Towers' is the name of the dormitory that I lived in in college; it's made up of these two towers – North and South – my girlfriend lived in one and I lived in the other. It's about falling in love, but also about what happens when you've long fallen out of love and those reminders are still there. You drive by them, these two buildings, and you look, and you realise that we really built that up. That we really built that love into these things, and for a long time afterward looking at them really made me feel sad; to see these empty buildings that I don't go in to anymore. But then, as time goes on, they start to become kind of joyous in their own way: you can look at them and think 'that love was great and these buildings still stand tall'. But there's also an element of the fact that they're just buildings – they're gonna fall down one day, and they're not that important because there's new love in your life and you've got to break things down that get built up. ~ Justin Vernon
Two Towers quotes by Justin Vernon
Most of 'Let the Great World Spin' is centered on the day in 1974 when Philippe Petit walked on a tightrope between the two towers of the World Trade Center, creating an astonishing spectacle that intersects with the lives of many of the novel's multiple protagonists. ~ Susan Barker
Two Towers quotes by Susan Barker
How shall a man judge what to do in such times?'
'As he ever has judged,' said Aragorn. 'Good and ill have not changed since yesteryear ... It is a man's part to discern them, as much in th Golden Wood as in his own house. ~ J.R.R. Tolkien
Two Towers quotes by J.R.R. Tolkien
Gandalf: Three hundred lives of men I have walked this earth and now I have no time. ~ J.R.R. Tolkien
Two Towers quotes by J.R.R. Tolkien
Jace and I had been like that, two towers, soaring through the sky side by side, looking and feeling indestructible while we were together. ~ Natalie Valdes
Two Towers quotes by Natalie Valdes
Hobbits always so polite, yes! O nice hobbits! Smeagol brings them up secret ways that nobody else could find. Tired he is, thirsty he is, yes thirsty; and he guides them and he searches for paths, and they saw sneak, sneak. Very nice friends, O yes my precious, very nice."
Sam felt a little remorseful, but not yet trustful.
"Sorry," he said. "I'm sorry, but you startled me out of my sleep. And I shouldn't have been sleeping, and that made me sharp. But Mr. Frodo, he's that tired, I asked him to have a wink; and well, that's how it is. Sorry. But where HAVE you been to?"
"Sneaking," said Gollum, and the green glint did not leave his eyes.

...

"Hullo, Smeagol!" Frodo said. "Found any food? Have you had any rest?"
"No food, no rest, nothing for Smeagol," said Gollum. "He's a sneak."
"Don't take names to yourself, Smeagol," Frodo said. "It's unwise, whether they are true or false."
"Smeagol has to take what's given to him," answered Gollum. "He was given that name by kind Master Samwise, the hobbit that knows so much. ~ J.R.R. Tolkien
Two Towers quotes by J.R.R. Tolkien
Air buffeted him and he heard the heavy flap of wings. Rake smiled. "Silanah," he said softly, knowing she would hear him. The red dragon slipped between two towers and banked, returning to his position. "I know you sense the Demon Lord's presence, Silanah. You would help me in this. I know, I know." He shook his head. "Return to Moon's Spawn, dear friend. This battle is mine. Yours is done. But know this: if I fail, you may seek to avenge my death." Silanah swept overhead and loosed a thin wail. "Go home," Rake whispered. The red dragon cried again, then swung westward and rose through the night air. ~ Steven Erikson
Two Towers quotes by Steven Erikson
Let go! Gollum,' he said. 'This is Sting. You have seen it before once upon a time. Let go, or you'll feel it this time! I'll cut your throat ~ J.R.R. Tolkien
Two Towers quotes by J.R.R. Tolkien
Let him go, you filth! Let him go! You will not touch him again! ~ J.R.R. Tolkien
Two Towers quotes by J.R.R. Tolkien
I've been spending this last month trying to find four outfits to wear to the different premieres of The Two Towers. It's hard work. ~ Liv Tyler
Two Towers quotes by Liv Tyler
I wonder,' said Frodo. 'It's my doom, I think, to go to that Shadow yonder, so that a way will be found. But will good or evil show it to me? ~ J.R.R. Tolkien
Two Towers quotes by J.R.R. Tolkien
Now he tried to find strength to tear himself away and go on a lonely journey
for vengeance. If once he could go, his anger would bear him down all the roads of the world, pursuing, until he had him at last: Gollum. Then Gollum would die in a corner. ~ J.R.R. Tolkien
Two Towers quotes by J.R.R. Tolkien
But at some point it becomes obvious that, ultimately, the adventure of faith is the most sensible thing to do, and in fact the only thing worth doing. As Sam says toward the end of The Two Towers, no one remembers the tales in which the characters give up and turn back. Great and heroic deeds remain undone if no one leaps into the dark to do them. That's true when it comes to faith, too. You can't play a meaningful role in the great story by playing it safe. Once you hit the road, there is no going back to life as it was before. When Jesus asks His disciples if they will leave him to, Peter says, "Lord to whom will we go?" (verse 68). It's either walk with Jesus, unsafe as it seems sometimes, or go home. ~ Sarah Arthur
Two Towers quotes by Sarah Arthur
In Dwimordene,in Lorien
Seldom have walked the feet of Men,
Few mortal eyes have seen the light
That lies there ever, long and bright.
Galadriel!Galadriel!
Clear is the water of your well;
White is the star in your white hand;
Unmarred,unstained is leaf and land
In Dwimordene,in Lorien
More fair than thoughts of Mortal Men. ~ J.R.R. Tolkien
Two Towers quotes by J.R.R. Tolkien
Have we ridden forth to victory, only to stand at last amazed by an old liar with honey on his forked tongue? So would the trapped wolf speak to the hounds, if he could. ~ J.R.R. Tolkien
Two Towers quotes by J.R.R. Tolkien
The wise speak only of what they know ~ J.R.R. Tolkien
Two Towers quotes by J.R.R. Tolkien
I think 'Two Towers' is a completely distinct film from 'Fellowship of the Ring' or 'Return of the King.' I think that you can watch them as a group and watch how the story evolves, but I think each one was made in its own entirety, and each one has its own palate of sound and music and color and characterization. ~ Howard Shore
Two Towers quotes by Howard Shore
There is no curse in Elvish, Entish, or the tongues of Men for this treachery. ~ J.R.R. Tolkien
Two Towers quotes by J.R.R. Tolkien
The transept belfry and the two towers were to him three great cages, the birds in which, taught by him, would sing for him alone. Yet it was these same bells which had made him deaf; but mothers are often fondest of the child who has made them suffer most. ~ Victor Hugo
Two Towers quotes by Victor Hugo
Fair speech may hide a foul heart. ~ J.R.R. Tolkien
Two Towers quotes by J.R.R. Tolkien
I fear I am beyond your comprehension. - Gandalf the White ~ J.R.R. Tolkien
Two Towers quotes by J.R.R. Tolkien
Don't put a lump of rock under my elbow again! ~ J.R.R. Tolkien
Two Towers quotes by J.R.R. Tolkien
There are some things that it is better to begin than to refuse, even though the end may be dark. ~ J.R.R. Tolkien
Two Towers quotes by J.R.R. Tolkien
The enemy? His sense of duty was no less than yours, I deem. You wonder what his name is, where he came from. And if he was really evil at heart. What lies or threats led him on this long march from home. If he would not rather have stayed there in peace. War will make corpses of us all. ~ J.R.R. Tolkien
Two Towers quotes by J.R.R. Tolkien
And sometimes you didn't want to know the end ... because how could the end be happy? ~ J.R.R. Tolkien
Two Towers quotes by J.R.R. Tolkien
I don't know how long we shall take to - to finish,' said Frodo. 'We were miserably delayed in the hills. But Samwise Gamgee, my dear hobbit - indeed, Sam my dearest hobbit, friend of friends - I do not think we need give thought to what comes after that. To do the job as you put it - what hope is there that we ever shall? And if we do, who knows what will come of that? If the One goes into the Fire, and we are at hand? I ask you, Sam, are we ever likely to need bread again? I think not. If we can nurse our limbs to bring us to Mount Doom, that is all we can do. More than I can, I begin to feel. ~ J.R.R. Tolkien
Two Towers quotes by J.R.R. Tolkien
Hullo!" said Merry. "So that's what is bothering you? Now, Pippin my lad, don't forget Gildor's saying - the one Sam used to quote: Do not meddle in the affairs of Wizards, for they are subtle and quick to anger."
"But our whole life for months has been one long meddling in the affairs of Wizards," said Pippin. "I should like a bit of information as well as danger. I should like a look at that ball."
"Go to sleep!" said Merry. "You'll get information enough, sooner or later. My dear Pippin, no Took ever beat a Brandybuck for inquisitiveness; but is it this time, I ask you?"
"All right! What's the harm in my telling you what I should like: a look at that stone? I know I can't have it, with old Gandalf sitting on it, like a hen on an egg. But it doesn't help much to get no more from you than a you-can't-have-it-so-go-to-sleep!"
"Well, what else could I say?" said Merry. "I'm sorry, Pippin, but you really must wait till the morning. I'll be as curious as you like after breakfast, and I'll help you in any way I can at wizard-wheedling. But I can't keep awake any longer. If I yawn any more, I shall split at the ears. Good night! ~ J.R.R. Tolkien
Two Towers quotes by J.R.R. Tolkien
A red sun rises. Blood has been spilled this night. ~ J.R.R. Tolkien
Two Towers quotes by J.R.R. Tolkien
So much death! What can med do against such reckless hate? ~ J.R.R. Tolkien
Two Towers quotes by J.R.R. Tolkien
The Two Towers especially, and the first part of The Return of the King, have a structure reminiscent on a large scale of 'The Council of Elrond' on a small one. The word that describes the structure is 'interlace'. Tolkien certainly knew the word, for it has become a commonplace of Beowulf-criticism, but he may not have liked it much: it is associated also with the structure of French prose romance, in which he took little interest. However, Tolkien certainly also knew that the Icelandic word for a short story is a Þáttr, literally a thread. One could say that several Þaettir, or threads, twisted round each other, make up a saga; and Gandalf comes close to saying something like that when he says to Théoden, 'There are children in your land who, out of the twisted threads of story, could pick the answer to your question' (my emphasis). Tolkien may have felt that there had been all along a native version of the French technique of entrelacement, even if we no longer know the native word for it. But word, or no word, he was going to do it. ~ Tom Shippey
Two Towers quotes by Tom Shippey
If I see three oranges, I have to juggle. And if I see two towers, I have to walk. ~ Philippe Petit
Two Towers quotes by Philippe Petit
And here he was, a little halfling from the Shire, a simple hobbit of the quiet countryside, expected to find a way where the great ones could not go, or dared not go. It was an evil fate. ~ J.R.R. Tolkien
Two Towers quotes by J.R.R. Tolkien
When I see three oranges, I juggle; when I see two towers, I walk! ~ Philippe Petit
Two Towers quotes by Philippe Petit
War must be, while we defend our lives against a destroyer who would devour all; but I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend. ~ J.R.R. Tolkien
Two Towers quotes by J.R.R. Tolkien
But in the end it is only a passing thing ... this shadow. Even darkness must pass. - Samwise Gamgee, The Two Towers ~ J.R.R. Tolkien
Two Towers quotes by J.R.R. Tolkien
I KEEP TWO TOWERS OF DOCUMENTS IN MY SENATE OFFICE. THE first is only a few inches tall. A collection of all the legislation passed by Congress in 2013, it contains about eight hundred pages. The second tower, which is eleven feet tall, is a collection of regulations proposed and adopted by federal agencies in 2013. It contains about eighty thousand pages. ~ Mike Lee
Two Towers quotes by Mike Lee
Only two towers remained standing, one of which was so crooked and damaged it looked ready to topple at a cough from a butterfly. ~ Brandon Mull
Two Towers quotes by Brandon Mull
But you speak of Master Gandalf, as if he was in a story that had come to an end.'
'Yes, we do,' said Pippin sadly. 'The story seems to be going on, but I am afraid Gandalf has fallen out of it. ~ J.R.R. Tolkien
Two Towers quotes by J.R.R. Tolkien
The history of mankind would be far too stupid a thing if it had not had the intellect [Geist] of the powerless injected into it: - let us take the best example straight away. Nothing that has been done on earth against 'the noble', 'the mighty', 'the masters' and 'the rulers', is worth mentioning compared with what the Jews have done against them: the Jews, that priestly people, which in the last resort was able to gain satisfaction from its enemies and conquerors only through a radical revaluation of their values, that is, through an act of the most deliberate revenge. Only this was fitting for a priestly people with the most entrenched priestly vengefulness. It was the Jews who, rejecting the aristocratic value equation (good = noble = powerful = beautiful = happy = blessed) ventured, with awe-inspiring consistency, to bring about a reversal and held it in the teeth of the most unfathomable hatred (the hatred of the powerless), saying: 'Only those who suffer are good, only the poor, the powerless, the lowly are good; the suffering, the deprived, the sick, the ugly, are the only pious people, the only ones saved, salvation is for them alone, whereas you rich, the noble and powerful, you are eternally wicked, cruel, lustful, insatiate, godless, you will also be eternally wretched, cursed and damned!' . . . the slaves' revolt in morality begins with the Jews: a revolt which has two thousand years of history behind it and which has only been lost sight of because - it was ~ Friedrich Nietzsche
Two Towers quotes by Friedrich Nietzsche
Colonisation is violence, and there are many ways to carry out that violence. In addition to military and administrative chiefs and a veritable army of churchmen, the Belgians dispatched scientists to Rwanda. The scientists brought scales and measuring tapes and callipers, and they went about weighing Rwandans, measuring Rwandan cranial capacities, and conducting comparative analyses of the relative protuberance of Rwandan noses. Sure enough, the scientists found what they had believed all along. Tutsis had a 'nobler', more 'naturally' aristocratic dimensions than the 'coarse' and 'bestial' Hutus. On the 'nasal index' for instance, the median Tutsi nose was found to be about two and a half millimetres longer and nearly five millimetres narrower than the median Hutu nose. ~ Philip Gourevitch
Two Towers quotes by Philip Gourevitch
How do you control another person? Two ways. Trust, or fear. People and animals will follow you if they trust you. But trust must be earned. And it is earned by people who are good and great. So if you're neither good nor great, you can only use fear ... ~ J.H. Myn
Two Towers quotes by J.H. Myn
Life is good for only two things, discovering mathematics and teaching mathematics. ~ Simeon Denis Poisson
Two Towers quotes by Simeon Denis Poisson
The two fingered peace sign always fascinated me, because just in a turn of the hand it turns into war. ~ Me
Two Towers quotes by Me
Those deep hazel eyes held his and didn't blink.
"You'd be amazed what I would do to keep you alive."
Abruptly, V's mouth opened, his breath growing tight. And as the two of them stood chest-to-chest, he knew every inch of his body, felt it all at once. ~ J.R. Ward
Two Towers quotes by J.R. Ward
True wisdom consists in two things: Knowledge of God and Knowledge of Self. ~ John Calvin
Two Towers quotes by John Calvin
Frequently the whole book would boil down to a single breathing practice, with an entire philosophy wrapped around it. Sometimes, maddeningly, a book would spend two hundred pages promoting the spiritual value of a particular style of breathing, only to say at the end that it could not be taught in a book. ~ Gay Hendricks
Two Towers quotes by Gay Hendricks
Many thanks for your good wishes. The fact is, however, that I have not been ill except a two days attack of indigestion and subsequent fatigue, from which I am quite recovered. It is less easy to recover from a serious attack of indignation. ~ Harriet Boyd Hawes
Two Towers quotes by Harriet Boyd Hawes
When I left America I understood the formation of public opinion in Southeast Asia. I had had the best course possible, taught by a famous Asian expert. Two minutes at Chulalongkorn taught me that I might just as profitably have studied the zither. ~ Carol Hollinger
Two Towers quotes by Carol Hollinger
between the beginning of time and 2003, humanity generated roughly five exabytes of data, whereas we now produce the same volume of bits every two days. ~ Alberto Cairo
Two Towers quotes by Alberto Cairo
If any agreement between two nations is to last, it must serve the best interests of both nations. ~ Jimmy Carter
Two Towers quotes by Jimmy Carter
I think most generations tend to learn the lesson of war the hard way. There is a deep attraction to the empowerment. Freud is right: societies either become locked in a collective embrace of Eros, as individuals do, or a collective embrace of Thanatos, the death instinct. They swing between the two. The notion that societies are naturally prone toward self-preservation is wrong. Self-annihilation can be deeply addictive, intoxicating, enticing. So I take a darker view of human nature, that war is probably always going to be with us. I think history bears me out. ~ Chris Hedges
Two Towers quotes by Chris Hedges
Identification then becomes a process of imaginative wish fulfillment which can be, and is, criticized from at least two points of view. The moralists criticize it on the grounds that it is mere escapism, and in encouraging people to imagine a better existence for themselves discourages them from working to achieve it in reality. At the other end of the spectrum, the ideologists argue that identification is the process whereby the values of the dominant ideology are naturalized into the desires, almost the instincts, of the individual, and are thus endlessly reproduced and perpetuated. ~ John Fiske
Two Towers quotes by John Fiske
This isn't a game, human. Listen to the Skotos and go. We're not bound by the laws of the Oneroi. Killing humans is nothing for us. (Dolophoni)
Well, aren't you all scary in black. Ooo. What are you two masquerading as? Evil Man and his trusty sidekick Bad Boy? (Geary) ~ Sherrilyn Kenyon
Two Towers quotes by Sherrilyn Kenyon
I had no idea that marriage was only supposed to be between two people who wanted to get between the sheets and make more people. What ever happened to marrying for love - or to get on your partner's health insurance policy, or for presents? No one was going to buy two people in their thirties a four-slice toaster if we just continued to live in sin. ~ Jen Kirkman
Two Towers quotes by Jen Kirkman
When I'm home on a break, I lock myself in my room and play guitar. After two or three hours, I start getting into this total meditation. It's a feeling few people experience, and that's usually when I come up with weird stuff. It just flows. I can't force myself. I don't sit down and say I've got to practice. ~ Eddie Van Halen
Two Towers quotes by Eddie Van Halen
I live my life based on 2 principles. One, I live as if today was my last day on earth. Two, I live today as if I am going to live forever. ~ Osho
Two Towers quotes by Osho
This was the joy that the world sought
sacred and pagan all at once. A union between two dissimilars into a seamless one. A picture of love and deep satisfaction. An ecstatic glimpse of the beatific vision. ~ Sylvain Reynard
Two Towers quotes by Sylvain Reynard
Fashion has two purposes: comfort and love. Beauty comes when fashion succeeds. ~ Coco Chanel
Two Towers quotes by Coco Chanel
I like to thin the woman who ran the clinic would have done that for anyone - that there's a quiet web of women like her (like us, I flatter myself), stretching from pole to pole, ready to give other women a hand. She helped me even though she didn't have to, and I am forever grateful. But I also wonder what made me sound, to her ears, like someone worth trusting, someone it was safe to take a chance on. I certainly wasn't the neediest person calling her clinic. The fact is, I was getting that abortion no matter what. All I had to do was wait two weeks, or have an awkward conversation I did not want to have with my supportive, liberal, well-to-do mother. Privilege means that it's easy for white women to do each other favors. Privilege means that those of us who need it the least often get the most help. ~ Lindy West
Two Towers quotes by Lindy West
A turtle is like a lizard in a bicycle helmet, and I think that's romantic. That reminds me, I should write a love song called, "Dinner for two - plus one. ~ Jarod Kintz
Two Towers quotes by Jarod Kintz
The space of play and the space of thought are the two theaters of freedom. ~ Eugen Rosenstock-Huessy
Two Towers quotes by Eugen Rosenstock-Huessy
The two of us hold each other's gazes for a long, unembarrassed moment and I feel that Ky knows. I'm not sure what he knows - whether he knows me, or just something about me. ~ Ally Condie
Two Towers quotes by Ally Condie
What's even worse than a flute? - Two flutes! ~ Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Two Towers quotes by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Right and proof are two crutches for everything bent and crooked that limps along. ~ Franz Grillparzer
Two Towers quotes by Franz Grillparzer
I flew on Air Force Two for eight years, and now I have to take off my shoes to get on an aeroplane. ~ Al Gore
Two Towers quotes by Al Gore
Lately, however, on abandoning the brindled and grey mosquitos and commencing similar work on a new, brown species, of which I have as yet obtained very few individuals, I succeeded in finding in two of them certain remarkable and suspicious cells containing pigment identical in appearance to that of the parasite of malaria. As these cells appear to me to be very worthy of attention ... I think it would be advisable to place on record a brief description both of the cells and of the mosquitos. ~ Ronald Ross
Two Towers quotes by Ronald Ross
Natural gas is highly explosive, invisible, poisonous, and odorless. Yet we accept natural gas, even though it kills not two but 400 Americans a year, because it was introduced before we got crazy about risk. We accept coal, even though mining it is nasty and filthy and kills dozens of people every year. By contrast, we're terrified of nuclear energy. Chernobyl, the worst nuclear power disaster ever, killed only 30 people. Some say the radiation may eventually kill others, but even if that's true, natural gas kills more people every year. ~ John Stossel
Two Towers quotes by John Stossel
The adventures of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, a team generally regarded as seeking justice, can be compared to the adventures of Rex Stout's two most famous characters, Nero Wolf and Archie Goodwin. ~ James Grady
Two Towers quotes by James Grady
One or two individuals in times of crisis turn into Heroes, a handful into Villains, the rest into Fools. ~ Marisha Pessl
Two Towers quotes by Marisha Pessl
While the game of deadlocks and bottle-necks goes on, another more serious game is also being played. It is governed by two axioms. One is that there can be no peace without a general surrender of sovereignty: the other is that no country capable of defending its sovereignty ever surrenders it. If one keeps these axioms in mind one can generally see the relevant facts in international affairs through the smoke-screen with which the newspapers surround them. ~ George Orwell
Two Towers quotes by George Orwell
I've always said that movies are kind of like love affairs. Two people come together, and if they're at the right place at the right time and it's the right situation, it clicks. I've always felt that I've connected with screenplays. It's the romantic in me. ~ Robert Zemeckis
Two Towers quotes by Robert Zemeckis
Who's this - alone with stone and sky? It's only my old dog and I - It's only him; it's only me; Alone with stone and grass and tree. What share we most - we two together? Smells, and awareness of the weather. What is it makes us more than dust? My trust in him; in me his trust. ~ Siegfried Sassoon
Two Towers quotes by Siegfried Sassoon
There are two parts to learning craftsmanship: knowledge and work. You must gain the knowledge of principles, patterns, practices, and heuristics that a craftsman knows, and you must also grind that knowledge into your fingers, eyes, and gut by working hard and
practicing. ~ Robert C. Martin
Two Towers quotes by Robert C. Martin
I'm not writing a book of Western history,' I tell him. 'I've written enough history books to know this isn't one. I'm writing about something else. A marriage, I guess. Deadwood was just a blank space in the marriage. Why waste time on it?'
Rodman is surprised. So am I, actually - I have never formulated precisely what it is I have been doing, but the minute I say it I know I have said it right. What interests me in all these papers is not Susan Burling Ward, the novelist and illustrator, and not Oliver Ward the engineer, and not the West they spend their lives in. What really interests me is how two such unlike particles clung together, and under what strains, rolling downhill into their future until they reached the angle of repose where I knew them. That's where the interest is. That's where the meaning will be if I find any. ~ Wallace Stegner
Two Towers quotes by Wallace Stegner
You know what guys do? They stand up for people. You know why? Two reasons. It's right. And it feels good. Even if the person doesn't know what you did. Maybe especially then. ~ David Lubar
Two Towers quotes by David Lubar
The two-word definition of sustainability is 'one planet.' ~ Mathis Wackernagel
