Liberalism is, in fact, the ideology of the capitalist revolution that prodigiously raised the living standards of the mass of people; a doctrine gradually elaborated over several centuries, which offered a new concept of social order, encompassing freedom in the only form suited to the modern world. Step by step, in practice and theory, the various sectors of human activity were withdrawn from the jurisdiction of coercive authority and given over to the voluntary action of self-regulating society. ~ Ralph Raico
Voluntary Action quotes by Ralph Raico
If we can implant in our people the Christian virtues which we sum up in the word character, and, at the same time, give them a knowledge of the line which should be drawn between voluntary action and governmental compulsion in a democracy, and of what can be accomplished within the stern laws of economics, we will enable them to retain their freedom, and at the same time, make them worthy to be free. ~ Winthrop W. Aldrich
Voluntary Action quotes by Winthrop W. Aldrich
Take terrorism, one example among the methods used in that struggle. We know that leftist tradition condemns terrorism and political assassination. When the colonized uses them, the leftist colonizer becomes unbearably embarrassed. He makes an effort to separate them from the colonized's voluntary action; to make an epiphenomenon out of his struggle. They are spontaneous outbursts of masses too long oppressed, or better yet, acts by unstable, untrustworthy elements which the leader of the movement has difficulty in controlling. Even in Europe, very few people admitted that the oppression of the colonized was so great, the disproportion of forces so overwhelming, that they had reached the point, whether morally correct or not, of using violent means voluntarily. The leftist colonizer tried in vain to explain actions which seemed incomprehensible, shocking and politically absurd. For example, the death of children and persons outside of the struggle, or even of colonized persons who, without being basically opposed, disapproved of some small aspect of the undertaking. At first he was so disconcerted that the best he could do was to deny such actions; for they would fit nowhere in his view of the problem. That it could be the cruelty of oppression which explained the blind fury of the reaction hardly seemed to be an argument to him; he can't approve acts of the colonized which he condemns in the colonizers because these are exactly why he condemns colonization.

Then, ~ Albert Memmi
Voluntary Action quotes by Albert Memmi
Nirvana is right here, in the midst of the turmoil of life. It is the state you find when you are no longer driven to live by compelling desires, fears, and social commitments, when you have found your center of freedom and can act by choice out of that. Voluntary action out of this center is the action of the bodhisattvas -- joyful participation in the sorrows of the world. You are not grabbed, because you have released yourself from the grabbers of fear, lust, and duties. ~ Joseph Campbell
Voluntary Action quotes by Joseph Campbell
Carpe diem: Enjoying the "instants" as they emerge. When living is too comfy or glitzy, it may not be easy to appreciate the humblest things in life. Being happy with the small gifts we receive can be a bliss, but we can, even more, expand it through voluntary action and exalting Voltaire's words, "today, I have decided to be happy." (« Is that all there is?") ~ Erik Pevernagie
Voluntary Action quotes by Erik Pevernagie
The State, in organizing security should not stifle incentive, opportunity, responsibility; in establishing a national minimum, it should leave room and encouragement for voluntary action by each individual to provide more than that minimum for himself and his family. ~ William Beveridge
Voluntary Action quotes by William Beveridge
The earth will continue to regenerate its life sources only as long as we and all the peoples of the world do our part to conserve its natural resources. It is a responsibility which every human being shares. Through voluntary action, each of us can join in building a productive land in harmony with nature. ~ Gerald R. Ford
Voluntary Action quotes by Gerald R. Ford
Despite the popular idea of anarchists as violent men, Anarchism is the one non-violent social philosophy. ... The function of the Anarchist is two-fold. By daily courage in non-cooperation with the tyrannical forces of the State and the Church, he helps to tear down present society; the Anarchist by daily cooperation with his fellows in overcoming evil with good-will and solidarity builds toward the anarchistic commonwealth which is formed by voluntary action with the right of secession. ~ Ammon Hennacy
Voluntary Action quotes by Ammon Hennacy
Every man aims at avoiding what causes him pain; the activities of government ultimately consist in the infliction of pain. All great achievements of mankind were the product of a spontaneous effort on the part of individuals; government substitutes coercion for voluntary action. ~ Ludwig Von Mises
Voluntary Action quotes by Ludwig Von Mises
In retrospect, the word "remote control" was ultimately a misnomer. What it finally did was to empower the more impulsive circuits of the brain in their conflict with the executive faculties, the parts with which we think we control ourselves and act rationally. It did this by making it almost effortless, practically nonvolitional, to redirect our attention - the brain had only to send one simple command to the finger in response to a cascade of involuntary cues. In fact, in the course of sustained channel surfing, the voluntary aspect of attention control may disappear entirely. The channel surfer is then in a mental state not unlike that of a newborn or a reptile. Having thus surrendered, the mind is simply jumping about and following whatever grabs it.

All this leads to a highly counterintuitive point: technologies designed to increase our control over our attention will sometimes have the very opposite effect. They open us up to a stream of instinctive selections, and tiny rewards, the sum of which may be no reward at all. And despite the complaints of the advertising industry, a state of distracted wandering was not really a bad one for the attention merchants; it was far better than being ignored. ~ Tim Wu
Voluntary Action quotes by Tim Wu
When you live a life devoid of ritual and convention, with honesty and self-effacement, then you are on the road to freedom. ~ Frederick Lenz
Voluntary Action quotes by Frederick Lenz
You want to prevent war, you talk, talk, but you also have to back it up with actions. ~ Steve Scalise
Voluntary Action quotes by Steve Scalise
It is difficult to see anything but infatuation in the destructive temperament which leads to the action ... that each of us is to rejoice that our several units are to be distinguished at death into countless millions of organisms; for such, it seems, is the latest revelation delivered from the fragile tripod of a modern Delphi. ~ William E. Gladstone
Voluntary Action quotes by William E. Gladstone
The beginning is half of every action. Greek Proverb ~ Leo Babauta
Voluntary Action quotes by Leo Babauta
Our actions must clothe us with an immortality loathsome or glorious. ~ Charles Caleb Colton
Voluntary Action quotes by Charles Caleb Colton
We need to create the institutions that will support the society we want to live in. The only answer is collective action. ~ Nick Harkaway
Voluntary Action quotes by Nick Harkaway
Character is developed one positive action at a time. Therefore nothing is actually trivial in our lives. To grow in character development, pay attention to seemingly trivial matters. Someone who grows from each minor life event will eventually reach high levels of character perfection. ~ Zelig Pliskin
Voluntary Action quotes by Zelig Pliskin
People have to be secure in order to transfer their money to you. Never forget that. How you make them secure is to not come at them from above (action, yang) telling them how marvelous the product is and how marvelous you are. Instead, work on their comfort zone first, keeping silent for the most part, leading things along effortlessly by asking questions (nonaction, yin). When you do get to talk, be sure to tell them that everything is cozy, safe, and secure. People need to hear that. Work on their positive energy, and tell them about the good fortune that is about to descend upon them in these exciting and positive times. Then, and only then, mention the dumb screws. ~ Stuart Wilde
Voluntary Action quotes by Stuart Wilde
Now for St. Francis nothing was ever in the background. We might say that his mind had no background, except perhaps that divine darkness out of which the divine love had called up every colored creature one by one. He saw everything as dramatic, distinct from its setting, not all of a piece like a picture but in action like a play. A bird went by him like an arrow; something with a story and a purpose, though it was a purpose of life and not a purpose of death. A bush could stop him like a brigand; and indeed he was as ready to welcome the brigand as the bush. ~ G.K. Chesterton
Voluntary Action quotes by G.K. Chesterton
It is injustice to determine the brutality of an action because of the victim or the criminal. ~ M.F. Moonzajer
Voluntary Action quotes by M.F. Moonzajer
Talk without the support of action means nothing. ~ DaShanne Stokes
Voluntary Action quotes by DaShanne Stokes
Don't wish away your problems. They need action, not wishful thinking ~ Bangambiki Habyarimana
Voluntary Action quotes by Bangambiki Habyarimana
Faith is illuminative, not operative; it does not force obedience, though it increases responsibility; it heightens guilt, but it does not prevent sin. The will is the source of action. ~ John Henry Newman
Voluntary Action quotes by John Henry Newman
Looking heavenward should be our lifelong endeavor. Some foolish persons turn their backs on the wisdom of God and follow the allurement of fickle fashion, the attraction of false popularity, and the thrill of the moment. Their course of conduct resembles the disastrous experience of Esau, who exchanged his birthright for a mess of pottage. And what are the results of such action? I testify to you today that turning away from God brings broken covenants, shattered dreams, and crushed hopes. Such a quagmire of quicksand I plead with you to avoid. You are of a noble birthright. Eternal life in the kingdom of our Father is your goal. ~ Thomas S. Monson
Voluntary Action quotes by Thomas S. Monson
May I just give you this word? Grace is not opposed to effort, it is opposed to earning. Earning is an attitude. Effort is an action. ~ Dallas Willard
Voluntary Action quotes by Dallas Willard
Being an action star is all I had ever hoped to be. I ultimately knew I would be an action star. ~ Steve Carell
Voluntary Action quotes by Steve Carell
Haven't you seen and heard that every word I seed for you is a feeling, and every thought I bloom bears a meaning?
Rivers of words, blending together for the same course, the action of my being:
my universe, your beauty. ~ Soar
Voluntary Action quotes by Soar
It is manifest that all government of action is to be gotten by knowledge, and knowledge best, by gathering many knowledges, which is reading. ~ Philip Sidney
Voluntary Action quotes by Philip Sidney
I assessed the situation in the right way. I do not regret my action. If I were to be thrown in that situation again, I'd still do the same. But… at times, I begin to hate myself, and this world, for being so cruel. I had to hurt my friend to save him and his homeland – our homeland. How hideous can that be, when there is no other way than violence? It is brutal. This world is brutal… ~ Tamuna Tsertsvadze
Voluntary Action quotes by Tamuna Tsertsvadze
Our mental conditions are simply the symbols in consciousness of the changes which take place automatically in the organism; ... to take an extreme illustration, the feeling we call volition is not the cause of a voluntary act, but the symbol of that state of the brain which is the immediate cause of that act. We are conscious automata. ~ Thomas Henry Huxley
Voluntary Action quotes by Thomas Henry Huxley
This isn't about love and hate, Helen says. It's about control. People don't sit down and read a poem to kill their child. They just want the child to
sleep. They just want to dominate. No matter how much you love someone, you still want to have your own way. The masochist bullies the sadist into
action. The most passive person is actually an aggressor. ~ Chuck Palahniuk
Voluntary Action quotes by Chuck Palahniuk
Here's how it works. Your immune system protects you from all kinds of nasty bugs and helps repair tissue that has been damaged by injury or surgery. When a problem develops somewhere, your body does the equivalent of calling 911. The alarm sounds, and the immune system springs into action. The first responders, the white blood cells, travel to the site of the problem. As weapons, some of the cells released a shower of powerful free radicals (called an oxidative burst) that aids in the destruction of invading microorganisms and damaged tissue. ~ Jed Diamond
Voluntary Action quotes by Jed Diamond
We can act instead of being acted upon. ~ Stephen Covey
Voluntary Action quotes by Stephen Covey
The most terrifying aspect of human health is our refusal to take steps to help ourselves and the fact that we are so often responsible for our own demise through lack of positive action. It makes me want to take a nap. ~ Lena Dunham
Voluntary Action quotes by Lena Dunham
To praise great actions is in some sense to share them. ~ Francois De La Rochefoucauld
Voluntary Action quotes by Francois De La Rochefoucauld
The wrongful arrest of tens of thousands of British Muslims after the September 11 attacks can be explained by the very poor intelligence the police had, and, just possibly, excused by the fact that a terrorist action in Britain linked to British Muslims would have been hugely damaging. ~ Geoff Mulgan
Voluntary Action quotes by Geoff Mulgan
It is terribly important to realize that the leap of faith is not so much a leap of thought as of action. For while in many matters it is first we must see then we will act; in matters of faith it is first we must do then we will know, first we will be and then we will see. One must, in short, dare to act wholeheartedly without absolute certainty. ~ William Sloane Coffin Jr.
Voluntary Action quotes by William Sloane Coffin Jr.
Action fiction is driven more by what than by who. Put that ticking nuclear suitcase under Manhattan, and it's relatively easy to create suspense. Literary fiction is driven more by who than by what. ~ Barry Eisler
Voluntary Action quotes by Barry Eisler
Can we walk for a bit?" he says.

"Yes, that would be lovely." But as I start getting up I lose my footing and slip and fall - right over the shingle. If I'd been doing a stunt in an action-adventure movie it would have probably looked spectacular but in the context of a romantic makeup it looks totally ridiculous.

"Are you OK?" Noah calls over to me.

I scramble up, my face red with embarrassment.

"That was an awesome body roll. I wanna try." Noah takes a step back before hurling himself over the shingle. He crashes into me and we land on the beach in a tangled heap. And as we laugh our heads off, the very last traces of tension between us disappear.

"I've missed you so much, Inciting Incident," he whispers.
- Zoe Sugg (Girl Online (Girl Online, #1)) ~ Zoe Sugg
Voluntary Action quotes by Zoe Sugg
There is only one necessary condition for the emergence of a new theatre, that the stage and auditorium should be open to the masses, should be able to contain a people and the actions of a people. ~ Romain Rolland
Voluntary Action quotes by Romain Rolland
I said, "Where's all that delivering God's supposed to do?"
He snorted. "You're right, the only deliverance is the one we get for ourselves. The Lord doesn't have any hands and feet but ours."
"That doesn't say much for the Lord."
"It doesn't say much for us, either. ~ Sue Monk Kidd
Voluntary Action quotes by Sue Monk Kidd
You are making a difference in Life. Whether or not you realize it, every action, every re-action, or every non-action impacts Life. The question to ask yourself is not whether you are making a difference, but whether that difference is positive or negative. ~ Donald L. Hicks
Voluntary Action quotes by Donald L. Hicks
It's funny, how for an entire lifetime we keep thinking 'How' will our life-partner look like, how will he be? How will he react to a particular situation? How will he get angry, and how will we love and pamper him? We have so many questions like if he will accept me the way I am? Or if I have to change for him? We all have made plans for our future, subconsciously. We don't exactly plan out everything with a pen and paper, it's something that happens automatically, just like an involuntary action. Whenever we are alone and our mood is good, we usually think about our life with our partner. The days and nights in his arms, and the time that we will reserve for him.

But when all that turns into reality, it's strikingly different. Everything that you thought, seems to be a joke, and life laughs at you from a distance! You are helpless and can't do anything about it, but have to accept it the way it is. You are totally caught into a web of dilemmas and problems before you realize that this is the time you waited for, and that this is the time you dreamt about! You have to make efforts, compromises, sacrifices and you have to change yourselves too sometimes to make things work.

You can never expect to get a partner exactly the way you thought or dreamt about. It's always different in reality and it's always tough to make both ends meet for a relationship to work, but you have to! It's your relationship, if you won't work for it, who else will? ~ Mehek Bassi
Voluntary Action quotes by Mehek Bassi
There is a theory that watching unbearable stories about other people lost in grief and rage is good for you - may cleanse you of your darkness. Do you want to go down to the pits of yourself all alone? Not much. What if an actor could do it for you? Isn't that why they are called actors? They act for you. You sacrifice them to action. And this sacrifice is a mode of deepest intimacy of you with your own life. Within it you watch [yourself] act out the present or possible organization of your nature. You can be aware of your own awareness of this nature as you never are at the moment of experience. The actor, by reiterating you, sacrifices a moment of his own life in order to give you a story of yours. ~ Anne Carson
Voluntary Action quotes by Anne Carson
Never mess with the Fez." - Heather Peaceout, Black Fez, Second Order ~ Richard Due
Voluntary Action quotes by Richard Due
The light that illumines it, and reveals to a man the cathedral of his soul, can be of many strengths – from a candle to a sun – but it burns on one fuel only: his integrity. The vision contains an element of eternity that has nothing to do with time, but everything to do with the width and breadth of his life. It is measurable, but indivisible. Betrayed, it will avenge itself. The action would contradict both it and a man's ineradicable knowledge of it, leaving him, should he survive the cataclysm, a mechanical, insensate manqué, drained of all future capacity for the sublime and earthly joy. Betrayed, it will become his worst nemesis, and he the impotent enemy of the implacable justice of its memory. Animate, it can make him maddeningly intolerant and insufferably imperial, together contemptuous of lesser souls and indifferent to them. It could cause him to say to others, should he be provoked to speak to them in his thoughts: You think in terms of nooks and crannies, of niches and pigeonholes, of ruffles and fringes; I think in terms of vistas and frescoes, of oceans and continents, peopled by gods, heroes, and myself. ~ Edward Cline
Voluntary Action quotes by Edward Cline
I don't understand writers who feel they shouldn't have to do any of the ordinary things of life, because I think that this is necessary: one has to keep in touch with that ... The ordinary action of taking a dress down to the dry cleaner's or spraying some plants infected with greenfly is a very sane and good thing to do. It brings one back, so to speak. It also brings the world back. ~ Nadine Gordimer
