Oh my research. Well, I got an English Degree. And I got that degree in a certain time/at a certain place. If you add UC Berkeley + 1984 the other side of the = is "new historian" meaning that I studied with and was influenced by those who were interested in how the personal shaped the political (and literary), how science and literature might interact, and what the body got to do with it. ~ Laura Mullen
Uc Berkeley quotes by Laura Mullen
My parents met when they were graduate students at UC Berkeley in the 1960s. They were both active in the civil-rights movement. ~ Kamala Harris
Uc Berkeley quotes by Kamala Harris
My filmmaking style of remixing came out of necessity. When I was a film theory student at UC Berkeley in the early 1990s, there were no film production facilities. The only way I learned to tell stories on film was by re-cutting and splicing together celluloid of old movies, early animated films, home films, sound slug - anything I could get my hands on. ~ Elisa Kreisinger
Uc Berkeley quotes by Elisa Kreisinger

My dad worked for a generator company and then UC Berkeley, and my mom was as a dental hygienist and then eventually a history teacher. My uncles and aunts, all of them are elementary school teachers or scientists. ~ Cary Fukunaga
Uc Berkeley quotes by Cary Fukunaga

Uc Berkeley quotes by Simon Singh
It isn't that information is exploding, but accessibility is. There's just about as much information this year as there was last year; it's been growing at a steady rate. It's just that now it's so much more accessible because of information technology. The consensus is that a Web crawler could get to a terabyte of publicly accesible HTML. A terabyte is about a million books. the UC Berkeley library has about 8 million books, and the Library of Congress has 20 million books. ~ Hal Varian
Uc Berkeley quotes by Hal Varian
The early 1960s, when I started my graduate studies at UC Berkeley, were a period of experimental supremacy and theoretical impotence. ~ David Gross
Uc Berkeley quotes by David Gross
I was a grad student at UC Berkeley when I bought my Apple II and it suddenly because a lot more interesting than school. ~ Andy Hertzfeld
Uc Berkeley quotes by Andy Hertzfeld
Mostly, we sat around while Tina Messinger, one of the first humans to graduate with an advanced degree in Undead Studies from UC Berkeley, pontificated about us to us. Tina saw herself as a sort of therapist/spirit guide/guidance counselor, but she spent far too much time explaining how well qualified she was to understand our undead point of view. I didn't think it would be helpful to point out that if she were truly well qualified, she would know how annoying we found it to have our point of view humansplained to us. ~ Molly Harper
Uc Berkeley quotes by Molly Harper
My sister is a good story of resiliency. She had a full ride at UC Davis, but she left school to go to the Philippines - and then she decided to go back to school in her 40s, which surprised me. She went to UC Berkeley, and I think she was one of two African Americans in her class at Haas. She's really impressive. ~ Chili Davis
Uc Berkeley quotes by Chili Davis
I went to UC Berkeley for college, and it was during the period when the whole punk movement was happening. ~ Susanna Hoffs
Uc Berkeley quotes by Susanna Hoffs
A degree from UC Berkeley will never change the fact that I cannot understand my grandfather when he asks for more coffee." - Esther G. Belin (Navajo) from In the Cycle of the Whirl. L ~ MariJo Moore
Uc Berkeley quotes by MariJo Moore

John Yoo, UC Berkeley Constitutional Lawyer, novelist, and public servant ~ Richard Theodor Kusiolek
Uc Berkeley quotes by Richard Theodor Kusiolek
When I was at the University of California at Berkeley, I went to some classes that must have had more than four hundred students in them. I almost always sat in the far back of the auditorium so I could read the newspaper. I remember that I stayed late one day to ask the professor a question, and when I got up to him, all I could think to myself was, 'So this is what the professor looks like. ~ Stephan Pastis
Uc Berkeley quotes by Stephan Pastis
I missed my entrance in a production of 'Blade to the Heat' at Thick Description in San Francisco. I came into the scene very late and hugged the punching bag. I had no idea what to do! Unfortunately, that mishap was recorded for archives at UC Berkeley. It goes down in history. ~ Colman Domingo
Uc Berkeley quotes by Colman Domingo
...I began pulling out old pictures and yearbooks from our Los Angeles high schools and UC Berkeley. Suddenly there we were, thousands of trim-haired, neatly-dressed, conservative-looking youngsters, with perky, forced smiles, encased in identical inch by inch-and-a-quarter boxes for our children to snicker at. Only they did not snicker.
"Mom, this isn't the 60s, is it? ~ Elise Frances Miller
Uc Berkeley quotes by Elise Frances Miller
When I came back I joined a black church in Oakland and that made me feel more at home, a bit like being connected to India. It felt funny to be around so many white people when I came back to the United States. It still bothers me. One of the things I liked living in Hawaii years later was the racial complexity of it. I remember that at the time when Sucheng and I got married--we met as graduate students at Berkeley and have been married almost forty years--one of the first houses we bought was in a Black neighborhood in west Berkeley and we didn't quite notice how uniformly Black it was until some weeks later. I said to Sucheng, "You know, we're the only white people in this neighborhood." And she looked at me and said: "Speak for yourself, honkie! ~ Mark Juergensmeyer
Uc Berkeley quotes by Mark Juergensmeyer
What's more, I live in Berkeley, California. If princesses had infiltrated OUR little retro hippie hamlet, imagine what was going on places where women actually shaved their legs! ~ Peggy Orenstein
Uc Berkeley quotes by Peggy Orenstein
It took me a couple of years after I got out of Berkeley before I dared to start writing. That academic mind-set - which was kind of shallow in my case anyway - had begun to fade. ~ Joan Didion
Uc Berkeley quotes by Joan Didion
The cartooning was always just an abstraction. It was an income. It was making me famous. It was allowing me to go and do other things that I'd wanted to do. ~ Berkeley Breathed
Uc Berkeley quotes by Berkeley Breathed
He's writing his name in water," I said. "What's that?" It was the half-regretful term - borrowed from the headstone of John Keats - that Crabtree used to describe his own and others' failure to express a literary gift through any actual writing on paper. Some of them, he said, just told lies; others wove plots out of the gnarls and elf knots of their lives and then followed them through to resolution. That had always been Crabtree's chosen genre - thinking his way into an attractive disaster and then attempting to talk his way out, leaving no record and nothing to show for his efforts but a reckless reputation and a small dossier in the files of the Berkeley and New York City police departments. ~ Michael Chabon
Uc Berkeley quotes by Michael Chabon
Westward the course of empire takes its way; The four first acts already past, A fifth shall close the drama with the day: Time's noblest offspring is the last. ~ George Berkeley
Uc Berkeley quotes by George Berkeley

Uc Berkeley quotes by Gene Luen Yang
Berkeley , Hume, Kant , Fichte , Hegel , James , Bergson all are united in one earnest attempt, the attempt to reinstate man with his high spiritual claims in a place of importance in the cosmic scheme. ~ David Hume
Uc Berkeley quotes by David Hume
What doubts, what hypotheses, what labyrinths of amusement, what fields of disputation, what an ocean of false learning, may be avoided by that single notion of immaterialism! ~ George Berkeley
Uc Berkeley quotes by George Berkeley
If the fact that brutes abstract not be made the distinguishing property of that sort of animal, I fear a great many of those that pass for men must be reckoned into their number. ~ George Berkeley
Uc Berkeley quotes by George Berkeley
I went to UC Santa Cruz, overlooking the Bay of Monterey and Santa Cruz, in 1969. Back then, the city was part-hippie, part-surfer, but mostly retired chicken farmer. ~ Clive Sinclair
Uc Berkeley quotes by Clive Sinclair
I remember the excitement of finding a great pancake recipe in 'Gourmet.' It felt as if it were mine. And it was Berkeley, of course - everybody cooked together. Cooking is what one did. ~ Mona Simpson
Uc Berkeley quotes by Mona Simpson
A ray of imagination or of wisdom may enlighten the universe, and glow into remotest centuries. ~ George Berkeley
Uc Berkeley quotes by George Berkeley
A man needs no arguments to make him discern and approve what is beautiful: it strikes at first sight, and attracts without a reason. And as this beauty is found in the shape and form of corporeal things, so also is there analogous to it a beauty of another kind, an order, a symmetry, and comeliness in the moral world. And as the eye perceiveth the one, so the mind doth by a certain interior sense perceive the other, which sense, talent, or faculty, is ever quickest and purest in the noblest minds. ~ George Berkeley
Uc Berkeley quotes by George Berkeley
'Time's noblest offspring is the last.' This line of Bishop Berkeley's expresses the real cause of the belief in progress in the animal creation. ~ Charles Lyell
Uc Berkeley quotes by Charles Lyell
When I first started teaching at Berkeley in 1958, I could not announce that I was gay to anybody, though probably quite a few of my fellow teachers knew. ~ Thom Gunn
Uc Berkeley quotes by Thom Gunn
Berkeley hackers liked to see themselves as rebels against soulless corporate empires. ~ Eric S. Raymond
Uc Berkeley quotes by Eric S. Raymond
Negative humor is forgotten immediately. It's the stuff that makes us feel better about our lives that lives long. Much more satisfying. Enter children's books. ~ Berkeley Breathed
Uc Berkeley quotes by Berkeley Breathed
It would much conduce to the public benefit, if, instead of discouraging free-thinking, there was erected in the midst of this free country a dianoetic academy, or seminary for free-thinkers, provided with retired chambers, and galleries, and shady walks and groves, where, after seven years spent in silence and meditation, a man might commence a genuine free-thinker, and from that time forward, have license to think what he pleased, and a badge to distinguish him from counterfeits. ~ George Berkeley
Uc Berkeley quotes by George Berkeley
The world is like a board with holes in it, and the square men have got into the round holes, and the round into the square. ~ George Berkeley
Uc Berkeley quotes by George Berkeley
As he walked up past the red and green tennis courts in east Berkeley and saw the swing of the women's hair in the breeze, the crisp strokes that sent the ball over the net like a little bone-white planetoid, it occurred to him that there was still a last chance for a pair of heavenly arms to reach out to him and save him. ~ William T. Vollmann
Uc Berkeley quotes by William T. Vollmann
this is a girl who did drugs, who fucked her high school teacher, who chose Berkeley over Stanford. Maybe she really could be one of us. ~ Jeffrey Toobin
Uc Berkeley quotes by Jeffrey Toobin
I went to UC Davis because I wanted to be a vet. It's a great profession if it's right for you, but it's memorizing the bones and the muscles, and I am terrible at stuff like that. Also, there's a lot of blood and gore involved. ~ Bonnie Bassler
Uc Berkeley quotes by Bonnie Bassler
When I came to Berkeley, I met all these Nobel laureates and I got to know that they were regular people. They were very smart and very motivated and worked very hard, but they were still humans, whereas before they were kind of mythical creatures to me. ~ George Smoot
Uc Berkeley quotes by George Smoot
The table I write on I say exists ... meaning thereby that if I was in my study I might perceive it, or that some other spirit actually does perceive it. ~ George Berkeley
Uc Berkeley quotes by George Berkeley
I'll confess right here that I secretly wish I'd have drawn a strip about a little boy with a fake tiger, going for adventures throughout the universe in spaceships of his imagination. ~ Berkeley Breathed
Uc Berkeley quotes by Berkeley Breathed
But, say you, surely there is nothing easier than for me to imagine trees, for instance, in a park [ ... ] and nobody by to perceive them. [ ... ] The objects of sense exist only when they are perceived; the trees therefore are in the garden [ ... ] no longer than while there is somebody by to perceive them. ~ George Berkeley
Uc Berkeley quotes by George Berkeley
All men have opinions, but few think. ~ George Berkeley
Uc Berkeley quotes by George Berkeley
Religion is the centre which unites, and the cement which connects the several parts of members of the political body. ~ George Berkeley
Uc Berkeley quotes by George Berkeley
Another example of how a metaphor can create new meaning for us came about by accident. An Iranian student, shortly after his arrival in Berkeley, took a seminar on metaphor from one of us. Among the wondrous things that he found in Berkeley was an expression that he heard over and over and understood as a beautifully sane metaphor. The expression was "the solution of my problems" - which he took to be a large volume of liquid, bubbling and smoking, containing all of your problems, either dissolved or in the form of precipitates, with catalysts constantly dissolving some problems (for the time being) and precipitating out others. He was terribly disillusioned to find that the residents of Berkeley had no such chemical metaphor in mind. And well he might be, for the chemical metaphor is both beautiful and insightful. It gives us a view of problems as things that never disappear utterly and that cannot be solved once and for all. All of your problems are always present, only they may be dissolved and in solution, or they may be in solid form. The best you can hope for is to find a catalyst that will make one problem dissolve without making another one precipitate out. [...] The CHEMICAL metaphor gives us a new view of human problems. It is appropriate to the experience of finding that problems which we once thought were "solved" turn up again and again. The CHEMICAL metaphor says that problems are not the kind of things that can be made to disappear forever. To treat them as th ~ George Lakoff
Uc Berkeley quotes by George Lakoff
I can't help but have my sights set on Scorsese, Cohen Brothers and Spike Jones. ~ Xander Berkeley
Uc Berkeley quotes by Xander Berkeley
They hired a PhD student from the statistics department at the University of California at Berkeley to help them, but he quit after they asked him to study the market for pork belly futures. "It turned out that he was a vegetarian," said Jamie. "He had a problem with capitalism in general, but the pork bellies pushed him over the edge. ~ Michael Lewis
Uc Berkeley quotes by Michael Lewis
If nothing is serious anymore, then there's nothing to satirize. ~ Berkeley Breathed
Uc Berkeley quotes by Berkeley Breathed
The only things we perceive are our perceptions. ~ George Berkeley
Uc Berkeley quotes by George Berkeley
He came to the University of California, Berkeley, with many aspirations, but as often happens, life got in the way, and his best laid plans turned into dreams for another day. As he gazed over the building immediately in the foreground, he could see Sather Tower on Berkeley's campus, known for resembling Campanile di San Marco in Venice. ~ Rob Thomas
