the first blow he had driven the stake over two-thirds of the way in. He only needed to bring the mallet down once more. The blood that squelched up around the wood was cold and had a sticky, viscous consistency.

Max swayed, his head light. His father took his arm.

'Goot,' Abraham whispered into his ear, his arms around him, squeezing him so tightly his ribs creaked. Max felt a little thrill of pleasure - an automatic reaction to the intense, unmistakable affection of his father's embrace - and was sickened by it. 'To do offense to the house of the human spirit, even after its tenant depart, is no easy thing, I know.'

("Abraham's Boys") ~ Joe Hill
Water Buffalo quotes by Joe Hill
Look at the man go, its like trying to stop a water-buffalo with a pea-shooter. ~ Sid Waddell
Water Buffalo quotes by Sid Waddell
I'm just an apprentice, stuck between these borrowed first and last breaths that I was given, drinking water of life, and chasing the fire of knowledge, and waiting to mingle with my eternal and faithful love, earth. ~ B. Barmanbek
Water Buffalo quotes by B. Barmanbek
To me, a forest is just a bunch of trees, but lakes and rivers are alive. Water is to the land what blood is to the land. ~ Sam Torode
Water Buffalo quotes by Sam Torode
The conventional wisdom is often wrong. ~ Steven D. Levitt
Water Buffalo quotes by Steven D. Levitt
Getting tired already, minnow?" Toraf taunts as he wraps strong arms around Galen's neck in a choke hold.
Galen promptly flips him forward and onto his back. Toraf bounces once with the force. "You must have been drinking salt water," Galen returns, "to have delusions like that."
Toraf kicks Galen's legs out from under him, and the scuffle is taken to the floor. Just when I wonder how long this can really go on, the older Syrena steps into the dining room and confirms his identity with the authority in his voice. "That's enough. Get up."
Toraf scrambles to his feet and steps away from Galen, who reluctantly complies. "Yes, Highness. Sorry, Highness," Toraf says, breathless. There is not a small amount of shame on Toraf's face.
In fact, even Galen looks conscience stricken. "Apologies, King Antonis," he says quickly. "I didn't see you there."
King Antonis. Mom's dad. My grandfather. Holy!
Antonis lifts his chin, satisfied. "I didn't think so."
Mom steps over the dish debris and embraces her dad. "Thank you for interrupting. It was getting a tad boring. It was obvious no one would win."
Mom is such a dude sometimes. Grom winks at Galen, who shrugs. ~ Anna Banks
Water Buffalo quotes by Anna Banks
The ledge isn't even wide enough for my feet to fit on completely. I hang onto the rail tightly and do a Casper does ... leaning out slowly over the water. Like this, there is no safety. No rail to catch me if I slip. I'm almost flying. Between me and death, there is ... nothing. Nothing in the way but my own decision to hang on. ~ Kelley York
Water Buffalo quotes by Kelley York
Wherever there is water there is someone drowning. ~ Robert Bly
Water Buffalo quotes by Robert Bly
Christ leads us into the wilderness of suffering to engage us there. When he meets us in the wilderness, he is manna, he is water from a broken rock. But he is also the one who wants us to potently feel our lack so that we cling to him. The Apostle Paul expressed as much when he wrote, we are 'sorrowful, yet always rejoicing.' God is the one who leads us into the desert and who makes us feel exposed and frail there. He is the one who turns the wilderness into a womb from which his children are born into gladness. And, like Hagar, we cry, 'You are the God who sees. ~ Ben Palpant
Water Buffalo quotes by Ben Palpant
The ice bucket challenge went viral in 2014, partly because it was so much fun to watch videos of celebrities or friends dumping ice water on their heads. Videos of people in the challenge have been watched more than 10 billion times on Facebook - more than once per person on the planet. ~ Nicholas Kristof
Water Buffalo quotes by Nicholas Kristof
Looking for yourself is like a thirsty fish looking for water. ~ Deepak Chopra
Water Buffalo quotes by Deepak Chopra
The covetous man pines in plenty, like Tantalus up to the chin in water, and yet thirsty. ~ Thomas Adams
Water Buffalo quotes by Thomas Adams
When the police came to San Lorenzo they were fired upon by children and grandmothers with rocks, buckets of water, rotten eggs. There was more of the proletarian shopping, as it was called, that I'd seen on the Via del Corso. Jeans for the people. Cheese and bread and wine for the people. Umbrellas for the people, because rain fell and fell that week. ~ Rachel Kushner
Water Buffalo quotes by Rachel Kushner
Such was, and is, and will be the nature of the universe, and it isn't possible that things should come into being in any other way than they do at present; and not only have human beings participated in the process of change and transformation along with all the other creatures that live on the earth, but also those beings that are divine, and, by Zeus, even the four elements, which are changed and transformed upwards and downwards, as earth becomes water, and water air, and air is transformed in turn into ether. If someone endeavours to turn his mind towards these things, and to persuade himself to accept of his own free will what must necessarily come about, he will live a very balanced and harmonious life. ~ Epictetus
Water Buffalo quotes by Epictetus
The team is showing its appreciation to the host families by taking them to a water park on Sunday. I know Mac is going out of town, but I thought you might still want to go. I mean, not as a date or anything. I'm going to invite the whole family."
"You don't have to work Sunday?"
"I got scheduled off."
"Sounds like fun. We could pack a picnic lunch--"
"I'll take care of that. As my thank you. All you have to do is bring yourself."
"And a bathing suit."
He grinned. "Yeah, and a bathing suit."
"And a towel. And suntan lotion…"
"Maybe it'd be simpler if I just said I'll take care of the tickets and eats."
"Okay, but I'll go ahead and warn you not to take it personally that Mom and Dad aren't really into water parks. It's that whole not-using-the-exercise-equipment-as-intended thing Dad has going."
His grin grew. "I won't take it personally."
"Okay, then, Sunday."
As though suddenly realized how intimate it seemed to be in my bedroom, he cleared his throat and took a step back.
He gave my room one more look and took another step back. "It's amazing what a room can reveal."
Then he walked down the hallway and knocked on Tiffany's door.
I wondered what he'd discover looking into her room. ~ Rachel Hawthorne
Water Buffalo quotes by Rachel Hawthorne
ASITA AWOKE in the forest thinking about demons. He hadn't for many years. He could remember glimpsing one or two in the past, on the fringes of a famine or a battle, wherever bodies were being harvested. He knew the misery they caused, but misery was no longer Asita's
concern. He had been a forest hermit for fifty years. The affairs of the world had been kept far away, and he passed whole days in a hidden cave when he retreated even from the affairs of animals, much less those of men.

Now Asita knelt by a stream and considered. He distinctly saw demons in his mind's eye. They had first appeared in the dappled sunlight that fell on his eyelids at dawn. Asita slept on boughs strewn over the bare ground, and he liked the play of light and shadow across his eyes in the early morning. His imagination freely saw shapes that reminded him of the market village where he grew up. He could see hawking merchants, women balancing water jugs on
their heads, camels and cara-vans - anything, really - on the screen of his closed eyes.

But never demons, not before this morning. Asita walked into the nearly freezing mountain stream, his body naked except for a loincloth. As an ascetic, he did not wear clothes, not even the robes of a monastic order. Lately he had felt an impulse to travel very high, nearly in sight of the snowcapped peaks on the north-ern border of the Sakya kingdom. Which put him close to other lokas, worlds apart from Earth. Every mortal is c ~ Deepak Chopra
Water Buffalo quotes by Deepak Chopra
I am the road running through Paris," says the Seine. 'I have carried off many images since you were a child and reflected many clouds. I am changeable, but as people are: I have my moments of happiness in the June dawn and my sinister times some December evenings. Above all I am inquisitive - you call it being in flood. We have something in common, you everlasting passers-by and I, the fleeing water, which is that we never go back: your time is my space. ~ Julien Green
Water Buffalo quotes by Julien Green
The four elements: earth, water, fire and air; the qualities recognized by touch: cold, heat, dryness, and moisture; the temperaments: sanguineous, phlegmatic, choleric, and saturnine; the faculties: natural, animal, and vital. ~ Noah Gordon
Water Buffalo quotes by Noah Gordon
Growing up out here in the country taught me things. Taught me that after the first fat flush of life, time eats away at things: it rusts machinery, it matures animals to become hairless and featherless, and it withers plants. Once a year or so, I see it in Pop, how he got leaner and leaner with age, the tendons in him standing out, harder and more rigid, every year. His Indian cheekbones severe. But since Mama got sick, I learned pain can do that, too. Can eat a person until there's nothing but bone and skin and a thin layer of blood left. How it can eat your insides and swell you in wrong ways: Mama's feet look like water balloons set to burst under the cover. ~ Jesmyn Ward
Water Buffalo quotes by Jesmyn Ward
Stand here by my side and turn, I pray,
On the lake below thy gentle eyes;
The clouds hang over it, heavy and gray,
And dark and silent the water lies;
And out of that frozen mist the snow
In wavering flakes begins to flow;
Flake after flake,
They sink in the dark and silent lake. ~ William C. Bryant
Water Buffalo quotes by William C. Bryant
Listening to her, one experienced a deep uneasiness as of having avoided an urgent responsibility, like someone who, walking at night along the banks of a stream, catches a glimpse in the water of a white face or a moving limb and turns quickly away, refusing to help or to search for help. We all see the faces in the water. We smother our memory of them, even our belief in their reality, and become calm people of the world; or we can neither forget or help them. Sometimes by a trick of circumstances or dream or a hostile neighborhood of light we see our own face. ~ Janet Frame
Water Buffalo quotes by Janet Frame
With Your sweet Soul, this soul of mine
has merged as water does with wine.
Who can part the water from the wine,
or me from You when we combine?
You have become my greater self;
how can smallness limit me?
You've taken on my being,
how shall I not take on Yours?
Forever, You have claimed me
that forever I may know You're mine. ~ Jalaluddin Rumi
Water Buffalo quotes by Jalaluddin Rumi
The greatest of all the Sioux in my time, or in any time for that matter, was that wonderful old fighting man, Sitting Bull, whose life will some day be written by a historian who can really give him his due. ~ Buffalo Bill
Water Buffalo quotes by Buffalo Bill
The brain processes meaning before detail. Providing the gist, the core concept, first was like giving a thirsty person a tall glass of water. And the brain likes hierarchy. Starting with general concepts naturally leads to explaining information in a hierarchical fashion. You have to do the general idea first. And then you will see that 40 percent improvement in understanding. ~ John Medina
Water Buffalo quotes by John Medina
Salt water is cleansing, be it sweat, the ocean, or tears. ~ Jennifer Nettles
Water Buffalo quotes by Jennifer Nettles
It's January and I'm kicking snow off the ground. I just threw out the flower you made me promise to water, handle with care, because I was too careless, you said. Careless with things and people, around me and behind
and I remember being still for just a second or two, thinking that it's so much easier to leave and start anew, than take care of what's already here. ~ Charlotte Eriksson
Water Buffalo quotes by Charlotte Eriksson
In our daily lives we "know" things in many different ways. We know, for example, that water boils at 212 degrees Fahrenheit ~ Janet Buttolph Johnson
Water Buffalo quotes by Janet Buttolph Johnson
Like a flame breaking the boundaries to survive underwater, we, too, are something beautiful. We are a substance of our own design. We're more than water. We're more than fire. We're a miracle, a living and breathing combination, with no formula to define us. ~ Renee Ericson
Water Buffalo quotes by Renee Ericson
Like a silly amateur sailor I have drifted into very deep water. ~ Anonymous
Water Buffalo quotes by Anonymous
I won't leave you. What if you have another contraction? What if your water breaks and they rush you into the delivery room? What if there are complications?" He asked hoarsely, his eyes dilating more with each anxious question. And Theresa rolled her eyes in exasperation.
"I doubt any of those things will happen in the two minutes it would take you to leave the room and get a cup of coffee, Sandro," she sighed impatiently. ~ Natasha Anders
Water Buffalo quotes by Natasha Anders
Lo: "How much did it hurt?"
Ryke: "Did what hurt?"
Lo: "Watching her with other guys."
Ryke: "It felt like someone was drowning me in fucking salt water and lighting me on fire. ~ Krista Ritchie
Water Buffalo quotes by Krista Ritchie
Crocker, it's about property values."
"It's about being in place. We -" gesturing around the Visitor's Bar and its withdrawal into seemingly unbounded shadow, "we're in place. We've been in place forever. Look around. Real estate, water rights, oil, cheap labor - all of that's ours. And you, at the end of the day, what are you? one more unit in this swarm of transients who come and go without pause here in the sunny Southland, eager to be bought off with a car of a certain make, model, and year, a blonde in a bikini, thirty seconds on some excuse for a wave - a chili dog, for Christ's sake." He shrugged. "We will never run out of you people. The supply is inexhaustible. ~ Thomas Pynchon
