Indeed ethnography and theory resemble nothing so much as the two arcs
of a hyperbola, which cast their beams in opposite directions, lighting up the
surfaces, respectively, of mind and world. They are back to back, and darkness
reigns between them. But what if each arc were to reverse its orientation, so as to
embrace the other in an encompassing, brightly illuminated ellipse? We would
then have neither ethnography nor theory, nor even a compound of both. What
we would have is an undivided, interstitial field of anthropology. If ethnographic
theory is the hyperbola, anthropology is the ellipse. For ethnography, when it
turns, is no longer ethnography but the educational correspondences of real life.
And theory, when it turns, is no longer theory, but an imagination nourished by
its observational engagements with the world. The rupture between reality and
imagination - the one annexed to fact, the other to theory - has been the source
of much havoc in the history of consciousness. It needs to be repaired. It is surely
the task of anthropology, before all else, to repair it. In calling a halt to the proliferation
of ethnography, I am not asking for more theory. My plea is for a return
to anthropology. ~ Tim Ingold
Tim Ingold quotes by Tim Ingold
It is of the essence of life that it does not begin here or end there, or connect a point of origin with a final destination, but rather that it keeps on going, finding a way through the myriad of things that form, persist and break up in its currents. Life, in short, is a movement of opening, not of closure. ~ Tim Ingold
Tim Ingold quotes by Tim Ingold
An imagined landscape, then, is a landscape not of being but of becoming: a composition not of objects and surfaces but of movements and stillness, not there to be surveyed but cast in the current of time. ~ Tim Ingold
Tim Ingold quotes by Tim Ingold
Artists, composers and writers...are bent upon capturing and reining in the insights of a fugitive imagination, always inclined to shoot off into the distance, before they can get away, and on bringing them back into the immediacy of material engagement. Like hunters, they too are dream-catchers. ~ Tim Ingold
Tim Ingold quotes by Tim Ingold
Faced with an ecological crisis whose roots lie in this disengagement, in the separation of human agency and social responsibility from the sphere of our direct involvement with the non-human environment, it surely behoves us to reverse this order of priority. I began with the point that while both humans and animals have histories of their mutual relations, only humans narrate such histories. But to construct a narrative, one must already dwell in the world and, in the dwelling, enter into relationships with its constituents, both human and non-human. I am suggesting that we rewrite the history of human-animal relations, taking this condition of active engagement, of being-in-the-world, as our starting point. We might speak of it as a history of human concern with animals, insofar as this notion conveys a caring, attentive regard, a 'being with'. And I am suggesting that those of us who are 'with' animals in their day-to-day lives, most notably hunters and herdsmen, can offer us some of the best possible indications of how we might proceed. ~ Tim Ingold
Tim Ingold quotes by Tim Ingold
I don't consider myself to be precious, necessarily, but give me air-conditioning or give me death. ~ Tim Federle
Tim Ingold quotes by Tim Federle
I miss that thing I used to do when I first started out where I would just spontaneously generate ideas and try things and see where they'd go. ~ Tim Pratt
Tim Ingold quotes by Tim Pratt
Anger is sweeping the country! Tea bags from sea to shining sea! Voters everywhere exploding from frustration!" "Why?" "Because the facts don't support their beliefs. ~ Tim Dorsey
Tim Ingold quotes by Tim Dorsey
The great design of Jesus' descent into hell is to rouse
people out of their deep sleep, to deliver them from sin and death. ~ Tim Liwanag
Tim Ingold quotes by Tim Liwanag
It wasn't a case of me sitting down and thinking, right then, what shall I do with my life? Airline pilot? Plumber? Guitar manufacturer? Writer ... yeah, writer. I've always loved writing, from a very early age
I guess I was writing my first stories when I was still in single digits. It progressed, and the love of writing grew in my mind and is still growing. Doing it full-time, there are different stresses and tensions, and the business side of it comes to the fore sometimes. But I still love it, and I'm always thankful that I can do what I do and make a living from it. ~ Tim Lebbon
Tim Ingold quotes by Tim Lebbon
Instead of raising taxes as some would insist, we need to reduce waste and inefficiency in government. ~ Tim Murphy
Tim Ingold quotes by Tim Murphy
How bad do you want it? How bad do you need it? Are you eating, sleeping, dreaming with that one thing on your mind? How bad do you want it? How bad do you need it? 'Cause if you want it you gotta lay it all out on the line. ~ Tim McGraw
Tim Ingold quotes by Tim McGraw
You can stick a fork in Barack Obama. Politically, he's done. The main way we can screw this up is if we choose the wrong Republican. ~ Tim Pawlenty
Tim Ingold quotes by Tim Pawlenty
Now is better than never.
Although never is often better than *right* now. ~ Tim Peters
Tim Ingold quotes by Tim Peters
CEASE FIRE,' Captain Johansen shouted. 'Cease fire, what's wrong with you guys? Stop wasting the goddamn ammo. CEASE FIRE!'
Cease fire,' the lieutenants hollered.
Cease fire,' the platoon sergeants hollered.
Cease the goddamn fire,' shouted the squad leaders.
That,' I told Barney, 'is the chain of command. ~ Tim O'Brien
Tim Ingold quotes by Tim O'Brien
The Son is called the Father; so the Son must be the Father. We must realize this fact. There are some who say that He is called the Father, but He is not really the Father. But how could He be called the Father and yet not be the Father? ... In the place where no man can approach Him (I Tim. 6:16), God is the Father. When He comes forth to manifest Himself, He is the Son. So, a Son is given, yet His name is called 'The everlasting Father.' This very Son who has been given to us is the very Father. ~ Witness Lee
Tim Ingold quotes by Witness Lee
A body is a body." Viscarro shrugged his bony shoulders. "Dead, alive, alive, dead. I fail to see the importance of the distinction."
Yeah? So you'd just as soon fuck a living person as a dead one? What's the point of the distinction? Oh, right-one's normal, and one's called necrophilia."
Viscarro sighed. "Touche, I suppose. ~ Tim Pratt
Tim Ingold quotes by Tim Pratt
Where, I wonder, should I have been over the long years across the world without the spasmodic, always unexpected, and totally reliable friendship of companions like Donald Wise, and Ralph Izzard, and Patrick O'Donovan, and David Holden, and Louis Heren, and Sam White, and Richard Scott, and René MacColl, and Stanley Uys, and Ted Levite, and David Walker, and Tim Baistow, and Stanley Burch, and a score more of their kind, at any moment liable to appear through the swing-doors of anywhere between Tuscaloosa and Tonkin and reduce chaos to the healing anodyne of a glass and the shared misfortunes of existence.
(On journalism in "Point of Departure" page 80) ~ James Francis Cameron
Tim Ingold quotes by James Francis Cameron
I know I'm the guy others will lean on. ~ Tim Duncan
Tim Ingold quotes by Tim Duncan
They'd had fun, for sure. They laughed and enjoyed being together. But if she was painfully honest with herself, something was missing. Something in the way Tim looked at her. She remembered her mom's word. "I saw the way he looked at you ... he adores you." Maybe that was it. Tim looked at her on a surface level. He smiled and seemed happy to see her. But When Cody looked at her, there were no layers left, nothing her didn't reveal, nothing he couldn't see. He didn't really look at her so much as he looked into her. To the deepest, most real places in her heart and soul. ~ Karen Kingsbury
Tim Ingold quotes by Karen Kingsbury
Adventure travel existed before I started, I just didn't know it. ~ Tim Cahill
Tim Ingold quotes by Tim Cahill
It's one thing to say you're for the war; it's another thing to send your kid to war - your daughter or your son. ~ Tim O'Brien
Tim Ingold quotes by Tim O'Brien
I don't try to change myself to impress anybody. I'm just who I am. ~ Tim Duncan
Tim Ingold quotes by Tim Duncan
You know they ain't bad people. They're just uneducated, unsophisticated, untraveled, immoral, and uncivilized. Plus stupid." -The Missing ~ Tim Gautreaux
Tim Ingold quotes by Tim Gautreaux
The end goal of meditation is to do whatever helps slow your mind down, in order to achieve a peaceful, positive state of mind and body. ~ Tim McCarthy
Tim Ingold quotes by Tim McCarthy
Good content should be at the heart of your strategy, but it is equally important to keep the display context of that content in mind as well. ~ Tim Frick
Tim Ingold quotes by Tim Frick
I'm a creative guy, artistically with graphics. ~ Tim Allen
Tim Ingold quotes by Tim Allen
If we could learn to trust and rest and be instead of always striving to do, we would find ourselves face to face with some of life's most perplexing paradoxes. First, that transformation comes only when we stop trying to transform ourselves. Second, that love can flow out of us only after we've allowed it to flow freely into us. And third, that you can't catch God by chasing him; you catch him only by accepting his pursuit of you. ~ Tim King
Tim Ingold quotes by Tim King
I've been deeply influenced by Aristotle's idea that virtue is a habit, something you practice and get better at, rather than something that comes naturally. 'The control of the appetites by right reason,' is how he defined it. ~ Tim O'Reilly
Tim Ingold quotes by Tim O'Reilly
I was in my thirties before I learnt that I too would prefer not to see what I could no longer have ~ Tim Winton
Tim Ingold quotes by Tim Winton

Tim Ingold quotes by Tim Hendrick

Tim Ingold quotes by Tim Robbins

Tim Ingold quotes by Tim Pawlenty
It is the the duty of a Webmaster to allocate URIs which you will be able to stand by in 2 years, in 20 years, in 200 years. ~ Tim Berners-Lee
Tim Ingold quotes by Tim Berners-Lee
I am not a conservative but I have spoken out for years against the staggering amount of blind hatred directed at black conservatives by liberals. Liberals are shockingly quick to demean and dismiss brilliant black people like Rice, Carson, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, U.S. Senator Tim Scott (R-SC), Professor Walter E. Williams and economist Thomas Sowell because they don't fit into the role they have carved out for a black person in America. Black Americans must be obedient liberals on all things or risk being called a race traitor or an Uncle Tom. ~ Juan Williams
Tim Ingold quotes by Juan Williams
In my experience with women that I've dated and my wife now, is you have to know what they care about. And even if you aren't a huge fan of it, you still have to have interest in it and it has to be genuine because women do it for men all the time. ~ Tim Meadows
Tim Ingold quotes by Tim Meadows
See? I can feed a lot of you to yourself if you keep wanting to act this way. ~ Tim Miller
Tim Ingold quotes by Tim Miller
Bureaucracies are a strange beast whose only goal is obesity. ~ Tim Heaton
Tim Ingold quotes by Tim Heaton
I tend to believe that computers are drawing kids
and adults
away from reading purely because they provide an alternative, vast source of spare-time amusement and entertainment. I recently heard a frightening statistic: there are less than one million true readers in this country (those who read every day instead of one book per year on a beach). Terrifying. ~ Tim Lebbon
Tim Ingold quotes by Tim Lebbon
