The Utopians call those nations that come and ask magistrates from them Neighbours; but those to whom they have been of more particular service, Friends; and as all other nations are perpetually either making leagues or breaking them, they never enter into an alliance with any state. They think leagues are useless things, and believe that if the common ties of humanity do not knit men together, the faith of promises will have no great effect; and they are the more confirmed in this by what they see among the nations round about them, who are no strict observers of leagues and treaties. ~ Thomas More
Useless Things quotes by Thomas More
How many useless things one owns just because one has closets to put them in! ~ Marty Rubin
Useless Things quotes by Marty Rubin
As for the danger of alienating people with good intentions - well, one of the things that I learned from RaceFail (and also from general experience) was that people with good intentions are the ones to fear most. The overt racists are easy to deal with. You can spot them coming a mile away. But the well-intentioned people are scarier. They might not intend harm, but in most cases they haven't thought about all the racist (and other "-ist") messages they've absorbed from society. They haven't done the basic groundwork necessary to purge themselves of that passively-absorbed "-ism". So they say the most incredibly hurtful, self-absorbed, and utterly useless things, then compound the problem by getting upset when they're called on it. I liken these people to sleeper agents - they seem OK at first, but then they suddenly "activate" and stab you in the back, and then they come out of their fugue and freak because there's blood on their hands and they don't know how it got there and they refuse to accept that they're the ones who put it there, OMG, OMG. Meanwhile, you're on the floor bleeding out, unnoticed because of their histrionics.

The rage of RaceFail made many of these well-intentioned sleeper agents wake up. So while yes, I think the anger risked alienating some of them, I'm fine with that. They were always dangerous; I haven't lost anything by their alienation. The ones who wake up are a gain (or they will be, once they shift from "not causing harm" anymore ~ N.K. Jemisin
Useless Things quotes by N.K. Jemisin
Time and task were both disorienting, for if you were to remove everything from our lives that depends on electricity to function, homes and offices would become no more than the chambers and passages of limestone caves- simple shelter from wind and rain, far less useful than the first homes at Plymouth Plantation or a wigwam. No way to keep out cold, or heat, for long. No way to preserve food, or to cook it. The things that define us, quiet as rock outcrops - the dumb screens and dials, the senseless clicks of on/off switches- without their purpose, they lose the measure of their beauty and we are left alone in the dark with countless useless things. ~ Jane Brox
Useless Things quotes by Jane Brox
It is the useless things that make life worth living and that make life dangerous too: wine, love, art, beauty. Without them life is safe, but not worth bothering with. ~ Stephen Fry
Useless Things quotes by Stephen Fry
And, conversely, she went on to herself, sneering at the Grand Duke's palace, poverty is wasted on the poor, who never know how to make the best of things, are only the rich without money, are just as useless at looking after themselves, can't handle their cash just like the rich can't, always squandering it on bright, pretty, useless things in just the same way. ~ Angela Carter
Useless Things quotes by Angela Carter
God, I don't want to look at my phone anymore. I don't want this to be a distraction. My friends hear from You. I want to hear from You, too. I want to pray like they pray. I don't want to spend my time engaging in useless things. There is more for me to do. God, what am I supposed to do? What do you have for me? Let me focus on that, ~ Sunshine Rodgers
Useless Things quotes by Sunshine Rodgers
Maybe I am a coward. In facts, it is much better than open my big mouth and say useless things. ~ Shim Steward
Useless Things quotes by Shim Steward
He been a good man always, I think, but this tenderness was new. It was the tenderness of an old man who had been busy all his life but now had time to pay attention to useless things. But it was more than that . . . a suffering he neither complained of nor denied. ~ Wendell Berry
Useless Things quotes by Wendell Berry
The old man sang for a while, and Mora felt in her head the beginning of a long siege. A wilderness had crept up around a walled town, and the darkness of old woods and far-off places began to grow then, even within sight of where men walked together.
By this she meant in her heart that all the useless things one remembers well just before waking and forgets just after were in fact very important and perhaps all that stood now between herself and oblivion. ~ Jesse Ball
Useless Things quotes by Jesse Ball
Gold is the most useless thing in the world. I am not interested in money but in the things of which money is merely a symbol. ~ Henry Ford
Useless Things quotes by Henry Ford
When we were young, we understood all sweet things; and we could detect the sweets of a fairy story by an unerring science of our own. We never cared for such useless things as knowledge. We only cared for truth. ~ Rabindranath Tagore
Useless Things quotes by Rabindranath Tagore
Ignorant: a state of not knowing what a pronoun is, or how to find the square root of 27.4, and merely knowing childish and useless things like which of the seventy almost identical-looking species of the purple sea snake are the deadly ones, how to treat the poisonous pith of the Sago-sago tree to make a nourishing gruel, how to foretell the weather by the movements of the tree-climbing Burglar Crab, how to navigate across a thousand miles of featureless ocean by means of a piece of string and a small clay model of your grandfather, how to get essential vitamins from the liver of the ferocious Ice Bear, and other such trivial matters. It's a strange thing that when everyone becomes educated, everyone knows about the pronoun but no one knows about the Sago-sago. ~ Terry Pratchett
Useless Things quotes by Terry Pratchett
I know a lot about a few things - mostly useless things. ~ Mo Rocca
Useless Things quotes by Mo Rocca
Always thought being a writer would be one of the most useless things you could be in a zombie apocalypse, but it turns out arts and culture and storytelling is what helps us get through. Along with science, doctors, nurses, delivery people, farm workers and supermarket cashiers. ~ Lauren Beukes
Useless Things quotes by Lauren Beukes
He walked around all the useless things in the courtyard and touched them with his hands; for some reason, he wished that these would remember him, and love him. But he didn't believe they would. From childhood memories he knew how strange and sad it is after a long absence to see a familiar place again, for these unmoving objects have no memory and do not recognize the stirrings of a stranger's heart. ~ Andrei Platonov
Useless Things quotes by Andrei Platonov
ALWAYS FULL OF QUESTIONS ... How many times must I tell you, better to listen than to talk. But you're always talking ... asking useless things ... whatever for?"
"Because I want to know. ~ Arlene J. Chai
Useless Things quotes by Arlene J. Chai
O you mad, you superbly drunk!
If you kick open your doors and play the fool in public;
If you empty your bag in a night, and snap your fingers at prudence;
If you walk in curious paths and play with useless things;
Reck not rhyme or reason;
If you break the rudder in two unfurling your sails before the storm:
Then I will follow you, comrade, and be drunken and go to the dogs.

I have wasted my days and nights in the company of steady wise neighbors.
Much knowing has turned my hair grey, and much watching has made my sight dim.
For years I have gathered and heaped all scraps and fragments of things;
Crush them and dance upon them, and scatter them all to the winds!
For I know 'tis the height of wisdom to be drunken and go to the dogs.

Let all crooked scruples vanish, let me hopelessly lose my way.
Let a gust of wild giddiness come and sweep me away from my anchors.
The world is peopled with worthies, and workers useful and clever;
There are men who are easily the first, and men who come decently next:
Let them be happy and prosperous, and let me be foolishly futile.
For I know 'tis the end of all works to be drunken and go to the dogs.

I swear to surrender this moment all claim to the ranks of the sensible.
I let go my pride of learning and judgment of right and of wrong.
I'll shatter the vessel of memory, scattering the last drop of tears; < ~ Rabindranath Tagore
Useless Things quotes by Rabindranath Tagore
Thou canst remove out of the way many useless things among those which disturb thee, for they lie entirely in thy opinion; and thou wilt then gain for thyself ample space by comprehending the whole universe in thy mind, and by contemplating the eternity of time, and observing the rapid change of every several thing, how short is the time from birth to dissolution, and the illimitable time before birth as well as the equally boundless time after dissolution. All ~ Marcus Aurelius
Useless Things quotes by Marcus Aurelius
I'm fundamentally a busy person; I spend my time doing useful things and profoundly useless things! ~ Romola Garai
Useless Things quotes by Romola Garai
Sanity? Sorry, but I don't remember having such a useless thing in the first place. ~ Tite Kubo
Useless Things quotes by Tite Kubo
I know what it's like to be in one place and dream of another. I also know what it's like to feel that nostalgia is a fairly useless thing because it is stasis. ~ Mira Nair
Useless Things quotes by Mira Nair
Emperors are vain and useless things. ~ Scott Westerfeld
Useless Things quotes by Scott Westerfeld
Science only means knowledge; and for [Greek] ancients it did only mean knowledge. Thus the favorite science of the Greeks was Astronomy, because it was as abstract as Algebra ... We may say that the great Greek ideal was to have no use for useful things. The Slave was he who learned useful things; the Freeman was he who learned useless things. This still remains the ideal of many noble men of science, in the sense they do desire truth as the great Greeks desired it; and their attitude is an external protest against vulgarity of utilitarianism. ~ Gilbert K. Chesterton
Useless Things quotes by Gilbert K. Chesterton
Never act like you want it, darlin'. Act like you wouldn't own it if they paid you. Tell them it's dirty, broken ... a useless thing. Then make an offer. ~ Billie Letts
Useless Things quotes by Billie Letts
Even if all knowledge could be found in books, where it is mixed in with so many useless things and confusingly heaped in such large volumes, it would take longer to read those books than we have to live in this life and more effort to select the useful things than to find them oneself ~ Rene Descartes
Useless Things quotes by Rene Descartes
The only thing that stops God from sending another flood is that the first one was useless. ~ Nicolas Chamfort
Useless Things quotes by Nicolas Chamfort
If there was a National Tweaker Olympics, Oregon would bring home the gold in every category (Living in Squalor, Poisoning Your Neighbors, Developing Facial Scabs, Public Aggression, Theft of Useless Things, Taking Stuff Apart, and Crazy Talking). ~ Laurie Notaro
Useless Things quotes by Laurie Notaro
The harsh, useful things of the world, from pulling teeth to digging potatoes, are best done by men who are as starkly sober as so many convicts in the death-house, but the lovely and useless things, the charming and exhilarating things, are best done by men with, as the phrase is, a few sheets in the wind. ~ H.L. Mencken
Useless Things quotes by H.L. Mencken
True science is distinctively the study of useless things. For the useful things will get studied without the aid of scientific men. To employ these rare minds on such work is like running a steam engine by burning diamonds. ~ Charles Sanders Peirce
Useless Things quotes by Charles Sanders Peirce
Cats are great. They don't talk about useless things. Or do them. Nothing is cuter. They are something that don't exist in my world. They have pets over there as well ... but ... it doesn't quite compare. ~ Yana Toboso
Useless Things quotes by Yana Toboso
Love is a fragile, useless thing. It decomposes easily in the tropic heat. ~ Eric Gamalinda
Useless Things quotes by Eric Gamalinda
We get a deal o' useless things about us, only because we've got the money to spend. ~ George Eliot
Useless Things quotes by George Eliot
I'm me, and what the hell can I do about it!
...
I, the solemn investigator of useless things... ~ Fernando Pessoa
Useless Things quotes by Fernando Pessoa
Nothing is more unworthy of a wise man, or ought to trouble him more, than to have allowed more time for trifling, and useless things, than they deserve. ~ Plato
Useless Things quotes by Plato
Many people are busy trying to find better ways of doing things that should not have to be done at all. There is no progress in merely finding a better way to do a useless thing. ~ Henry Ford
Useless Things quotes by Henry Ford
Words are pretty, useless things - butterflies behind glass. You may feel warm and bright as you stare at their beauty but you'll walk away empty and cold, clutching nothing but the painful realization that you never really had anything at all. ~ Julie Johnson
Useless Things quotes by Julie Johnson
Tears are useless things; tiny droplets of salt infused water, insignificant and pitiful. ~ Pippa DaCosta
Useless Things quotes by Pippa DaCosta
We never cared for such useless things as knowledge. We only cared for truth. And our unsophisticated little hearts knew well where the Crystal Palace of Truth lay and how to reach it. But to-day we are expected to write pages of facts, while the truth is simply this: "There was a king. ~ Rabindranath Tagore
Useless Things quotes by Rabindranath Tagore
The world needed more fireworks- especially now that there was going to be a shortage of beautiful, useless things. ~ Scott Westerfeld
Useless Things quotes by Scott Westerfeld
On the dresser was a row of blue-and-white jars that weren't very useful for anything. They'd been left to her mother by an elderly aunt, and she was proud of them because they looked nice but were completely useless. There was little room on the farm for useless things that looked nice, so they were treasured. ~ Terry Pratchett
Useless Things quotes by Terry Pratchett
She knew from listening to her grandmother that old age was made up of such remembrances of youth.
But she didn't want to recall things. She wanted to live things - or as a compromise, re-live rather than reminisce.
She decided to fix this time in her life exactly the way it was this instant. Perhaps that way she could hold on to it as a living thing and not have it become something called a memory. ~ Betty Smith
Useless Things quotes by Betty Smith
How strange
it is. For perfect things in poetry do not seem strange;
they seem inevitable. And so we hardly thank the
writer for his pains. ~ Jorge Luis Borges
Useless Things quotes by Jorge Luis Borges
I always have music. I love it to be very upbeat. When you're having drinks, I like something like Cesaria Evora. During dinner, I like the much more traditional - old Frank Sinatra and things like that. ~ Ina Garten
Useless Things quotes by Ina Garten
I'm often asked how I define "success." It's an overused term, but I fundamentally view this elusive beast as a combination of two things - achievement and appreciation. One isn't enough:
Achievement without appreciation makes you ambitious but miserable.
Appreciation without achievement makes you unambitious but happy. ~ Timothy Ferriss
Useless Things quotes by Timothy Ferriss
It's hard to know where to start. Things have been a mess for so many years that trying to pin down a starting point is like trying to figure out where your skin starts. All you can ever really know is that it's wrapped around you, sometimes a little tighter than you'd like.
But clearly there have been some mistakes. Bad ones. You can tell that just by looking at him. ~ Jonathan Tropper
Useless Things quotes by Jonathan Tropper
My affection for you does not depend on those small things.'
Affection? To hear him admit it, to actually utter words of love, however understated, astonished me. ~ Peter Goldsworthy
Useless Things quotes by Peter Goldsworthy
I always knew that there were huge opportunities for me, and that I had a lot of potential to do a lot of different things, but I also knew it was about my execution and my application of skills. ~ T.I.
Useless Things quotes by T.I.
A lot of times, the reason we struggle to feel and receive the love of God - to see ourselves as His beloved, adopted children - is because we're not pursuing in our everyday lives those things His Word describes as being valuable and significant. ~ Matt Chandler
Useless Things quotes by Matt Chandler
When I look at my life I realise that the mistakes I have made, the things I really regret, were not errors of judgement but failures of feeling. ~ Jeanette Winterson
Useless Things quotes by Jeanette Winterson
The fact is that, unless we're with friends or family, we're all like talking dolls, endlessly repeating the same trite and tiresome lines: "Hello, how are you?" "Hot enough out there?" "Don't work too "hard!"
I'm often misunderstood at my supermarket in Sussex, not because of my accent but because I tend to deviate from the script.

Cashier: Hello, how are you this evening?
Me: Has your house ever been burgled?
Cashier: What?
Me: Your house - has anyone ever broken into it and stolen things ~ David Sedaris
Useless Things quotes by David Sedaris
I love comedy with a passion, and I hope that shows in my work. I would never want to move an inch away from comedy. What I want to do is continue to grow and extend myself, so if anything, I'm adding things on. ~ Darren Boyd
Useless Things quotes by Darren Boyd
One of the wonderful things about human beings is that we can and often do change, not always gracefully and not often willingly, but occasionally just like that, in a snap, we change. Sometimes slowly, sometimes for no reason at all or maybe an hundred and fifty. ~ Melissa Gilbert
Useless Things quotes by Melissa Gilbert
First, I was an idealist (that was early - fools are born, not made, you know); next I was a realist; now I am a pessimist, and, by Jove! if things get much worse I'll become a humorist. ~ Ellen Glasgow
Useless Things quotes by Ellen Glasgow
Regrets are the last words you speak to your loved ones when you die and the one thing we all fear when we live. I'd rather regret the things I've done and said than regret the things I haven't done or said. It is all the experiences and people you missed out on in life that you will feel the most regretful for in the end. God will forgive you of your mistakes, but there is nothing to forgive if you have never even tried, done or said anything that made a difference in your life or others. ~ Shannon L. Alder
Useless Things quotes by Shannon L. Alder
He liked to play chess and do intelligent things, and I was a serious drinker and nonthinker. ~ Warren G. Harding
Useless Things quotes by Warren G. Harding
It is amazing but true that it is easy for any of us to rebuke someone else who is intending to do something evil and say, "Don't do that - that's a sin!" And yet it is difficult for us to say the same thing to ourselves. The reason is that saying it to ourselves requires a movement of the will, but saying it to someone else requires only a low level of thought based on things we have heard. ~ Emanuel Swedenborg
Useless Things quotes by Emanuel Swedenborg
God alone fully understands what each one of us needs; we make mistakes continually and pray for things which would be harmful to us if we received them. Afterwards we see our mistakes and realize that God is good and wise in not giving us these things, even though we plead ever so earnestly for them. ~ Ole Hallesby
Useless Things quotes by Ole Hallesby
Without ethics, everything happens as if we were all five billion passengers on a big machinery and nobody is driving the machinery. And it's going faster and faster, but we don't know where. ~ Jacques-Yves Cousteau
Useless Things quotes by Jacques-Yves Cousteau
Learning to let things go is key for a good quality of living. ~ Christina Perri
Useless Things quotes by Christina Perri
On the other hand, one has to confess that there is a certain pleasure in the casual observation of things that do not matter. ~ George Allardice Riddell
Useless Things quotes by George Allardice Riddell
How do I get to Broadway?...I want to get to the center of things. ~ John Dos Passos
Useless Things quotes by John Dos Passos
I hate the idea of natural. For example, I prefer gardens to wild nature. I like to see the human touch. High heels are a complete invention - an extravagance. They're far from natural, but it's the impracticality that I adore. I prefer the useless to the useful, the sophisticated to the natural. ~ Christian Louboutin
Useless Things quotes by Christian Louboutin
All things, and man as well, should be like nature, without measure. ~ Hans Arp
Useless Things quotes by Hans Arp
It is a new Declaration of Independence: No longer do we hold these truths to be self-evident, we hold all truths to be self-evident, even the ones that aren't true. All things are knowable and every opinion on any subject is as good as any other. ~ Tom Nichols
Useless Things quotes by Tom Nichols
Defeat is the end of the way you did things before.
But it's also the very beginning of the way you do things from now, on.
You are wiser now.
Use your wisdom and step forward into creating your brand new wonderful life ~ Doe Zantamata
Useless Things quotes by Doe Zantamata
I think I'm really lucky that the things I'm able to love - people, animals - it's like the more you put yourself into it, the more you get out of it. ~ Wayne Coyne
Useless Things quotes by Wayne Coyne
If we try to complicate our lives, developing clever plans and ambitions, we lose sight of the way in which small, insignificant things actually hold the key to what we seek. ~ Yi-Ping Ong
Useless Things quotes by Yi-Ping Ong
Our lives are made up of many things, not just one. Many answers, not just one. It's men that want one answer for everything. They're always making laws, as though they could make one law that would be just in all cases. They can't. They never have. I think men get derailed, sometime during their growing up. Instead of settling for what's honest and real and sort of thoughtful, they go off on these quests. They go strutting and crowing, waving their weapons and shouting their battle cries. They say they're seeking something higher, but it always seems to end in pain, doesn't it? ~ Sheri S. Tepper
Useless Things quotes by Sheri S. Tepper
About things on which the public thinks long it commonly attains to think right. ~ Samuel Johnson
Useless Things quotes by Samuel Johnson
And so we have come full circle, and return to the essential question: who are you? From a scientific perspective, you are miraculous. You are stardust. You contain the same energy and matter that created the universe 13 billion years ago. You were once that energy - inside the infinitesimally small point of light that began all of life. Everything around you, everything you can see, touch, and taste, is made of this matter, this same universal energy: the water that shines, the tree that reaches, the bird in flight, the grass that grows. The saints and sages across the ages said it this way: you are brothers and sisters with all of creation. If who you are and how things work are one and the same, then who you are is love. ~ Tom Shadyac
Useless Things quotes by Tom Shadyac
Before this country came on the scene, for thousands of years people did things the same way. Within 200 years of the advent of this nation, men were walking on the moon, and I want us to recognize this is the kind of people that we are. We're creative with a lot of ingenuity and a lot of energy. ~ Ben Carson
Useless Things quotes by Ben Carson
The myth works to make the very real things people don't want to look at visible for them. ~ Alexander Chee
Useless Things quotes by Alexander Chee
I'm not good with the low-level unexplained. I worry at such things. I'm quite relaxed about the great mysteries of the universe; when it comes to the existence of God, for example, I figure that, as with a good episode of Inspector Morse, I'll find out what's going on eventually. ~ David Mitchell
Useless Things quotes by David Mitchell
I like all things natural, and I love being Indian. So clothes-wise, I love wearing Indian. Does my wearing a salwar kameez instead of a dress make me less of an actor, less of a person? ~ Vidya Balan
Useless Things quotes by Vidya Balan
If you think too much about things, life sometimes just passes you by. ~ David Baldacci
Useless Things quotes by David Baldacci
To succeed in life, you need three things: a wishbone, a backbone and a funnybone. ~ Reba McEntire
Useless Things quotes by Reba McEntire
Then why do they come?"
Buonarroti shrugged his shoulders.
"Because things are in such a bad way in their homeland, they're ready to flee into a black hole in space, to a concentration camp, to the Sargasso Sea of international criminal brigands."
"Between the devil and the deep blue sea," said the new consul, demonstrating his knowledge of international idioms. ~ Vladimir Lorchenkov
