I was not rebelling by smoking dope or drinking, I was testing ideas. I was experimenting with voice, what I could say and still be heard in an atmosphere of prescribed truths. ~ Terry Tempest Williams
Testing Ideas quotes by Terry Tempest Williams
In the 1920s, there was a dinner at which the physicist Robert W. Wood was asked to respond to a toast ... 'To physics and metaphysics.' Now by metaphysics was meant something like philosophy - truths that you could get to just by thinking about them. Wood took a second, glanced about him, and answered along these lines: The physicist has an idea, he said. The more he thinks it through, the more sense it makes to him. He goes to the scientific literature, and the more he reads, the more promising the idea seems. Thus prepared, he devises an experiment to test the idea. The experiment is painstaking. Many possibilities are eliminated or taken into account; the accuracy of the measurement is refined. At the end of all this work, the experiment is completed and ... the idea is shown to be worthless. The physicist then discards the idea, frees his mind (as I was saying a moment ago) from the clutter of error, and moves on to something else. The difference between physics and metaphysics, Wood concluded, is that the metaphysicist has no laboratory. ~ Carl Sagan
Testing Ideas quotes by Carl Sagan
Examples of selling of ideas are portrayed in consulting or paid advice, as the pricing of intellectual property is market driven. ~ Chuck Martin
Testing Ideas quotes by Chuck Martin
One of my big pet peeves is single-use plastic bags. I think it's one of the stupidest ideas in the world. ~ Philippe Cousteau, Jr.
Testing Ideas quotes by Philippe Cousteau, Jr.
The fastest way to break the cycle of perfectionism and become a fearless mother is to give up the idea of doing it perfectly - indeed to embrace uncertainty and imperfection. ~ Arianna Huffington
Testing Ideas quotes by Arianna Huffington
The best way to support dreams and stretch is to set apart small ideas with big potential, then give people positive role models and the resources to turn small projects into big businesses. ~ Jack Welch
Testing Ideas quotes by Jack Welch
We're dealing with music that is being played by traditional instruments in a specifically built building called a concert hall.
But classical is not - the reference is wrong, because classical on one hand refers to one period in musical history, which is Mozart, Hayden, Beethoven, which is a fine period in musical history, but it was a while ago.On the other hand, it sort of alludes to some kind of "class," which A, is not true; B, is kind of detrimental to the whole idea. Because the point is that this music is available and it's actually relatively reasonably priced. ~ Esa-Pekka Salonen
Testing Ideas quotes by Esa-Pekka Salonen
I have so much freedom to put whatever I want on a t-shirt, and it's cool because I get a lot of fan feedback so I like to see what kids like to wear and I like to use some of their ideas to make t-shirts. ~ Jack Barakat
Testing Ideas quotes by Jack Barakat
Education does not mean jamming information into somebody's head. Rather, it's that ancient idea that all knowledge is within us; to teach is to help somebody pull it out of themselves. ~ Alan Arkin
Testing Ideas quotes by Alan Arkin
People ask me, 'Don't you ever run out of ideas?' Well, on the first place, I don't use ideas. Every time I have an idea, it's too limiting and usually turns out to be a disappointment. But I haven't run out of curiosity. ~ Robert Rauschenberg
Testing Ideas quotes by Robert Rauschenberg
Different ideas will capture my imagination and ask if they can be in a story. Sometimes they fit together and sometimes they don't. One notion leads to another and I might write pages that will have to go away later, but I'm sketching, getting to know a character, how he or she speaks or lives, so I just let it flow. Things start to click. I don't outline before starting, nor do I write one chapter at a time or even in chronological order. If I'm thinking about a scene, conversation, or event that will come later, I page down and write away. ~ Lisa Preston
Testing Ideas quotes by Lisa Preston
There are a lot of good ideas that could benefit from big media. You have a lot of companies that hit a wall and can't get beyond a certain level. They need the infrastructure and distribution of a large company. ~ Ross Levinsohn
Testing Ideas quotes by Ross Levinsohn
Probably, indeed, the larger part of the labor of an author composing his work is critical labor; the labor of sifting, combining, constructing, expunging, correcting, testing. This frightful toil is as much critical as creative. ~ T. S. Eliot
Testing Ideas quotes by T. S. Eliot
Knowing what I knew about Russia, as much as I loved the music and was fascinated by the songs and the whole idea of it, I knew it would be a very lengthy and frustrating process. ~ Marc Almond
Testing Ideas quotes by Marc Almond
So many people have asked me about getting their own LEGO Oscar that I submitted it to LEGO Ideas so that everyone has the ability to get one. ~ Nathan Sawaya
Testing Ideas quotes by Nathan Sawaya
A man with lofty ideas is an uncomfortable neighbor. ~ Marie Von Ebner-Eschenbach
Testing Ideas quotes by Marie Von Ebner-Eschenbach
When I'm on the set, I'll come up with ideas if I'm sort of just between responsibilities, because there's a lot of sitting around on set. Invariably, though, the stuff I come up with on the set tends to be bad. ~ Bruce Eric Kaplan
Testing Ideas quotes by Bruce Eric Kaplan
You have this idea that you think is awesome. You want to have that broadest group you possibly can. You don't want to just talk to 1 type of person and learn that, you want to get familiar with the space. ~ Emmett Shear
Testing Ideas quotes by Emmett Shear
I like the idea that the sacred photo framing process is equally violatible and I think that's partly a carryover from the way I deal with structures to the way I deal with photography. ~ Gordon Matta-Clark
Testing Ideas quotes by Gordon Matta-Clark
This was the very purpose of creation that each unique, individual being should participate in its own way in the divine Being, should realize its eternal 'idea' in God, should 'become' God by participation, God expressing himself through that unique being. ~ Bede Griffiths
Testing Ideas quotes by Bede Griffiths
Among German historians, there's really not much debate about whether or not Hitler was a social Darwinist. He clearly was drawing on Darwinian ideas. ~ Richard Weikart
Testing Ideas quotes by Richard Weikart
Where did you get that idea for a nose?
- Frizz Mizuno ~ Scott Westerfeld
Testing Ideas quotes by Scott Westerfeld
Faith is what? Faith is to love something you have no idea about. ~ Sri Sri Ravi Shankar
Testing Ideas quotes by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar
We, however, have all kinds of different ideas about what happiness is. Some must go bungee jumping to experience a rush of joy, while others find bliss staying home. Some are happy in a concert hall, listening to classical music, while children on a playground could be music to the ears of others. Some people experience elation when they solve a complicated equation, while for others a cancelled math class is a happy childhood memory. ~ Haim Shapira
Testing Ideas quotes by Haim Shapira
The revolution of ideas that will save us is a revolution of goodwill, of compassion, and of higher thinking. I believe that they outnumber the people who would choose fear. But they are not a particularly politicized force. If you look at the numbers of people buying books about revolutions from within and personal transformation as the key to global change, the numbers add up to a much greater audience than most people realize. ~ Marianne Williamson
Testing Ideas quotes by Marianne Williamson
Most people are passive aggressive in this world. I have the idea that the human being is born with a kind of reservoir of aggression. We are inherently somewhat aggressive creatures and we either channel that in direct ways or we channel it in indirect ways and become passive aggressive. ~ Robert Greene
Testing Ideas quotes by Robert Greene
Through your ideas, you open the window of your mind and say a hello to the world. ~ Mehmet Murat Ildan
Testing Ideas quotes by Mehmet Murat Ildan
Actually ideas are everywhere. It's the paperwork, that is, sitting down and thinking them into a coherent story, trying to find just the right words, that can and usually does get to be labor. ~ Fred Saberhagen
Testing Ideas quotes by Fred Saberhagen
Someday we shall look back on this dark era of agriculture and shake our heads. How could we have ever believed that it was a good idea to grow our food with poisons? ~ Jane Goodall
Testing Ideas quotes by Jane Goodall
To create you must quiet your mind. You need a quiet mind so that ideas will have a chance of connecting. ~ Eric Maisel
Testing Ideas quotes by Eric Maisel
For black America needs a politics whose first mission isn't the reinforcement of the idea of black America; and a discourse of race that isn't centrally concerned with preserving the idea of race and racial unanimity. We need something we don't yet have: a way of speaking about black poverty that doesn't falsify the reality of black advancement; a way of speaking about black advancement that doesn't distort the enduring realities of black poverty. ~ Henry Louis Gates
Testing Ideas quotes by Henry Louis Gates
Our thesis is that the idea of a self-adjusting market implied a stark utopia. Such an institution could not exist for any length of time without annihilating the human and natural substance of society; it would have physically destroyed man and transformed his surroundings into a wilderness. ~ Karl Polanyi
Testing Ideas quotes by Karl Polanyi
For us, not cooperating in the monopoly regimes of intellectual property rights and patents and biodiversity - saying "no" to patents on life, and developing intellectual ideas of resistance - is very much a continuation of Gandhian satyagraha. It is, for me, keeping life free in its diversity. ~ Vandana Shiva
Testing Ideas quotes by Vandana Shiva
Most of my stories are ideas in action. In other words, I get a concept, and I let it run away. I find a character to act out the idea. And then the story takes care of itself. ~ Ray Bradbury
Testing Ideas quotes by Ray Bradbury
I think you have to be ready to switch gears and go with the team as a director, as opposed to superimposing your own strict idea of the story. There are very few directors that can micromanage and still come out with something that's living and breathing on a page. Wes Anderson is one of those . ~ Susan Sarandon
Testing Ideas quotes by Susan Sarandon
Behind these practical studies lay powerful, intertwined, and potentially contradictory beliefs: that language provides a key to the rational, scientific understanding of the world and that language is more than human speech, that it claims a divine origin and is the means by which God created the cosmos and Adam named the beasts.

As we will see, both ideas strongly influenced the Inklings, whose leading members wrote many words about the meaning of words. For Owen Barfield, language is the fossil record of the history and evolution of human consciousness; for C. S. Lewis, it is a mundane tool that "exists to communicate whatever it can communicate" but also, as in That Hideous Strength, an essential part of our metaphysical makeup for good or ill; for Charles Williams, language is power, a field of force for the magician, a vehicle of prayer for the believing Christian; for Tolkien, language is a fallen human instrument and a precious divine gift ("O felix peccatum Babel!" he exclaimed in his essay "English and Welsh"), a supreme art, and, as "Word", a name for God. ~ Philip Zaleski
Testing Ideas quotes by Philip Zaleski
All false religions cut away parts of God's revelation, add ideas of their own, and come out with various viewpoints that differ from God's revelation in the Bible. ~ Billy Graham
Testing Ideas quotes by Billy Graham
The sciences are like a beautiful river, of which the course is easy to follow, when it has acquired a certain regularity; but if one wants to go back to the source, one will find it nowhere, because it is everywhere; it is spread so much [as to be] over all the surface of the earth; it is the same if one wants to go back to the origin of the sciences, one will find only obscurity, vague ideas, vicious circles; and one loses oneself in the primitive ideas. ~ Lazare Carnot
Testing Ideas quotes by Lazare Carnot
The trouble with academics and commentators is that they care more about whether ideas are interesting than whether they are true. ~ Isaiah Berlin
Testing Ideas quotes by Isaiah Berlin
As a kid you learn that there are thinkers and there are philosophers and there are theologian, and I'd hear little bits of the ideas that these people pursued or developed or created and I'd be really excited. Then I'll start to read it and I think, "Wait a minute, this is a rabbit hole. This isn't a gateway or a ticket to anything except itself." ~ Will Oldham
Testing Ideas quotes by Will Oldham
Left-wing ideas are predicated on Marx's materialist understanding. Whether or not an individual who espouses Left-wing ideas considers himself a Marxist - and few have since the fall of the Soviet Union - Left-wing ideas are predicated on Marx's materialist understanding of life. In popular jargon, 'materialism' means an excessive love of material things. But philosophically, 'materialism' means that only matter is real; there is no reality beyond the material world. ~ Dennis Prager
Testing Ideas quotes by Dennis Prager
It is a difficult thing to like anybody else's ideas of being funny. ~ Gertrude Stein
Testing Ideas quotes by Gertrude Stein
Hope for the future lies in each of us looking within. By learning to feed your hunger, you can overcome the tempting illusions all around you. By discovering who you are, you can stop basing your self-image solely on other people's ideas about you. By connecting to your inner strength, you can stop cycling between idealistic illusions and self-hating disillusionment. By taking responsibility for yourself, you can stop relying on others to take responsibility for you. ~ Vironika Tugaleva
Testing Ideas quotes by Vironika Tugaleva
I feel totally female. I didn't compete with men and I don't want to look like a man! I love being a lady and dressing up and masquerading and wearing all the fineries. I'm breaking down the idea that the artist has to look poor, with berets. ~ Louise Berliawsky Nevelson
Testing Ideas quotes by Louise Berliawsky Nevelson

The materials shape your idea. ~ Erik Spiekermann
Testing Ideas quotes by Erik Spiekermann
Since the 1970s, Japanese quality has become a byword, and many a book and article has been penned on the subject of Kaizen, 'improvement,' a form of corporate culture in which employers encourage their workers to submit ideas that will polish and improve efficiency. The writers on Kaizen, however, overlooked one weakness in this approach, which seemed minor at the time but has seriously impacted Japan's technology. Kaizen's emphasis is entirely on positive recommendations; there is no mechanism to deal with negative criticism, no way to disclose faults or mistakes - and this leads to a fundamental problem of information. People keep silent about embarrassing errors, with the result that problems are never solved. ~ Alex Kerr
Testing Ideas quotes by Alex Kerr
In economics, one of the most important concepts is 'opportunity cost' - the idea that once you spend your money on something, you can't spend it again on something else. ~ Malcolm Turnbull
Testing Ideas quotes by Malcolm Turnbull
To let the child do as he likes when he has not yet developed any powers of control is to betray the idea of freedom. ~ Maria Montessori
