I'm not doing anything wrong, I'm not obstructing anyone's access. When I have a crowd I make sure that the crowd makes room for people. I'm an artist who cares about the cultural fabric of New York City. I care about New York as a harbor for street culture - and I care about street culture as a base-level populist diffusion of ideas. And I believe in making those ideas accessible to everyone. ~ Kalan Sherrard
Street Culture quotes by Kalan Sherrard
I'm here to tell niggas it ain't all swell.
There's Heaven then there's Hell niggas
One day your cruisin' in your seven,
Next day your sweatin', forgettin' your lies,
Alibis ain't matchin' up, bullshit catchin' up
Hit with the RICO, they repoed your vehicle
Everything was all good just a week ago
'Bout to start bitchin' ain't you?
Ready to start snitchin' ain't you?
I forgive you. Weak ass, hustlin' just ain't you
Aside from the fast cars
Honeys that shake they ass in bars
You know you wouldn't be involved
With the Underworld dealers, carriers of mac-millers
East coast bodiers, West coast cap-peelers
Little monkey niggas turned gorillas. ~ Jay-Z
Street Culture quotes by Jay-Z
It is not surprising that young white males – most between thirty and forty – play major roles in the production of hip-pop. It's easy to forget this because when most people critique rap and hip-pop harshly, they assume that young black men are the sole creators and producers of misogynist rap. In fact, nothing is unilaterally produced anymore. As we've discussed, once you have a corporate takeover of the street culture, it is no longer the property of the young, Black and Latino men and women who have created it. It is reinvented with the mass consumer audience in mind. The hard-core misogyny and the hard-core sexism isn't a translation from street to big-time studio, it is a product of the big-time studio. ~ Bell Hooks
Street Culture quotes by Bell Hooks
Street culture is punk, hip-hop, skateboarding, surfing, graffiti. It's like a massive global culture that is all tied together. But for so many years it was very geographic. ~ Jeffrey Deitch
Street Culture quotes by Jeffrey Deitch
Concurrently, the growing class power and public voice of conservative and liberal well-to-do black folks easily obscures the class cruelty these individuals enact both in the way they talk about underprivileged blacks and the way they represent them. The existence of that class cruelty and its fascist dimensions have been somewhat highlighted by the efforts of privileged-class blacks to censor the voices of black youth, particularly gangsta rappers who are opposing bourgeois class values by extolling the values of street culture and street vernacular. Significantly, the attack on urban underclass black youth culture and its gangster dimensions (glamorization of crime, etc.) is usually presented via a critique of sexism. Since most privileged-class blacks have shown no interest in advancing feminist politics, the only organized effort to end sexism and sexist oppression, this attack on sexism seems merely gratuitous, a smoke screen that deflects away from the fact that what really disturbs bourgeois folks is the support of rebellion, unruly behavior, and disrespect for their class values. In reality, they and their white counterparts fear the power these young folks have to change the minds and life choices of youth from privileged classes. If only underclass black folks were listening to gangsta rap, there would be no public effort to silence and censor this music. The fear is that it will generate class rebellion. ~ Bell Hooks
Street Culture quotes by Bell Hooks
Street culture is a culture of containment. Most young people do not realize that it all too often leads to a "dead end". "Street culture," as I am using the term, is a counterforce to movement culture. Street culture in contemporary urban reality is synonymous with survival at all costs. This world view is mostly negative, because it demands constant adjustment to circumstances that are often far beyond young people's control or understanding, such as economics, education, housing, employment, nutrition, law, and so forth. ~ Haki R. Madhubuti
Street Culture quotes by Haki R. Madhubuti
Back then, when the culture was still building, people were loyal to stores, brands, and the cause. The style was retro-nineties, loud colors, vector or photographic driven, skinny jeans, selvage denim, lots of Japanese brands, and hip-hop/street culture content. There was also a political aspect to streetwear. Speaking for myself, I was sick of rocking logos for people. What people started printing their own shirts on AAA or American Apparel blanks, we got to rep the culture through the clothing. In the post-9/11 era, a lot of the more powerful messages about individuality, free speech, and what it was to be American manifested themselves in streetwear. (215) ~ Eddie Huang
Street Culture quotes by Eddie Huang
People are used to music that justifies street culture but something that's not touched on is why these kids act the way they act, live the way they live. ~ Kendrick Lamar
Street Culture quotes by Kendrick Lamar
It is the strain of walking around the world-down the street, riding city buses and elevators, moving from place to place to place-and not knowing who might want to destroy you, who might like to fill your heart with poison, who might rob you and stab you, who might stand above you in the dark with a tarantula. ~ Joe Meno
Street Culture quotes by Joe Meno
The artist has to be a guardian of the culture. ~ Robert Longo
Street Culture quotes by Robert Longo
Happiness is not like we were walking around fingering razor blades or anything like that. But it just sort of seems as if - we sort of knew how happy our parents were, and we would compare our lives with our parents and see that, at least on the surface or according to the criteria that the culture lays down for a successful, happy life, we were actually doing better than a lot of them were. ~ David Foster Wallace
Street Culture quotes by David Foster Wallace
Communication is the essential medium of a creative culture: the communal sea in which we all swim. A company that can't communicate is like a jazz band without instruments: Music just isn't going to happen. ~ John Kao
Street Culture quotes by John Kao
Our culture is what we did together. What did Walt Whitman represent for all of us? What was his message to us? That is an inheritance, and when we squander that inheritance we act outside. We don't know who we are; we don't know where we are. ~ Wynton Marsalis
Street Culture quotes by Wynton Marsalis
What did you do for them, Bone? Teach them to read and write? Help them rebuild, give the, Christ, help restore a culture? Did you remember to warn the, that it could never be Eden? ~ Walter M. Miller Jr.
Street Culture quotes by Walter M. Miller Jr.
Every child needs nature. Not just the ones with parents who appreciate nature. Not only those of a certain economic class or culture or set of abilities. Every child. ~ Richard Louv
Street Culture quotes by Richard Louv
Being able to think and invest very long term and not worry about current earnings or Wall Street analysts can be a major competitive advantage in certain businesses. Acquire ~ Daniel Pecaut
Street Culture quotes by Daniel Pecaut
From American Idol to The Matrix participatory media - where old and new media converge by involving fans - is influencing our culture by creating new forms of interactive storytelling. Yet by enabling people to participate in such various media they can converge as a crowd to alter the story to create new modes of engagement, some not necessarily endorsed by the creator - or the brands that back them. ~ Henry Jenkins
Street Culture quotes by Henry Jenkins
Is this your holiday homework?" asked Sarah. "Don't do it, Rose! And Eve will write you a note to say it's iniquitous to give eight-year-olds homework. You will, won't you, Eve?"
"I could never spell 'iniquitous,' Sarah darling!"
"Hot concrete," said Rose mournfully, prodding her porridge.
"Write this," ordered Saffron. "'The ancient Egyptians are all dead. Their days are very quiet.' Porridge is meant to look like hot concrete. Eat it up ... Read the next question!" ...
"What would you say if you bumped into Tutankhamen in the street?"
"'Sorry!'" said Sarah at once. "Put that."
"We have to answer in proper sentences."
"'Sorry, but it was your fault! You were walking sideways! ~ Hilary McKay
Street Culture quotes by Hilary McKay
I think that's what makes many Swedes jealous of immigrant groups. You have a culture, an identity, a history, something that brings you together. And what do we have? We have Midsummer's Eve and such silly things. ~ Mona Sahlin
Street Culture quotes by Mona Sahlin
A fine thing to be talking about angels in this day when common thieves smash the holy rosaries of their victims in the street ... ~ Jack Kerouac
Street Culture quotes by Jack Kerouac
Do you see this lantern? cried Syme in a terrible voice.'Do you see the cross carved on it, and the flame inside? You did not make it. You did not light it. Better men than you, men who could believe and obey, twisted the entrails of iron and preserved the legend of fire. There is not a street you walk on, there is not a thread you wear, that was not made as this lantern was, by denying your philosophy of dirt and rats. You can make nothing. You can only destroy. You will destroy mankind, you will destroy the world. Let that suffice you. Yet this one old Christian lantern you shall not destroy. It shall go where your empire of apes will never have the wit to find it. ~ G.K. Chesterton
Street Culture quotes by G.K. Chesterton
One side of me is very busy paying attention to the details of life, the humanity of people, catching the street voices, the middle-class, upper-middle-class secret lives of Turks. The other side is interested in history and class and gender, trying to get all of society in a very realistic way. ~ Orhan Pamuk
Street Culture quotes by Orhan Pamuk
Their imaginations were fed by exile, a nourishment drawn not through roots but through rootlessness. My imagination, however, requires that I stay in the same city, on the same street, in the same house, gazing at the same view. Istanbul's fate is my fate. I am attached to this city because it has made me who I am. Gustave ~ Orhan Pamuk
Street Culture quotes by Orhan Pamuk
It seems to me that America is constantly reinventing what "America" means. ~ Ronald Reagan
Street Culture quotes by Ronald Reagan
When you have an idea for a story, you want those characters to reach as many people as you can. I think you normally think of prose as a way of doing that. It fits our time, the culture. ~ Robert Morgan
Street Culture quotes by Robert Morgan
I can't think of a single one of my plays that does not represent a coincidence between an external and an internal event. Something outside of me, outside even my own life, something I read in a newspaper or witness on the street, something I see or hear, fascinates me. I see it for its dramatic potential. ~ Athol Fugard
Street Culture quotes by Athol Fugard
It is not easy to find the right way. You must learn to govern yourself, you must learn autonomy, you must manage your freedom or drown in it. You may strain the will after Experience because you need it for your books. Or you may perish under the heavy weight of Culture. You may make a fool of yourself anywhere. You may find illumination anywhere - in the gutter, in the college, in the corporation, in a submarine, in the library. No one man holds a patent on it. No man knows what it is likely to tell him to do. ~ Saul Bellow
Street Culture quotes by Saul Bellow
It hurts to be around life. People don't understand how close death is, right over their shoulders, around the block, at the end of a street. It's everywhere. ~ Jessica Sorensen
Street Culture quotes by Jessica Sorensen
Refusal to stand up for what you believe in weakens individual morality and ethics as well as those of the culture. ~ Bell Hooks
Street Culture quotes by Bell Hooks
In Downing Street they called me 'Boss'. Civil servants would always call me 'Prime Minister'. ~ Tony Blair
Street Culture quotes by Tony Blair
Good teams incorporate teamwork into their culture, creating the building blocks for success. ~ Ted Sundquist
Street Culture quotes by Ted Sundquist
I'm very headstrong. Once I've caught fire, there's no dousing the flames - all engines full speed ahead. ~ Adachi Zenko
Street Culture quotes by Adachi Zenko
We have developed a culture of self-interest, self-gratification, self-aggrandizement, and utter selfishness. We have institutionalized and disseminated these values as never before in human history. ~ Michael C. Hill
Street Culture quotes by Michael C. Hill
In borrowing from a food culture, pay attention to how a culture eats as well as to what it eats. ~ Michael Pollan
Street Culture quotes by Michael Pollan
I've always been very, very supportive of fan cultures. I'm a fan of all kinds of things. ~ David Slade
Street Culture quotes by David Slade
No tourists, no screaming drag queens, no horse hooves clacking down the street. The perfect still of the night - this was something I would never get used to. Not in New Orleans. The quietness freaked me out. ~ Alys Arden
Street Culture quotes by Alys Arden
What a joy this book is! I love recipe books, but it's short-lived; I enjoy the pictures for several minutes, read a few pages, and then my eyes glaze over. They are basically books to be used in the kitchen for one recipe at a time.
This book, however, is in a different class altogether and designed to be read in its entirety. It's in its own sui generis category; it has recipes at the end of most of the twenty-one chapters, but it's a book to be read from cover to cover, yet it could easily be read chapter by chapter, in any order, as they are all self-contained. Every bite-sized chapter is a flowing narrative from a well-stocked brain encompassing Balinese culture, geography and history, while not losing its main focus: food.
As you would expect from a scholar with a PhD in history from Columbia University, the subject matter has been meticulously researched, not from books and articles and other people's work, but from actually being on the ground and in the markets and in the kitchens of Balinese families, where the Balinese themselves learn their culinary skills, hands on, passed down orally, manually and practically from generation to generation.
Vivienne Kruger has lived in Bali long enough to get it right. That's no mean feat, as the subject has not been fully studied before.
Yes, there are so-called Balinese recipe books, most, if I'm not mistaken, written by foreigners, and heavily adapted. The dishes have not, until now, been systematically pla ~ Vivienne Kruger
Street Culture quotes by Vivienne Kruger
We have been conditioned, taught, and coerced by the agents of our culture (parents, grandparents, advertisers, food critic, etc.) to eat the flesh and drink the milk of other animals. Because of this conditioning, which has occurred over a long period of time (thousands of years), we have developed addictive eating habits and blinded ourselves to the facts of our biological system and its true needs. ~ Sharon Gannon
Street Culture quotes by Sharon Gannon
Ours is a culture and a time immensely rich in trash as it is in treasures. ~ Ray Bradbury
Street Culture quotes by Ray Bradbury
It allows you to be yourself, good and bad. And it's a two-way street: you give and take equally. ~ Connor Franta
Street Culture quotes by Connor Franta
A vigorous culture capable of making corrective, stabilizing changes depends heavily on its educated people, and especially upon their critical capacities and depth of understanding. ~ Jane Jacobs
Street Culture quotes by Jane Jacobs
These rules, the sign language and grammar of the Game, constitute a kind of highly developed secret language drawing upon several sciences and arts, but especially mathematics and music (and/or musicology), and capable of expressing and establishing interrelationships between the content and conclusions of nearly all scholarly disciplines. The Glass Bead Game is thus a mode of playing with the total contents and values of our culture; it plays with them as, say, in the great age of the arts a painter might have played with the colours on his palette. ~ Hermann Hesse
Street Culture quotes by Hermann Hesse
The television culture celebrates incompetence. ~ Bill McKibben
Street Culture quotes by Bill McKibben
All aesthetic judgment is really cultural evaluation. ~ Susan Sontag
Street Culture quotes by Susan Sontag
Other than the 'Sesame Street' soundtrack, which I was obsessed with, the first artist I really felt I'd discovered on my own was Amy Winehouse. She was the first female artist I wanted to write like and sing like and be like. ~ Alessia Cara
