They feel guilty for having survived so they pretend the bad things never happened
Exodus (1960) screenplay ~ Dalton Trumbo
Trauma Survivors quotes by Dalton Trumbo
My pain has always deserved a voice and I will not deny it that, but I won't devote my life to it either. ~ Trista Mateer
Trauma Survivors quotes by Trista Mateer
Traumatic events challenge an individual's view of the world as a just, safe and predictable place. Traumas that are caused by human behavior. . . commonly have more psychological impact than those caused by nature. ~ American Psychological Association
Trauma Survivors quotes by American Psychological Association
With regard to complex trauma survivors, self-determination and autonomy require that the therapist treat each client as the "authority" in determining the meaning and interpretation of his or her personal life history, including (but not limited to) traumatic experiences (Harvey, 1996). Therapists can inadvertently misappropriate the client's authority over the meaning and significance of her or his memories (and associated symptoms, such as intrusive reexperiencing or dissociative flashbacks) by suggesting specific "expert" interpretations of the memories or symptoms. Clients who feel profoundly abandoned by key caregivers may appear deeply grateful for such interpretations and pronouncements by their therapists, because they can fulfill a deep longing for a substitute parent who makes sense of the world or takes care of them. However, this delegation of authority to the therapist can backfire if the client cannot, or does not, take ownership of her or his own memories or life story by determining their personal meaning. Moreover, the client can be trapped in a stance of avoidance because trauma memories are never experienced, processed, and put to rest. Helping a client to develop a core sense of relational security and the capacity to regulate (and recover from) extreme hyper- or hypoarousal is essential if the client is to achieve a self-determined and autonomous approach to defining the meaning and impact of trauma memories, a crucial goal of posttraumatic therapy. ~ Christine A. Courtois
Trauma Survivors quotes by Christine A. Courtois
Know that the pain you have endured does not define you to me. What defines you to me is the way you talk about love, especially loving yourself. 'I have learned to love everything about me,' you wrote. You are powerful. ~ Ashley Asti
Trauma Survivors quotes by Ashley Asti
As you may already know, post-traumatic stress disorder is extremely complex. Each client has a unique, perhaps virtually unbelievable, set of experiences, and an almost equally set of reactions to those experiences. ~ Aphrodite Matsakis
Trauma Survivors quotes by Aphrodite Matsakis
traumatic diagnoses such as post-traumatic stress disorder and dissociative identity disorder describe a shared array of human responses to degradation and dehumanization (Good & Hinton, 2016; Ross, 2011) ~ Michael Salter
Trauma Survivors quotes by Michael Salter
Emotional abuse is designed to undermine another's sense of self.
It is deliberate humiliation, with the intent to seize control of how others feel about themselves. ~ Lorraine Nilon
Trauma Survivors quotes by Lorraine Nilon
It makes perfect sense that if human beings are raised in warm, loving households; if they are brought up to believe that the world is a secure and decent place, then they will grow up with a healthy relationship toward themselves and other people. - able to give love freely and receive it in return. Conversely, if a person is severely mistreated from his earliest years, subjected to constant psychological and physical abuse, he or she will grow up with a malignant view of life. To such a person, the world is a hateful place where all human relationships are based, not on love and respect, but on power, suffering, and humiliation. ~ Harold Schechter
Trauma Survivors quotes by Harold Schechter
Once the individual has learned to dissociate in the context of trauma, he or she may subsequently transfer this response to other situations and it may be repeated thereafter arbitrarily in a wide variety of circumstances. The dissociation therefore "destabilizes adaptation and becomes pathological."[6] It is important for the psychiatrist to accurately diagnose DDs and also to place the symptoms in perspective with regard to trauma history. ~ Julie P. Gentile
Trauma Survivors quotes by Julie P. Gentile
I believe that we belittle survivors by assuming that they will fail. ~ Toni Bernhard
Trauma Survivors quotes by Toni Bernhard
Although Megan "knew" she was not in danger, her body told her that she was. If sensorimotor habits are firmly entrenched, accurate cognitive interpretations may not exert much influence on changing bodily orgamzation and arousal responses. Instead, the traumatized person may experience the reality of the body rather than that of the mind. To be most effective, the sensorimotor psychotherapist works on both the cognitive and sensorimotor levels. With Megan, a purely cognitive approach might foster some change in her integrative capacity, but the change would be only momentary if the cowering response were reactivated each time she received feedback at work... However, if she is encouraged to remember to "stand tall" in the face of criticism, her body and her thoughts will be congruent with each other and with current reality. ~ Pat Ogden
Trauma Survivors quotes by Pat Ogden
The traumatic event, although real, took place outside the parameters of "normal" reality, such as causality, sequence, place, and time. The trauma is thus an event that has no beginning, no ending, no before, no during and no after. This absence of categories that define it lends it to a quality of "otherness", a salience, a timelessness and a ubiquity that puts it outside the range of associatively linked experiences, outside the range of comprehension, of recounting and of mastery. Trauma survivors live not with memories of the past, but with an event that could not and did not proceed through to its completion, has no ending, attained no closure, and therefore, as far as its survivors are concerned, continues into the present and is current in every respect. ~ Dori Laub
Trauma Survivors quotes by Dori Laub
We don't go back to wallow, we go back to undo the lies that are back there that are holding its captive from living a wondrous and full life. ~ Darlene Ouimet
Trauma Survivors quotes by Darlene Ouimet
TRAUMA STEALS YOUR VOICE

People get so tired of asking you what's wrong and you've run out of nothings to tell them.

You've tried and they've tried, but the words just turn to ashes every time they try to leave your mouth.

They start as fire in the pit of your stomach, but come out in a puff of smoke.

You are not you anymore.

And you don't know how to fix this.

The worst part is...you don't even know how to try. ~ Nikitta Gill
Trauma Survivors quotes by Nikitta Gill
The sacred wandering is a healing journey. It gives us the courage to face old wounds. We bravely face our past hurts. If we don't give ourselves permission to feel the pain, we cannot heal the pain. We must feel it to heal it. ~ Dana Arcuri
Trauma Survivors quotes by Dana Arcuri
Beneath the surface of the protective parts of trauma survivors there exists an undamaged essence, a Self that is confident, curious, and calm, a Self that has been sheltered from destruction by the various protectors that have emerged in their efforts to ensure survival. Once those protectors trust that it is safe to separate, the Self will spontaneously emerge, and the parts can be enlisted in the healing process ~ Bessel A. Van Der Kolk
Trauma Survivors quotes by Bessel A. Van Der Kolk
I have met many, many severely distressed people whose daily lives are filled with the agony of both remembered and unremembered trauma, who try so hard to heal and yet who are constantly being pushed down both by their symptoms and the oppressive circumstances of post traumatic life around them. ~ Carolyn Spring
Trauma Survivors quotes by Carolyn Spring
The wounded mind must be reset like a fractured bone. It cannot heal itself without spiritual realignment. ~ Anthon St. Maarten
Trauma Survivors quotes by Anthon St. Maarten
But how do we live with these secrets locked within us? How do we tie our shoes, brush our hair, drink coffee, wash the dishes, and go to sleep, pretending everything is fine? How do we laugh and feel happiness despite the buried things growing inside? How can we do that day after day? ~ Erika L. Sánchez
Trauma Survivors quotes by Erika L. Sánchez
Still, I insisted that I was as entitled to a Survivor's Syndrome as my father, so she asked me two questions. The first one was this: "Do you believe sometimes that you are a good person in a world where almost all of the other good people are dead?"
"No," I said.
"Do you sometimes believe that you must be wicked, since all the good people are dead, and that the only way to clear your name is to be dead, too?"
"No," I said.
"You may be entitled to the Survivor's Syndrome, but you didn't get it," she said. "Would you like to try for tuberculosis instead? ~ Kurt Vonnegut
Trauma Survivors quotes by Kurt Vonnegut
People like head trauma. They love knockouts. The crowd is silent, silent, silent ... and then a knockout happens, and everyone goes native. There would be far fewer knockouts without the gloves. ~ Jonathan Gottschall
Trauma Survivors quotes by Jonathan Gottschall
Parts of you are phobic of anger and generally terrified and ashamed of angry dissociative parts. There is often tremendous conflict between anger-avoidant and anger-fixated parts of an individual. Thus, an internal and perpetual cycle of rage-shame-fear creates inner chaos and pain. ~ Suzette Boon
Trauma Survivors quotes by Suzette Boon
When I ask you who you are, you'd better say my fucking name. ~ Alicen Grey
Trauma Survivors quotes by Alicen Grey
... Obviously, I have always wished I could remember what happened in that wood. The very few people who know about the whole Knocknaree thing invariably suggest, sooner or later, that I should try hypnotic regression, but for some reason I find the idea distasteful. I'm deeply suspicious of anything with a whiff of the New Age about it - not because of the practices themselves, which as far as I can tell from a safe distance may well have a lot to them, but because of the people who get involved who always seem to be the kind who corner you at parties to explain how they discovered that they are survivors and deserve to be happy. I worry that I might come out of hypnosis with that sugar-high glaze of self-satisfied enlightenment, like a seventeen-year-old who's just discovered Kerouak, and start proselytizing strangers in pubs ... ~ Tana French
Trauma Survivors quotes by Tana French
The skin on her upper arms prickled like it'd done so many times back in Jeddah, a sign to be careful. ~ Louise Burfitt-Dons
Trauma Survivors quotes by Louise Burfitt-Dons
Psychological and emotional wellness is an ongoing process for everyone. ~ C. Kennedy
Trauma Survivors quotes by C. Kennedy
Before I started chemotherapy treatments, I wrote down the best advice from doctors, family, friends, books, and survivors and created an 'Owner's Manual' to help me take care of myself. It would remind me that cancer is doable. ~ Regina Brett
Trauma Survivors quotes by Regina Brett
We can deal with our cultural and environmental crises only after we deal with our human crises of trauma, denial, and emotional paralysis. This will require that most difficult of all human endeavors, facing our own despair. This involves waking from our trance of denial, facing our own pain and sorrow, accepting the world as it is, adapting, and living more intentionally. ~ Mary Pipher
Trauma Survivors quotes by Mary Pipher
We don't really want to know what soldiers go through in combat. We do not really want to know how many children are being molested and abused in our own society or how many couples - almost a third, as it turns out - engage in violence at some point during their relationship. We want to think of families as safe havens in a heartless world and of our own country as populated by enlightened, civilized people. We prefer to believe that cruelty occurs only in faraway places like Darfur or the Congo. It is hard enough for observers to bear witness to pain. Is it any wonder, then, that the traumatized individuals themselves cannot tolerate remembering it and that they often resort to using drugs, alcohol, or self-mutilation to block out their unbearable knowledge? ~ Bessel A. Van Der Kolk
Trauma Survivors quotes by Bessel A. Van Der Kolk
On a sub, you know, there's no place for things to drain to. The survivors claimed that the blood was knee-deep all through the submarine. ~ Neal Stephenson
Trauma Survivors quotes by Neal Stephenson
I have to acknowledge that the sea is a cup of death, and the land is a stained altar stone. We the living are survivors huddled on flotsam, living on jetsam. We are escapees. We wake in terror, eat in hunger, sleep with a mouth full of blood. ~ Annie Dillard
Trauma Survivors quotes by Annie Dillard
The war is against children, and all the other wars are just a shadow of the war on children. ~ Stefan Molyneux
Trauma Survivors quotes by Stefan Molyneux
If you're working, it's the best therapy for posttraumatic stress, Juan says. Studies have shown that the gravity of posttraumatic stress is directly proportional to the length of time one lives with the threat of death, and Juan slowly unwinds the trauma of the sixty-nine days he lived inside a thundering mountain by going to work, fixing machines, then going back home, and then returning to work again. ~ Hector Tobar
Trauma Survivors quotes by Hector Tobar
This is what rituals are for. We do spiritual ceremonies as human beings in order to create a safe resting place for our most complicated feelings of joy or trauma, so that we don't have to haul those feelings around with us forever, weighing us down. We all need such places of ritual safekeeping. And I do believe that if your culture or tradition doesn't have the specific ritual you are craving, then you are absolutely permitted to make up a ceremony of your own devising, fixing your own broken-down emotional systems with all the do-it-yourself resourcefulness of a generous plumber/poet. ~ Elizabeth Gilbert
Trauma Survivors quotes by Elizabeth Gilbert
We laughed the laugh of women untethered, finally, from their origins. ~ Lidia Yuknavitch
Trauma Survivors quotes by Lidia Yuknavitch
Being an entrepreneur is sexy ... for those who haven't done it. In reality it's gritty, tough work where you will be filled with self doubt. Entrepreneurs are survivors. ~ Mark Suster
Trauma Survivors quotes by Mark Suster
Clairey tasted the bile rising up in her throat, could smell the pathetic fear she was giving off, and they
were as familiar to her as waking and sleep, as hunger and thirst. In her time of peace there with Ellis, she had nearly forgotten the taste and smell of it, how her joints became liquid and her mouth became sour. That was what violence did to her. ~ Tracy Winegar
Trauma Survivors quotes by Tracy Winegar
Use the knowledge gained and the lessons learned to practice being compassionate with yourself as you take the courageous steps to move forward.

While you're at it, tie a big knot in the uninspired words coming from the negative voices in and around you. ~ Leonie H. Mattison
Trauma Survivors quotes by Leonie H. Mattison
It would cut into him at unpredictable moments, like a gutting knife made of colored light. ~ David Baldacci
Trauma Survivors quotes by David Baldacci
I guess I'm a survivor. There are many of us survivors and any successful woman of my age has somewhat of that in her. ~ Helen Gurley Brown
Trauma Survivors quotes by Helen Gurley Brown
There are wounds that never show on the body that are deeper and more hurtful than anything that bleeds. ~ Laurell K. Hamilton
Trauma Survivors quotes by Laurell K. Hamilton
You're a survivor because every day you make a choice not to be governed by their harsh words or actions. No one has the right to take away your happiness ~ Assunta Harris
Trauma Survivors quotes by Assunta Harris
There are people who come home from war and want to talk about the pain, but no one wants to listen; there are others who want to keep silent and repress the memories, and all their family and friends want is to talk about it. I call this the war veteran reintegration paradox. ~ M.B. Dallocchio
Trauma Survivors quotes by M.B. Dallocchio
Each time I experience the unseen wisdom of a person's system, it deepens my trust in the inner process unfolding and my awe at the way we are organized to be protected until the possibility of healing arrives. ~ Bonnie Badenoch
Trauma Survivors quotes by Bonnie Badenoch
Maybe it's true that shared trauma brings people closer together-a common hardship, a battle to survive-because when times are quiet people relax and go their own separate ways. They're lulled into believing they've got everything under control and don't need what they did before. ~ Laura Wiess
Trauma Survivors quotes by Laura Wiess
It gave their families at home great comfort to see them chatting, looking radiant, doing well. 'We are fine, mothers. Look how happy we are, now we free from our bad bosses. ~ Louise Burfitt-Dons
Trauma Survivors quotes by Louise Burfitt-Dons
Never shy away from any experience that could turn out to be a memorable tale because history's tales are told by survivors. ~ Aaron Millar
Trauma Survivors quotes by Aaron Millar
Physicians and mental health workers today don't speak of retrieving souls, but they are faced with a similar task - restoring wholeness to an organism that has been fragmented by trauma. Shamanistic concepts and procedures treat trauma by uniting lost soul and body in the presence of community. This approach is alien to the technological mind. However, these procedures do seem to succeed where conventional Western approaches fail. ~ Peter A. Levine
Trauma Survivors quotes by Peter A. Levine
Essentially all serial offenders experience trauma in childhood that leaves them unable to form normal emotional and psychological connections with other humans. ~ Joanna Schaffhausen
Trauma Survivors quotes by Joanna Schaffhausen
You told me it was a mistake to fight the scarred warriors. They were the survivors. ~ Michael Scott
