After moving his family from Yakima to Paradise, California, in 1958, he enrolled at Chico State College. There, he began an apprenticeship under the soon-to-be-famous John Gardner, the first "real writer" he had ever met. It might be useful here to say a word about Beckett, as a link between the two stages, and as illustrating the shift towards schism. Anyone seeking a supportive metaphysical community should first ask themselves if their ability to think independently is being compromised.
