Dullness is the first requisite of a good husband. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
Do you absolutely despise me, Walter?"
"No." He hesitated and his voice was strange. "I despise myself. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
I wish to deal only with the masterpieces which the consensus of opinion for a long time has accepted as supreme. We are all supposed to have read them; it is a pity that so few of us have. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
Humility is a virtue that is enjoined upon us. So far as the artist is concerned, with good reason; indeed, when he compares what he has done with what he wanted to do, when he compares his disappointing efforts with the great masterpieces of the world, he finds it the easiest of virtues to practice. Unless he is humble he cannot hope to improve. Self-satisfaction is fatal to him. The strange thing is that we are embarrassed by humility in others. We are ill at ease when they humble themselves before us. I don't know why this should be unless it is that there is something servile in it which offends our sense of human dignity. When I was engaging two coloured maids to look after me the overseer of the plantation who produced them, as a final recommendation, said: 'They're good niggers, they're humble.' Sometimes when one of them hides her face with her fingers to speak to me or with a little nervous giggle asks if she can have something I've thrown away, I'm inclined to cry: 'For heaven's sake don't be so humble.'
Or is it that humility in others forces upon us the consciousness of our own unworthiness? ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
Larry sat with his arm stretched out along the top of the front seat. His shirt cuff was pulled back by his position and displayed his slim, strong wrist and the lower part of his brown arm lightly covered with fine hairs. The sun shone goldly upon them. Something in Isabel's immobility attracted my attention, and I glanced at her. She was so still that you might have thought her hypnotized. Her breath was hurried. Her eyes were fixed on the sinewy wrist with its little golden hairs and on that long, delicate, but powerful hand, and I have never seen on a human countenance such a hungry concupiscence as I saw then on hers. It was a mask of lust. I would never have believed that her beautiful features could assume an expression of such unbridled sensuality. It was animal rather than human. The beauty was stripped from her face; the look upon it made her hideous and frightening. It horribly suggested the bitch in heat and I felt rather sick. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
She plunged into a sea of platitudes, and with the powerful breast stroke of a channel swimmer, made her confident way towards the white cliffs of the obvious. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
Some American delusions: 1) That there is no class-consciousness in the country. 2) That American coffee is good. 3) That Americans are business-like. 4) That Americans are highly-sexed and that redheads are more highly sexed than others. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
He had always had a passion for life and the idealism he had come across seemed to him for the most part a cowardly shrinking from it. The idealist withdrew himself because he could not suffer the jostling of the human crowd; he had not the strength to fight and so called the battle vulgar; he was vain and since his fellows would not take him at his own estimate, consoled himself with despising his fellows. For Phillip, this type was Hayward, fair, languid, too fat now and rather bald, still cherishing the remains of his good looks and still delicately proposing to do exquisite things in the uncertain future; and at the back of this were whiskey and vulgar amours of the street. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
It was strange that Walter with all his cleverness should have so little sense of proportion. Because he had dressed a doll in gorgeous robes and set her in a sanctuary to worship her, and then discovered that the doll was filled with sawdust he could neither forgive himself nor her. His soul was lacerated. It was all make-believe that he had lived on, and when the truth shattered it he thought reality itself was shattered. It was true enough, he would not forgive her because he could not forgive himself. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
The Almighty can hardly be such a fool as the churches make out. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
A woman may be as wicked as she likes, but if she isn't pretty it won't do her much good. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
He had passed his life in the pursuit of happiness, and had never learnt that happiness is best attained when it is not sought; and, moreover, is only known when it is lost. It is doubtful whether anyone can say "I am happy"; but only "I was happy". For happiness is not well-being, content, heart's ease, pleasure, enjoyment: all these go to make happiness, but they are not happiness. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
He mingled idleness and idealism so that he could not separate them. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
The arguments for immortality, weak when you take them one by one, are no more cogent when you take them together ... For my part, I cannot see how consciousness can persist when its physical basis has been destroyed, and I am too sure of the interconnection of my body and my mind to think that any survival of my my consciousness apart from my body would be in any sense a survival of myself. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
I know that I shall die struggling for breath, and I know that I shall be horribly afraid. I know that I shall not be able to keep myself from regretting bitterly the life that has brought me to such a pass; but I disown that regret. I now, weak, old, diseased, poor, dying, hold still my soul in my hands, and I regret nothing. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
Though I said that affection was the greatest enemy of love, I would never deny that it's a very good substitute. I'm not sure that a marriage founded on it isn't the happiest.
[The book-bag] ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
The faculty for myth is innate in the human race. It seizes with avidity upon any incidents, surprising or mysterious, in the career of those who have at all distinguished themselves from their fellows, and invents a legend to which it then attaches a fanatical belief. It is the protest of romance against the commonplace of life. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
Can the law get blood out of a stone? I haven't any money. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
A good Havana is one of the best pleasures that I know. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
My native gifts are not remarkable, but I have a certain force of character which has enabled me in a measure to supplement my deficiencies. I have common-sense. Most people cannot see anything, but I can see what is in the front of my nose with extreme clearness; the greatest writers can see through a brick wall. My vision is not so penetrating. For many years I have been described as a cynic; I told the truth. I wish no one to take me for other than I am, and on the other hand I see no need to accept others' pretences. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
Mrs. Strickland was plainly nervous. "Well, tell us your news," she said. "I saw your husband. I'm afraid he's quite made up his mind not to return." I paused a little. "He wants to paint. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
He had not even the self-complacency that enables stupid people to accept their mediocrity with unction; he had on the contrary an engaging modesty. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
Perhaps that is the wisdom of life, to tread in your father's steps, and look neither to the right nor to the left. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
It is not wealth one asks for, but just enough to preserve one's dignity, to work unhampered, to be generous, frank and independent. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
The Americans, who are the most efficient people on the earth, have carried [phrase-making] to such a height of perfection and have invented so wide a range of pithy and hackneyed phrases that they can carry on an amusing and animated conversation without giving a moment's reflection to what they are saying and so leave their minds free to consider the more important matters of big business and fornication. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
His life had seemed horrible when it was measured by its happiness, but now he seemed to gather strength as he realised that it might be measured by something else. Happiness mattered as little as pain. They came in, both of them, as all the other details of his life came in, to the elaboration of the design. He seemed for an instant to stand above the accidents of his existence, and he felt that they could not affect him again as they had done before. Whatever happened to him now would be one more motive to add to the complexity of the pattern, and when the end approached he would rejoice in its completion. It would be a work of art, and it would be none the less beautiful because he alone knew of its existence, and with his death it would at once cease to be.
Philip was happy. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
I happen to think we've set our ideal on the wrong objects; I happen to think that the greatest ideal man can set before himself is self-perfection. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
Yet magic is no more the art of employing consciously invisible means to produce visible effects. Will, love, and imagination are magic powers that everyone possesses; and whoever knows how to develop them to their fullest extent is a magician. Magic has but one dogma, namely, that the seen is the measure of the unseen. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
You should read Spanish,' he said. 'It is a noble tongue. It has not the mellifluousness of Italian
Italian is the language of tenors and organ-grinders
but it has grandeur: it does not ripple like a brook in a garden, but it surges tumultuous like a mighty river in a flood. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
I do not attach
any exaggerated importance to my poetical works. Life is
there to be lived rather than to be written about. My aim
is to search out the manifold experience that it offers,
wringing from each moment what of emotion it presents.
I look upon my writing as a graceful accomplishment
which does not absorb but rather adds pleasure to
existence. And as for posterity - damn posterity. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
It wasn't until late in life that I discovered how easy it is to say I don't know. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
I want a girl because I want to bring her up so that she shan't make the mistakes I've made. When I look back upon the girl I was I hate myself. But I never had a chance. I'm going to bring up my daughter so that she's free and can stand on her own feet. I´m not going to bring a child into the world, and love her, and bring her up, just so that some man may want to sleep with her so much that he's willing to provide her with board and lodging for the rest of her life. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
He was interested in the human side of that struggle to express something which was so obscure in the man's mind that he was become morbid and querulous. Philip felt vaguely that he himself was himself in the same case, but with him it was the conduct of his life as a whole that perplexed him. That was his means of self-expression, and what he must do with it was not clear. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
The humour of Dostoievsky is the humour of a barloafer who ties a kettle to a dog's tail. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
How strange was the relation between parents and children! When they were small the parents doted on them, passed through agonies of apprehension at each childish ailment, and the children clung to their parents with love and adoration; a few years passed, the children grew up, and persons not of their kin were more important to their happiness than father or mother. Indifference displaced the blind and instinctive love of the past. Their meetings were a source of boredom and irritation. Distracted once at the thought of a month's separation they were able now to look forward with equanimity to being parted for years. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
You know, of course, that the Tasmanians, who never committed adultery, are now extinct. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
Without knowing it he drew a very pleasant picture of an affectionate, happy family who lived unpretentiously in circumstances of moderate affluence at peace with themselves and the world and undisturbed by any fear that anything might happen to affect their security. The life he described lacked neither grace nor dignity; it was healthy and normal, and through its intellectual interests not entirely material; the persons who led it were simple and honest, neither ambitious nor envious, prepared to do their duty by the state and by their neighbors according to their lights; and there was in them neither harm nor malice. If Lydia saw how much of their good nature, their kindliness, their unpleasing self-complacency depended on the long-established and well-ordered prosperity of the country that had given them birth; if she had an inkling that, like children building castles on the sea sand, they might at any moment be swept away by a tidal wave, she allowed no sign of it to appear on her face. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
Its like reproaching someone who has no ear for music because he's bored at a symphony concert. Is it fair to blame me because you ascribed to me qualities that I hadn't got? I never tried to deceive you by pretending I was anything I wasn't. I was just pretty and gay. You don't ask for a pearl necklace or a sable coat at a booth in a fair; you ask for a tin trumpet and a toy balloon. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
Nature has neither love nor hate, and with indifference smiles upon the light at heart and to the heavy brings a deeper sorrow. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
No one any good you be sure,' said Mrs. Kemp. 'I can't swaller these new people as are comin' in; the street ain't wot it was when I fust come.' When ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
The fact was that he had ceased to believe not for this reason or the other, but because he had not the religious temperament. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
All his plans were suddenly overthrown, and the existence, so elaborately pictured, was no more than a dream which would never be realized. He was free once more. Free! He need give up none of his projects, and life still was in his hands for him to do what he liked with. He felt no exhiliration, but only dismay. His heart sank. The future stretched out before him in desolate emptiness. It was as though he had sailed for many years over a great waste of waters, with peril and privation, and at last had come upon a fair haven, but as he was about to enter, some contrary wind had arisen and drove him out again into the open sea; and because he had let his mind dwell on these meads and pleasant woods of the land, the vast deserts of the ocean filled him with anguish. He could not confront again the loneliness and the tempest. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
Don't you think he may be pursuing an ideal that is hidden in a cloud of unknowing - like an astronomer looking for a star that only a mathematical calculation tells him exists? ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
Mrs. MacAndrew shared the common opinion of her sex that a man is always a brute to leave a woman who is attached to him, but that a woman is much to blame if he does. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
You will find as you grow older that the first thing needful to make the world a tolerable place to live in is to recognize the inevitable selfishness of humanity. You demand unselfishness from others, which is a preposterous claim that they should sacrifice their desires to yours. Why should they? When you are reconciled to the fact that each is for himself in the world you will ask less from your fellows. They will not disappoint you, and you will look upon them more charitably. Men seek but one thing in life -- their pleasure. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
A bird in the hand was worth two in the bush, he told her, to which she retorted that a proverb was the last refuge of the mentally destitute. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
Heaven knows what pains the author has been at, what bitter experience he has endured and what heartache suffered, to give some chance reader a few hours' relaxation or to while away the tedium of a journey. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
Human beings filled him with disgust. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
Why don't you give up drinking?"
"Because I don't choose. It doesn't matter what a man does if he's ready to take the consequences. Well, I'm ready to take the consequences. You talk glibly of giving up drinking, but it's the only thing I've got left now. What do you think life would be to me without it? Can you understand the happiness I get out of my absinthe? I yearn for it; and when I drink it I savour every drop, and afterwards I feel my soul swimming in ineffable happiness. It disgusts you. You are a puritan and in your heart you despise sensual pleasures. Sensual pleasures are the most violent and the most exquisite. I am a man blessed with vivid senses, and I have indulged them with all my soul. I have to pay the penalty now, and I am ready to pay. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
Peculiar excitement at the mysterious array. She ran her eyes ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
The audience is not the least important actor in the play and if it will not do its allotted share the play falls to pieces. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
After all, it's not my fault. I can't force myself to believe. If there is a God after all and he punishes me because I honestly don't believe in Him I can't help it. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
The novel may stimulate you to think. It may satisfy your aesthetic sense. It may arouse your moral emotions. But if it does not entertain you it is a bad novel. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
The Work of Art. When I watch the audience at a concert or the crowd in the picture gallery I ask myself sometimes what exactly is their reaction towards the work of art. It is plain that often they feel deeply, but I do not see that their feeling has any effect, and if it has no effect its value is slender. Art to them is only a recreation or a refuge. It rests them from the work which they consider the justification of their existence or consoles them in their disappointment with reality. It is the glass of beer which the labourer drinks when he pauses in his toil or the peg of gin which the harlot takes to snatch a moment's oblivion from the pain of life. Art for art's sake means no more than gin for gin's sake. The dilettante who cherishes the sterile emotions which he receives from the contemplation of works of art has little reason to rate himself higher than the toper. His is the attitude of the pessimist. Life is a struggle or a weariness and in art he seeks repose or forgetfulness. The pessimist refuses reality, but the artist accepts it. The emotion caused by a work of art has value only if it has an effect on character and so results in action. Whoever is so affected is himself an artist. The artist's response to the work of art is direct and reasonable, for in him the emotion is translated into ideas which are pertinent to his own purposes, and to him ideas are but another form of action. But I do not mean that it is only painters, poets and musicians who can resp ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
He was at once to great and too small for love. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
A novel cannot be made of facts alone; in themselves they are dead things. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
I would sooner a writer were vulgar than mincing; for life is vulgar, and it is life he seeks. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
From a social standpoint the man of science does not exist. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
There are many foolish people in the world and when a man in a rather high position puts on no frills, slaps them on the back, and tells them he'll do anything in the world for them, they are very likely to think him clever. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
People do tell a writer things that they don't tell others. I don't know why, unless it is that having read one or two of his books they feel on peculiarly intimate terms with him; or it may be that they dramatize themselves and, seeing themselves as it were as characters in a novel, are ready to be as open with him as they imagine the characters of his invention are. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
People may not remember exactly what you did or what you said but they will always remember how you made them feel. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
I should have known that I wasn't meant for happiness and a life of ease. I have other work to do in the world. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
The crown of literature is poetry. It is the end and aim. It is the sublimest activity od the human mind. It is the achievement of beauty. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
We who are of mature age seldom suspect how unmercifully and yet with what insight the very young judge us. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
Is that what we come into the world for, to hurry to an office, and work hour after hour till night, then hurry home and dine and go to a theatre? Is that how I must spend my youth? Youth lasts so short a time, Bateman. And when I am old, what have I to look forward to? To hurry from my home in the morning to my office and work hour after hour after hour till night, and then hurry home again, and dine and go to a theatre? That may be worthwhile if you make a fortune; I don't know, it depends on your nature; but if you don't, is it worth while then? I want to make more out of my life than that, Bateman. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
All sensible people know that vanity is the most devastating, the most universal, and the most ineradicable of the passions that afflict the soul of man, and it is only vanity that makes him deny its power. It is more consuming than love. With advancing years, mercifully, you can snap your fingers at the terror and the servitude of love, but age cannot free you from the thraldom of vanity. Time can assuage the pangs of love, but only death can still the anguish of wounded vanity. Love is simple and seeks no subterfuge, but vanity cozens you with a hundred disguises. It is part and parcel of every virtue: it is mainspring of courage and the strength of ambition; it gives constancy to the lover and endurance to the stoic; it adds fuel to the fire of the artist's desire for fame and is at once the support and the compensation of the honest man's integrity; it leers even cynically in the humility of the saint. You cannot escape it, and should you take pains to guard against it, it will make use of those very pains to trip you up. You are defenseless against its onslaught because you know not on what unprotected side it will attack you. Sincerity cannot protect you from its snare nor humour from its mockery.
[His Excellency] ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
Every production of an artist should be the expression of an adventure of his soul. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
The moral I draw is that the writer should seek his reward in the pleasure of his work and in release from the burden of thought; and, indifferent to aught else, care nothing for praise or censure, failure or success. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
Happily men don't realise how stupid they are, or half the world would commit suicide. Knowledge is a will-of-the-wisp, fluttering ever out of the traveller's reach; and a weary journey must be endured before it is even seen. It is only when a man knows a good deal that he discovers how unfathomable is his ignorance. The man who knows nothing is satisfied that there is nothing to know, consequently that he knows everything; and you may more easily persuade him that the moon is made of green cheese than that he is not omniscient. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
She had never felt so light of heart and it seemed to her as though her body were a shell that lay at her feet and she pure spirit. Here was Beauty. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
Those words, though heaven only knew how often she had heard them, still gave her her thrill. They braced her like a tonic. Life acquired significance. She was about to step from the world of make-believe into the world of reality. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
In a great library, you get into society in the widest sense ... From that great crowd you can choose what companions you please, for in these silent gatherings ... the highest is at the service of the lowest with a grand humility. In a library you become a true citizen of the world. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
It was such a lovely day I thought it was a pity to get up. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
I began to meditate upon the writer's life. It is full of tribulation. First he must endure poverty and the world's indifference; then, having achieved a measure of success, he must submit to a good grace of its hazards...But he has one compensation, Whenever he has anything on his mind, whether it be a harassing reflection, grief at the death of a friend, unrequited love, wounded pride, anger at the treachery of someone to whom he has shown kindness, in short any emotion or any perplexing thought, he has only to put it down in black and white, using it as a theme of a story or the decoration of an essay, to forget all about it. He is the only free man. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
Flaubert prided himself on his frankness; it was indeed brutal. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
It amused him sometimes to consider that his friends, because he had a face which did not express his feelings very vividly and a rather slow way of moving, looked upon him as strong-minded, deliberate and cool. They thought him reasonable and praised his common sense; but he knew that his placid expression was no more than a mask, assumed unconsciously, which acted like the protective colouring of butterflies; and himself was astonished at the weakness of his will. It seemed to him that he was swayed by every light emotion, as though he were a leaf in the wind, and when passion seized him he was powerless. He had no self-control. He merely seemed to possess it because he was indifferent to many of the things which moved other people.

He considered with some irony the philosophy which he had developed for himself, for it had not been of much use to him in the conjuncture he had passed through; and he wondered whether thought really helped a man in any of the critical affairs of life: it seemed to him rather that he was swayed by some power alien to and yet within himself, which urged him like that great wind of Hell which drove Paolo and Francesca ceaselessly on. He thought of what he was going to do and, when the time came to act, he was powerless in the grasp of instincts, emotions, he knew not what. He acted as though he were a machine driven by the two forces of his environment and personality; his reason was someone looking on, observing the facts but powerles ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
If you can tell stories, create characters, devise incidents, and have sincerity and passion, it doesn't matter a damn how you write. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
Great writers create; writers of smaller gifts copy ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
The new-born child does not realise that his body is more a part of himself than surrounding objects, and will play with his toes without any feeling that they belong to him more than the rattle by his side; and it is only by degrees, through pain, that he understands the fact of the body. And experiences of the same kind are necessary for the individual to become conscious of himself; but here there is the difference that, although everyone becomes equally conscious of his body as a separate and complete organism, everyone does not become equally conscious of himself as a complete and separate personality. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
The artist produces for the liberation of his soul. It is his nature to create as it is the nature of water to run down the hill. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
I ought to have lived in the eighteen hundreds,' he said himself. 'What I want is a patron. I should have published my poems by subscription and dedicated them to a nobleman. I long to compose rhymed couplets upon the poodle of a countess. My soul yearns for the love of chambermaids and the conversation of bishops. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
The great tragedy of life is not that men perish, but that they cease to love. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
Old age is ready to undertake tasks that youth shirked because they would take too long. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
Like many another member of the gentle sex, she seems to have been ready enough to accept the perquisites of her position, but saw no reason why she should be asked to give anything in return. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
Evil is as direct a manifestation of the divine as good. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
A Unitarian very earnestly disbelieves in almost everything that anybody else believes, and he has a very lively sustaining faith in he doesn't quite know what. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
I used to listen to the monks repeating the Lord's Prayer; I wondered how they could continue to pray without misgiving to their heavenly father to give them their daily bread. Do children beseech their earthly father to give them sustenance? They expect him to do it, they neither feel gratitude to him for doing so nor need to, and we have only blame for a man who brings children into the world that he can't or won't provide for. It seemed to me that if an omnipotent creator was not prepared to provide for his creatures with the necessities, material and spiritual, of existence he'd have done better not to create them. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
It was all very strange and complicated. It looked as though nothing were quite so simple as it seemed; it looked as though the people we thought we knew best carried secrets that they didn't even know themselves. W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
He did not know what he sought or what his journeys would bring him; but he had a feeling that he would learn something new about life and gain some clue about the mystery that he had solved only to find more mysterious. W Somerset Maugham quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
And thinking over the long pilgrimage of his past he accepted it joyfully. He accepted the deformity which had made life so hard for him; he knew that it had warped his character, but now he saw also that by reason of it he had acquired that power of introspection which had given him so much delight. Without it he would never have had his keen appreciation of beauty, his passion for art and literature, and his interest in the varied spectacle of life. It may be that I lead the life I've planned for myself it may affect others; the effect may be no greater than the ripple caused by a stone thrown in a pond, but one ripple causes another and that one a third; it's just possible that a few people will see that my way of life offers happiness and peace, and that they in their turn will teach what they have learned to others. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
